"How could you do this to America, it's the greatest country in the world?!" has to be the most stereotypically American reaction to applying for citizenship of another country... I get that it's mostly the older generations in the US that have that kind of "we are the best fuck the rest" attitude, but damn did it make me let out an audible sigh lmao

Tbh, I got the exact same reaction for choosing to move to the UK. My parents and other family were extremely "Why do you choose to abandon America? Life is better here?" and my friends "Why don't you just stay? Why UK?". A lot of people kept asking why I chose somewhere else, and the best I could day is that I wasn't happy or wanted to live in the suburbs. I had to convince everyonr about everything from healthcare, to flats, to living in the city. I'm one of those folks who had chosen to go from the suburbs to the big city, unlike 99% of my friends and family. To those who are facing the same issue, the thing I find the most useful is information and exposure. Everything is not what they expected.

And I really get the whole thinking that the trip situation is your fault - I'm also a planner type of person in my friend group and when we have gone on trips before and something doesn't pan out the way it was planned, I also tend to blame myself. In recent years I've started to ask that everybody coming on the trip also plans some activity for the trip or picks out at least one place they want to visit so that I'm not left with planning everything and we all share responsibility. That has helped me a lot with trip-related anxiety :)

1:18 that is so American! I have watched a video where an American described that being American is more political and less ethnical if that's a good word to use, so if you want to be an American - you're an American (probably don't even have to be a citizen at that point) and everyone will consider you an American.
Whereas in any other country, like here in the UK even after Evan becomes British, people will still think of him as an American first (even if decides to give up his American citizenship). Unless he starts perfecting that sexy British accent of course. 😉

It's silly, but as a Spanish speaker I'm super happy you are learning Spanish. Please come to Argentina when you want to spend a month like you did in Germany. We speak Spanish in a manner that not many Spanish speaking countries understand.

an easy past tense for spanish is the conditional
you keep the -ar -er -ir ending
there is only one type of suffix to add to all 3 types
if its irregular in the present, is irregular in the conditional

I like how fast Evan talks. To be fair I don't normally notice it until I read the comments. And I like how natural he is.
I've seen some videos where people sometimes slow down a bit too much.
The biggest example though is from my life when I just started studying at the university and they were doing a welcome presentation to the students, and at some point a lady started talking who I think works as the international students adviser or representative or something like that (we had a lot of international students, including me as well). And she was the only person who was speaking so slow (probably trying to help the international students understand better) but it was way too slow that I could just no longer follow her anymore. Imagine someone taking 5 seconds (I'm exaggerating of course) to pronounce a single word, by the time she finished you're already gone in your mind thinking of other things. 😄

Honestly I can’t listen to most audiobooks just because they speak so dang slow and I dislike the pitch shift by speeding it up.

I deal with similar with my mom. We need to find our own place in the world. I don't know about you and your mom, but me and mine wouldn't see much more of each other even if we lived closer. So...😄 We live on opposite ends of the U.S.

UK planning is often requires a delibration. Cambridge City council discussed planning for a shopping centre in 1921 and it eventually opened in 2007. A short time when the city dates back 800 years when the university was founded. .

I'd like to see you do a town-planning video, but I wouldn't say that many towns in Britain have been "planned" per se. Many towns, especially in industrialised areas, were thrown together quickly, without much rhyme or reason other than providing accommodation for the workers in the area. Often they were even paid for in part by the companies running the industry. They were often built for purpose, and the bare minimum at that, without much thought given to making the area look nice. The UK also has the disadvantage of having a fairly long history of established permanent settlements through different periods, using different materials. The United States, having been inhabited by notoriously nomadic peoples, was essentially like approaching a blank canvas. Planners & architects had the luxury of being as creative and/or pragmatic as they wanted. The US also has the geographical advantage of being far removed from the battlefronts of the Second World War (the tragedy at Pearl Harbour aside), and as such didn't suffer the heavy bombing runs that destroyed or damaged so much of the architecture in most British cities. That's got a lot to do with why they're such a strange, almost chimeric beast of old and new buildings.
