Great video Matt & Holly. That canopy looked scary when you opened it - and it was EMPTY!! But you did a good job on kitting it out. I reckon that design is one of the best compared to a ute, which I have, a traditional canopy, and a wagon. Happy trails - yes I know you have been driving for 10 mths lol, cheers.
Hi Guys, Just jumped on youtube and searched for Camping around Australia and your channel popped up. So have subscribed. My wife and I live in St Helens, Tasmania, and plan on doing a similar trip in approx 4-5 years time. We are just about to purchase a 2019 Holden Colorado Space Cab with a tray on the back. We intend to put a canopy, much like yours, on the back and also a roof top tent. We will also be towing our 5.7m Stacer boat behind us. I currently have an old 1988 60 Series Toyota Landcrusier, which has dual battery set-up, winch, drawers and fridge etc. Most of this will be pulled out of the Toyota and transferred across to the Colorado. Our plan is to fish our way around Australia. Was wondering how much the canopy on the rear was to purchase? I presume the fact that you set it out inside yourselves saved a few dollars. Enjoying your videos. Regards Geoff.
Andreas Dahl haha it makes a lot of noise but doesn’t go very fast. The baffling in the old muffler was cactus and actually restricting the exhaust coming out a bit... so I got a new one put on.... couldn’t help myself getting the one with piss all muffling 🤗
Love the video guys! Had a very similar model Hilux to yours (LN167) Was planning to add a canopy but ended up moving states & selling the ute thus buying a newer hilux Watching this makes me miss my old car!
l like your set up. Putting more foam in the tent and giving it a trial run is a really good idea. It's hard to enjoy your day, if your tired because you can't sleep, because you're bed is uncomfortable...
so weird watching a series in reverse but im back on track with you on your lap... A+ on your RTT mod, when you are going to be sleeping up there everynight for so long it has to be good. Great work on the canopy setout, looking forward to episode 7.
Like the home made racks to save some cash, but losing a little storage real estate. Love the canopy you guys have in australia... but super expensive, and not common here in the US... mostly aluminum, and fiberglass bed caps (not strong).... bought myself a 2016 Toyota Tacoma to build for offroad, and cross country treks, and see the country/sights...
Great vid guys. Ive been trying to suss out ideas for my set up, with shelving and storage (single cab with canvas canopy). What would you change with your set up now that you have been on the road for a while now?
Ant Wolff just keep the weight down, we defiantly took too much. But just make sure you have a really good comfortable bed that’s easy to set up. Mate I’d keep the general gist of my setup the same, I’d just stet to refine it and get better quality gear. But this setup has been great this trip!
Slippery Sam hey mate, I did a rig rundown recently on the channel, I go through a few things there. But my tires are pretty much the same size as stock only a little wider. I do have different suspension but the tires I have would fit with stock suspension :)
Gut Shot Bob good question. I actually got new rear suspension in recently and it’s made a world of difference. It was the original suspension in the back and it was shot. But as for the GVM it’s 2750, and I come in under that by a bit which is good :)
Hey mate, I did a whole video on the canopy. The video is on my channel its called "MRT canopy for 4WD and touring". Give it a watch all the info you will need is in it.
❤ seeing where it all started, you's have come a long way, goes to show what you can actually get going with, cheers 🍻 🤙👏
Just starting to watch this series. Very excited to view as my Misses and I are planning to do a Lap ourselves in the not too distant future.
Always find my way back to this series keeps the dream alive can’t wait to do the same
Cool starting episode, looking forward to watching the rest. :)

Great vid. What was the opening song?
I would avoid a rooftop tent personally, I know I would forget I was up there when I need to pee in the night.
The first step is a doozie!
Sean Workman piss out the window mate
Do you have a list what you took with you?
Loved the first 2 vids so far
We will do a rig rundown so you can see everything we have brought with us... 90% shit maybe 😂
All the best with the lap! Is the gas bottle legal there?
I have the same Ute and was just wondering If you have to upgrade the suspension to put bigger tires on it like yours. Thanks a lot!
Slippery Sam hey mate, I did a rig rundown recently on the channel, I go through a few things there. But my tires are pretty much the same size as stock only a little wider. I do have different suspension but the tires I have would fit with stock suspension :)
Overland Travellers thanks a lot 😀
Also just wondering what inch are they?
Slippery Sam they are 225/75/16
Overland Travellers thanks again
what are those clips on your canopy called
Whats the GVM? looks a touch on the heavy side.
Gut Shot Bob good question. I actually got new rear suspension in recently and it’s made a world of difference. It was the original suspension in the back and it was shot. But as for the GVM it’s 2750, and I come in under that by a bit which is good :)
How did your suspension go with all the extra weight?
Gabe Taylor got new rear suspension in Melbourne
How much for the canopy & where from?
Hey mate, I did a whole video on the canopy. The video is on my channel its called "MRT canopy for 4WD and touring". Give it a watch all the info you will need is in it.
what module of hilux do you have?
2000 so I think its a LN169?
Tumut?? Nsw??
How's you lux go on fuel?
Ben Moody honestly, pretty shit. Loaded up I’d be lucky to get 14L per 100km 😅
Short note - decide on a naming convention for easy searching of episodes:
YT search results will be better.
Just sayin'
