Morgan was born in Dublin, the son of Hilda "Holly" (née Stokes) and artist and sculptor Donnchadh Morgan. His father died young of an aneurysm, leaving Holly with four children: Dermot, Paul, Denise, and Ruth, the last of whom died in childhood.Morgan was educated at Oatlands College in Stillorgan and University College Dublin (UCD), where he studied EnMorgan made his debut in the media on the Morning Ireland radio show produced by Gene Martin, whose sister Ella was the mother of one of Morgan's friends. It was through this contact that Morgan made the break into radio and eventually television.
Morgan came to prominence as part of the team behind the highly successful RTÉ television show The Live Mike, presented by Mike Murphy. Between 1979 and 1982 Morgan played a range of comic characters who appeared between segments of the show. Morgan lampooned the rampant Modernism within the Post-Vatican II Roman Catholic Church in Ireland by creating Father Trendy, a wishy-washy, trying-to-be-cool hippie-priest (modelled after Father Brian D'Arcy). Father Trendy always wore an Elvis-style haircut and, sometimes, a leather jacket. He was also given to drawing ludicrous parallels between religious life and secular hobbies in two-minute 'sermons' to the camera. Morgan's other characters included a bigoted GAA member who waved his hurley around while verbally attacking his pet hates.
Morgan also lampooned both the Wolfe Tones and the clichés of Irish rebel songs, which he said: "always have lots of blood and guts and thunder in them". He then sang a rebel song of his own, a parody of Thomas Osborne Davis' song "A Nation Once Again", about the martyrdom of Fido, a dog who saves his IRA master by eating a hand grenade during a search of the house by the Black and Tans during the Irish War of Independence. When the dog farts and the grenade detonates, the British commented: "It must have been something he ate." The song climaxed with the words: "I hope that I shall live to see Fido an Alsatian once again
Already a celebrity in Ireland, Morgan got his big break in Britain with Channel 4's Irish sitcom Father Ted, which ran for three series from 1995 to 1998. Writers Graham Linehan and Arthur Mathews auditioned many actors for the title role, but Morgan's enthusiasm won him the part. Father Ted focuses on the misadventures of three morally dubious Irish Catholic priests, whose transgressions have caused them to be exiled to the fictional Craggy Island, off the coast of County Galway
In 1996, Father Ted won a BAFTA award for Best Comedy. The same year Morgan also won a British Comedy Award for Top TV Comedy Actor, and McLynn was awarded Top TV Comedy Actress. In 1999, Father Ted won a second BAFTA for Best Comedy, with Morgan being awarded Best Comedy Performance posthumously.
Morgan said in an interview with Gay Byrne on The Late Late Show in 1996 that he was writing a screenplay entitled Miracle of the Magyars, based on a real-life incident in the 1950s when the Archbishop of Dublin forbade Catholics from attending a football match between the Republic of Ireland and Yugoslavia on religious and spiritual grounds. Yugoslavia won the match 4-1. Morgan planned to use Hungary as the opposing side to the Republic of Ireland - hence the title. At the time of his death in 1998, he had completed the screenplay but the film was never made.
Morgan's first project after Father Ted was to be Re-united, a sitcom about two retired footballers sharing a flat in London. According to former manager John Fischer, Morgan was scripting the programme and planned to take the part of "an Eamon Dunphy-type who had gone on to work in journalism, but had ended up living with an old football pal". Mel Smith was in talks for the role of the friend.
Morgan had been commissioned to write a drama series for the BBC.

I'm genuinely surpised at how modest Dermot's grave is but then he's in with his family so what more could anyone want for?
Thank you for sharing.
Ahh Rob, I thought so too but yes he's with his mammy, daddy and sister, Rest in Peace to them all
I'm so glad you took us there, Sue! You're correct it is indeed a humble grave but I suppose he will be equally remembered with or without a massive tomb. Such a fun man.
He was amazing and I don't think there will be another like him or come close to him again 😘❤️
Father Ted's was an hillarious programme. His death caused so many to struggle at the pain of his demise. He was a genius
I completely agree, such talent ❤️
Hi Sue, always enjoy your vids 😊❤🇨🇦
Thanks so much x x
He died a couple months before I was born. And I recently watched a few episodes of father Ted and got hooked to it. Wondering what else Dermot Morgan did, I checked his wiki and I was very surprised he died so young. To imagine what he could’ve contributed in the past few decades…
But I’d like to think that people like him never truly die, he is still talked about and his work enjoyed by so many even today. That’s the best legacy an artist could ask for
I loved that series, he was hilarious! I didn't realizes he passed. RIP Dermot 🙏.
Yes sadly, way too young, although I thought he was much older, must have been that huge head of grey hair he had 💔❤️
Aww Sue he was a fantastic actor comic ahead of his time RIP Dermot Morgan May you bring laughter up in heaven god bless 🙏🏼✝️💜☘️🇨🇮fantastic video Sue thank you ❤️
Thanks Marie, he was amazing, so clever and whitby, the whole group in Fr.Ted were fantastic 👏 😀

Great TV series..gone way way too.soon..thank you for filming this Sue
On of the best, Dermot was an amazing actor and comedian.
Bless him. What a legacy he left. Father Ted is thirty years old next year and still revered now. I'm hoping to go to Ireland next year so will visit his grave now and leave some flowers.
He was one of the greatest ❤️

❤️❤️❤️
He sounds like a great guy, very funny. I'm going to look him up. Thanks Sue
Oh do Toms, this was genius comedy how he got away with it i don't know because some of the jokes were really a bad look for Catholic priests, I mean he had drunk priests, missing money, a priest who cursed and looked at women, it was just hilarious 😂
@@SerenitySueGraveyards Down with that sort of thing Sue😁😁
Careful now!!
Loved Father Ted❤️ Dermott and his cast were brilliant!! I’m glad I have the entire series on DVD😂😂 Thanks Sue for visiting his grave for us❤️
Do you Susan, wow how great that you have them, I often think back now and wonder how they got away with the stuff they put into it, hilarious 😂
Thankyou for that Sue….such a sad and great loss to us all….he was a natural comedian but I loved him as Father Ted with the crazy characters he shared the house with…they all gave their all into making a great show and I’m pretty sure they really enjoyed themselves.
I had a shock seeing the character who played the alcoholic father without any makeup! Goodness me! He was made up well for the part.
It’s also sad to realise your own mortality..,seeing Dermot was born the same year as myself, makes you appreciate life even more and must never take anything for granted, as every day is a gift, God Bless you Dermot and Thankyou for all the entertainment you gave us during your lifetime. And thank you Sue. Love and light Helen 🙋♀️ xxxxx
Thanks Helen, he was very unique in what he did, great entertainers, poor fr Jack has since passed too, such a shame 😢
Too too young 🧡 What a shock it had to be for his family and friends.
Thanks Cathy, so very young ❤️

In Canada we were fortunate to get programming from the U.K. and Ireland, and I remember Father Ted well. He had a short but well lived life, and gave us laughter when we needed it most. RIP Mr.Morgan. Thanks Sue.😇🙏
He was so gifted in life ❤️
I had watched quite a few of the Father Ted series, and remember having a great laugh. So sad he has left us but we will always remember the laughter. Thank you Sue, very tastefully done as alays. Bless you 💕🇦🇺
Thanks Liz, it was hilarious, I often wonder how they got away with it but glad they did, its all a but of fun but I'm sure many didn't like the fact it was aimed at the Catholic Church and priests ❤️
I loved that program and father Jack
Ahh me too x
Hi Sue thanks for taking us to Dermots final resting place Always loved Fr. Ted its classic comedy Just resting in the account 😆Guaranteed to cheer you up Favourite episode Kicking Bishop Brennan 🤣🤣
Ahhh yes, thanks for reminding me, kicking the Bishop 🤭😅 or the one where the priests went missing ended up in women's underwear lol or Mrs Doyle falling for the milk man, just amazing 👏 😀
RIP Dermot Morgan!!
I LOVED Father Ted!! XXXX
It was one of the saddest I've stood at, like dolores o'riordans, to stand at the foot of a grave of someone who's so talented who died too young really brings death right to you, no matter who we are, what we are worth our time comes and no one can save us..
@@SerenitySueGraveyards Amen to that, Sue!!XXXX ❤😥
❤️❤️❤️❤️
It's so unbelievable that someone, so full of life and comic genius, will not be seen again. RIP Dermot from everyone in Limerick.
I know John, he was the best
Great! As always!
Thank you 😊
Thank Sue , I seam to have seen him before. Rest In Peace .
Thanks Regina ❤️
Wow Sue! You found Dermot's grave. What a wonderful wee tribute. As usual you have done your homework. As you know Dermot ruffled a lot of stiff ecclesiastical feathers in his time and he we unafraid to ruffle other feathers too. I was shocked when he died. Like so many others he was taken too young. Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills.
I wonder would Fr. Ted get aired on out tvs now, I think it was a very controversial programme and certainly ruffled people's feathers, I loved it, so unique and as you say he was not afraid to say it, he was fantastic, Gone too soon. Very sad standing at his grave
No Sue it would not be aired. It would be too non pc to pass the view test. So many other classic shows from the past would be knocked off too. I was covering an anti virus passpt rally in Belfast a short while ago and utube knocked off my video saying I was putting up false info. So much censoring going on. Free speech is long gone.
Oh no, I'm half afraid to say the C word on youtube, they don't like it, so many conspiracy theory videos but they leave them up? RUclips is not great at the moment either way, people not getting notifications or getting them a day late, they should concentrate on putting our videos out more but our little country seemly doesn't matter to youtube
RIP Dermot. I sure you have them laughing in heaven.
Oh he has to have and Frank is up there now too, good old fr. Jack
Thank you
We loved Father Ted Rip Dermont Morgan and beloved father Jack Frank Kelly
You're welcome
What a great loss. If only Dermot Morgan could have been with us longer. Father Ted was one of the greatest comedy shows of all time. RIP Dermot Morgan
Complete agree with you Tony, what a great loss
We are new to your channel. Great video. We will be back for more.

@@SerenitySueGraveyards ahh it's a must see sue ,nothing has changed even down to the front door ,you use to be able to go in for tea but they stopped doing it ,but even pulling up outside it was an amazing feeling ,your right sue way to young to be taking ,thanks again for sharing only for yourself we wouldn't of knowing he was buried here in dublin ❤

Such a legend in comedy
He was amazing, great actor, so very funny
We are new to your channel. Very interesting. Great video and we are looking forward to more.
Thanks very much for subscribing, means a lot 😀
Really enjoyed learning about him and sad he died so young. I never knew of him so thanks for sharing.
Thanks Sally x x
I'll never forget Dermtot's death. Thankyou for taking us to his final resting place. He was a genius.
He was a genius, so very sad and way to young to die
Hi Sue. I'm glad to see you finally found your way to Deansgrange, and what a nice grave to visit. Was this a fleeting visit or will you have another longer video in the pipeline? Several members of my family are interred there. You could spend hours in Deansgrange finding the graves of many famous people. One I have yet to visit is that of Richard Hayes, one of the most prolific code breakers in WW2. Another interesting grave is that of Joseph Edward Woodall who won the Victoria Cross in WW1. I knew him when I was a small boy but I only learned about the VC after his untimely death. Recently I found the grave of local man Captain James William Vaughan, Royal Navy who died in 1873 aged 44. He was 12 years old when he joined the navy and his extraordinary career is documented on his fine memorial.
Hi Damien, yes I have a video coming up just a walk around and finding what we find, I did find captain James I don't think I happened on the others you say, the cemetery is so big and not many are mapped on findagrave, I really need to get back up there ❤️
Hello SUE ,🙏🍀i was about to put in the comments of a newer video 📸 could you please show us DERMOTS RESTING PLACE 🙏RIP 🙏🍀🍀 what a surprise and sadness 😓😓 Dermot went so young absolutely One of the funniest shows ever 🤣🤣🤣🤣 only because of the talented and beloved cast members 👍had to laugh my late mother who was a Sunday school teacher and very sweet loved this show when Dougal had a crazy moment which was most of the time mum always said she wanted to slap some sense into dougal 😂😂 cheers Stephen 🤠🍀🍀✌️✌️
Thanks Stephen, there will never be another like Dermot, he was hilarious
As always, this short trip to an Irish entertainment icon's grave was both informative, entertaining, & respectful. I was curious as to whether you or Irish Eyes have made a video where you visit the Shields brothers' graves ( Arthur & Will - aka "Barry Fitzgerald")? I believe they are in or near Dublin, perhaps St Mary's Church of Ireland graveyard.
Thanks, Fr Ted was amazing and Dermot Moegan is very much missed by so many. Irish eyes is now grave Visitations. No we haven't visited their graves, I actually hadn't thought of doing theirs, maybe next time we go to Dublin we'll find them thank you
God bless Sue
Thanks Donna God bless 🙌

It's a shame lot comedians pass way to early
That's so true, I think they are such excited people so funny almost on the edge his heart was weak and he just slipped away too young 😢
Never saw Fr Ted but looked like a gray show
It was amazing, so so funny, really made for great watching, Graham Norton even appeared on a few shows, you should try take a look on youtube to see some of them 😀

Taken too soon. ❤
Oh he sure was, there will never be another like him
Hi Sue, I remember when I was younger a comedian Dave Allen, does him name jog anyone's memory or I might have his name wrong. He always had a glass of whisky?
Dave Allen, yes, I think he died in England, so he's probably buried there❤️
@Carol McCorry Dave Allen is absolutely unforgettable. You'll find lots of videos of him on RUclips.
That money was only resting in his account .
🤭🤭😅😅
Brilliant actor gone to soon, Edward Mulhare is buried in cork I’m not sure if you visited his grave?
Hi Eamonn, Irish eyes did a visit to his grave in Cork while we were there ❤️❤️
@@SerenitySueGraveyards thanks I’ll check that out, Edward was another great Irish actor 👍
The grave looks like it hasn't been looked after
Unfortunately that seems to be true
Very very sad
It is Gillian ❤️
Hey sue
Hey Moe ❤️
@@SerenitySueGraveyards unfortunately here in the United States we aren't privileged to any Irish Comedies primarily the British Comedies like the previously mentioned "Are You Being Served" ?
I've never been to Ireland my ancestors were from Ireland though and it looks like a beautiful country.
You might get some on youtube, or there is a comment pinned here from Tommythecat he says where you will find Fr.Ted
