Great video! I've had my Spur X01 for 1.5 yrs and I agree 100% with your assessment. The Spur climbs great due to its light weight but lacks in the descends over rough terrain. That said, I've tried the latest Rascal, Stumpy, Ripley, and Tallboy looking for that added descending capability but found myself going back to the Spur. In fact, I swapped the stock wheelset for a set of roval control sl and dropped another 1.5lbs from stock weight. The Spurs makes a 30 mile/4k ft climb a breeze and for descends...pick your line wisely:)
@@dialedmtb ah yes, the RME! I took a hard look at the C70 spec model as it was comparable in price to the Spur X01 back then. Never rode it but based on reviews and geo specs, looks ideal. Great time to be a mt biker with so many options but sadly bikes are approaching used car price levels… stop it!
"For me it wasn't even planned extra miles, I was just having a blast!" - Yup, this is what I say to my wife when that 1 hour after work rides turns into a 3 hour epic. An XC / trail bike that's super fun to munch miles on and have a hoot on the way down. I'll definitely be hanging onto mine for a good few years but I can see why others might want to trade theirs in for something burlier with a tad more travel.
@@dialedmtb Yeah there's a fine line between these so-called "downcountry" bikes and short travel trail bikes (Tallboy, Stumpy, Giant Trance 29 etc). Hard to tell where one category ends and the other starts but I'd definitely say you nailed it by pointing out the Spur is more XC than trail.
I just picked up a Spur a few days ago. They increased the price by $700 to $7200 for this build. I was lucky and got the previous price. I'm in Colorado and coming from a specialized epic that I've raced quite a bit. I agree with your review, I like the bike so far as I wanted a good climber and a little more comfortable ride in the foothills.
Yeah I just noticed they raised the price today! I shot this video a few weeks ago before the price change. but that is awesome, glad you were able to get one Also thank you for the comment and feedback!
@@tripleb5232 I did consider the EVO. I've owned mostly specialized bikes in the past - so the Evo was one of the first bikes I considered. I'm keeping my current epic for some XC, so I really wanted more of a trail bike and felt like the Spurs suspension was slightly better than the Evo with a little more travel. Both the Epic Evo and Spur are awesome bikes though and have similar geometry
I watched your Ripmo reviews and it seems that it fits your style better. It can climb well for a trail bike and bomb the descents. It’s crazy to see how wide open your trails are. I’m in the PNW. Have you ridden the Mojo?
Yeah the Ripmo is awesome! I just got the new Hightower V3 though and the first ride review will come out tomorrow! But yeah I used to live in the Seattle area, actually headed back there tomorrow for a week and will be riding all over there, pretty stoked! But no I have not ridden the Mojo. I’m not a huge 27.5 fan honestly.
I switch back and forth between a SID and a Pike on my Spur. I called Transition before I bought the Pike and they had no issue with it. In fact, it sounds like they get the question regularly.
So I heard about the SID bushing problem but I heard about that mostly when the fork was brand new (within the 1st year of it being out) but I didn’t have any problems and I have had since buddies with it recently as well with no issues (all within getting the fork in the last 6 months)
I would like to see a bike like the 120mm rear travel Spur come with a 140mm Fox 36 or Pike and more progressive geo--77* STA and 64* HTA. Something that is light and really climbs well but still has the geo and fork to descend well. The mechanic at my local shop here in Durango rides a 120mm rear travel Trek Top Fuel with a 140mm Fox 36 which slackened the stock 66* HTA to 65*.
Definitely would be cool to see but for a bike like this I could see it dipping maybe into a 64.8-65.0 range for HTA but that would be super slack for a bike like this. I do think this specific bike at 120 in the front would benefit from a .5-.7 degree slacker HTA though. But with that some people would not even notice that difference. I think they will come out with a new Smuggler and I think the HTA will be in between 64.6-65.2 though! That’s just my guess. If I had to pick 1 number to guess it would be 64.8. haha
@@dialedmtb I'm 5'9" and I favor Trailbikes (Downcountry to All-Mountain) that have an ~1235mm wheelbase no matter the travel. Unfortunately, 5"9" is usually right in between size medium and size large. So, I either need a very slack size medium or a slightly less slack size large. I'll take what ever gives me the ~1235mm wheelbase.
I’d say most smaller travel Trail bikes you’d be a size large in. but anything 130mm of travel or more now I think you’re almost going to be in the middle of. Mediums will be 1210-1230 and larges will be 1240-1265
I'm debating a Spur, I'm in an area with mostly flat trails or short punchy climbs and rolling hills. I travel to steeper terrain, but it's mostly in flatter terrain. I want something fast for flat, twisty, rooty terrain basically. It's between this and the Tallboy, so I"m assuming the TB will descend much better, but the Spur will be faster.
Like you said, the TB will definetely descend better, it will climb a little slower but will be more comfortable and faster on the descents. The Spur is more twitchy feeling but for you local terrain would probably be better. When you travel the TB would be better for sure.
Does it pedal considerably better than the Tallboy or sb115 or the Stumpy pro? You can build a new Stumpy to 26 pounds and it’s a one 3140 bike so I wonder if that would be the better choice
It climbs better then the stumpy for sure, the stumpy and the Tallboy climb pretty similarly, but I think a new Tallboy will be coming out in a month or two. It’s been a while since I rode the SB115 but I think that bike is too out of date to spend that much money on currently, just my opinion though. If you’re looking for a bike to be good at climbing but just as good or better at descending then get the stumpy or the Tallboy out of those 4 bikes.
Great review! I just wonder if Transition will release any change soon, like giving 130mm up front maybe will compete with another short trail on descends, or as you said new smuggler soon. Not sure if new tallboy also its coming, if will add something like new santa cruz swat box will be also good choice. Finally yeti..not sure when will change the actual sb 115..sound they could improve or add some rear travel.. What other bike will be more capable on descends but still maintain the low weight of the spur? Not easy to find Cheers
I don’t think they will do a 130 for the front of this bike but like I said, probably a new bike with a little more travel. But from what I’ve heard a new Tallboy should be out soon! But yeah the SB115 is too far out of date and needs a redo for sure! I would guess the Rocky Mountain Element would be just as good as a climber as the Spur but descend better. then the Trek Top Fuel probably climbs close but yet might descend a little better, the the Ibis Ripley also, then the Scott Spark I rode that and it climbs super well and descends better then the Spur for sure.
@@dialedmtb thanks for all of your suggestions! Sadly rocky mountain here en Spain no dealer.. About tallboy vs Fuel vs Spark not sure what will be more easy around 27lbs, because on the ratio climbing platform and efficiency in a long day ride weight can be important. Thanks again for your reviews
