Yes, John had the answer to the interviewer's question even before the question was completed. Properly termed UNDERSTANDING. This was also properly noted in researchers/writers about Jim Morrison and his extraordinary intellect. Not-so-much that he (Jim) was always the smartest kid in class/school, but that he UNDERSTOOD the entire subject-matter. No need for explanations or elaboration. An essential element in all poets.
Great story teller! I've heard him mentioned in the same sentence as Mark Twain and that's a pretty sweet endorsement and good company to keep I'd say.
Wow, so glad this is here. I write this on the day of John's passing (4/7/2020), eyes welling as I listen and type. What a tremendous artist, with a gift like no other; no one can compare. RIP, brother John. We'll be keeping your songs alive FOREVER!!!! ♫♪
You're not alone jsamat24.. Been crying since I heard the news 2 day's ago. Spent my 64th birthday crying all day yesterday. Playing his music, drinking smoking and dancing alone. Saddest birthday ever so far. Rest in Peace John Prine. ✌💞🎸🎶🌹🙏 KEH 🇨🇦 04.09.20.
4/7/2020 when John passed away, my birthday and now at 75, I feel just like him and can relate. Love the guy and hope to follow in his footsteps and meet John along the way 🤠🇵🇭🇺🇸
i,m 63 and only found john a year ago. he has become my new hero. his way with the English language is second to none. i am in awe every time i listen to his songs.
I’m the same didn’t find this guy until about a year ago. By pure accident. Have I been living under a rock. I thought Dylan was good but John has the commoners touch with words. Simply amazing
Another 63 yr old here, when a friend (who sends me tunes in the 'wee hours') one night 6 months ago sent me Orange Blossom by John Prine. I was blown away, haven't stopped listening since, while thinking "where have I been "?... Nice to know I'm not alone thank God for John Prine. What a genius singer/songwriter. RIP John Prine 🙏
George, this was a phenominal interview. John Prine is the master. His music is simplistic but his lyrics are so awe inspiring that the total package makes you stop and think about what you just heard and realize it has changed you in a good way, Probably the best song ever written is by John Prine "Hello In There".
A true legend in his own time. Outstanding interview. John is so real, so down to earth and so open and honest about his life. I only wish Steve Goodman was still around to sing with John. Thanks again for this interview.
"9 when I get up and 13 when I go to bed". What a free spirit John Prine puts out for the world to enjoy. At 75, I feel younger every time I hear this "great talent" talk or sing. 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air convertible must be responsible for some damn good music.
The great first love introduced me to John Prine. Instantly fell in love with the music and John Prine. We saw him at Red Rocks in 2017. Best show we've ever been to. Found ourselves in tears more than once. Lucky to still call him my love after 6 years. Honey, we're the big door prize.
His albums the tree of forgivenesses is a gem ..... it puts John Prine up there with Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen .... plus the engineering on this record is excellent ......the topic of life and death and everything in between ......what else is there ....
Great interview with my hero, John Prine. You did a nice job of staying out of the way and letting him talk, just throwing in a few things here and there to keep him going.
Man, he just described my relationship with his songs exactly. I’m 20 now and grew up listening on road trips with my parents and now every time I hear him sing it makes me think of camping and our old Subaru and being 11 years old.
Thanks. I've been in a fog since John passed. The last few days were spent watching live performances and covers with a knot in my stomach and misty eyes. Seeing John play in your house and this interview finally let me move on. Made myself a Handsome Johnny to toast the end of the interview and to a life well lived. My condolences to friends and family. Love to all.
I absolutely loved his music. My son introduced me to his music probably mid to late 80's. I never had the pleasure of attending a live concert. So @ 78 yrs of age my bucket had been re worked. It was 2015 he was in concert @ WVU the CAC I missed because my husband, the love of my life had just completed 16 days in extensive rehabilitation @ Health South after life threating SEPTICEMIA .
As I watched this interview, the reflection in my phone made me realize how often I was smiling - which was frequently. I just plain old enjoyed seeing a more revealing, humorous and interesting side of John. Further into the interview, it hit me - as much as I'm loving this, John's gone and I can't change that - which brought me from happy to sad way too quickly. Death is the worst part of life. Phooey!
Stromboulopoulos: "71, that's not old." The hell it ain't. I'm 66, and that's getting there. Great interview. George has Prine fired up because he's an enthusiastic fan. Lovely album. Sorry John died yesterday, but now he's in Paradise, which is a lot better than old torn-down Paradise, Kentucky. I can't wait to meet him in heaven. I'm from the western suburbs of Chicago myself and knew my fair share of sons of transplanted hillbilly factory workers, like Prine's father was. We Yankees were hard on those kids at school, which probably made him more introspective, and look what came of that. God bless John Prine.
My Aunt Margot is 88 & to her, '71 isn't old yet!' She was having a much more enjoyable-2-her, active life at 71 (loves doing physical out-doorsy stuff )/doing stuff her body can't do anymore. She makes the best of it, but, yup-she'd trade 71 for 88, if given the chance.
You were free to fly after that first album. And, being a mailman is the hardest job in the world. Walking all day in 20 below weather and a full on thunderstorm is the ultimate. I tried it and lasted three weeks. Glad John found a much better living. Thanks.
A great interview that I have returned to a few times. What a tragic loss. When I get to heaven, I'm gonna shake God's hand Thank him for more blessings than one man can stand Then I'm gonna get a guitar and start a rock-n-roll band Check into a swell hotel; ain't the afterlife grand? And then I'm gonna get a cocktail: vodka and ginger ale Yeah, I'm gonna smoke a cigarette that's nine miles long I'm gonna kiss that pretty girl on the tilt-a-whirl 'Cause this old man is goin' to town
Excellent interview with John, maybe the best I have seen yet! This interviewer was so right on with his questions...he really got John to say so much in a half an hour.
How was not aware of this until this evening, found out about it listening to the mighty CKUA radio station. God Bless John Prine! I am sure he is having that Vodka and Ginger Ale, and enjoying that 9 mile long cigarette!
sweet revenge.........John's a great singer/songwriter..he's a big part of my growing up year's and this new recording is pure John Prine..he's in touch with life at so many level's. I hope he out lives me, i couldn't stand to hear elsewise.
Man he's making me feel old. Where did the time go? What a legend. He's on my top 100 playlist of all time. Plus..I got this phrase of his going viral in our circle..."and Billy Bob said "hmmm"." (Whenever someone says something awkward).
That's because of his throat cancer.he went two rounds with cancer and won this virus took him too soon.its kicking everyone's ass .Much Love Mr Prine you will be missed
Love this man. Mr. Prine is a crusader for the common, hard working people of the country he loves and honoured to be a very simple part of something that is touching, true and from the heart of a man that truly thinks everything is going to be OK-if! Any one thinking that"cancer" can be in some way a positive experience, just eat a lot of peaches.
This is a great interview. I love listening to John so much, both singing and talking. His insights on life and songwriting are priceless. The interviewer's questions were really great and he made John feel at home. Beautiful.
Adding a comment because this is one of the best things I've ever seen on youtube. John Prine was a wonderful songwriter and there's not enough of him on the internet. Come on home, John.
Excellent interview-lead, listen, contemplate the answers and don't talk over your guest. John Prine, like a few others, is a national treasure. He has no frosting on his cake. It's all cake. For years I resisted listening to his new music for fear of letting go of the last. But my fears were unfounded. You can't replace or let go of a beautiful memory emblazoned inside your heart. You can't. Some people say that he is a terrible singer and a terrible picker. Well I say that terrible never felt so good. Never had the chance to catch John, Steve Goodman or Bonnie Kollock at The Earl in Chicago in the old days. I did get to catch Johnathan (Johnny) Round and Jim Post - for those who remember. Keep on pickin', John. Don't ever let the muse go!
lakerooster - Thank you lakerooster. I can't believe I wrote that one year ago and now he's gone. Hopefully someone will post his interview with the Poet Laureate of the US from a few years back. That too was a special interview.
I've listen to John Prine sine I was in my 20's. I'm 72 now. I hadn't listened to him in years. Busy with grandkids and great grands. I started again a few months ago. I hadn't heard he'd passed away. I was so sad. It broke my heart. I think he has been one of the greatest entertainers ever.
I love that George knows his stuff. It's obvious he loves John and asks intelligent questions. Still sad, but this interview makes things a bit bette right now.
I have 5 cats but I don't have any Cadillacs. I found a litter of abandoned kittens and then couldn't give them up... so. Great interview. Nice and laid back. This guy's a legend in his own time.
bad pop music makes bad cars. the humor of john prine just ties everything together, even the tragic. there's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes. it is so heartbreakingly sad but yet the image is cartoonishly funny.
My older brother Bob Hammond turned me on to John's music back in the 70's. He went to Proviso East High School with John and so did I but 15 years later. Love John's music! Unfortunately my brother died at 45 when i was 30. I'm 55 now and every time a John Prine tune comes on in my car (iPod), I think of my big brother and now, I also think of John. God bless you brother Bob, John Prine and all of you out there.
My kuudoss to Stommbo. Your young and interviewed everyone. Your young and know your job. But you treated John with the best respect anyone deserves. He's been thru the shit show in the industry and as in a glorious age finally , getting respect and recognition .He is very Humble of his career as I hear it in the interviews. I wish I listened to this talented icon sooner. CHEERS
I can't believe that the first time I heard of John Prine was the day he died. I'm 57. The first song I then heard was his vodka and ginger ale played on the CBC. Then I was hooked for sure when I viewed John performing at Strombo's House. I somehow prefer his aged voice over his younger vocals. Gotta go now, today's Thursday, egg and daughter night!
Strong, generous energy coming from John. He took total control over the tone of this interview, clearly because George seemed (uncharacteristically) nervous. What a gracious, brilliant artist.
What a lifetime of songs and stories! My favorite song of John's is all his live stuff! Watching him and hearing him tell stories! He said he's 9 when he wakes up and 13 when he goes to bed! I feel the same way,no matter how old I get!
I have always love John Prime. I am so sad that the world has lost him to covid-19 in April of 2020. He was just the best on stage and off. To listen to him is such a pleasure.
hey strombo thanks for reaching out and bringing John to Ontario...and thanks for the one on one interview...it`s great to hear John`s conversation...we`re able to learn his history his life and what he`s all about...it`s too bad Neil and Bob are so private...because John opens up and is not shy about it he gains fans and people come to love him etc etc....truly a great songwriter and one super duper easy goin guy....what a shame he`s gone cause i think his writing was movin on to different heights...eg I Remember Everything.....Strombo you said it right on....if you like john prine you really really like john prine....
My regret is to not have known who wrote the songs we listened to as I grew up but discovered late in my life. He had so much more to give for which we now will forever long for. Just like a few other greats like John Lennon or George Harrison.
22:37 - 23:39 ''The greatest thing by far is to be a master of metaphor; it is the one thing that cannot be learnend from others; and it is also a sign of genius, since a good metaphor implies an intuative perception of the similarity of the dissimilar.'' -Aristotle ''Thus is, The King of Sillyness, Sadness, & one Helluva Bridge Builder... Whose similies safely raises us, above life's many drowning rivers!'' -gilpin 61618 You're @ the very top of the Music Artist's Interview Field, Maestro Strombo!
What a great interview! I love that there were no commercials interrupting the flow. I could have listened for hours. I’ve been a fan since I bought that first album Prine mentioned where he was standing by a bale of straw on the cover of a vinyl LP I picked up at an Army PX in Georgia in the 70s. His connection with Kris Kristofferson came up during the interview when Prine mentioned he was ‘discovered’ when Steve Goodman dragged KK across Chicago to hear his buddy John Prine late one night at the Earle of Old Town after they had all finished their evening shows. I had been a fan of KK since I bought HIS first album a few years earlier, so I think I must have been attracted by that same ability to craft lyrics and sing them that KK observed during that impromptu audition.
I love listening to him talk almost as much as hearing him sing and play. A true gentlemen and he's sharp as a tack!
Yes, John had the answer to the interviewer's question even before the question was completed. Properly termed UNDERSTANDING. Goodness, this guy. Huh? This guy!! 'It's like I wrote a joke & they finally got it 45 years later'. The man is a fine wine.

John changed my life in 1977 the first time i heard him. Thank you for 40+ years of songs I could totally relate to.

He has come very close with Summer's End.....hard to pick the best !!
It amazes me that he had that insight so many years ago when he was young; and now........here we are.
it was phenomenal congratulations to both and thanks
I love 'Some humans aint human', maybe because I kicked o non-human out of my house a couple of days ago.
is it simplistic, or ideally suited as a foundation to lay the words upon?
‘‘ the coat that doesn’t fit me and the boats I hardly wear” he just can’t help it. Shine on John. 🙏🏼
A true legend in his own time. Outstanding interview. John is so real, so down to earth and so open and honest about his life. I only wish Steve Goodman was still around to sing with John. Thanks again for this interview.
I have come to really appreciate John Prine and his music. He is an Old Soul can't say enough good things about John.

The man is 110% awesome !!! A genuine American icon , some people just haven't figured it out yet.
It's unfortunate that John Prine's passing brought me here; George Stroumboulopoulos is an amazing interviewer.
"Bad pop music makes bad cars" Love the moments in life singing Prine songs with my kids in the car!

I heard John Prine, for the first time in 1975 at SIUC, I miss knowing he is alive, but I get to listen to his music every day.
Strong, generous energy coming from John. He took total control over the tone of this interview, clearly because George seemed (uncharacteristically) nervous. What a gracious, brilliant artist.
I could listen to this for hours!
Great interview, love the man. Such great music. True life down to earth.
He is pretty incredible. He is one of the few artists that connect my kids with me. Can’t wait to see him this fall in Colorado.
I saw him when he was in oregon shortly before my husband died.
So sorry to hear that. I hope you find the strength to move on. Hopefully his music can help with that.
Wow, I sure do miss John Prine, and this big old goofy world misses this American legend, too.
Prine is just fucking awesome - in every single way! Thank you for posting this great interview.
hey strombo thanks for reaching out and bringing John to Ontario...and thanks for the one on one interview...it`s great to hear John`s conversation...we`re able to learn his history his life and what he`s all about...it`s too bad Neil and Bob are so private...because John opens up and is not shy about it he gains fans and people come to love him etc etc....truly a great songwriter and one super duper easy goin guy....what a shame he`s gone cause i think his writing was movin on to different heights...eg I Remember Everything.....Strombo you said it right on....if you like john prine you really really like john prine....
My regret is to not have known who wrote the songs we listened to as I grew up but discovered late in my life. He had so much more to give for which we now will forever long for. Just like a few other greats like John Lennon or George Harrison.
Great interview, just seen him 1 day after this was posted....better than ever!!
saw him in Dublin last night and totally agree. 4th time seeing him but the best.
Hey George, I'm a big fan of what you're doing. Love the live performances. Keep it up.
You were such a beautiful soul and I miss you everyday. The only real American treasure

You're @ the very top of the Music Artist's Interview Field, Maestro Strombo!
Thank you we all Loved John Prine
One and only!!
Many thanks for sharing/posting.
