      Well, Swiss German is not even one of our „official“ languages despite it being the most spoken language here. Kinda strange but it has some feasibility since Swiss German doesn't really have defined spelling and there are many different dialects that have unique words and phrases.

    Well, the Habsburgs were not foreign conquerors. They came from what is now Swiss territory, as well as from Alsace and Breisgau. After the Staufers died out, they tried to take over the Duchy of Swabia and the Kingdom of Burgundy. In developing Switzerland, they finally failed with the Swabian War of 1499/1500, and their center of power shifted to Austria from 1282 onwards.

    IMO the one single word that defines Switzerland for me is "Eidgenossenschaft" as it refers to a union of equal individuals bound by an oath, as the highest form of mutual commitment.
    So it reflects the history of the Swiss people and it's development away from feudalism by emphasizing self-governance and equality in a high-trust-society, where members collectively resisted hierarchical rule and gained increasing autonomy.

    • @alexpetrov6079

    Fun fact: the southwestern half of modern Canton Ticino, the districts of Vallemaggia, Locarno, Lugano, and Mendrisio, came into Swiss possession essentially as payment for mercenary work during the Italian Wars of the XVI century. If that hadn't happened, there's a real chance that today Italian would have about the same number of speakers as Romansch in Switzerland, simply because the Swiss-Italian border would be just west of Bellinzona and Biasca.

    • @jean-yvessovilla3183
      @jean-yvessovilla3183 Месяц назад

      But in 1815, the people in the conquered places ( canton de Vaud, Ticino, Argaau) decided to be swiss, and places like Valtelina which was given to Piemont Kingdom tried to go back to Switzerland. So even peoples caught by war did like Switzerland.

    One little thing. In the swiss german speaking part we only speak german in school. In private we speak swiss german. The swiss german language/dialects near to the austrian and german border can be understand by austrian and germans who life near the border. If you go deeper inside switzerland the dialects are getting harder to understand. There are also dialects in the alps area what some swiss german speakers don’t understand. Go to zermatt by the matterhorn mountain. If an older guy speaks the local dialect i also need some minutes to adapt de dialect. But hey, this is switzerland. We have a bunch of different ways to solve things. But in the end we do it for the whole country. Hope we can save the rätoromanian language.

    The origin of Swiss neutrality isn't in that nobody wanted to attack them, it's in them being too small to be likely to benefit from playing the game of great power politics. Many small states in Europe took that position after 1812. When wars came knocking anyways many of them abandoned that strategy, but the Swiss managed to stay neural so they hang on to it. Much like the Swedes did until 2022.
    For the long term, the Swiss are surrounded on all sides by EU memberstates, and all but one neighbor are in NATO. That makes them safe and able to integrate, but also relatively powerless. I guess we'll see if they choose to become less neutral in exchange for closer cooperation or not. Since 2022 they have cooperated with most sanctions against Russia, which indicates neutrality has its limits.

    • @Gohrod

      well, we could probably also say that Switzerland is surrounded by NATO member states - more precisely, Switzerland together with Liechtenstein and Austria. Which basically means, that these 3 countries are quite safe as long as they keep good relationships with each other and with NATO / the NATO members.
      Even without being members of NATO, they are basically "shielded" by NATO against many types of hostile attacks by other non-NATO-members, at least as far as ground attacks and violations of their airspace are concerned.

      @@tobyk.4911 I think austria isnt really safe in a big europeen war (which counts germany and balkan) because austrias millitary isnt as good as switzerlands and they are at a place that many countries conquer to reach other lands.

      In Ticino we also have dialects but use Italian as common language.
      German speaking swiss cling to their dialect to differentiate themselves from "official german" as a memory when Germany expressed some interest, mainly culturally to define Switzerland as being part of a pan Germanic cultural ensemble in Europe.
      So Schwiizerdütsch in Zurich or Bern is sexy while speaking our local Lombard dialect is frown upon by the highly cultured Swiss germans.
