  • Flying a glider is relatively safe but in case of a mid-air collision or a technical problem, we like to have a plan B. Wearing an emergency parachute is a common habit. But do you know how a parachute looks from the inside and how to use it?

    Thank you for this. I have always wondered just what is inside that backpack that I put one before each flight, just assuming that there was something that would be useful in an emergency. Now I know. And great to see a manager of an operation who actually knows the product - not always a given thing.

    Nice work as always, Stefan. Interesting to see a master craftsman at work. (might you even out the volume between his voice and the music, please? I found I was turning the volume up and down).

    What a great vlog. They have a nice Facebook page too. I have never used my Aviator (I hope I don't have to) but after considerable research, I thought they made great products so bought one. Many colleagues have bought less expensive round, non steerable parachutes and for the life of me I don't know why. They companion of being uncomfortable whereas I have fortunately never had any such issue. The parachute featured looks awesome. Great vlog. Thanks.

    The packing process looks quite complicated.
    Will you be able to find a certified packer that can re-pack this (square) parachute for you once a year?

    • @SteFly
      @SteFly  3 года назад +3

      Thanks for the great question, Johan!
      I'm a packer by myself but for now I won't make the license for the Wingman. The packing is completely different to round parachutes.
      The great news is that skydivers use these parachutes as reserve and they also need to pack them. So you can give it to the next skydive club for packing. And they use the reserve parachute more often than we glider pilots do. So they are well tested ;)

    • @Johan-ex5yj
      @Johan-ex5yj 3 года назад

      @@SteFly Of course, that is a great solution! 👍
      So now you have the right reserve, all you need is the main chute and you can also join the skydive- club?! 😀

    Is it worth the great cost tho? I mean, i could probably get a Dacia for this...

    • @RoamingAdhocrat
      @RoamingAdhocrat 3 года назад +1

      yes, but if you bail out of a glider with a Dacia strapped to your back, you'll definitely die
      also - weight limit for pilot + personal equipment must be 110kg or less for any EASA sailplane (please, someone, tell me I'm wrong) - and a Dacia will put you waaaay over that, so not only would it be unsafe but you'd void your insurance

    • @mtlfpv

      A Dacia probably won't help you much when you are plummeting towards the ground

    Das hört sich alles echt cool an mit dem Steuern usw. Aber wie soll man das wissen?
    1. Die meisten Segelflieger sind keine Fallschirmspringer (mich eingeschlossen) und haben keine Ahnung wie das mit dieser Bremse etc funktioniert
    2. Man ist gerade aus einem Flugzeug abgesprungen was man nie geplant hat und nie vorher sehen konnte ist vermutlich voller Adrenalin und vergisst deswegen diese Sachen wenn sie einem vor Jahren erklärt worden sind

    • @SteFly
      @SteFly  3 года назад +1

      Der Fallschirm ist so ausgelegt, dass man auch ohne Steuern und Bremsen heil am Boden ankommt. Hier ist ein Beispielvideo dazu: ruclips.net/video/ZV-_AlRQo2Q/видео.html
      Man kann also die Steuerleinen einfach angeklettet lassen und somit bleibt die Bremse auf 50% gezogen. Am besten zieht man dann noch leicht am kompletten Leinenbündel, um sich gegen den Wind auszurichten.
      Auch das Steuern und Abfangen stelle ich mir nicht sehr kompliziert vor.

    • @Johan-ex5yj
      @Johan-ex5yj 3 года назад +2

      @@SteFly The steering is really not complicated at all: You pull on the right brake, it pulls down the trailing edge of the chute on the right, this increases the drag on that side so the chute will yaw (and turn) to the right… Simple as that.
      Flaring to land is like this: Pull both brakes, induced drag on both sides makes the chute fall back a bit, that increases pitch angle, just like flaring on any aircraft. The correct timing of the flare is something that might require some practise. But just landing it at 50% brakes, will also work.
