I grew up in South Central in the 80's and 90's and it was mostly Mexicans wearing the Cortez. Blacks were wearing FILA, K-Swiss, Air Jordans, Chucks, Pumas, slippers.
Yeh I think it’s cause the Cortez were a shoe that said a statement in a way about Mexicos past as a country with hernan Cortez being the worst person in our motherlands history so it’s symbolic that our gang culture wears shoes named after him
Yeah I remember back in very early 90s we were Cortez dickies corduroys creased up Pendleton beanies that was the Crip Way, Derby jacket. I still love the style NWA brought to the table.
Great video... brings back memories...between me and my wife we still keep cortez...reebok classic and pumas in the rotation... matching fat laces and all. Folks definitely sleep on kswiss... they were a staple growing up with a fresh pair of khaki's
I feel like being from the South, we associated Dunks with West Coast culture due to the Skating/Jerking subcultures out there. I used to be on SoleCollector back in the day and Dunks were a favorite for most California cats.
British Knights were also a staple in the west coast in the early to mid 90’s, but for the obviously wrong reasons; Crips wearing them as a diss to the Bloods. My mom never bought me any pairs of them as much as I liked them. Another shoe that’s at least considered a west coast staple is the Creative Recreation Cesario; that was one of the shoes to wear during the late ‘00s-mid ‘10’s, especially during the Jerkin’, Dougie and Cat Daddy dance movements. Also, any Jordan XIV with red colors were (probably still are) popular in Northern Cali with Norteño gangs (XIV=14=the letter N=Northern California). I’m only commenting for those who don’t know, so don’t chew me out if you do.
Bro I had a pair of all these growing up plus baby blue suede adidas I found in Huntington Park when I was in high school. The moral of the story is, these are all I could afford to buy at the time “ Growing up in the Hood”
From what Google says, these sneakers were affordable that was the main reason why rappers opted to buy them, it probably had little to do with style, people just dont want to be seen wearing rubbish sneakers especially if they are in the public glare and media. I have a pair of Nike Cortez in the red, white and blue colour way, they are one of my favourite pairs of shoes. White sneakers are back in style and that helps too. Thanks for a good video.
Thank you for doing this episode. I requested a West Coast representation for the Chuck Taylor's months ago you said you would. Get back to? Me and you did thank you.
Man I wish I could’ve done a better job on covering the connection between the all star and west coast hip hop but resources are limited as a small RUclips channel. I really appreciate the kind words Cell! All the best
growing up in LA I remember when Chuck Taylor’s was $20 at swapmeets. Reebok Classics in all white or all black, Cortez was and still is heavy especially in Latino gang culture.
I've loved Jordans ever since the Jordan 1. When I was in school everyone wore Reebok pumps but I hated the look of a giant orange ball on my tongue so I never wanted them. I would see kids pump up their shoes without it having any influence on their basketball game lol. When I left home and had to buy my own shoes I started wearing AF1s cause they were cheap
4:50 literally the colours and symbols of the South Korean flag 🇰🇷. It represents balance and unity between men, women, earth, sky, water, fire, and white for peace... Balance. Basically humanity.
Damn I never realized I actually wore all these growing up in Paramount. Being a neighbor city to Compton I got to see all this. My uncles grew up banging CVSengundo gang.
I remember watching Terminator back in the early 80's one of the first opening scenes when the character Kyle Reese put on a pair of black AF- 1ones that's when I knew I need to get some and I did
Depends on your area and style. If you're going around in long socks and Dickies shorts with white t-shirts? You might get wrong stares if your area is known for gang members, if you're dressed like a normal person who just happens to wear cortezes? You'll be good with most people. In my country we never adopted american gang culture so you're just seen as a weird guy if you go around in cortezes and long shorts, people here just know about the "hippity hop aye yo" old new york street stuff
How many faught somebody over they Cortez ✋🏾 😂😒 for real though I did I had every one you named accept vans I’ve always thought of them as a skateboarder shoe but I thought you might have mentioned the ellesses but this history was on point good content 🫶🏾
The Chuck’s and Cortezs’ is definitely a west coast gangster rap thing. As for the other ones in the video, you could make an argument for sure. I appreciate the critique!
You definitely forgot the Converse Dr J's. They were leather and white with either a red, blue, black, or green logo. I definitely saw those a lot before the Cortez got kinda popular in the mid 80s.
I'm from Texas. Rio Grande Valle where at the time everyone was Mexican beings we can literally walk across the border. I always felt the Cortez was a Mexican or a gangster thing beings that they are great when running from the law. I mostly grew up on east coast hip hop so idk just remembering how the cortez was a must
As a young G in my teenage years along with a few friends, ALL of us wore a nice pair of Cortez. Nothing related to the hood though, just a NICE pair of kicks!!!!!!!
Definitely right family! I grew up in Long Beach and moved to Paramount CA and your right bloods and crips wasn't on Cortez like that BUT my Chicano homies wore them or there family members did especially the ones that banged! Big Facts
Crips wore KSWISS and claimed it stood for Kill Slobs When I See Slobs. Also where I’m from British Knights were iconic crip must haves. There were rumors that if you cut open a pair BKs it said Blood Killer inside the shoe. lol
Aside from the K Swiss and Jordan's, none of these shoes mentioned "defined west coast hip-hop culture". The West Coast is bigger than just southern California. In the Bay Area, aside from the K-SWISS, Jordan's and Grant Hills, none of those shoes represented our culture. Khakis, chucks and Cortez were never part of our dress code the way it's associated in the urban fashion in the Bay Area.
It was for the Mexican community. Ben Davis started in frisco Levi’s 501s and the low rider culture got popular in San Jose. You see old pics of Mac Dre e40 and etc… with Khakis and Cortez and pendletons. Obviously when the bay got into the hyphy then things changed.
I only remember Jack Purcells being popular in 1996 and all the popular kids wearing sandals in 2003. I guess we all heard about Jordans in the 1990s and people in cities supposedly getting robbed/killed for them as well. Funny how Vans became popular. No one in the early-mid 2000's wore them except kids into punk rock. I had a pair old classic black/white of Old Skools because of Iak Mackaye of Minor Threat wore them in the 1980's. No one else at our school wore them. Also had the checkered black/white Vans slip-ons because of Fast Times At Ridgemont High.
The Air Force One was saved by Baltimore The shoe is a staple in Baltimore sneaker history If it wasn't for the infamous Cinderella shoe store saving the Air Force One in Baltimore Maryland they would not be New York people wearing it Nelly would not have no songs about it I know because I'm one half of the of the game I've been selected Air Force ones since 1982 and I also know the legend who's responsible behind the color of the month program too He's a good friend of mine and he has been in a sneaker game for a long time Nike Air Force ones will forever and always be a Baltimore Maryland staple we saved it for the rest of the world to get a chance to wear to sleep she was made for Moses Malone those come over red and white and debuted on the basketball court the first color that we ever seen as a general public with the metallic silver and white pair and that opens the door for the world to wear Air Force ones including New York people were getting on 95 coming to Baltimore to get this shoe if she was in Baltimore first
The K Swiss & Rebok wear popular because those were the only nice white shoes you can get at the time in California Prison System then they made it out to the streets. Its still a G thang tho 💯
I grew up in South Central in the 80's and 90's and it was mostly Mexicans wearing the Cortez. Blacks were wearing FILA, K-Swiss, Air Jordans, Chucks, Pumas, slippers.
Finally someone that really knows
U right
Im Italian and wear Cortez , I think it is more a Latino Shoe 😊
In the bay we rocked the Cortez
Yeh I think it’s cause the Cortez were a shoe that said a statement in a way about Mexicos past as a country with hernan Cortez being the worst person in our motherlands history so it’s symbolic that our gang culture wears shoes named after him
I like how this channel isn’t just stuck on Nike brand and covers all brands 👍
I appreciate it
Yeah I remember back in very early 90s we were Cortez dickies corduroys creased up Pendleton beanies that was the Crip Way, Derby jacket. I still love the style NWA brought to the table.

Appreciate it Marcus
I feel like being from the South, we associated Dunks with West Coast culture due to the Skating/Jerking subcultures out there. I used to be on SoleCollector back in the day and Dunks were a favorite for most California cats.
Very interesting topic! Great video as always!
Thanks Dylan!!
A staple of every Sureños wardrobe. Norteños too. 😂 Basically all Cholos

K swiss..tan Khaki dockers and a nautica polo' that was me 95. #Facts.
S/o to yall Nacho, Another dope video!
The rise and fall of Troop sneakers would be fire, too. They were HUGE in the late 80s.
You need to do a sneakers and 80-90 metal scene which was huge
Actually I have a script written already 😎😎😎😎
Reeboks was like a southern thing a lot of drug dealers in New Orleans would wear they call em Soulja Rees down there
Definitely love watching these videos keep up the awesome work
The air jordan, the nike cortez and converse were 90s symbol
From what Google says, these sneakers were affordable that was the main reason why rappers opted to buy them, it probably had little to do with style, people just dont want to be seen wearing rubbish sneakers especially if they are in the public glare and media. Rappers wore slippers
Another incredible mini doc!! Love it!! Keep em coming! J.T.
Thanks Joshua! Means the world to heat you say that
Good video as usual 👊🏽
Thanks Brodie

What about the LA Gear street hikers !!!!! Those were definitely mixed in back in 90/91 in east Los
K-Swiss with ballie socks and a gold Rolex anklet is so fly. Thats how my auntie and big cousins wore there’s back in the day.
❤
The 90s was the best time for West Coast hip hop

G NIKES they're pretty comfortable nice cushion too ... 1st kicks I bought on my own back in da 90s, n da Chuck's just WOW
Nike SB just came out with a skate version of the Cortez that look pretty good except an unnecessary extra swoosh on the toe.
Ahhh they always ruin silhouettes by adding a mini swoosh near the toe box lmao
Damn I never realized I actually wore all these growing up in Paramount. Being a neighbor city to Compton I got to see all this. My uncles grew up banging CVSengundo gang.
THE ONLY MEMORY, I HAVE ON THIS TRAINER. WAS IN, ROCKY 2 FILM! 🇹🇷💪💙
the vid can also be used a a guide of what hos o no war in LA hoods😂😂😂
🌴🌴
Any of these shoes with some starched down 501s and a crispy white t 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Never liked the cortez silhouette, but always good vids from our boy nacho 👍🏼
Ayyyy appreciate it
Awesome video!
i'm in love with my top tens
I remember watching Terminator back in the early 80's one of the first opening scenes when the character Kyle Reese put on a pair of black AF- 1ones that's when I knew I need to get some and I did
I wanted to buy the Cortez for myself but aftrr hearing so many stories of gang activity I’m scared I’ll get killed. So much for wanting shoes 🥲
Really depends on where you live
@@NachoAverageFinds very true
I've been rocking them my whole life and nobody cares anymore. They are seen as retro now. 🤣

@@cobracommander9138 People still care, Chicano gangs are still active. You just don't hear about it. Just be careful what hood you're in.
I still rock the old school KSwiss classics. Timeless design
How many faught somebody over they Cortez ✋🏾 😂😒 for real though I did I had every one you named accept vans I’ve always thought of them as a skateboarder shoe but I thought you might have mentioned the ellesses but this history was on point good content 🫶🏾
I wouldnt really say any of these define west coast hip hop more define hip hop in general
The Chuck’s and Cortezs’ is definitely a west coast gangster rap thing. As for the other ones in the video, you could make an argument for sure. I appreciate the critique!
Alot of the clunky brick type shoes werent as popular in cali for some reason lol
Up here in the bay, all the nortenos wore K•Swiss. A lot of kids wore them as well. And wore them with either Khaki pants or anchor blue jeans.
K swiss were worn in southern California to... mostly by older blacks in the 80s onward
Main you took your style from forest gum He was the 1st one out there rocking them shoes And then it was the vattos with the Super high Soxx 80,s90s
Great video
I'd on the sneakers at 0:44 o can ses the Cortez on Eazy, and 4s on U-Ella.
They were ahead of their time
All west coast sneakers 👟 that play huge Part in gangster lifestyle...wore Reebok classic back in the day
You definitely forgot the Converse Dr J's. They were leather and white with either a red, blue, black, or green logo. I definitely saw those a lot before the Cortez got kinda popular in the mid 80s.
90's filipino rap group Mastaplann wear also puma suade
*Chuccs,Cortez And Timbs*
alot of eazy e , kendrick, Dr dre ,snoop and Nipsey mentions on this video. It shows how great their influence was on the west
Did I rock K SWISS with Duckies? Absolutely sir!!!
Why am I not surprised. LBC uniform
Who’s gunna bring back the K Swiss? Here’s a little trivia for you… I used to work in a factory that made K Swiss display stands for JD Sports 🤘🏼
You should've kept some of those displays for the collection
I'm from Texas. Rio Grande Valle where at the time everyone was Mexican beings we can literally walk across the border. I always felt the Cortez was a Mexican or a gangster thing beings that they are great when running from the law. Can you do Anthony Anderson's best sneaker moments on Black - Ish?
As a young G in my teenage years along with a few friends, ALL of us wore a nice pair of Cortez. Nothing related to the hood though, just a NICE pair of kicks!!!!!!!
the narration was good
Cortez is not a blood or crip shoe it chicano we rocked it first
Definitely right family! I grew up in Long Beach and moved to Paramount CA and your right bloods and crips wasn't on Cortez like that BUT my Chicano homies wore them or there family members did especially the ones that banged! Big Facts
Wrong ya’ll be copyin a lotta things like the belts and pendletons and more like even the baggy 501s🫵😂

Definitely more than 5
Crips wore KSWISS and claimed it stood for Kill Slobs When I See Slobs. Also where I’m from British Knights were iconic crip must haves. There were rumors that if you cut open a pair BKs it said Blood Killer inside the shoe. lol

It's a good thing Nike Cortez are running shoes. Did a few 100 yard dashes wearing them in the wrong hood lololol
Can you do a video of the air Jordan XVI

I basically thought whatever ice cube and Chris Tucker had on in the movie Friday was pretty much the signature of what was worn on the west coast

We called them dope mans
What about the run dmc Adidas shoe
I had most of them. Good times..
I think you sorta skipped over the fact that alot of these sneakers were also worn heavily by the mexican american rap scene
This foo skipped us and talked about the blacks instead. Por que?
Kendrick Lamar wore Reebok classics when he performed ' We Gon Be Alright ' on top of a police car at the 2015 BET Awards.
In the bay , nortenos wear them but they gotta earn the right.
I love the work you and your brother do!!!!
🔥
I have everything!!
Brilliant stuff, thanks! 👟🔥
🙏
K Swiss were the shit back in the day!!
This video is coming from a squares perspective wanting to study cultures except for there own
😂😂😂
The K Swiss & Rebok wear popular because those were the only nice white shoes you can get at the time in California Prison System then they made it out to the streets. Its still a G thang tho 💯

Forest Gump ran to Navajo nation with them kicks👍
What about the sneakers that defined 80s pop music?
Not a bad idea
U forgot the Air max 95

They were first worn by Mexican Gangs.. They were introduced at the Olympics in Mexico city... FYI!!!
This guy doesn't even know or ignored the fact that West Coast rappers base most of their look on the cholo style.
Happens all the time.. They always overlook what our people have done in this country not just hip hop... Whatever..
Timberland should be added
