@Raniere Not at all. The brand stands for "For.Us.By.Us" it was directed at black youth, but particularly fans of hip-hop culture. There weren't many brands that celebrated and were directed specifically for that culture and FUBU's aim was to be that. Plus there is no correlation to FUBU and what brands like Hilfiger and Timberland did. If white people, or a subculture created by white people, were the sole reason for dramatic increase in profits for FUBU and FUBU decided to never admit their influence and hated white people wearing it...then you would have a point. But that didn't happen. It's important because black people, and subcultures created by black people, have historically been ignored in their influence of increased profit by brands as though they didn't want to be associated with them, but continued to profit from them.

The original Timberland boot that become popular in the hood was the "Super Tim." Not the yellow nubuck boots. They were a status symbol for drug dealers because they cost $300 dollars and they looked good. In DC, the ultimate drug dealer look was to wear your Super Tims along with a $400 dollar Eddie Bauer coat we called "the Bear." In addition to being a status symbol....the outdoor gear allowed drug dealers to hustle on the block in the middle of winter for hours at a time and even in the middle of snow storms. After the Super Tim trend...everyone started rocking black Tims. After the black Tims...everyone started rocking the nubuck Tims.
Timberland I believe cheapened the quality of the boot with increased popularity. Initially Tims were made for construction so they were waterproof and built to last. Now being that it's more of a fashion statement thanks to the hip hop culture, they've lowered the quality. That's what I believe.
It's absolutely true! The quality is not like it was in the 90s! Few years ago I bought a pair of the heritage boots for 229 €(!!!) and the inside was after a few months broken. In the back of the foot. And I saw often that there was pieces of glue on the boots. Really sad, but all workwear brands are not as they were in my opinion. Dickies, Carhartt etc. They became in Europe Fashion Brands and their quality was less good but the prices are climbing up. It's really sad Homie! I saw a RUclips channel Rose anvil or like this? He cut shoes for quality checks. If I remember right he said that the Premium Timbs are better than the regular ones!
It's not hip hop fault timberland did that to their shoes to save and make more money if you want a real pair of timberlands you got to go online or to the timberland shoe store and get the premium Tim cuz the ones they selling in other shoe store are the regular fashion ones that look like the real work timberland shoe
Timberland here in Italy are still going strong even tho not even near to the later '80s, but about the '80s in Italy you have to put it into a specific contest, which has *nothing* to do with hip-hop (that followed a completely different trend here). In those years (which I remember well as I was around 12/13yo) in Milano a phenomenon grew up very very strong. People (typically from the high and upper middle class) gathering around S. Babila square and having their favorite place in a sandwich shop named "Al Panino" (in En: "At the Sandwich). Those were the years of the economic boom of the city, the white collars with luxury cars were all over and these teenagers were differentiating themself from the rest by wearing specific clothes (mostly) coming from abroad and very expensive. I remember among these brands: Timberland shoes, Armani jeans, El Charro belts, Frye or Durango "cow-boy" boots, Moncler, Uniform, Avirex, Schott and (later) Barbour jackets, burlington socks and so on. You can read more of this interesting phenomenon here -> en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paninaro and you can see them in the video at 2:28 at San Babila metro station. These clothes were highly sought after, but difficult to reach for any normal-income family: my father was a tech designer working for Leonardo helicopters back then, and his income was around 830US$/month (1.650.000 italian lire); my mother was a nurse, her income was around 620US$/month (1.200.000 italian lira) and a pair of Timberland boat-shoes was around 170US$, a Moncler jacket more or less the same, a pair of Armani jeans was 60US$ (remember, I'm speaking of ~1988), a Schott leather jacket was 400+US$. To make a comparison a dinner out for a whole 3 person family was ~15US$ for pizza, beer, sweet and coffee. So yes, in those times there were people mugging others of clothes, definitively true! It's more or less like now for latest iPhones and such.
Its like bro *did you know white people made jeans and most modern cloths in the western world so if you wear that its cultural appropriation and ypur only wearing it because we made it popular
It's like a paradox. As a black man, i find myself criticizing the black community a lot for spending money foolishly on shoes and clothes and fancy cars, then realize the community inadvertently supports the economy by their actions.
We support the economy, but the economy doesn’t support us (they don’t even hire us, but ship their jobs to China and Vietnam) so it is foolish to make these white owned corporations rich, while we make ourselves poor.
It's not a paradox my brother. It's called irony through popularity and passive aggressive attitudes. Which is Ralph Lauren, Nautica, Hilfiger, Nike and so many other brands became so popular through black people both directly and indirectly.
From jump I’ve been a sneaker head but at one point in my youth I HAD to have a pair of Timbs yo. I remember my parents buying my first pair of and they couldn’t comprehend why they cost so much. Black suede jawns ( everybody had buttas so I had to be diff ) I’ll never forget-total came to like 115$. They made me wear them like everyday 😂
I got the dark brown suede Timbs that Rihanna wears, I've had them for over 15 years, a bit scuffed up, but still holds up great. I still often wear them in the winter time.
Almost every majour company out there neglect their black consumers who actually MADE the company. It's fair to say, the 2 billion dollar empire the Schwartz Family made selling to the VF company from the 90' to 05' is solely due to the black dollar, they will never admit it but they are sitting comfortably in their many multi-million dollar homes. That's the problem with black people, they almost never spend in their own community historically, or even create innovative business that can take off like the Tim's. It's now starting to catch on with Kanye's Yeezy and MJ's Jordans but there's not enough. When is the last time you heard of a biopharmaceutical company that is black-owned? Not really, sure there is the lack of capital or access to it dilemma but we have got to diversify. They should have been boycotted when they had the chance, so they understand black powernomics. This is only one company, imagine how many out there have made money on the backs of black people while having been already privileged by society. This post create a fire in you to do the same thing they did except you will give back to you own community and while creating wealth for your bloodline.
Only the 40 something and older year olds really know the true urban impact of the ICONIC Wheat color Timbs. The 90s is when the boots had the ultimate appealing look on us back then.
Black people will always be like that because that's the mindset you all can't seem to break out of that mindset so of course you always going to make other races of people wealthy because it seemed that you don't want to do it yourself you don't want to put in the work that goes into building a brand and I think that's sad but that's the way it is so whatever

If you don't know then shut up !
The premiums are good
sounds like u buy bad ones because the water proofs I buy literally lasts me 6months to a yr easily & I work 5-6days a week construction
I would watch videos of Cypress hill, gangstarr, tribe called quest, in 1990-1992, tims were a must have growing up in Nyc/Nj area.
EARLY 80s kid
This brands enjoys success because of Hiphop Music for so many years, L.V, Gucci, Versace Versace, timber n so more
Black people makes things cool, then everyone else wants a piece, that's why it always pays "literally" to appeal to the black consumers.
Wrong. Timberland was already popular way before the black community made it “popular”.

@@wantitwrite You're right. Not sure if race plays into it though, but we are definitely getting screwed.
@Đức 700 per month!!! i live off 500 a month. so stfu.
@Jim Stan where do you live?
Can't go with out a fresh pear every winter. The best boots ever. That will never go old.
My boyfriend in the 80s was wearing Tims before Jordans were ever thought of...in the DMV they were a must at the Go Gos
Were nike boots worn
Only the 40 something and older year olds really know the true urban impact of the ICONIC Wheat color Timbs. The 90s is when the boots had the ultimate appealing look on us back then.
I don't think that the commentator understood the meaning of "hustler" that Daymond was talking about.
I swear we (black folks) are so aggressively ignorant sometimes
Smh
Yes
So sad how the rich milk us outta our money
Black Americans
Mike Miter they didn’t “milk” you.. you black men didn’t have to buy them
Black people will always be like that because that's the mindset you all can't seem to break out of that mindset so of course you always going to make other races of people wealthy because it seemed that you don't want to do it yourself you don't want to put in the work that goes into building a brand and I think that's sad but that's the way it is so whatever
One of many ways "brands" lose market share is by disregarding the consumers :)
They forgot about the boot camp click who really made Tim’s famous
Tims were in the hood way before boot camp click.
Negative.
I’m a Doc Martens guy but not gonna lie, Timbs are more comfortable than Docs.
Timberland is a combat boots used by gangsters to fight
Timberland LLC is an American manufacturer and retailer of outdoors wear, with a focus on footwear. It is owned by VF Corporation. Timberland footwear is marketed towards people intending outdoor use. The company also sells apparel, such as clothes, watches, glasses, sunglasses, and leather goods
Can't think of Timbaland without thinking of the rap group Onyx. Their first album a Timbaland boot was right on the cover. That album was a big deal and a smash hit in 1993.
In the words of Maya Angelou
You are in love with Tommy,
Because his last name is Hilfiger,
But behind closed doors, Tommy,
Is calling you a n*****,
But you could care less,
Because you have been taught to dress to impress,
If I ask you about your true history,
You would have to look on the back of your jeans and Guess,
You come up in the club wearing Versace,
Clothes made by a homosexual male,
So even when you say you are straight,
It is very hard to tell,
And for footwear, you wear Timberlands,
Even under the sun,
That same tree that's the symbol for them,
Could have been the same one your ancestors were hung from,
I cannot forget Nautica,
When was the last memory you have of ships,
Coming to North America in shackles,
Being beaten over the back with whips,
And to my beautiful black queens,
Whose creative womb has become barren,
I am confused because your face says Nefertiti,
But your sweater reads Donna Karen,
When was the last time you saw Liz Claiborne,
Conversing with black women,
But as soon as her name is printed on a purse,
To Macy's you quickly go, running,
Ralph Lauren doesn't even look at black men,
Unless they are driving him around town,
But as soon as that slave master appears on the back of a horse,
You put whatever you have picked up down,
My people reclaim your status in this world and in your life,
F.U.B.U. in case you didn't know, stands for (For Us By Us),
Buying black will someday suffice,
Do you know who owns Timberland fashion?
Well, Timberland is owned by the president of the KKK,
Surprised? Do not be.
Read more books black people,
Always hope for the best and prepare for the worst,
You may not get what you pay for,
But you'll surely pay for what you get.

I grew up in the 90's in Brooklyn crown heights and bedstuy. I remember seeing kids in Junior high school and high school everyone was wearing timberlands in the winter time. There was no other boot to wear. Now I'm mostly wearing Nike ACG boots. Timberland are still 🔥I will only wear Nike boots and timberland boots. Facts.
The '40 belows' Timberlands were most expensive. Washington D. C. was rocking them in late 80's
Will never buy a pair
"go to these stores that were just not designed for that consumer ...at all"
I was a Timberland Euro Hiker man myself. After the boycott, I went strictly ACG.
I'm not a follower but the first time I used timberland for work was one time that I worked 50 hrs non stop. My feet were hurting like a MTFKR!! On one breake I went to ross and I saw son tim pros. I bought a pair and for the last 10 years my feet had been walking on tims 90% of the time.

Very interesting documentary. Glad they sold the company to people that pay more attention to all the consumers.

Timbs still hood to wear today people still be rocking them
Bought a new pair of Tims in midtown Manhattan in 2010. Lasted 10 years. Now I want reds and greys and everything else they make. Good shoes is good shoes
The sales slacked Off in the mid 2000's -2010 because that whole generation grew up and we stop being the street generation to the evolved working class and entrepreneurs. Our style in dress changed some. Our children aren't yet interested and may never be, in these as much as we were.
Aren't tims the New York Special?
Wow my G...all facts...timbs dont mean much to this new generation
@@alexhernandez946 I live in NY and Timbs is a staple to Hip Hop fans regardless of age,in fact younger kids are rocking them more than guys who grew up wearing them.

I was born in DC in 1971 & grew up in the DMV & Tim’s have been the most popular boot around here for as long as I can remember …..I can’t even think of another brand of boot that’s been popular in this area…seriously
Actually Harlem and the bx started then hip hop artist started wearing em look at early pics of Alpo n Rich Porter late 70s early 80s
D.C. been wearing timberland
I remember when Timberland put out a statement saying they made their boots for "hard working people, not Thugs." They were referring to you Black people as the "Thugs."
Was that rumor or is this documented?
So when you hear the word thug you immediately think of a black person ? Interesting
Sho you right we were the wrong demographics

Funny thing is I can't even imagine my self trying to workout or hike in a Timberland boot.
My pair over 25 years old and going strong. I cleaned them up the other day and they look as good as new. Actually made in the USA as well!
I always wondered what all the hype was about.
Hiking and combat boots come with better soles and tech overall but are much cheaper for what they offer.
Timberland boots were simply overpriced simple boots. But they were fashion.
Now I know.
I bought a pair of new but discounted Timberland boots, the outdoor hiking style and after just a few months the seam connecting the soul and body of boot broke, now I wear them everywhere and all the time but for 80$ I thought I might get more use. The brand Hi-Tech is cheaper I think and they last, Good Day and Energy to All☀️🐞🦋😊👍🙏💚🌲
Few mistakes rappers make. They don't invest their contract money, they pretend to be wealthy, and they never admit someone else dresses them.
There was NOTHING better than a fresh pair of Timbs. I love the smell of them.
Yes , in the 80s the Timberland was the iconic boot used by Italian Paninari teenagers.
These are the best videos ever

I've never been able to wear Timbs, wearing a size 13 Timbs always felt heavy 😭
