HOW TO REMEMBER TONES OF VOCABULARY I often get students said: It's so hard to remember the tones of my vocabulary. And it seems that tones are important, and Chinese natives might not understand or misunderstand you if you don't get your tones right, what should I do? How should I work on my tones and remember the tones? For example: party vs. queue in Mandarin / steamed bun vs. newspaper in Mandarin So in this livestream, I'm going to share how I suggest my students to do in order to remember the tones of Chinese vocabulary.
I think a good way to describe what you're suggesting is to memorize (via listening and practice) the complete sound of the word or character one is learning, so that the tone is simply a part of that sound. Then, for example, if someone can't remember what the tone/s is/are for a particular character/word, he can just say the word and notice what tone he is using. In other words, although he hasn't memorized consciously what tone/s the word has, he has memorized the tone as part of the sound of the word - i.e., he has learned the tone subconsciously. I think another way to say that is that (instead of having to remember a number to associate with each character) the muscle memory - the muscles and motions needed to make that sound - has incorporated the tone as part of that memory.
@@jjjtccc what you said is what i was told by my teacher and this makes sense to me. Of course, i spend time understanding what the tones are watch various videos on tones and do practice saying the words with some of the digital devices for practicing saying the words. This was so especially at the start because it is not only the tone that is new when we start, the sounds are new too! In fact, at the start the sounds were real initial obstacles for all the people in my class - i was fortunate to be in a class of eight people. However, even after being very familiar with the tones, and even now, i very much get the tones wrong because i am not sufficiently familiar with the language and that, i believe, is because I'm still submerging myself in the language through listening and saying practice to build up that muscle memory. Building towards getting the sounds i make to be instinctive, an instinct grounded in muscle memory. Eight months on the sounds are less of an obstacle and the tones definitely less of a mystery but it takes practice.

I'm in Iowa in the US and tuned in a couple of hours late because it was early in the morning. Remembering the tones for high frequency phrases is easiest for me.
