- Welcome to Movie Shortens. Clay is traveling home when there is suddenly a zombie apocalypse. He forms a small group of survivors who join him to seek out his family that he believes may have survived. On the way, they discover that they have all been having their dreams invaded by the Night Traveler - a character from Clay’s graphic novels. Who is this character and what is his connection to the mobile phone signals??

Wow you're right, even about my favorite John Cusack movie, "Max" which is very good.
After Clay (Cussck) and Tom (Jackson) escaped from the zombies, they found a hotel to hide out, and Clay picked the room 1408 even when Tom told him that is probably not a good idea… and y’all know the rest of that story…

Then Clay was able to escape from room 1408, just in time to get his family and take them to ships in China before the world ended.

This is one of those stories that works far better set in the time it was written. The book came out before smart phones, and thus before texting was anywhere near as popular as it was by 2016. In an actual 2016 airport, most of those people would be texting, or just scrolling through the internet.

Edit: well damn. They left out everything that made the book great. Alice was such a badass, and her death was gutwrenching. The prep school headmaster is murdered by the hive mind while everyone is sleeping. And the end is actually painfully hopeful. Johnny, fo fo you.
Right??!! And the part with the Hotel Clerk? And the visions of Harvard man? Alice’s original death was a kick in the teeth, this just didn’t have the same impact.
It's too bad that this movie was so bad, because the book was AMAZING. Especially, since part of the story took place in my home town. Sadly, in the book, my entire city was engulfed in flames lol
The book sucked imo. I read it years ago and was mad I read hundreds of pages for nothing to be concluded, resolved, or explained.

the book was so good i read it 10x as a child. Shame this movie has literally nothing in common with the book other than cellphones. It butchers everything even the main characters. I'd love how Tom is meant to be an obese, awkward, friendly, OCD-tend gay man yet played by sam.... The schoolteacher died of suicide! Alice's death was gutwrenching and out of nowhere and done simply by two shithead kids in a car throwing bricks. They were calling her names and one brick took half her skull off. She was 14! Clay gets home to find his son zombified but not attacking him and everyone else fucking dies! This book was no bullshit
The teacher's death wasn't suicide. The hive mind forced him to shove a pencil in his eye. Retaliation for killing the zombies.
The Hay-Day of Stephan King was from "The Bachman Books" (a collection of short stories that included the "Running Man") to "The Dark Tower" series. Even when he was a coke addict (self admitted) writing "The Tommy Knockers" he still had insperation. The writers cut of "The Stand" and the full version of "It", and the "Dark Tower" trilogy are stories I still find myself thinking about after almost 20 years......

I hated the ending of the novel and I hate the movie ending even more.
How does it end
the novel ends by Clay arriving home to his kid who is totally zombified, but not dangerous. Just braindead pretty much.

So why didn't Clay just write an ending like, "The night traveler appeared in front of me while I was peeing but when he saw my huge monster 🐓 he realized how beta as funk he was. He took out a special night traveler gun and blew his brains out ...but not before bowing down to my huge manly 🐓. The end."

They technically by the end as the explosion does destroy the big group but seemingly something else infected the signal and made them mindless again, including his son so he uses the cell phone on him one more time, ambiguous end if the call fixed him or not
More is on the journey around and seeing the mind messed people habits and changes
