Great Machine! I ended up getting a used '97 ECM Giotto in mint condition. So far, so good!

Hi, another question if you don't mind: I noticed that when I fill the water reservoire by more than 1/2 its capacity, water spills from the machine floor (out from the power chord hole). I am using filter water. What is happening? thanks!

Hi guys, is it possible to fit a PID on ECM Giotto? Any way to reliably measuring the temperature?

Hello! In theory, it is possible but it will require some work and parts. We don't offer this service but have seen some videos on how to do it.

@@ozespressoI have been recommended against installing one because it would require an irreversible altering of the machine. As I am happy with the current state of things, I guess I will not work in this direction! Thanks for the honest comment though :) I was wondering if there is a way to get pre-infusion done with this machine. thanks!

What if I see a very fast outflow of water? The grind seems OK and tamped well. Is it a problem with flow control?

If the coffee runs too fast with no crema, it is most likely one of the following or both:
      1. A coffee beans freshness issue (common)
      2. Grind size issue or dosing issue.
Coffee stays fresh only for 3 weeks or less from the roast date on the bag.
If it is older, then the coffee is stale and will not brew/grind properly (no crema or good flavor).
If the bag has a "good until" date on it, it is probably not fresh and will dry fast. It's very similar to fresh-baked bread that dries after a few days vs processed bread that holds longer.
If the coffee grinder setting is too coarse, the water will run too fast through the coffee puck. You can adjust the grind size a bit finer and then run a test.
You can repeat this process until you see better results.
Also, please use a scale if you are not using one already, to measure the gram amount of grounds going to the portafilter basket.
a fewer amount of coffee grounds will result in low/no crema and fast shots that taste bad. The standard dose is 18 grams of fresh ground coffee for common 58mm baskets.
If you replaced a type of coffee bean, it will grind differently and the grinder will need to be calibrated to the new bean.
Here is a link to a technical video that talks about this: ruclips.net/video/-BT7-yOUMDM/видео.html
Last, in some cases, this could be related to the grinder itself, some brands and models will not grind fine enough for espresso, or sometimes the burrs could be dull so we want to take that into consideration and make sure it is not part of the problem.
      I hope this helps

The Gicar controller is not really reliable...I replace 3 already on my Giotto.

Do you have a surge protector on the outlet? All espresso machines controllers are sensitive to power issues and if this had been happening more than once to twice, it could mean that there is another problem that might be causing this.
Also, it will be good not to leave the machine turned on 24/7 to prevent similar issues.
      Hope this helps! -Y

Thanks for the advice, most of the time that was some of the relay that was defective.
But those Gicar Controller are expensive about 300$ CAN.
The next step I'll install a PIC controller from Amber.
Not sure that a surge protector could help, since electricity supply in Québec is quite clean.
But this is a quick fix...so why not ?
      Thx for your suggestions !
