    I just simply can't stop wondering, how on Earth Efren even has knowledge of so intricate details of physics behind the ball movements. He simply SEES into the future and knows how will the ball react and behave when hit at a certain speed and where it will end up. Even then he doesn't THINK, he needs no time, he just calls it, aims and boom. Done. He just SEES the shot. Never ever going to understand how he does that. I mean, after all the research people do, after engineering, mathematical calculations, physics, slow motion analysis and even after all that to they can't for sure know what happens before it's played. They simply can't SEE what the outcome will be, no matter how good they are at the table. They can't see a shot in advance, yes you can replicate a shot. Even I can after a certain amount of shots. But only AFTER Efren has done it, and you know it to be possible. But for Efren it's somehow different. He knows it can be done without thinking. He knows the outcome, without trying multiple times. The guy will never stop to amaze me.

Mind you I've been playing for 30+ years already lol. Efren is simply the best when it comes to mechanics, consistency and being humble. I thoroughly enjoyed every time he beat Strickland. Efren is incredible generous too with supporting his entire family with his winnings and loves the simple life like playing cards. It's a pleasure to watch him play even if it's in his home country in the Philippines. You'll see him play local guys in flip flops, shorts and a tee-shirt because he's THAT genuine.

    1. Great video, love that people on RUclips do this type of thing, and that at least one has the quality that you have!
    2. On the spin of the 10 ball. The spin the cue ball gives it COULD be a factor, however I think it is much more likely that the spin that reversed the bank on the 10 is imparted by the first rail it comes into contact with. If you hit a rail at an angle it imparts spin on a ball as if it drags along it, that’s why you can hit a cue ball with no English along a long rail, and it shoots off like it has tons of side when it hits the short.
    I feel like that’s a much more likely scenario to be why this shot happens than the minuscule spin the cue ball gives it.
    Thoughts? (From anyone who’s read)

    Crazy shot. Efren Reyes is one of the two best shots I ever saw, but it's hard to believe he actually called that shot in a tournament game.

  • @tomlu709
    @tomlu709 5 лет назад +4

    This is part of "cut induced throw". The cue ball grabs the object ball for a moment and throws it in the opposite direction of the cut, and as part of that it skids along the surface and imparts spin on the ball. This is why it's a bit easier to make severe cuts using outside English as the throw from the English counteracts the cut induced throw.

      Interesting! I've always used inside English for long, thin cuts, because I like to aim a bit thick and count on squirt to correct the line. I'll have to try this!

    • @DeepFriedOreoOffline
      @DeepFriedOreoOffline 5 лет назад

      Well, I mean depending on your definition I would say he is already well past being an "average" pool player.
      In my opinion, an "average" pool player is someone who plays pool as part of a social experience; Going out with some friends, probably watches videos like this in their spare time thinking about how they will approach the table next. An average player knows how to put spin on a ball, and if they're intelligent by nature they understand the basic physics behind the ball's momentum and how to hit a good shot.
      I would reckon that he sees himself as an average pool player given the level of advancement there is in competitive pool. However, I would say to be an average pool player you need to be within the low 50% or less, skill wise. I would be blown away if I walked into a pool hall and found that 1 in every 2 people there could pull off these shots in such low attempts.
      I am only a sub par pool player myself, but this guy is better than average for sure.

  • @rocketceo
    @rocketceo 5 лет назад

    Ok, something crucial no one else has mentioned -- cupping. Spin is not only not necessary to make this shot but is actually a disadvantage! Yes, we all understand that spin helps the ball reverse off a cushion, but the reversing action that makes this shot is PRINCIPALLY because when a ball hits a cushion at an angle (at more than slow speed), the cushion sort of 'cups' it, in a curved arc that does not point at the exact mirror angle, but rather at a much shorter angle. To picture this, make a fist and push it several inches into a pillow at a 30 degree angle. You will see that the pillow conforms around your hand, and is facing back towards your hand, and not on the angle of reflection. This cupping action also helps explain why the spin reverses.
    For decades I always shot this 3-rail cross bank to the side with inside english, until a top player and friend advised "no spin." That didn't make sense to me, but I tried it, and voila!, instead of becoming a 50-50 shot it became a 90% make cross-side. Why? The english requires a squirt adjustment, which can be difficult at higher speeds. If you look back at your first several attempts, you were missing them because the squirt threw the cue ball too far to the right.
    Without the squirt adjustment, once experience teaches you where to hit the first rail, the shot is almost a straight-in, and becomes close to a hanger. So, definitely NO ENGLISH (unless the angle is so extreme that you need both the 'cupping' and the 'spin' to reverse even more). Note that this shot is similar to the long rail bank where the object ball is a half inch from the rail -- no english makes the shot much simpler (if the cue ball is close, at just a slight angle, and hit with stun).

    Ever throw a superball under a table? It hits floor, underside of table, floor and back out to you. This appears to be the exact same action. Each time the ball hits a rail, the spin reverses. I'm going to try this at the hall tomorrow. Thanks for posting.

    Really interesting to see these videos. While I'm certainly not what people would consider a pro, I'm not average either.
    Watching your videos brought so much nostalgia and reminded me why I feel in love with billiards. So much thought process and science goes into these shots and it's very educational when you break them down. Your videos want to make me dust off my cue and sign up for tournaments again. But first, I need to practice.
    The reason I stopped was cause college and having a job left me with no spare time.

    That is called angle convergence and it is basic geometry. We've all learned that in school. Even if you shoot the Q ball alone, the same will happen. It has NOTHING to do with the spin.
    Great shot from The Magician though.

    • @ronhawes6976
      @ronhawes6976 5 лет назад

      I have to disagree. You should repeatedly try the 3 rails in the side shot. This is a a shot that any novice can do within twenty attempts. If you don't put the spin on the cue-ball, you won't make the shot. This is my favorite video in this series so far!

  • @arthurgoerner488
    @arthurgoerner488 5 лет назад +1

    Simon hit on it. It's the rails. The angle will decrease after hitting a rail. The harder you hit a ball, the more it digs into the rail, the narrower the angle the ball will rebound at. The rail will impart, deaden, or reverse spin on the ball, depending upon the angle, speed, and direction of spin on the ball in relation to the rail. Better than average pool players are well aware of this, and use it just about every bank shot. Simple.
