Hi Evan, What would be the best way to contact you, I started a mental health podcast at the beginning of lockdown and we've had slight success including a large TikTokker, Stunt performer etc etc and I would really love if you could maybe be involved as a guest. Thanks
When I went through UK school, examinations only made up 50% of the course, with 50% being essays. Moreover, it'd be split into 1 exam per semester, so you'd have already completed 50% of your examinations by the end of your first year. Now under the Tories, you have ALL the exams at he end of the 2-3 year course and essays are nearly non-existant.
MichaelSucksAtFootball I don’t know if there is an equivalent but GCSEs are the exams that we take at the end of year 11 (which I think is your grade 10) / the exams before A levels Let me know if that makes sense
Every year we have at least 2 months of this heat, yet everyone else seems to forget this. Yes, this has been the hottest week, but it's not been the first week we've needed to use fans this year!
@Jessica Stein As someone with a chronic illness, it is not about being hot, but being so hot it messes with your sleep, rest, and energy use, meaning life is even harder than it already is for disabled people.
My a levels are terrible right now. I was given two U's, a C, and a F. This is the first time I've ever gotten U's in my entire life, I'm a average B-C student. This year has honestly been a clusterfuck. Edit: So for clarification I'm in Wales. The situation is apparently worse than everyone else in the UK and I have no idea how the appeal process is working but for everyone concerned. Yes, I will appeal, I don't really have a choice😕. These grades were worse than my AS and GCSEs. My future kind of hangs on it🙃.
My bro was predicted 9s and distinction stars... we go to public school and apparently the posh twats are getting given better grades just for being in private school. They're bashing his grades just because we're poor but he works bloody hard and I'm so angry at Ofsted.
The exams were tipped based on your schools results normally are, basically meaning if you come from a poorer area you’re results were worse , just flat out classism
Exactly, and my brother was predicted 9s and distinction stars... we're from Norfolk, notoriously bad education system. My brother works bloody hard and I hate the classism in this country...
Tris Sharp one of my friends has a single mum so has been downgraded purely based on the fact that they live in a flat, even though she’s constantly been an A-A* student throughout secondary school and college. She got given two Cs and a B. It’s absolute bullshit
I understand that it isn’t the best system, but isn’t it logical to think that schools which performed well in the last few years are more likely to perform well now, and schools which less well are more likely to do the same this year?
@@lucar6897 Not really. In my old highschool in Norfolk the grades fluctuated continuously so ther was no was to predict it. For my grades if you went by the last years grades i would have failed everything but if it was the year before that i would have been marked higher. It also fails to take in to account the attiude of the students cause the wildly affect the grades.
Yo, child of a physics teacher here. If you want a breakdown: - Private schools vs. Public schools The way the algorithm determined who was downgraded depended partly on class size. Part of the reason private schools have not been as affected is because they often technically have smaller classes, because they tend to have more teachers per subject. For more info look up educational cohorts vs. groups. My dad had a class of 15, a cut off point, and it meant that over half of the kids got downgraded. - Predicted grades Sorry but these aren't as relevant as you'd think. Predicted grades are almost always inflated from what the teachers actually think you'll get. They are trying to help your university course applications etc. and some are forced to inflate by school management so they don't piss off the parents. It is entirely possible you weren't awarded all your predicted grades - The grade stipulations Teachers were made to rank each grade group, so everyone who got e.g. an A grade was ranked least to most likely. The algorithm attacked whole classes and basically pushed everyone down, meaning those at the bottom of the ranking went down a grade. If say, you were the only one awarded a B in your class, you would have been pushed down to a C or lower, regardless of how sure the teacher was. - Awarding grades My Dad agonised over this. He knew what students were capable of, and also knew how the government might downgrade if there was major grade inflation. Results would have been compared to previous year's results on a rolling average, so he calculated the no. of grades in the past three years, but he also gave what he thought students deserved. It is likely that in most cases, teachers awarded what you would have got, because they know you well. The inflation however was probably a result of most teachers picking the higher option in cases where you could go either way. - The stupid algorithm The algorithm didn't look at rolling averages. The maths didn't make sense. Some students had every single grade downgraded because they were just lower in all the rankings - basically being punished for being pretty good at everything and spreading their attention evenly/sensibly. The algorithm was completely stupid and my Dad's been mad for days. Lastly, well done. Well done for fighting against this and winning. You completely deserved the higher grades your teachers awarded you, and I'm glad they've reversed this absolute joke of an outcome. But if you are still disappointed, please don't think your grades define your life forever. They won't. You might have set backs now, but you'll be ok, and it might bring you to opportunities you never considered before, but are actually a great fit for you. Good luck with everything!
I'm from the North of ireland i know two girls who are friends and got almost exactly the same grades throughout all of secondary school. (All good grades btw). On Thursday one of them got A*AB and the other got BBC. Guess which one came from a poorer background... the system is quite clearly biased against those from worse off backgrounds even though they have had to do so much more to keep those grades as high as they are and then they're stripped away with the click of some tory's fingers.
From here too! I'm literally one of the top students in my year and have been dropped from A*BB to ACD (the only reason I even got an A was because of how coursework heavy art is). The teachers were as shocked as I was. Comprehensive school in a working class area we never stood a chance. I'm praying that England sort things out because if they do something about it over there then Peter Weir and the DUP will follow suit so they can keep brown nosing their cash machine. Absolutely livid, we've all been fucked over.
@@virtualarmageddon6232 I wouldnt be surprised if England didn't do much if anything because they want to try and keep the poorer people out of the more prestigious places so could you imagine them giving the hard workers the grades they deserve and then Oxford and Cambridge being flooded with working class scum.
I’m Irish but I’ve a friend from Northern Ireland (RBAI). He was predicting BBB he got CCC. He got the highest grades in two of those classes. At least it’s kinda changed now but idk if it’s too late to be accepted into queens which is what he wanted
There is a repport from a group of the best statisticians about this. They came to the result that it had given the correct grade in about 50% of the cases (from 65% down to 25% depending on subject). And the grading had generally been downgrades, except for students from privat schools that in general had been up graded. Strange right?
@@GreenLarsen As someone who goes to a private school and got lower grades than I should've, I think this is complete misinformation. To say as an average private schools benefit from this more than state schools would be correct but I do not know a single student whose result was upgraded from their CAG
I have to disagree with you about the grading where if the teacher doesn’t like you... I have seen so much where US school system has all these extra credit or takes marks off because they don’t like you... in the UK most of the time that doesn’t happen , especially in primary and secondary school. University differs a little. But they wouldn’t give you a different grade because of personal difference, if they did they shouldn’t be teaching
I've never seen teachers give extra credit or take marks off for no concrete reason, at least in my school, but it might vary. I've had teachers who were nicer to students they liked, but it never affected their grades. If a teacher graded a student based on personal preference, I would have them fired.
@@ava_lavender honestly I think the issue is that in the UK having someone mark the test that knows who you are, just seems like an unecessary risk to allow any bias into the system. Both positive for the school (make the school look better) and negative for the student. So at almost all levels any official tests are marked by teachers from other schools. I think the USA does something similar for the SATs but if I understand correctly a students High School Diploma is based on grades from their teachers at the school.
@@ShasLaMontyr I'm not from the UK, so I'm not sure about their system. The SAT is graded by a computer because it's multiple choice and the essay is graded anonymously by three different adjudicators. Whether a student graduates or not is solely based on whether or not you passed all the required classes (four years of math, three years of history, three years of a language, etc.)
Im from NI and my French teacher in secondary school hated me for literally no reason. She would mark me so much more harshly when compared to the other students in my class and she eventually just bullied me out of school and the school did nothing :) I didnt even get to do my as levels let alone a levels. :) :)
The official exams (apart from this year) are sent off to be marked by teachers up and down the country who are trained to do so, they have an official mark scheme they have to follow. (Apart from university)
The grades are not based on us at all appart from the ranking of best student to worst in each class, they just applied the grades from the past two years to us based on whose the best and who’s the worst. The grades don’t reflect our performance at all
A lot of teachers in the UK make a point out of not giving A*s/top marks. Even if you can't do any better, they'll mark you down for the sake of being tough.
Im from Finland but had a British teacher in high school in Economics. He once graded my essay full marks, until he handed it out, looked at it for a second and went back to his desk to remove a few points because "Nobody is perfect and you can't get better if you get full marks now". ARGH!
I think normally teachers in the US do not do this but I had a horrible bio teacher in 10th grade that gave us worse grades on a project after we did every single thing on the rubric but she said we didn’t do a certain thing and so we didn’t do our best even though she NEVER told us to do that certain thing.
I feel so sorry for the A Level and GCSE's students this year. The algorithm is so flawed and it didn't help that they were studying the new linear format. If this pandemic had happened 3/4 years ago, teens would have already sat a handful of exams at the end of Year 10/12 and the January before the lockdown period. Meaning that the algorithm would've had a proper informative basis of what the grades would have most likely been for each individual. This was one of the reasons why I was so annoyed when Gove changed the qualification structure from modular to linear. No wonder kids have panic attacks and anxiety about exams. 😒
Yeah, still having AS would probably have helped as you can't argue that the teachers are marking someone up if they got a good grade in the previous year.
@@kierenevans2521 however saying that, resitting AS exams are SUPER common because it is a big jump between GCSE and A Level. I know people last year that got Es in exams, resat and got Bs. I had exams to resit this year (they weren't super low but I knew I could do better) mostly due to bullying in my AS year. The exam boards do not take into account people resitting exams. Even with good AS results you got screwed if you were from a comprehensive school and from a workimg class area, had friends get As last year yet somehow be given Ds this year because the exam boards needed to bring down the curve 😒 Fuck the tories, fuck CCEA/OFQUAL and fuck Peter Weir.

I got downgraded (I was a straight A* student) and I'm not happy, but luckily it didn't affect me getting into my uni. However, I have so many friends who have had their future destroyed because they were downgraded from As to Ds.
That’s awful. I’m from Northern Ireland and people were downgrading here too. I got AS results and I was upset being downgraded from a low A to C in my art but I got two A’s in my other subjects purely because my teachers don’t give much homework. My friend went from AAB to CDE. This is a mess

I feel like a bit of an asshole for saying this because I'm not trying to say that year 11s and 13s' experiences aren't important. But tbh year 12s and year 10s have been forgotten in this pandemic. We haven't had adequate teaching in order to sit our life changing exams next year. And the government has said nothing about it or trying to fix it
Yess i totally get that even though I’m in yr 9 going into year 10 we’re meant to be taking our English lit this year and we have missed half a year of teaching basically and I’m some ways we are worse off than the ppl this yr cause it won’t be taken into account that we missed half a year old school and we will probably get worse grades as well than if we had had this yr of teaching!
justabitofamug yeah, as a year 13, we’ve been completely fucked over. It’s not too bad for me as someone taking a BTEC at a decent college, but all my friends at the other college doing a-levels have just been completely left to teach the whole course to themselves. Don’t know whether that’s just the college or not tho, personally my college did online lessons with our teachers but the other college gave them nothing
I totally agree! I’m going into y11 and we had so much work and it’s really hard to get motivated. We have summer work as well. Some people haven’t done much work, so when we go back everyone will be at different levels.
True. I really feel sad for the year 13s and year 11s (Y13s more so), but us year 10 and 12s are kinda forgotten. For me my school just expects everyone to just do the work and be perfectly fine and not struggle at all. It's real dumb, my hope is almost everyone is actually struggling too so the grade boundaries aren't so high, so as to give us an actual chance.
i get you! as a year 13 my a levels were obvs lower than i expected - CCD when i was predicted a BBC, but i still got into the uni i wanted, whereas my sister in year 12 has been sent a ridiculous amount of work for her a levels and they expected her to be working 10+ hours a day during term time, and she is still doing optional school work now to try to learn all the content herself :/
I got 2 As and a D for my advanced highers in scotland this year, I’m in the bottom 20% most deprived area and go to a low ranking school. I’ve now found out I actually was meant to get 2 As and a B, so I was marked down a level for my area and another for my school. Fucked up, glad it’s being rectified now
My friend got marked down from a B to a C in Higher Maths. Our school isn't the poorest in the world, but a lot of the catchment area is definitely deprived. Eighteen people got marked down from their predicted A grades in Higher Chemistry, with only about 45 people sitting it in total! Glad they've backtracked on it now(in Scotland at least), but it still caused stress for so many people :(
When I was predicted an A* in geography, got an A* in the mocks and was first in the 'ranking'.... and I ended up with a B. I'm grateful I got into my first choice university, but I know so many people who got so screwed over.
The A-level grades have been handled very sloppily, I hope the uproar this has caused triggers something to be done about this. On a similar note, the Open University did pretty much the same thing for a lot of their students and the response was the same, I've seen a petition floating around too. It's beyond me how this method of grade assignment was deemed acceptable.
Hi Evan (and everyone)! What with GCSE results day on Thursday I actually can’t bring myself to watch this yet, I fundamentally too angry. But I will. Good luck everyone on Thursday and hopefully this absolute bullshit will soon be sorted out!
Another thing teachers do is if you do very well (for example getting a 9 which is the best grade you can get for GCSE's or an 8 which is essentially the same thing) they mark you down to "motivate" you to get better grades which will screw a lot of students this year
This is another amazing video which has brought me happiness when I’ve been feeling so low! I just want to say thank you for addressing the A-levels! My A-level experience has been and continues to be such a rollercoaster! This lovely corner of the Internet, please help us show support for a more just system to help my friends and fellow students! xx
Nervous and I'm hoping they will not be as terrible as the a-level ones. Also we have no control over the grades we get given so I can't feel that excited as it is not down to me.
Apparently they're giving posh twats in private schools better grades because money... my brother, they're bashing his grades and he was predicted 9s and distinction stars, he works bloody hard.
crystal kirlia the private schools just upgraded all their students grades higher than what they actually thought whereas most public schools were honest
Holly Hales yeah I totally get that. I feel like if I do great I won’t get a sense of achievement, and if I do bad I won’t feel responsibility, because these grades are given to me and not a reflection of my actual ability
It seems like the downgrading is completely random as to who it effects as well. I got an A in my EPQ but my friend who goes to my school and put just as much work in got a D. Make it make sense, tories
I really haven't seen any RUclipsr that really put this much effort into their video. And by effort I mean the editing, and the asking for feedback which fyi mine is always it's good 😊👍 because sometimes I can't really tell the difference 😂
I saw you in London a few years ago Evan- I was on a college trip so couldn’t really stop, and you were running somewhere and looked busy so I didn’t want to interrupt you, but it was really cool seeing you! And I really appreciated the lovely reply to my tweet about it later that night. People who forget that people they know from online are still real humans too baffle me
have you ever thought about moving to Manchester? It's just as dynamic as London, with arguably more culture, nicer people and my 2 bedroom apartment rent in the city centre is £600
I was schooled in England and now I'm in college in California. I would never go back to the UK system, it is far too limiting and doesn't give people a chance if they arent good test takers.
That is a valid thing. I was in school a decade ago, done decent in classes then super stressed and anxious in exams which meant I had to regularly resit them. The environment wasn't great but teachers refused to belive it was because I hated tests. Got semi decent grades eventually but if it had been decided on class grades I would have done so much better.
Personally I really like tests and would far prefer them over the other systems I know of, but I do also know a person who gets heaps of anxiety and almost faints before exams, so I would really wish if students could choose at the start of the course if it's coursework based, exam based or maybe even mix, it would just make it so much better for everyone.
Definitely agree. Even Ireland is a lot more forgiving. As long as you have a science subject, Honours Maths, English and Irish and a foreign language you have a chance to get accepted into pretty much every college course in the country (you do 7-8 subjects). You're not as screwed here if you don't really know what to do. Plus there's TY, which is a work experience and practical year that you can take to learn real world skills. Also only one exam matters in Ireland compared to two in England and it's not as hard nor as stressful as the English equivalents. It seems easier to get into college here than in England too (even England's mid-tier unis are tougher).
One school had 53% (the head was on five live) of their alevel results downgraded. They came from a poorer area. The alevels have been effed up and so some peoples Uni offers have been rejected. Its makes me worried for my results on Thursday
They should take your final Mock results and increase them based on the improvement from the last mock, and if the improvement is not large bump up the grade by 1 at least because that's the minimum a student would go up
The A-Levels fiasco actually makes me scream with anger. I feel so bad for those "doing" them this year. I'm doing them next year. Am terrified. Love to all, hope you're grades get U-turned by the government.
0:50 it is true that 40% of a-level students this year got lower than what their teachers submitted to the exam boards, but the way the exam boards decided how to allocate grades was based on what each specific school got last year. That means that teachers submitted scores which were higher than the average score of their school last year, and therefore had their grades lowered. Though this method of grading students clearly isn’t ideal, especially if you feel like you should have scored higher than last year’s students, but it really is the best way for the exam boards to allocate grades fairly without inflating average scores because teachers predict unrealistically high grades for their students
Im not from the uk but I think this is not ideal at all, by using that method they r basically stating that ur grades doesnt matter bc of the school you come from, for instance if u come from a poor area is most likely that your school had lower grades last year than some school from a wealthy area (or at least from where I am education is correlated to $$) so even tho u r a brilliant student all the years that you spent learning means nothing and are thrown down the wc jusr bc you have the misfortune of being poor. It doesnt seems fair to me but perhaps there is something I dont know abt ur ed system. 😓 Just for referece we have system that rewards u if ur marks are above the avarege of ur school, regardless of ur area, by giving you "extra" points that are added to your admision exam, thus allowing students from poorer schools who put effort to be able to enter uni even if their schools arent cosindered "the best of the best". Also why ur goverment/ the board is so untrusting of the teachers? Have they done somenthing that suggest that they will actually upload higher marks than the reals ones?
Oh gosh I was waiting for someone to talk about the A level thing, cause I'm American and I had no idea what was going on but saw so many people talking about it on Twitter
as a tl;dr - A level students this year did not take their final exams (ie, what most of the grade - or even 100% of it in some cases - is based upon), so originally they were supposed to get their predicted grades (predicted by their teachers). However, the government were worried that teachers would try to make themselves look better by giving everybody A*s (UK equivalent to an A+, also notoriously difficult to get), so to negate this they put everybody through an algorithm which gave out grades not based upon their predicted grades but also their school's track record and economic area. So basically, anybody from a poorer area got given like... 2-3 grades below what they were meant to get. It's blatant classism - had all my grades been bumped down by two (which they would have done, based on the area I went to school in) I wouldn't have even gotten into university. Oh also, to appeal their grade, it's £100 a pop! So, presuming you sit the 3-4 A Levels that everybody does, that's £300-400 just to see if they'll give you the grade you deserved.
@@jimmyrobertson4264 oh no, that sounds so awful! Also like, how do they even let that happen?? If anything I would of assumed it was based on a student's grades in general?
@@polliec8443 someone else responded :) but I guess my only question is how come they did it based on schools and not a student's individual like grades?
@@Noshbedumb It was supposed to be based on the predicted grades, however instead teachers have had to rank students from best to worst in the class, and then the grades are given based on essentially the economic area of the school. it happens because the tories (or the conservatives - the party in power right now) hate poor people honestly. it's a right shit show and I hope the people who have taken their A Levels this year really make a stink out of it because I'm sure as hell going to continue to make a stink out of it until they have justice.

If you’re working class, put all your blood, sweat and tears into doing the best you can to get yourself into college and/or uni then you’re bottom of the pile and crapped on. The algorithm that’s been used this year is take the predicted scores, put them in order and give you the corresponding score from last year’s class. So if you have the best predicted score in your class you get the best score from last year’s class.

Why do so many people think this is the whole uk???? Scotland already got our results and it was just as bad and no one gave a shit. At least the SQA is fixed it tho.....
I’ve only just discovered this channel, I’m only 6 minutes in and I’m laughing so much. What you’re saying is so true! 😹Especially about the annual, week long period of scorching heat! I don’t know what it’s like to live in London and save for a house, I think it would be more possible if you moved out of London, to somewhere like Kent and commuted. Even if it’s a small place, you’d be on the property ladder, I suppose 🤷🏾♀️. If you were willing to completely uproot then the cost of living is definitely much cheaper, up North or South West. I’m sure you know all this but it’s just some thoughts from a new subscriber 😄
As someone who has survived the British education system i don’t things it’s that bad. I was glad actually that I wasn’t American when I saw Evans videos on the US schools because the way they work does just not appeal to me. Although I’ve no doubt it’s as much about bias given that neither myself or Evan has truly experienced the other system. Also you don’t have to do A levels you can go to sixth form college and do a vocational course with no exams just coursework assessments (which I prefer over exams) and then go to university which is what I did.
Currently, as an American living in the US, not only can I not move out of the country, but I can also travel only to a select few foreign countries at the moment due to the pandemic not being controlled in the US (which I completely understand). Sadly, most of my fellow Americans are completely unaware of this and live their lives as if there are no other countries on Earth.
Pretty sure that Land would be pretty cheap in North Korea Evan, You were talking about wanting to go to a place with cheaper housing etc, and Kimmy himself invited you to North Korea, so you are bound to get a bit of a discount!
I very rarely allow private ownership of property but I can make an exception for Evan. He can have a property free of charge and I am willing to grant him North Korean citizenship free of fees and questions.
@@lukeh5518 thats a very generous offer of you to make! I'm sure such policies of brining in foreigners to work and use your currency will strengthen North Korea to a global superpower!
Sheffield would be a good shout for you Evan. 2 hour train ride gets you back to London (faster when HS2 gets done) but much cheaper in terms of prices. You also have a lot of RUclips friends who came from there who can help you out no end.
What upsets me is that in 2020 the clear systematic bias between classes is still so clear in the UK. My grades were downgraded simply because I went to a disadvantaged school. I worked so hard to get A*. In sociology every exam I sat I got A* same with my class work so please tell me how there algorithm can give me an A when I’ve never ever got one of those in my life. And it’s simply because of where I live. I’m so upset with how the gov. Have treated us everyone is so demoralised and hurt it seems like a waste of 2 years of hard work when we had no opportunity to succeed because of my postcode. As a sociology student you read about how the system disadvantages the working class but never thought in this day and age they would so blatantly disadvantage a whole generation. Capitalism at its finest.
I agree its totally unfair having all assessment based on a few exams (especially with what's happened with them this year) but I'd definitely say there's no "marking down because the teacher doesn't like you" here. Like all of our formal exams are externally and anonymously graded by random examiners, and even at uni you submit all your coursework anonymously. From what I know about America it seems to be a lot more influenced by the individual teachers if they want to
@@confusedpanda2 ah, but friend, I'm a US college student and taking a semester off because, even though I've only studied a year, I'm 10K in debt! Both our school systems have flaws, unfortunately :((
My experience as an A level student: I was predicted AAB by my teachers and given BBU from the algorithm. I’ve never graded below a C in any piece of assessed work in my entire school life from Year 2 SATs when I was like 6 to now, and I’ve certainly never got a U and literally failed. Not sure how an algorithm can justify taking me down FIVE GRADES.
I had a law exam where my teacher said it was “almost perfect, just missing one sentence in this paragraph” and because of that I lost 20% of the marks on the paper???
The main problem with the current A levels is that not only did it lower scores it did it by class so a rich person who went to a school that is expensive and only accepts the best wouldn’t have lowered grades but a poor person who went to a bad school would have their score lowered
I feel like, someone already said this but, I’m English and obviously went to English school, and so I have to disagree with how you said teachers mark by letting their personal views get in the way. I fell like in the UK the school marking system and how teachers have to asses work is much tighter than the US. The only time I’ve seen people be marked on more personal levels is in PE. PE teachers give you either B,C etc. just to be tough and keep up the “you must be so strong to get a good grade in big boy PE”. Also in my schools marking system there is a 1-4 grading system for the students attitude.

Which means the UK system is harder and the students better educated than their American counterparts, eh Evan?
good luck everyone for GCSE results on Thursday!!

Thanks! I’m so scared, at my school the A-levels last week were downgraded 40%... screwed lol sucks they also gave it worse to poorer schools!!!
Evan complained about the one hot week of the year - he is clearly a brit now lol
He has been absorbed into the blob of British culture
Every week, in every way, he is getting better and better!
Every year we have at least 2 months of this heat, yet everyone else seems to forget this. Yes, this has been the hottest week, but it's not been the first week we've needed to use fans this year!
He may as well be officially a brit now
@Jessica Stein As someone with a chronic illness, it is not about being hot, but being so hot it messes with your sleep, rest, and energy use, meaning life is even harder than it already is for disabled people.
My bro was predicted 9s and distinction stars... we go to public school and apparently the posh twats are getting given better grades just for being in private school. They're bashing his grades just because we're poor but he works bloody hard and I'm so angry at Ofsted.
crystal kirlia OFQUAL...but it actually is bullshit!
dam sorry to hear that
The exams were tipped based on your schools results normally are, basically meaning if you come from a poorer area you’re results were worse , just flat out classism
Exactly, and my brother was predicted 9s and distinction stars... we're from Norfolk, notoriously bad education system. My brother works bloody hard and I hate the classism in this country...
They were also weighted based on your home postcode, so if you live in a poorer area you're pretty much screwed regardless of where you go to school
If you want a breakdown:
- Private schools vs. Public schools
The way the algorithm determined who was downgraded depended partly on class size. Part of the reason private schools have not been as affected is because they often technically have smaller classes, because they tend to have more teachers per subject. For more info look up educational cohorts vs. groups. My dad had a class of 15, a cut off point, and it meant that over half of the kids got downgraded.
- Predicted grades
Sorry but these aren't as relevant as you'd think. Predicted grades are almost always inflated from what the teachers actually think you'll get. They are trying to help your university course applications etc. and some are forced to inflate by school management so they don't piss off the parents. It is entirely possible you weren't awarded all your predicted grades
- The grade stipulations
Teachers were made to rank each grade group, so everyone who got e.g. an A grade was ranked least to most likely. The algorithm attacked whole classes and basically pushed everyone down, meaning those at the bottom of the ranking went down a grade. If say, you were the only one awarded a B in your class, you would have been pushed down to a C or lower, regardless of how sure the teacher was.
- Awarding grades
My Dad agonised over this.
- The stupid algorithm
The algorithm didn't look at rolling averages.

There is a repport from a group of the best statisticians about this. They came to the result that it had given the correct grade in about 50% of the cases (from 65% down to 25% depending on subject). And the grading had generally been downgrades, except for students from privat schools that in general had been up graded. Strange right?
That doesn't make me feel confident when I'm 9s and 8s if I get 4s ...
Random question did they go to a low income college or one in which previous years have not achieved high grades?
*England and Wales

Thank god for Ross Greer
I think someone should sue a levels. IBO got sued by Norway (like the literal COUNTRY) and so they had to boost their grades up.

When you said "degrees" you meant Celsius.
I'm very proud of you Evan, you're one of us Brits now.

Thank you for the video and for answering my question! Every video you make is a tonic! I am enjoying catching up on your travel videos!
They should take your final Mock results and increase them based on the improvement from the last mock, and if the improvement is not large bump up the grade by 1 at least because that's the minimum a student would go up
I've been saying this too
I only sat one mock for each subject, that provided to massive boot up my arse wake up call to study up and pull my grades out of the toilet.
Just for referece we have system that rewards u if ur marks are above the avarege of ur school, regardless of ur area, by giving you "extra" points that are added to your admision exam, thus allowing students from poorer schools who put effort to be able to enter uni even if their schools arent cosindered "the best of the best".
Do you still want someone to talk to you a out it? I'm happy to help out.
as a tl;dr - A level students this year did not take their final exams (ie, what most of the grade - or even 100% of it in some cases - is based upon), so originally they were supposed to get their predicted grades (predicted by their teachers).
14:12 I really loved the American taxation video I honestly thought it was one of your best, but obviously don't burn yourself out creating complex content lol
I'm annoyed with my college grade only getting a pass, when I needed a merit to get into uni. Luckily my uni changed my conditional offer to unconditional. But i know others who haven't been as lucky..
Basically this years exam results are:
If you’re born with a silver spoon, have a rod up you’re backside and mummy and daddy pay for your education, then congratulations! Here’s your amazing grades!! If you’re working class, put all your blood, sweat and tears into doing the best you can to get yourself into college and/or uni then you’re bottom of the pile and crapped on. The Tories have REALLY not done themselves any favours for the next few elections. These students won’t forget.
They messed up badly I mean my cousin's their mocks were really good they got A's and B's but then they got downgraded by two grades which was sad. They're gonna appeal with their school.
Btw we REALLY appreciate your editing it’s SO GOOD and we love it
Wow I didn’t realise how long it takes to make each video!! Just thought I’d let you know that all your effort is appreciated and I love hearing about how you’re making improvements to your background, lighting, editing ect I think it’s really interesting
Thank you for mentioning the heat in Britain. I am British and when we were kids we didn't need a fan as having the window open was all we needed. However that changed a couple decades ago and every year we have a hot summer of at least 2 months, and yet I seem to be the only one who remembers it. I would love to have a ceiling fan (if I ever own my own home I'd probably install some), or AC (though I probably couldn't afford that).
"Little Susie, you can sleep in that drawer" 😂😂😂
I'm so happy that the SQA will be giving everyone what their predicted grade was going to be because im going to uni to do physics and they gave a D in advanced higher. I've never had a D in my life. I was predicted to get an B so i am happy that i'll have that officially whenever that happens
Damn, wish I lived in Scotland now
Claudia Lin I also get free tuition for uni :)
Same I feel for the A level students because at least ours are getting sorted :(
As people have said below A - levels is your choice but some people choose to go straight into work. Education can end at the end of high school.
I had almost perfect coursework and I never let a test slip and I got a predicted A in English and my teacher put in an A but I’ve been given a B. None of my Unis take less than an A and I’m gonna have to wait a year and basically go to unis that are not as good as I was hoping for (and I wasn’t actually being ambitious, my unis were very achievable for me)
omg I’m getting my results on Thursday and me and my friends are doing an experiment one goes to private school one goes to a bad-ish state and I go to a decent state school. Let’s see who gets down graded the most
Salty Pa3lla I actually wanna know what happens with that. I get mine soon I literally go to one of the worst schools in my area and I live in a poorer area. I’m predicted mostly 7s 8s and 9s cause I put so much effort into the exams. I’m thinking imma get 5s just cause of where I live 😭😭
@@alexevans6492 Same. I'm predicted 9s and 8s and I'm worried I'll be downgraded too.... I live in Cornwall which is the poorest county in Britain I think. (Its at least pretty poor compared to most counties)
ok I will update u guys with the results I also got 7s 8s and 9s in mocks
Can you let me know the results as well? I'm doing early entry for a couple of my subjects so I have to deal with this stupid algorithm as well as 4 months of no teaching pretty much
Curious to see what happens there, good luck to you all!
I’d love to see a studio tour!! I think that’d be really cool!
Good luck to everyone appealing there results
lovely video once again evan! this lighting is *chefs kiss* as always! so grateful that i did my a levels a while ago- this was crazy!
I know you don’t like reaction vids but with the announcement of the American song contest could you do something like American reacts to Eurovision. You could just react to costumes, the format and crazy fans. Also the history of it to bring countries together after war. And the fact places like Australia compete instead of the songs to avoid copyright claims.
There were quiete a few protests from a level students this week and I expect a lot more from gcse students next week
By the way, A levels are completely optional! You leave school in year 11 at age 16 and you can apply to come back to do A levels
A levels are not compulsory but education is compulsory. You need to stay in education until you are 18
@@luiginotcool
Yah, then u get an optional extra year until you're 19.
If you did a collab with Angelika Ole that would be AMAZING.
Scotland retracted their system for the exams and we haven't gotten over 25 degrees. Stop saying all of the uk had really hot weather!
Ruth Sodden it was 28 degree’s in the garden the other day 😂 soo its been over 25 is some parts of Scotland
This years grading has been such a mess! I honestly feel so lucky that I got the grades that I was hoping for and thankfully in Wales any A-Level grades we get that are below our AS grades will automatically move up which is a relief. I really feel for the students it's effected though because results day is already stressful enough without having to worry about this and it's clearly been handled so badly 😰
I'm so glad I bought an air conditioning unit this year. It's the first year I haven't had issues sleeping overnight in the summer
im going into 6th form soon and i actually didnt have to take my GCSE's in yr 11 because of corona and i'm actually alright with the grades i got. i know that some of them would have been worse if i had sat them and some would have been better if i sat them. so overall im pretty happy and i passed everything. (incase your interested i did for gcse: geog, computer sci, music and DT. and for A Lvls i'm hopefully doing: Music Technology, Geology and Maths (with finance) and possibly physics). Great vid Evan btw.
The UK is basically on fire right now. I kind of wish I didn’t live here now!
Same, but for the US
Laura Oh yeah
You guys are screwed I am so sorry
It’s funny tho, there was this whole thing about people from the UK who got stuck in different countries when lockdown happened, and it’s like BITCH YOU GOT LUCKY! I hope you’re okay tho.
I can confirm that the mock Brittish accents are pretty darn close to real southern British accents.
Honestly, pray for me and the other GCSE students this Thursday. Also, I like the GCSE/A-Level system as I feel like it gives you something to work towards but it does cause a lot of stress in the last 4 years of school though.
British kids need to sit A levels....Looking around at fellow Scottish students “ you guys doing A levels? No ? Yeah me nether “
Just something to think about when the time comes, but for your next language, you should think about learning a sign language. ASL or BSL would probably make the most sense to start off with. It’s been a really fun journey for me and could be for you too. 😁
It really sucks to not be rich rn if you're class of 2020. Its a classist system. Literally only people who are benefitting from this system is those who go to independent schools you have to pay for. And It bases it of your schools history instead of the individual's history. Which is gonna go awful for me because I go to an underperforming school, tho I am not an underperformed student. Yeah, im terrified fir my gcse results.
thank you for understanding and supporting our year lol. I got a’s and b’s constantly throughout the two years of photography, and *BAM* got a D!?!? like they didn’t even LOOK at my coursework which I worked on literally 24/7 big oof
3:52 I knew he was gonna say house prices, they are ridiculous here.
I got rejected from medical school because of one grade I missed which was lost because I live in a poor area
Hey do u mind explaining why poor people get downgraded? I don't take a levels so I'm not really familiar with how it works. Thank you for your help and I hope things work out for u
Skyla Helbig hey they now going back and giving teacher assessed grades. So they not downgrading us anymore. Thank you! Have u got gcses?
as someone fluent in ASL, i highly suggest ASL or BSL in your case!! its really fun to learn and the deaf community is a really wonderful place!
If you want to move out of London, move to Bristol. Bristol is really nice, like a mini London, lots of culture but more rural and cheaper. But still very connected and a lot of young people there.
Thanks for the german content btw. It’s helping me learn german actually which is really helpful since I didn’t do it at school.
4:40 is GOLD
The algorithm that’s been used this year is take the predicted scores, put them in order and give you the corresponding score from last year’s class. So if you have the best predicted score in your class you get the best score from last year’s class.
Basically I live in Peterborough in the UK during my stays, and I only eat Sicilian food for the most part, as there are many Italian and Sicilian families in the neighborhood.
Petition to get evan to stop saying "british" to do with school
-from a scottish person
If you want to afford a house and live in a connected city, you should consider moving up north to Manchester or Leeds - it's not as connected as London but there's so much there still compared to other towns and cities.
you don't have to do a levels once you turn 16 and finish school your officially finish education it is then your choose whether or not you want to get a job do a levels or do a college course
- Furley063 from my knowledge all people have to stay in education until 18 within the UK...whether that’s doing A-levels, BTEC or an apprenticeship is up to them
@@gesu2048 well i'm 19 in wales and what i said is what it is here might be different for England
Yeah the government requires you stay in full time education until 18 tho
but thats how it's always been a main different for wales is we have a thing called welsh bacc that we have to do it's like things of community , politics, work experiences ect
@@justabitofamug6989 again like i said it might be different then for wales as what i said is how it is here and that is what i have always been told by teachers i choose to go to college while some when they finished school went to get jobs
Whilst I probably got downgraded with my Highers, 2 A's and 2 C's (and a Nat 5 B haha), it is more than enough for my firm uni place! Very excited to go start learning to become an OT at the end of September. Good luck to those getting GCSE's soon!
You’ll soon find out if you got marked down cause it’s being auto updated
Why do so many people think this is the whole uk????
Scotland already got our results and it was just as bad and no one gave a shit.
At least the SQA is fixed it tho.....
In the uk in my secondary school you take a maths and English tests at the end of the year and tests throughout the year. Its stressfull
IMHO tests and mocks are different. Yeah we all get tested regularly but the mocks were a one off full on “exam conditions, previous paper” thing.
Can I recommend Kent. Close to London, by the sea, near the country, good rail links, friendly but house prices are more reasonable than London
Capitalism at its finest.
praying i get into sixth form... i am not ready for the gcse grading system to sabotage me
I so feel you, this is so crazy
Some unis are using mocks to get in, maybe schools might be the same?
At least it's only GCSEs and not for something mega important like university
I agree its totally unfair having all assessment based on a few exams (especially with what's happened with them this year) but I'd definitely say there's no "marking down because the teacher doesn't like you" here. Like all of our formal exams are externally and anonymously graded by random examiners, and even at uni you submit all your coursework anonymously. From what I know about America it seems to be a lot more influenced by the individual teachers if they want to
Ah, I'm not British but best of luck to all GCSE takers! Hopefully your scores come out alright on Thursday. Sending love! ❤️
Lucky.... *Says a uni student*
@@confusedpanda2 ah, but friend, I'm a US college student and taking a semester off because, even though I've only studied a year, I'm 10K in debt! Both our school systems have flaws, unfortunately :((
My experience as an A level student:
I was predicted AAB by my teachers and given BBU from the algorithm.
You don’t have to do a levels, if you want to go into a specific career you can do one course that is equal to 3 a levels
The main problem with the current A levels is that not only did it lower scores it did it by class so a rich person who went to a school that is expensive and only accepts the best wouldn’t have lowered grades but a poor person who went to a bad school would have their score lowered
I’m a simple person sees Alevel 2020 clicks
I feel like, someone already said this but, I’m English and obviously went to English school, and so I have to disagree with how you said teachers mark by letting their personal views get in the way. I fell like in the UK the school marking system and how teachers have to asses work is much tighter than the US. The only time I’ve seen people be marked on more personal levels is in PE. PE teachers give you either B,C etc. just to be tough and keep up the “you must be so strong to get a good grade in big boy PE”. Also in my schools marking system there is a 1-4 grading system for the students attitude.
