Yes, the most touching scene is the one between the father and Simon, the true lover. I cried when the father said to Simon : So you are my son too". I had always wanted my parents to feel happy for me if I found someone I truly loved and who truly loved me, even if that someone were a guy. Now that's never gonna happen cos my father had passed away.
I was reading Michelle Citron's "Home Movies and Other Necessary Fictions" and this sort of reminds me of that... lovely video essay. This is one of my favorite movies and when the father raises his arms at the end of the movie, it is one of the most heartbreaking and poignant gestures I have ever seen. I don't know how it says so much.
One of my favorite films... thanks for this excellent essay! BTW, us older gay guys used to call the scene you describe of removing all the homoerotic art, photos and objects and moving your boyfriend into the guest bedroom before the parents come to visit as "straightening up the house"!
I thought this was just a video you did for fun until I heard "video essay"... it's so well made that I thought it was one of those watchmojo videos, lol.
I like this movie, it's warm, touching and romantic. There are cute scenes and fun with the characters. "Simon and Wei-Tung , Wei-Wei" 3 affiliation Taiwan USA, China heart as one It is friendship, love, mutual understanding. I understand Taiwanese parents, they have high expectations for their son and inheriting the family name is the most important thing. 🤟"...
