This was truly one of the most strangest yet delicious things! If I made it again (which I will) i'd definitely season the mince and add some real kick in there. It's quite mild but just a really fun recipe to make. Here's the steps if you want to give it a go! Full recipe / write up barrylewis.net/recipe/the-self-crusting-cheeseburger-impossible-pie/
Why do you call it cottage cheese pie i thought it was called shepherds pie isn’t it the one you make with a ground beef potatoes cheese bacon green bean and corn is that the same
I’m 59 and you brought me back to my childhood in the 70’s. My mom made that a lot back then. She worked and it was easy. We lost her three years ago and this video brought back a lot of memories of her. Thank you for that.
Your ambivalence about this recipe cracked me up. The Bisquick version was my favorite as a kid. You are right, it has a very mild, kid friendly flavor. My mom put sliced tomatoes under the cheese layer.
Wonderful! It looks like it turned out so yummy. Recipes like this are definitely classics from when I was a kid. My fave now is a cornbread-topped beef and poblano pepper pie/casserole, which is surprisingly similar to Bisquick pies. It's got cheese, taco seasoning, corn, garlic - all kinds of delicious flavors, and topped with sour cream. It's been my fave comfort food to make in the last year. Food like this is simple and so good, and the leftovers are always awesome. Thanks as always, Barry!!
Thank you so much for posting this up today. Woke up to the news that my grandfather died this morning. Love your channel, they always make me smile and boy do I need that today. So thank you so much for helping me through this day.
I'm American and vividly remember my mother making all kinds of "impossible pies" growing up. Cheeseburger pie was one of my favorites! She also made one that had blueberry pie filling, raspberries, cream cheese, and cherries that came out like a swirled cheesecake 😋
Interesting take on bisquick's impossible cheeseburger pie. A true staple of the South. More of a onions and mushrooms person than the gherkins and it comes out better with slightly finer dice.
The more impressively "impossible" variation of the Biscuik "impossible" pie is the chicken pot pie. The idea there is that the outside forms a crust but the filling inside remains a liquid gravy.
I was thinking what to make for dinner tomorrow. Now I know, Thanks Barry. Haven't made this in a very long time. Hope you had a great break and a great New Year.
Happy New year, Barry! I managed to avoid pretty much everything to do with Christmas, last year. I don't normally bother with it, and usually try to work it, but wasn't allowed to this year. I worked Christmas eve night, and slept all the next day. I made myself some sardine pasta, and was happy with it. I can't be doing with huge meals nowadays. The thought of Christmas dinner fills me with dread. Small and often suits me fine, thanks. That garlic pepper is proper moreish, by the way. Great on boiled eggs.
It's great to see you back on RUclips, Barry. A belated happy new year to you and your family. Having never been a fan of cottage pie, though, I think I'll give this recipe a miss!
I made this today. Half quantities as there are only 2 of us. Used rehydrated soya mince, using vegetarian beef flavour stock powder and a dab of yeast extract plus the obligatory glug of apple cider vinegar to get rid of the soya pong/taste. Really enjoyed it!
When I was in my teen years, the Impossible Vegetable Quiche was extremely popular. It used Bisquick, and it was so delicious. I made it many times. I'm sure there is a recipe available somewhere that is similar to this, and offers and adaptation for countries where Bisquick is not available. There are many savory Impossible pies and they were really fun to try. Thanks for making this video! Best wishes to you and your family.
I've made this and it's awesome. I've also had a breakfast version, using breakfast sausage and maple syrup in the batter like a pancake. It was served with fruit pie filling on the side.
I grew up eating this in the American south, along with the 'crustless coconut pie' version. These days I do the taco version, with the ground meat, taco seasoning, cheese, onion and tomato, topped with more cheese and salsa. Yums!
One amazing seasoning I discovered was a local source in the Maritimes that makes a wonderful lavender pepper. It's from Nova Scotia, I believe, and we only had the one jar of it in my first apartment. My roommates had acquired it and it was BEAUTIFUL on eggs!
My mom made this for me growing up and it’s still my favorite thing she makes. I’ve made it before but it’s never as good as moms. Thanks for making a uk friendly version that I can make now. Translating recipes is my new norm and it gets exhausting after a bit.
I have a genuine question about the chopper. I bought one some time ago and I noticed the top grid piece that pushes the food through the blades seem a bit off. A couple of the squares have nicks in the grid. Is there a way to better align the part as to not do that? I do love it, I use it multiple time a week. A great time saver.
My wife and I only discovered your channel last week and have already power watched so many of your videos. Just made some chocolate and peanut butter fudge and it was great! Love the 4321 videos! Looking forward to making loads more stuff with you. What's with the amount of chocolate orange recipes though? 😄
I gave this a go, but I made the batter a lot thicker and more of it, and it made almost a bread on top, which made it much more burger like. A double layer of burger cheese halfway down the pie also helped with that.
The impossible pie I have tried (years ago, from an appliance recipe book) was basically a custard pie with a coconut top. It was, iirc, eggs, sugar, milk, flour, shredded coconut and butter, all in a blender. The coconut and butter clump and when put in the baking vessel, floats. During cooking the flour seems to sink making a soft but definitely different textured layer at the bottom, the middle is baked custard, the top is a coconut crust. The idea of a savoury version? I might try it!
If this pandemonic time ever ends you should do a testing of different kinds of mustards (there are really interesting ones across Europe) and kinds of pickles and gherkins (is this how it's written?). Such a variety and in my area it is a household staple.
Just a quick clever trick (that I may have learnt from this channel...) - put your grater on its side and grate so the cheese stays in the grater! I've never looked back
I've made several Bisquick impossible pies over the years, and the cheeseburger is my fave! If you can get your hands on a box of Bisquick, it will be much easier to make these pies
Barry and fellow Lewisites, So Carmen's commentary on the proposed natural cheese pull was 'So when will it happen? Maybe Tomorrow, Maybe never but NOT today that's for sure.' I see I'm not the only commentator who's mom used bisquick. I'm 70 and my mom in the 60s had it If you want to duplicate bisquick just use regular flour with a leavening agent, baking powder, it also has a bit of sugar in it (I never bother with that) and oils (which will be in other things like egg yolks, again I don't bother with that either) The 'recipie' is 1 cup flour, half a tablespoon of baking powder, half a teaspoon salt, 1 tablespoon oil. My mom made a few things with bisquick but ALWAYS made us very light, fluffy dumplings over soups and stews. Hope this helps with future bisquik emergencies hahaha Jim Oaxaca Mexico
I've made garlic pepper before. It's easy. Just put whole peppercorns and granulated garlic in a clean coffee grinder and whiz it up until the pepper is fine enough for you. The great thing about doing it this way? The garlic absorbs all those volatile oils from the pepper, the stuff that makes fresh-ground taste so much better than the pre-ground pepper you get in a tin.
This was truly one of the most strangest yet delicious things! If I made it again (which I will) i'd definitely season the mince and add some real kick in there. Barry is time travelling holy doly
Happy new year Barry 🎉
Barry, any way you would release just the chopper, and leave out the other stuff? I really like my garlic press and don't need any peelers anymore.
Yuck, I pressed the subscribe button and magically I’m now unsubed.

Did Barry start singing "Cherry Pie," and then started humming the second line of the chorus of I Love Rock 'N' Roll by Joan Jett?
yes
He definitely put another dime in the jukebox... baby.
i love rock n roll
tastes so good make a grown man cry 🎶
Cant have that copy strike!

This takes me back, my grandma made the best cheeseburger pie! We still have her cook book with the recipe page well worn! Thanks Barry!
There s a entire book off Bisquick impossible pie recipes. Tamale pie is also quite good, and coconut pie.
Your ambivalence about this recipe cracked me up. The Bisquick version was my favorite as a kid. You are right, it has a very mild, kid friendly flavor. My mom put sliced tomatoes under the cheese layer.

The dessert version of this is called a Clafoutis, traditionally made with Cherry and Almond.
Or an "impossible pie", traditionally made with apples.
What a lovely early birthday present, I’ve been looking forward to watching your next video 😊
Welcome back! Forgot how much I looked forward to watching your videos.
