Having lost my dad just this week, I really appreciate you having your dad help with these projects and him in these videos.
I'm sorry to hear that Ryan
I still haven’t figured out where you are going to mount the didgeridoo!
Maybe on the hood?!👌
And don’t forget the boomerang rack!🦘😁
Very good system I built something very similar. I would run water out of the tank through the pump and filter then back into the tank to give all the water a good clean if it was getting stagnant.
Two items I've installed to my version of this setup (inspired by your africa jeep)... First is a flow rate adjuster. I keep it fairly low for cooking/ water bottle fill up but I can adjust it so the pump is full blast. Helpful with the sprayer if the dogs are dirty. Second is on the output side I have another tee fitting. One side goes to a fixed sink on the end of the JKs tailgate and the other end goes to a sprayer. Best of both worlds!
Great work. One small suggestion would be to put a switch protector over the on/off switch to protect from accidental bumps as you are driving over rough terrain and your load shifts.
Very simple, easy to work on, parts very available. A bit of dielectric grease on the switch terminals would be an extra bit of safety.
I love your "chuck it in and find out what works" attitude. I've been building a 99 Jeep Cherokee and it has been a lot of that. I am not a fabricator either so I understand scratching your head staring at it and playing 50 different ideas out in your head and getting overwhelmed. Super happy i found your channel and super excited to see Australia with you!
Right on!
To save your system filter cartridge, if the water source is noticeably less than pristine, it could be pre-filtered using some dense cloth when it is poured into the bucket the water will be suctioned from. Then these pre-filtering cloths could be hand washed, dried, and reused for the same purpose when needed. It would probably make the store bought ($$) system cartridges last longer.
Just a tip use food grade hose to fill the tank from any tap. The RV stores sell them in long lengths. You might have already discovered that Clarke Rubber also sell a range of food grade hoses.
Is that really necessary since you're running the water through a filter prior to drinking?
Looks great! When filling from a pressurized hose, you could just leave both "input" valves open, and the pressurized water would just push into the tank, bypassing the pump.
Might consider some type of filter for the vent to keep dust and bugs out of. I’m setting up a system inspired by you for my camp / bug out trailer!
Nice video, thank you. I like the way the water is filtered twice.
THAT was very impressive to watch. Well done Dan.
I LOVE the idea of filtering the water twice. It's a simple and brilliant design! Thanks for sharing!
Yes, most new carbon filters will make the water black. Best thing to do is to run a gallon through that you can use for something else. Those pumps are super durable. It looks like you selected some great parts.
Pretty awesome, one thing about covering up the tank is it's harder to see how much water you have in the tank.
I cut a slit into the plywood for that very reason, and the courtesy light in the bed of the gladiator shines right through the tank so I can perfectly see how full it is!
Go to 26:50 and you will see the slot cut in the wood.
I’d be cautious about hard-fixing the tank with the built-in bolts, given the stresses that corrugations / off-road bumps could cause. Strapping the tank in, and a good piece of sturdy foam underneath might protect the tank better.
Nice setup. I like the filter in, filter out approach using a single pump & filter like your old setup. Very elegant.
Great setup. I like how water is filtered before filling the tank and also again before drinking.
Dan - Really like the setup and seeing the evolution of your plumbing engineering - If I could make a suggestion: In your previous water setup for Africa, you showed everything laid out with the components with a white background (and looked like it was done in MS Paint!) but it was SUPER useful to understand the componentry, valves, flow direction without trying to stop the video to understand - Maybe an addendum to this video? 🤔 - Thanks for great content from a fan literally 1/2 way around the globe in New England U.S.
Thanks Dan! I did that last time because I couldn't get the camera in there and it was all kind of a mess. I was hoping this time it wasn't needed because everything is laid out right there so simple and easy to see.
Let me know if you have a specific question!
Great system Dan. Love that you filter your water twice, and can succion it from a pail or say… a river ! PS. You got food grade everywhere except…. The garden nozzle 😂. No biggie, we all drank from a hose when we were kids right 👍🏻. Cheers from 🇨🇦
Awsome setup Dan! Love the visual slot for the water level in the plywood, very nice touch.
After thinking about it some more, I like the valve setup for versatility, because you can bypass the tank and single-pass through the filter for something like washing the truck from a river or billabong!
The impedance of fresh water across a 12v system is so high that it's highly unlikely that it will cause a short circuit. There should be no issues with what you have done. Great job.
You just help me finish the last of my kitchen mate, free cold drinking water :)
thanks for the info. I will getting alot of good ideas for my water system
That’s a beautiful system.
Nice set up Dan. I really like the 1 pump 1 filter aspects of it. It's really starting to come together.
I've been waiting on this one for a while, thanks for the great tutorial Dan!
You're back!
Ok, I kinda mess with you a bit on difference of opinion, and being a builder I just have to naturally have that difference with an engineer.
But that's a pretty nice water system! Nicely built.... for an engineer. Hahaha.
Cool setup Dan! I’m going to try a gravity fed water system and if that doesn’t work well enough, I may be copying you!
Having to set the valves properly reminds me of the inside of a WWII submarine with all those valves inside. Anyhow, it's proven, and I couldn't have done any better :D
Excellent set up. I had saved video of your Africa setup for my camper build but this looks better. I am now converting my Mitsubishi shogun into overland vehicle and will be using same setup. Thanks.
Awesome Dan!
Very nice. I like it. Safe travels.
Great progress so far!
Definitely informative. Thanks for sharing Dan. 👍 If you don’t mind I say so, maybe doing a short length suction to hang just below your switch box may remove chances of water wetting the tank surrounds. This short length pipe with a clip adapter can be a more permanent setup and can be connected ( plug or unplug ) to your normal flexible suction pipe. Just my two cents worth. Haha!
You still have 4 valves in the setup, they are just paired on manifolds. 3 way ball valves are available (probably even in Australia) and would be a better choice in my opinion.
I looked really hard, and couldn't find them here
@@TheRoadChoseMe Fair enough. Nice system by the way. I do like the fact that your valve setup allows pumping and filtering in such a flexible way.
A quick search for 3 way valve Australia yields some options but I doubt it is worth changing since your system is clearly functional.
I didn't find anything that was going to be relatively easy to connect up to everything else - I made a few different frankenstein setups before eliminating connectors and adaptors to make it simpler, smaller and lighter
I love it, great job at thinking it through
If you cant find it in at the corner hardware store in Australia. you have to go to industry specific stores. Ie irrigation suppliers…There is no problem we haven’t encounter before. When we did anything with water on our last camper we went to a plastic injection moulder for the tank, we chose one of there pre designed template that would fit the space the best, went to an RV place for the pump as they had it in stock and available on the spot. And any piping and filters we went to an irrigation specialist in town. Almost any large community centre out in the bush have an irrigation shops. People just thinks it for crops only. as far as I know they all do food grade too, they have every thread under the sun any pipe and connectors in what ever materiel you want and huge selection of filters. Down side it’s more expensive, but it looks the part and lasts.
well done!
Wow! That turned out fantastic looking and VERY practical! Great job!
Awesome video. Thank you. How will you deal with giardia when getting water from streams? I wonder if those garden hose fittings are the same as in North America. My guess is it's the same.
TRCM Classic
You might want to put hinges on the lid over the pump, think how easy accessing the pump and hoses would be.
That tank cover is so bespoke. LoL
Hopefully no patina shows up anytime soon :)
I would seal the plywood on all sides
Hi Dan, just 2 questions:
- where is the UV light filter?
- How do you plan to heat the water? Or you don't plan with it in Australia? - would be good to see a video about water heat exchanger operation in your vehicle...
This time around I decided not to add a UV light. It was needed in Africa, but I don't think it's needed in Australia.
I don't heat the water - the weather here is plenty warm enough to just shower from a black bag hanging in the sun! (same in Africa)
🙋🏻♂️ Genial. Cómo haces para limpiar los tanques de agua? Gracias por este vídeo 💛👍🏻🇪🇦
The only thing I would add is a drain plug without going buy the pump to empty it but great work this look like nine
Awesome video I’m new to the channel and love your informative video about your travels keep it up and just a f.y.I everflo makes a pump bleach pump that is made of food grade plastic that as a built in power switch and a dead end switch it’s a 5gpm which is about 20 to 22 liters per minute I believe just letting you know for that extra peace of mind
I have the same tank but just used airline and push on airline fittings.
Oh wow, that sounds really cool. Do you pressurize it with an air pump, or still a water pump like mine?
The tank is on the passenger side (to even out the weight like you do) and I run a Seaflow pump under my tub then back up into a setup I have with a tap, an air outlet and some electrical outlets in a carpeted marine ply box.
Great video Dan! Greetings from Abu Dhabi...Was wondering if the blue tubing and the shower head demonstrated are also food grade or safe? Also, the plastic snap on fittings?
You actually have to be very careful with brass. Unless it says lead free it likely has led in it. Adding a bit of lead to the mix makes the brass much easier to cast and machine and thus cheaper
Gday Dan , great setup , I have exactly the same tank and thought I would just let you know I had a leak from the large black fill cap when the tank was full and driving over bumps. Might be something you want to check before fully enclosing . Cheers mate
Thanks Ben, good to know!
I would have made one of the fittings in the bottom of the tank, so i could have a gravity fed valve if the pump is not working.
Are those bottom 90 bend in Plastic? They are the only thing to stop the tank from draining if they break.
I would have one gravity fed brass valve on one of them, and plug the other one.
Drill new holes from the top, and use stiff pipe to the bottom.
What are your thoughts on the irrigation fittings sold by Bunnings to be used as food safe. ie the 90 degree elbows and the plastic valves?
Hi DAN...!!
I Really Do Love your Video's, it's AWESOME man...!!
DAN, if possible, which Company is busy making a Bigger Version of this Water Tank for the GLADIATOR in the US, Please Advise, I would Really Appreciate your Advise DAN...!?
Have a 'GODSPEED' Day, Dan...!!
"GOD IS GOOD ALL THE TIME"
Kind& Thankful regards,
JO
If that 2 to 1 valve is he same one I bought from Bunnings, it is junk like nearly every product from Bunnings. The barrel union breaks. You can get better quality products from a plumbing supplier like Reece or even a rural co op like CRT or what ever you have down there in Mexico.
you need a vent relief hose..i didnt see it...ps - you made almost the same changes i made to your original system...except i have a much bigger 2nd pump...to pump water from a fairly long distance source...plus 2 is one and one is none...and i have a bigger tank as well...thank you..
Brass fittings often have lead in them, at least in the US, not sure about Australia.
Less than 0.25%… take a chill pill
Why not a vertical slit in the plywood to see the water level ?
He did that
You can see the slit at 26:53
@@brycedunlap Thank you, I missed this.
Hey dan really nice système ;) did you plan to meet up with Ronny for an episode of modified when the gladiator will be all kitted out ? Cheers from France
If Ronny wants to, that would be great!
Quick question, what stops the dirty inlet water in the values and pumps that’s residual from filling making it to the water tap?
Always concerns me having all my drinking water in one tank. If it leaks you could loose the lot. I have travelled extensively in Sahara and carry my water in jerrycans, strong, simple, unlikely to leak but if I do get a leak I only loose 20l. I particularly don,t like your tank inlet/ outlet at the bottom of the tank. Why would you want to create a potential leak in the bottom of your tank? Other than this you have some great ideas and useful info.
I discovered your videos just last week, and find them most informative. Why did you opt for a bed tank on your Gladiator, instead of the undercarriage tank you had on the Wrangler?
I put an aux fuel tank underneath on the gladiator, so there was no other place for a water tank
Couple questions. Where did you find those great valves? I have looked all over and no luck. Also what is the inline water filter you are using? Thanks for the informative video. It's motivating me to get working on my rig!
I got both of them at the Australian Hardware store "Bunnings" (Australia only).
Keep searching, and you'll come up with something!
Great video, I know that you have ran a similar setup in your previous jeep. Have you ever been worried about the cleanliness of pump since it is technically exposed before any type of filtration? I know the know answer is that another filter and pump is probably not worth it.
It's never been a problem for me, but I also have never pumped in really nasty water. Usually what I'm filling up with is already clear and smells fine.
Hey Dan, enjoying your videos. I have a JK and am going to put in a water system...question...can you use brass garden connectors to click onto the filter both sides, or will they leak under pressure of the pump? What have you used there and is it all holding up ok?
My filters have had 1/2 inch barb fittings on each end, so I just put hose on that with a clamp. Never a leak
Who is the company in Australia that makes the tanks , please?
Do you have the link for your filter
wonder if you hinged a top somehow you could see what you are doing as opposed to feel what you are doing.....
Does the water tank need a Valve. So when u fill it up at max capacity and close the lid the movement of the water doesn't make it fail like break or soemthing?
What ever happened to that all-in-one combo filter with UV?
Hi Dan. I see you used some transparent hose as well. Did you have any problem with bacteria growth inside the hose due to exposure to light? Would you recommend the blue hose? Any problems in the tank? How did you clean or disinfect your system and how often?Cheers mate, you’re an icon.
No problems at all. The water in Australia is very good, so I wasn't worried about it.
My system filters the water on the way into and out of the tank, so nasties can't even get in there.
What about Africa? I know you had a better filter there but did you have any problems with bacteria growing inside your water system?
My system for Africa also filtered it on the way in and out of the tank. It was a 0.5 micron filter and included a UV lamp to kill anything that was alive.
So I never had a problem, as nothing could get into the tank.
i have an observation? Does it hav a gauge so you know how empty the tanks Getting? Maybe cutting a narrow slot in the side of that plywood so you can quickly see the level? just a thought, otherwise great work Dan.
I did exactly that!
If you open both taps on the fill side, and close both on the use side, you won't need to run your pump to fill tank from a domestic hose.
Right, but I want to filter it to get out the chlorine which is really strong here in Australia!
@@TheRoadChoseMe true, but I'm only talking about filling the tank. When you use the water, it will flow from tank, pump, filter and out your squirty gun. It still gets filtered on the way out.
So I re watched @22:00 and see you're double filtering. Ok, fair enough. What about a bypass valve so it still filters, but don't have to run the pump? Just thinking for time, ease, wear and tear and battery life.
I used my other setup for 3 years and 54,000 miles around Africa through 35 countries. It still runs flawlessly now. This system will last, and I'm not worried about wear and tear. As for the battery it runs off the solar, and time is what I have plenty of!
Where'd you get that valve body / multi-tap?
Hardware store chain in Australia - Bunnings.
curious... if your going to have more yhan one person in vehicle @ 1gal per person per day... why did you chose a small 11gal tank? my estimates give you only 3-5days tankage of moderate use.
second on that concept... I plan on 30days out for one person and I have a salvage 40gal rv tank on hand would that be excessive in a desert or high serria climate?
Will you carry an extra pump? Also will your fill hose have a female fitting on it?
What's the reason that you went with a simple RV filter instead of the Pura UV1 this time? Is it because of shipping logistics? Did you think the UV system was redundant?
I don't think it's nesescarry for Australia - the water here is just better than in Africa.
If I were going elsewhere in the world, I would absolutely without a doubt use the UV1 again - it's brilliant.
@@TheRoadChoseMe but if you're filling the tank passing through the filter, wouldn't the dechlorinated water in your tank promote microbial growth?
#waterextravagance
The build links and camera gear links don’t work
How did all your building effect the warranty?
It doesn't, because I have not modified the driveline or engine.
What water pump did you use? 3GPM?
Yep
How can you check how much water you have left?
I cut a slot in the plywood cover so I can see the tank - it works really well when the courtesy light in the bed of the gladiator shines right through it!
When first used the water will have carbon in the water for a few seconds.
What kind of tank is that? The link doesn't work anymore.
I bought it in Australia here dunnandwatson.com.au/shop/4wd-ute-tub-storage-fitouts/4x4-accessories-ute/wheel-arch-water-tank/
Your filter it not un light ??
ah see what you did there.....
