The Mrs. had one before we met, so its her 4th).
Created my own! Perfect! I've added another tap at the beginning of the pipe so I can keep the pipe empty for long storage time, less chance for the water in the pipe to go bad or develop a taste. Thank you. Looking forward to the next small project!
A good idea that suits your needs perfectly Michael. I had the same annoyance for years with lugging jerrycans in and out (and also those silly little taps at the bottom that break off) so came up with a similar but different method that suits any shape jerrycan with a large screw top. Blanked off the bottom hole, purchased a caravan sink pump for $10 at a camping show, used a hole saw to cut the correct sized hole in the centre of the large cap and screwed up the plastic hex nut on the underside. Went to Bunnings and got 600mm of the appropriate sized clear plastic food grade tube and forced it onto the bottom of the pump and screwed the lid back on. The tube reaches right to the bottom and now I can pump out water as needed and get almost all that is in the jerrycan before having to pull it out and refill. So far the plastic tube has stayed on for around 2 years with no clamp.True I don't have a hose with tap like you but I find this works extremely well and may be of interest to those who watch this video. Keep them coming!
Great clip mate obviously your not thinking of using garden hose to drink from as this will make water taste weird you need potable water hose to have no taste On the filling side if you fit another of the barbed fittings into the filler cap in the jerry can with the left over hose you have as a bleed of vent tube you can direct the over flow to a prefers location when filling without any mess in the truck This is what I have in my Ute works great So for just a few more bucks it will be more easy to fill the tank Cheers
Good idea. Allow me to suggest something. After 20 years in the Australian army I have seen my fair share of the inside of these plastic jerries when they get broken. I strongly advise you empty them and allow to dry with the caps off if you're having any length of time between trips. Otherwise you'll get a coating of slime/mould growing on the inside. First time I saw this we got ALL of our jerries and gave them a washout with a chemical (can't recall its name) to sterilise the insides. Also, just prior to reusing them give them a quick rinse. Bugs love to crawl inside.
Went for a double jerry can with a t piece and then leave on roof rack with long lead for semi perm while camping. Also used irrigation clamps. Which were cheaper. Added some o rings also behind the bung replacement. Good pressure from gravity fed. Used clear tube which was a bit pricier. But easy to hold up to check levels.
Hey a little tip, and maybe it's OCD on my part since the stuff works so well in general, but if you wind the teflon tape the other way so that it "drags" the exposed tape end instead of "pushing" the exposed end when you screw it together it can help things seal up reliably. As always thanks for the video and wherever you happen to be these days I hope your adventures are going well!
As someone who has handled hazardous/volatile liquids and gases for several years.... that is the only correct way to use that tape. Also make sure you wrap in the opposite direction you'll be screwing in. One of the best 4WD/camping hacks that I have ever seen. I’ve watched this video so many times and I’m going to replicate your idea. More like this please.
do the same thing with a water container up on your truck rack for a shower rig ....sun will warm the water up for ya .....thanks for the video 👍 happy trails .....sb
Now add an airline fitting to the cap, turn on your compressor for pressurised water. A trigger nozzle works well as a shower, or jet stream to clean your boots.
@toilet paper The airline to the Jerry can pressurises the air in the top of the can, forcing the water out of the hose at a higher pressure than just gravity.
I have had this set up in my 4X4 for about 3 years now. I have one of those spray nozzles on mine and I don’t need the tap as they seal when you let go of the trigger.
Great vid. I'm using one of those green Jerry cans with the nozzle that came with it and is always getting bumped and leaks... Now I'm off to Bunnings... Thanks bro
Build a 10+ gallon ABS rooftop tank you can pressurize...or spend an assload of money and buy one. Either way, a roof-top tank makes more sense to me. Adding pressure + sprayer just adds benefits. Here in the States on BLM land during fire season, we're required to carry water + shovel to put out fires...if my exhaust starts a small burn, easy to put out without pulling out my fire extinguisher. ABS is black, makes warm water...easy shower. Drinking? Not 100%, actually....but from what I've read ABS is OK for potable water. Can still carry a jerry can or 2 to top-off when overland.
I had my water tank built in under the body. Cold water at the back hot water up front, it was geat when the kids were very young when out bush. Tanks every where also included four diesel fuel tanks, it gave the vehicle a low centre of gravity when full. Cheers
Great Idea. The only chance I made to my set up is I went to a food safe clear vinyl hose and it didn’t leave a flavour like the garden hose. I know it won’t hurt you but it made my cup of tea taste that bit better. Great vid!!
I use a brand new pioson sprayer. Pump it up holds the pressure a uses stuff all water. Not real good if you are trying to get a drink but good for washing hands and the like.
Did this setup but with a 25L water can. After having used it on several occasions the only mod i would do to it is to make the hose disconnectable so it stores easier without putting a kink in the hose.
The only issue is that the garden hose isn't food save, that is, the machine that is used to make the hose is lubricated with a Heavy Metal (LEAD usually) where as FOOD SAFE hose machine uses a TIN based Lubricant.
Great idea.. but if you add a tee to the line with some clear tube that is fastened to the inside of vehicle vertically it acts as a method of seeing how much water is left in the jerry can.
Great work. I've only just landed on your channel and am really enjoying it. Just a quick tip. When you were in Bunnings the light a were flashing a lot. Switch your camera to PAL instead of NTSC for indoor shots. They should fix that problem. It has to do with the electricity feeding the lights. I learnt the hard way. LOL
The US mil spec water cans or the Scepter water cans have two capped outlets on the cap which can be used in a similar fashion. Just lay it on the front edge instead of sitting upright and you can use it as a decent water source.
bunnings have pvc clear flex pipe same sizes would recommend using clear for making sure hose is clean of mold ect. and would probably be cheaper than pope hose and taste less like walking home on a hot summers day and sneaking a drink from someones front yard hose lol.
There's BSPP and BSPT, the parrallel thread usually has an o ring to seal the joint, and the tapered thread requires teflon tape or similar to seal effectively.
You have a Food Grade Jerry Can & you purchased & used non Food Grade Hose. You Should use Food Grade hose, the same as caravaners use. It is usually BLUE, or an identifying colour, depending on the brand, I have two rolls, stored in canvas bags to keep clean, along with a filter. I use them to fill my built in water tank. Only ever use Drinking Water hosed for Drinking, not for washing the fourby!!
Way better than using the taps that come with the water containers. They are so easy to knock and accidentally turn on or even break off. We gave up using any connectors to the water containers years ago and now just use our 'pump inna box' :)
Use a jiggle siphon. Costs $15 from Autobarn or Supercheap. If you don't know what they are then look them up. Idea credit goes to Roaming the Outback. Also easier to wash and rinse than a hose that is permanently connected to to jerry.
I just got back from Fraser Island after a week using 2 x jerrys the "old way" and will be installing your hack for next time. Considering I camped with 2 plumbers you would think they would have advised me of this, youd reckon eh...... great stuff old son.....
food for thought, i have added a hose connector with male thread to the Jerry in place of the black hose fitting and hose clamp, allows the hose to rotate and not damage the Jerry cans crappy plastic thread :)
Awesome mate thank you, ive done this to 2 black plastic 20 litre cans and put a shower head on each and mount them on my roof rack for hot solar water ,thanks again for the idea ,
A black bottle up on the roof rack , gives hot water ( solar ) , great for showers at the end of the day ! :) The added height gives even better water pressure , as well . :)
this actually gave me a good idea. instead of the hose, just go right for the upgraded spigot end perhaps in my case. most seem to come with not the greatest spigots.
Just another Tip/Hack use potable water fittings other wise you will taint the taste of the water. Using standard hose is ok for washing and other uses but can make the water taste foul. (The hotter the environment he worse it tastes) (And yes I will drink out of a garden hose but the difference is I flush water thru it first where out camping you cant afford to waste water in a lot of locations)
Plumber tip: when applying teflon tape on threads flip the roll the other way around. This way you don't end up with a meter of excess tape. Just let the roll spin between your fingers while you spin it around the threads.
A bit of a Warning, this is Non-food grade by adding the hose n fittings. As the water sits in the hose/fittings, If you have to drink out of it, it might make you sick and the longer it sits in there, the more sick you may get, if you have to drink out of it, discard the first couple of seconds of water each use.
Hi. A small criticism. I believe you wrapped the ptfe tape in the wrong direction. Best to wrap so that it doesn't want to unravel as you screw it in. Also wondering if the hose is food grade plastic. I think some of them give off chemicals, but not too sure. Hope helps. Enjoyed watching.
You could probably have the other end of the hose that you cut attached to the top so that if it was going to overfill, it'd run out that (and back out of the truck).
If you had the valve on the other side of your connector, you'd get really good pressure when filling the Jerry can with your hose at home. Attach hose to fill, gets full, close valve, disconnect hose, reconnect spigot/tap/opening valve. Great otherwise and I'm sure it's still great exactly like this.
I would make a water lock breather that vents to outside the cab. It allows you to fill without spilling any internally, allows water to flow out the tap without having to reach in to undo the cap to let air in, it allows you to back fill and it's a dust proof way of making a breather that allows air in and out but no dust ingress. Putting pressured air in will explode your Jerry. Better off buying a diaphragm pump if you want pressurized water as suggested by others.
So, I don't have a car setup for camping like yours, and I don't think I ever want to have one (just personal preference), but I love watching your videos.
you forgot to mention the use for the leftover piece of hose. You can leave it near your good garden hose so the housos take that for their bongs instead of chopping up your good hose
Hi, are you able to post a product list of what you bought to do this please? Love your videos mate very helpful with people like me who are new to 4x4/camping
Why didn't you get fitting that went t a garden hose. Then you wouldn't need the hose clamp. You wouldn't have to cut the hose . It would give you more reach. Great idea and video , thanks And have a great day

Mate just did your jerry can hack 👌👍 works an absolute treat.... thanks heaps...
Hi mate I needed a refresher on how to do things the right
Hope things are going well
Awesome mate thank you, ive done this to 2 black plastic 20 litre cans and put a shower head on each and mount them on my roof rack for hot solar water ,thanks again for the idea ,
Nice one mate. Just followed your how to and fixed two jerries on the trailer. Great hack.👍👍
great video once more...
Try using some food grade hose next time.. It wont have the green hose taste.
Neat back. Gonna try this myself. Hello from North Carolina, USA
A black bottle up on the roof rack , gives hot water ( solar ) , great for showers at the end of the day ! :)
The added height gives even better water pressure , as well . :)
Nice tip. I would also suggest using portable water hose rather than garden
this actually gave me a good idea. instead of the hose, just go right for the upgraded spigot end perhaps in my case. most seem to come with not the greatest spigots.
I suggest you use food grade hose. Usually white. Used for boats etc. Same idea but safer for drinking.
Fantastic . . . Yet so simple. Awesome too that there is a Bunnings store almost everwhere in Australia 😁
Just another Tip/Hack use potable water fittings other wise you will taint the taste of the water. Using standard hose is ok for washing and other uses but can make the water taste foul. (The hotter the environment he worse it tastes) (And yes I will drink out of a garden hose but the difference is I flush water thru it first where out camping you cant afford to waste water in a lot of locations)
haha that has to be a setup! when has anyone been to Bunnings and found them In Stock for everything you need!
When has anyone ever been to Bunnings and even found what they want !
@@shellez101 Bunnings opened up stores in the UK, they found no customers! Crazy business move, must have cost them millions!
Plumber tip: when applying teflon tape on threads flip the roll the other way around. This way you don't end up with a meter of excess tape. Just let the roll spin between your fingers while you spin it around the threads.
"How simple is that"....Indeed.... Life just got simpler...Thanks much !
This is awesome! Totally doing this. Cheers!
A bit of a Warning, this is Non-food grade by adding the hose n fittings. As the water sits in the hose/fittings, If you have to drink out of it, it might make you sick and the longer it sits in there, the more sick you may get, if you have to drink out of it, discard the first couple of seconds of water each use.
use a poly pipe instead of gardon hose unless you want your water to taste like an old tyre
Great vid. We could also consider using food grade hose.
Have a float popping up through the top cap marking how full you can is when filling it the way you suggested
Absolutely awesome video mate, Bunnings always to the rescue
Nice.
If you use clear vinyl tubing you could hold it up to see the level in your Jerry can. 👍🏻
Start of your walk cracked me up then the clip coming back had me in tears🤣thanks dude
Hey bro can you add on the page the parts you bought
Closing in on 50K subscibers Your doing really well keep it up.
Tha k you, the spigot on our water jug doesn't play well, so now I know what to do to fix it, some times, I get bone headed.
Ok chaps stupid question. Dos it have to be a certain Jerry can ? I got one from super cheap an seems the thread is different?
Brilliant idea. I would just add a zip tie around the gap on the hose connector so it can’t be slid open.
Hi, are you able to post a product list of what you bought to do this please? Love your videos mate very helpful with people like me who are new to 4x4/camping
Highly recommend to use water pipe non toxic camec Pope oz trail food grade - good idea mate
When you put thread tape wind it on the the other direction and it will tighten in its self
Why didn't you get fitting that went t a garden hose. Then you wouldn't need the hose clamp. You wouldn't have to cut the hose . It would give you more reach. Great idea and video , thanks
And have a great day
Yes you would want a hose for portable water if consuming the water
@@kjcayote930 I think you mean "potable" water, that is, water you can drink. Not "portable" water, which is water you can carry. Though in this case it is both, lol!
I want a hack for the small white taps that come with these types of containers. Trying to get it tight enough to seal, but still face DOWN, crazy hard.
Fit a air fitting to the top and hook up you compressor for cheap high pressure
