  • In this video, I have discussed all the features of LM 317 Adjustable Voltage Regulator with different Practical Experiments, like motor speed controller, LED dimmer, variable DC power supply etc.
    I will request you to watch the complete tutorial video of LM317 but you can also jump to any topic by click on the following Time Stamps:
    00:26 Operating Condition of LM317 from Datasheet [voltage, current, temperature rating etc]
    01:28 Explained how the LM317t circuit works with voltage equation [ use of capacitors, resistors in circuit]
    02:12 Pinout of LM317t ic [Adjust pin, output pin & input pin]
    03:20 How to make variable dc power supply circuit with LM317t on breadboard
    04:21 LM 317 circuit analysis [ input and output voltage measurement with multimeter]
    05:55 How to use LM317 as a fixed voltage regulator [LM317t as 7806]
    09:33 How to calculate power dissipation in LM 317 [ When heat sink should be used with LM 317]
    11:26 Protections for LM 317 circuit for different applications from LM317 datasheet
    In this video, I have used LM317t which is the TO-220 type and most common type LM317 IC. With a very simple circuit, the Output voltage can be varied from 1.25V to 37V with current rating 0.01A to 1.5A
    As lm317 is a linear voltage regulator so it is not so efficient but the circuit is very simple. so it is widely used in different applications like adjustable DC power supply, fan speed controller, LED dimmer etc.
    By solving a simple LM317 output voltage equation you can easily use LM317 as any fixed voltage regulator of 78XX series.
    It better to use a heat sink with LM317t ic for higher power dissipation.

    Hi, it very helpful video once I tried with 2 multimeter to measure with Vcc=13v input the output of 7v (1.25×(1+1k¤ ohm/220 ohms) =6.83v.
    Therefore the answer 7v from input and 3v from output as I know 3v is dropouts.
    My question is there connection problem? I was expecting to get 13v input and 6.93v output permanent.
    Many thanks.

    Great video but still have one question, does the resistor R1 also make the lm317 react to a voltage drop on the output side because of heavy load.
    For example, if the output voltage is set to 10V with one motor connected to the output. If you suddenly connect a second motor in parallel with the first motor, wil the circuit respond to the voltage drop and and still be regulating to 10 volt?
    My goal is to run an modeltrain (electric motor) at a desired speed and switch other trains (motors) on the same layout on and off without changing the speed of the first train.
    With regular power supply deliverd with trainsets you see the voltage drop if you add a extra train on the track and the trains slow down.
    Thank you in advance.

    i like that you diagrammed the circuit physically mapping to the actual pin outs. But i have a problem. I want to regulate a heater that creates smoke by boiling oil in my Model Train. Steam Engine. I have built this circuit and tested many times. It only works correctly if i put the NTC thermistor as the R1 variable value with the R2 as a fixed Resistance. As the heater increases past 140C i need to reduce Voltage to lower heat to prevent over heating. I can never get the NTC as the R2 to lower Voltage as it lowers Resistance, is that right?

    best video I have seen on the subject to date, explained everything clearly, show the circuit layout as well as what it looks like on a bread board, great, however I got a bit confused when you used a similar circuit to create a fixed voltage. Anyhow mmust try to build it now using an old 30v computer supply although I should really use a 12v supply like you did. What would be the calculation if I still only wanted 3v to 12 v using the 30v supply or could I continue to use the same values as you did?

    • @TechStudyCell
      @TechStudyCell  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks, If you connect the caps then it will eliminate the AC ripple so you will get constant DC voltage at the output. I said optional as if you don't use those caps still the circuit will works. But it better to use caps to increase the stability.

    How much should be voltage and Ampere of transformer if we want to use this Ic for 1.2 to 18 Volt , 1 Ampere current and what should be size of heatsink for this as it gets very hot ?

    • @kennmossman8701
      @kennmossman8701 Год назад +1

      GOOD question that is all to o often not covered perhaps because it is rather complex.
      If you are using a bridge rectifier as a full wave rectifier then the transfomer should be at least 1.4 times the desired output current. In your case rated at at least 1.5A
      I forget the channel but there is a very good video on HS. For 1.2V yould need a MASSIVE HS. I would have a swtch to select say 1.2 to 8V or 9V to 18V with a pre-regulator for the lower range to spread the heat dissipation

    Can i know the limitation input voltage for this LM317? is it when i consume voltage up to 40V, the output voltage can remain constant at 12v for 8 hours operation? I think the regulator will blow right?

    • @TechStudyCell
      @TechStudyCell  7 лет назад +3

      Thank you for your feedback.
      input voltage can be maximum 40volt [TO 220 type]
      You have to calculate total power dissipation in LM317 as I have discussed in the video. you have not mentioned the ampere value in your question. If power dissipation is high then use a proper heat sink, it will work fine.

      Tech StudyCell The LM317 have no maximun voltage, is floating regulator . 40 volts is the maximun input-output differencial voltage.
      The máximun power dissipation is 20 watts, after that the protection circuit shut down the regulator.

    If I use two 100 uf,25V capacitor(both in i/p and output side),i/p voltage 18 V and 100k potentiometer,220 ohm resistance.. then the circuit will work or not?

    Can I use 3A transformer

      You can use 3A transformer but the max current limit of the circuit is 1.5 A. So current should not be more than 1.5A. please refer the datasheet

    What will we do if we require fi 1amp currently . Please reply me asap

      The circuit can handle up to 1.5 Amps. It's better to use a heatsink with the IC and if the difference between input and output voltage more the circuit is inefficient.
