  • I don't often fence longsword vs. saber but it's always interesting when I do.

Great showcasing of some beautifully executed textbook cuts and great form from both fencers.

Michael Brown is a great fencer, I had the pleasure of meeting him at RO this year. It’s always great meeting someone else who practices broadsword, there aren’t many of us left.

I appreciate it, but I’m actually standing in the background! That’s Colt, who dresses similar to me!

As a novice, it helps greatly to see that even experienced fencers occasionally falls for those cheeky hand snipes 😅

Looks like a blast! Couldn't help but notice those hits at the end were a bit more liberal than the rest, lol. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, whack whack! 😅

It's really cool to see the way that you use stances to keep your opponent from taking advantage of their reach. I would have expected him to snipe for the hand more, but you do what you've talked about so often in your shorts: transition between stances in such a way that not only keeps your hands close but also leaves multiple lines of attack that your opponent has to consider. Really, really cool, man. Thanks for putting your practice on the internet.

The saberist did kind of amazingly well considering the reach and power advantage of the longsword.

Power advantage, yes, reach less so. Although the longsword might be longer, a sword held in one hand can profile for extra reach over a sword held in two. In practice, they end up with about the same reach.
I'd say the real versus of attributes here was the longsword's power versus the sabre's very protective hilt.

How does one get into this? I've been interested in getting started but I don't know what to look for. Are there clubs?

Yes just search HEMA clubs. Really depends on where you live though.

There are clubs all over the world, Google “HEMA Club in my area” or “Historical Fencing Club in my area”

Beautiful attack at 2:15. Am I correct in calling it a krump into an unterhau?
Also, very clean krump at 4:40, even if he managed to riposte successfully.

I've always felt that a saber will by default be outmatched by a longsword, so I was happy to see that it's not always the case.

As a complete beginner attempting to teach himself, watching your competition videos at .25 speed is wildly helpful. It might sound weird, but it's helped me understand what your intent/ line of thought is for every move you make, as well as making the exchanges far easier to make out since you're both moving at a quarter speed. It was possible to see you think about moves you could make in certain circumstances and think about what *I* might do when in that situation. I would highly recommend it if you can tolerate the noise.
