Absolute gold, and part of the greatness of reaction channels. Edit: I also agree whole heartedly with the red-headed women thing, they are some of the most beautiful women.
This song is absolutely great. It deconstructs ideas about race and prejudice, while also playing with language. He's clearly being empathetic with the struggles of race, but is also throwing up questions like how mocking ginger people is kind of considered to be a "socially acceptable" form of prejudice that still goes on every day. Minchin is an absolute genius.
@Michael David not Irish but an actual ginger here. No Irish in my bloodline. Real Ginger, not red red, but ginger, and even teachers used to call me names in school while racial prejudice was discussed and taught against. Meanwhile I got identified by my hair by everyone including people in authority condoning the bullying by calling me some of those names and calling me out by my hair instead of my name. It was very socially acceptable. Even your own narrowed view of who is a ginger is very telling
The brilliant thing about it, is that the song is not just about Prejudice, but the very mechanic of the song highlights the fact that people are prejudging the content and meaning of the song itself.
@@bonolio The second half of ur statement is the entire reason of the song. Forget all the other dribble, every single reaction is the same, they got the letters, prejudged the word being referenced then realised how wrong they were. Its brilliant, a simple concept wrapped up in 1 song.
@@bonolio it's clever - dunno if I'd go so far as to call it "brilliant" - it's only slightly removed from the Jeopardy episode of South Park where Randy takes what should have been the word "naggers" and makes a complete and total jackass of himself, and I'm sure the SP episode came _long_ before this song. The song is clever no doubt, but likely not very original and was probably based on either that South Park episode or something similar.
also it was, as far as I've heard, his way of 'apologizing' for actually using the N word in a song cuz he's from Australia and didn't know what it actually meant. Not completely sure if that's a myth or fact, but if it is it's kinda cool, much better than a hollow apology
The best part about Tim is he really is preaching about not being racist, he doesn't want people to think he just stands on a soapbox. So if he can add some comedy, the audience will laugh and hopefully catch his msg also. Great reaction.
Early in his career Tim Minchin got blasted for using the N-word during a comedy festival in the UK. So this song was a reaction to that controversy. If you think this is about the color of someone's hair you might be mistaken ;-)
It's clever on so many levels. If you decide to be offended, you're offended - back in the day 'Queer' was so derogatory & hateful, but the gay community took it on board, owned it & it completely lost it's sting.
Oh, I think he got ALL of us the first time we ever heard this song. I was squirming in my seat so hard until ‘ginger’ came in. Your face was priceless! The lyrics for this are so good.

A couple Australian terms in it you may not be familiar with: Ginger Nuts are a type of biscuit that definitely taste better after dunking into tea or other beverage. Minge is slang for female pubic hair.

Not just the first part; The whole song is actually about the other word. It's just that by using the G word, he makes it socially acceptable. The reference to skin colour "sensitive to UV", "once you go ginge you can't go back", etc are barely disguised references to the real topic. Genius on multiple levels. He starts by pretty much forcing the listener to think of one word. Then the switch that takes us into a new place, and then the gentle reminders. I've seen this a bunch of times, and I've just noticed yet another touch of genius. When he does that little spoken bit about "it's a homophone", that's hiding an upward modulation. If you just listened to his voice then you'd swear it's a simple mistake (if you even noticed it at all), but listening to the piano it's absolutely an intentional change. Can't believe I missed a whole freaking modulation for years - jeez he's good.

I love your humility, Mugnify! You said you weren't paying attention, but actually you were. Tim is talented and he's been very calculated in the structure of the song, including the spelling of the word. Two Gs, an R and an E, and then he intentionally concludes the line with an I and an N, and so our brain is left thinking about the N. It's both an example of conditioning on an individual and a societal level and a deconstruction of it at the same time. Mastery of language and musical presentation on display here. Loved your reaction!
I’ve always noticed the lighting, but I just assumed it was to suddenly plant the idea of RED in the viewers mind. He’s spot on about the blue disguising his hair colour, which I’d never thought of before. Clever LX tech.

As an Australian he was ignorant to how strong that word was. After he played that original song in the US. He reflected, changed the lyrics, and made this song. Not as an apology but to express his growth and understanding.

I like that he foreshadows the twist with the line "Even I am careful with it". Also in case some are wondering Ginger Nuts has a double meaning as they are a brand of biscuit in Australia(I think England aswell).
Tim's 'Thankyou God' is a lyrical masterpiece. 'Cont' is deliberately misleading, a bit like Prejudice. His 'Pope Song' is great too - especially the Sydney Symphony Orchestra version.
I was sooo lucky we managed to get tickets to see the Sydney orchestra tour live! It was amazing! I’d seen the show already on dvd and then we managed to grab tickets to see him in Liverpool somehow fairly cheap and we got front row seats don’t know how! Some wizardry by my ex because Manchester so completely sold out, but it was sooooooo worth it that show gave me goose bumps the whole time the orchestra fit so well with his new material and his old material I loved it.
I've watched probably 8 of these reactions because the algorithm thinks I like it but you are the first to point out the lighting on the hair. Even I never noticed it.
As a ginger myself reactions to this song are absolutely hilarious to me, especially when people tense up as soon as they get what is implied. Well played, sir! :D "You better not rap!" lmao Even though the song really isn't about us redheads at all, I still hold it very dear to my heart as a sort of comedy anthem to our minor struggles. I just love Tim's work in general - I never know which aspect of it to be most impressed by. He's not only a funky motherf'kn ginge', he's also a truly brilliant one.
it is a testament to his genius, to lead in with the spelling of a word that should never be said. to then subvert the idea forming in your head as to what he is going to say. to then make it about being a ginger. all the while the underlying truth of what he means is hanging there in a way everyone still gets the meaning. this song is about prejudice after all. as an Aussie i do love Tims work, again the guy is a musical and comedic genius.
This is the first of your content I have watched Sir, I am well familiar with Tim, and I have seen a couple of reactions to this video before. So I was watching your face carefully. It went from happy smiling to that moment when you realised your mistake, then realised what the anagram was, and fell into Tim's trap. At that moment you started to listen to what he had to say. Your genuine reaction as it sunk in was priceless Dude! And then you let yourself just enjoy the music. And Tim is so talented! What a great pianist. Oh, I'm guessing your significant other isn't a red head? 😆Your genuine like ability has earned you a Like and a Sub !
The song is titled Prejudice for a very good reason. The first half almost forced the audience to engage in a little prejudice, as they almost universally decide what the word is before he makes it perfectly clear that the prejudgement is wrong. It makes sense that his song would be about what it is, and not the other word, as an Australian, one word is used with derision, whilst the other has none of the meaning it has in America.
I love that you didn’t know Tim’s work, but not only appreciated the clever leading down a certain path (where the mostly white audiences start panicking, because they’re hoping to God it doesn’t go wrong and leave them thinking they’re about to be part of some terrible moment). I also love that you fessed up to being caught out.. we all were. I’m a very upper middle class, middle-aged Guardian-reading Brit, and I was there thinking, “Oh TIM! No!! Don’t do this to us, please!! You haven’t let us down before and this is just not something we’re going to be comfortable with!!”. Great that someone who clearly knows his shit can so quickly validate a mere audience impression that he’s not just great with the comedy glances to the audience, but a bloody good musician and lyricist. Also cool that you got as caught out as every one of us, even those of us who know his work well. Enjoyed your experience of it every bit as much as we did (and the bloody relief.. I mean, nobody was expecting how that discomfort would turn to relief and then an ability to laugh at our own mistaken perspective). Nice work from both of you. Bloody clever bastard, isn’t he? And you keep up the excellent work!
Thank you so much for this!! Tim's humor was perfectly appreciated by you and I could not stop laughing at HIS humor and APPRECIATING your understanding.

it is a testament to his genius, to lead in with the spelling of a word that should never be said. to then subvert the idea forming in your head as to what he is going to say. to then make it about being a ginger.
all the while the underlying truth of what he means is hanging there in a way everyone still gets the meaning. this song is about prejudice after all.
as an Aussie i do love Tims work, again the guy is a musical and comedic genius.
I'm a Tim Minchin fan and I never noticed the lighting change
This man is so talented musically and comedically. No requests from me because you'll love anything he does 💙
This is the first time I've seen a reaction to this song that encompassed the full range of "this mfer is clever... ok... no... he's too clever".
Your reaction was priceless. It was great to hear you laugh.
Welcome to the world of Tim. You’re gonna love it
Your face 😂
When I watched this the first time I laughed so hard when he started singing about gingers.
He performs this so well.
I’m a long time Tim Minchin fan, I love watching reactions to this song and yours is now up their in my favourites
The song is titled Prejudice for a very good reason. The first half almost forced the audience to engage in a little prejudice, as they almost universally decide what the word is before he makes it perfectly clear that the prejudgement is wrong. It makes sense that his song would be about what it is, and not the other word, as an Australian, one word is used with derision, whilst the other has none of the meaning it has in America.
love Tim lmao, especially for this song as a natural redhead 😂
Love your reaction to this. Tim Minchin is my lord and savior when it comes to musical comedy!
4:46 love your face right now 😆 not what you expected hey
We Aussie's ❤Tim
Priceless reaction, laughing so hard my dog came to check on me, Tim is amazing.
Totally one of our greats!!! Totes deconstructed narrative around prejudice even for those who have endured prejudice ………😂😂😂
10000 out of 10 loaded silence. Bravo.
This is the best reaction video I have EVER seen! Just perfect. Tim Minchin has some amazing songs. You want to check out Not Perfect.
Lmao.. that face tho when he said Ginger.. :oP
Thank you so much for this!! Tim's humor was perfectly appreciated by you and I could not stop laughing at HIS humor and APPRECIATING your understanding.
I'm glad you appreciated it and appreciate you enjoyed it.
Holy MOSES! The combo of the both of you…it’s 630a on a Sunday morning and I have started my day sobbing in utter LAUGHTER 😂🤣😂🤣🙌🏻 Thank you for starting my day off so well ❤️🤗🥰💃🏻
That is the best facial reaction I have ever seen to this song 🤣🤣🤣
Don’t look at the camera like a cat who just found a pill in their treat. He got me too, except I was laughing my ass off.
I've seen Tim's video dozens of times, and I never noticed the lighting before.
As an Aussie Ginger, welcome to my world....!
Props to you for showing your reaction. He got you. He got us all too. And then he makes the point with humour. Yup, an amazing talent
Omg two for the price of one! I'm in stitches 😂
He got all of us!
I respect your appreciation for the ladies with beautiful red hair.
Keep up the great work. One Love
Tim's stuff is just all amazing. I first found him through Storm, which is an incredible beat poem, and I keep going back to it over and over haha
I think Storm is my favourite of his (closely followed by White Wine in the Sun)
This is still one of my favorite Tim minchin songs😂😂 a classic gotcha
