Cheating, bribes, bans, penalties, prison & drivers burning alive.
All were caused by one man.
The man who ultimately got banned from Formula 1 forever.
I don’t think there’s anyone that even comes close to the levels of controversy of this man.
But somehow it took 19 years before he got any real consequences for his actions.
Some people call him the puppet master, the cheater, or the conman.
I’ll let you decide the most fitting name.
This is the entire story of how Flavio Briatore became one of the most impactful, successful, and controversial figures in Formula 1 history…

Few minutes later
Somehow worked in his favour
i wanna say 'except the bit where he was banned from attending any FIA sanctioned event FOR LIFE'..... except that they never enforced it and he has been regularly in the paddock ever since they gave him the ban.
The fact that they allowed Briatore to return after the scandal shows how corrupt F1 and FIA are
That and the fact that they may be threatened that if they press on too much, the man would expose them and that would be the biggest scandal, bigger than Crashgate. Imagine if they ban one man and that person appealed and they had a hard back and forth which ended with that man exposing the entire FIA?
Always have been, bud. 🫡
there is always corruption in every sport, its just more/less exposed every now and then. Also Flavio is very special case because he has money + he has connections. You don't get into positions of power he has, without having both of those.

Flavio is the type of guy to get called to the principals office for punching a kid and would return after 3 mins like nothing happened
totally not. omg. u didnt understand anything :S. retards comment
I think your mother punched you in the head and you became retarded
I always wonder, if Beneton weren't cheating in 94, would Senna be pushing that hard at Imola?
Yeah, that's my question too. I would blame more Benetton than Williams for his death
and no, flavio did not discover Alonso, he had already been driving for Minardi for two seasons, just as Minardi discovered Webber and at least two other future front end drivers.
That iconic *and heavily fined* AustralianGP “post-podium-podium” with Webber is still one of my favorite moments in racing. 😂
From lifetime ban to being the defacto team principal of Alpine F1…
Yep… really effective that ban
Notice how the teams went downhill after Schumacher and alonso left. Shows the quality they both had.
You think it was only the drivers? 😂. They lost most of their development team when Micheal left to Ferrari.. why do you think Ferrari became such a monster. Alonso benefited from the technical success of team from when they were Benetton. It wasn’t just the drivers dude shake your head a bit 😂
@@NoHacksTSR, not just the drivers but they were worthy of builxing a team around them. Byrne and Brawn were in Benetton before Schumacher arrived, they even had Brundle who was Senna's main rival in British F3. But they were just another midfield team before MS. So, it's the root and the cause.
As for Alonso: he still has some lessons to teach even after after 20+ years in F1.
Like these guys or not, they are different from an average.
lol oh hell no
Mclaren & ferrari got better after Alonso left, Ferrari won the championship in 07-08 after schumi retired but I get what you mean they outperform the car
@@tsh847 Bro they were not a mid team, they were finishing 3rd and 4th even before Schumacher. Benetton being a good team is also why Schumacher chose them over Jordan.
The thing about Briatore is that this single incident overshadowed ridiculous career achievements, this guy literally won back to back championships with teams like Benetton and Renault and he was also the one that put Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso in those cars before teams like Ferrari and McLaren did. You can't deny Flavio had charisma like no other in this sport.
That and he may also have a keen eye on raw talent and the ability to hone it for the team.
yes. we know. formula one is ripe with fans who worship cheats.
I see you've not been paying attention.
@@noinfo9130Tell me you’re new to F1 without saying you’re new to F1. 😂
All teams have cheated, that’s how we got to where we are today. And if you think they’re not still cheating; you’re absolutely wrong.
It’s only “cheating” if you get caught. Welcome to Motorsport. 😉
Schumacher's first drive was for Eddie Jordan.
Flavio was the Saul Goodman of the F1 before the Saul Goodman.
So when Alpine starts winning races out of nowhere we know why

Some context, from Willem Toet's LinkedIn.
"The rule makers (FiA) will often make bold and short press announcements such as (1994) - "traction control is banned". The reality is that the teams have to comply with a complex and lengthy set of technical regulations. If you can find a way to improve your car within the letter of those regulations then you're legal even if you have "traction control". F1 has always worked that way and still does today. In 1994 Benetton may have been the first to discover these loopholes but they were not the only ones.
In early 1994 the great Ayrton Senna had to park his Williams car after some problem and chose to stay out on track for a while and watch / listen to the other cars. He noticed the Benetton appear to stutter coming out of the slower corners which he thought must be traction control (it was). But the way Benetton had achieved it was quite legal. So the controversy starts. Williams complain to the press and the FiA. Benetton stay quiet because they don't want to explain how they have done what they have done. Eventually all teams learned what to do to achieve legal (letter of law not intent of law) traction control. That then ended with the introduction of standard engine control units (ECU's)."
Benetton (and other teams) found a LEGAL way to run a type of traction control on their cars in 1994. This video states it was proof they (Benetton) were definitely cheating. That's not entirely correct though is it. What Benetton were doing was within the rules. They were not cheating.
Willem Toet's LinkedIn post: www.linkedin.com/pulse/how-rotational-inertia-led-traction-control-willem-toet
Pretty much it was just FIA calling it a cheat because they never thought someone was brazen enough to take advantage of loopholes. The FIA is so stuck up with their rules that they thought loopholes won't exist and if someone manages to find one and exposes it, they will call it a cheat just to stop others from taking advantage of said loophole than fix the damn rulebook.
Schumacher's 1994 title was a controversial win after Michael collided with Damon Hill. The 1995 title was more legitimate.
94 will always be damon hills first championship handed to someone else to keep a nation happy.
Agreed. I saw it and was shocked. But all he did was exploit the regulations.
'took him 19 years to face any consequences'
hes never faced any real consequences. he left f1 before he was banned, and despite being banned from having anything to do with any FIA sanctioned event is filmed at almost every F1 event and often interviewed on camera at said event.
I've lost all respect for Renault, for bringing this a guy back. Even more so F1 for encouraging it or allowing it.
This is such a well done video. Love him or hate him, Flavio is one of F1’s off-track icons, forever.
Honestly, with where the sport has gone, and where it seems to be heading… I’m happy to hear him back around F1, and would love to see him taking on a more hands-on role.
I read an interview with the engineer Willem Toet you mentioned. Apart from the launch control and traction control thing he said they also worked out how to intercept the start light sequence and control it, so they could let their drivers know a split second before they went out. Dirty, I know, but also quite clever in a way.
Nothing wrong with trying new ideas that have not been legislated for yet. It isn't all about the drivers by any means.

Great video small nitpick though the 1985 season only had 16 rounds not 20 and the TG185 only entered 10 for Fabi as he got his car at Monaco and Ghinzani only got 6 rounds as he got his at Austria.

God forbid Andretti F1 get they might do something that would embarrass F1. It’s 2024 and Flavio Briatore is back in the paddock
American racing fan here. And as someone who enjoys all forms of motorsport, I can speak on behalf of the NASCAR fans when I say: "Smokey" Yunick and Junior Johnson would watch this and say "Thats cute... hold my dip can...". :)
The only difference is NASCAR drivers and team owners grifted for peanuts. Flavio, Bernie, and others did it for millions and millions of dollars. They’re on a whole other level than Junior Johnson and the like.
Bro got so much charisma. His wife is 30 years younger and F1 rules doesnt apply to him 😂
He's a fraud and a hypocrite.
Maybe so. But successful in a cutthroat sport/industry.
the punish was not so severe because the "cheating" was not quite cheating (until crashgate). was exactly bending de rules, sometimes more than others. if you dont know the history of F1, a lot of teams bended the rules every season. that's how innovation works. exploiting the grey area. or maybe all the "cheating" of brabham murray and ecclestone of early '80 was at the same level as flavio? :)
Why are all sports federations, especially those beginning with F (FIFA, FIA, FIBA, etc), so damn corrupt?
🤨 banned for life wasn't he? he's been back in F1 for a while,

Sorry, but we're already getting an idea of what I'd be like. Look at Roger Penske - owner of IMS ( Indianapolis Motor Speedway), an Indy car owner with multiple teams, owner of multiple tracks that the cars race on AND, last but not least,.... OWNER OF THE DAMN INDY CAR SERIES !
Roger, of course, has recently made some race changes to some of the races to benefit HIS teams!
Next, you have the France family , owner of NASCAR. They just recently voted that IT'S APPROPRIATE FOR THEM to OWN RACE TEAM/TEAMS....IN NASCAR?

Once you’ve spent some time learning the history of his tenure, you’ll agree.

He is still fernandos manager and flavio is Godfather for Fernando
Is it against the rules to crash your car? Sorry, other than the safety aspect obviously there can't be a rule against "not crashing". Just one step ahead of the rule makers.
Flavio's partner in crime, Pat Symonds, also got a life-time F1 ban and was later welcomed back into the fold as CTO of the FIA, now he's a chief advisor for Andretti?

But hey, this is Formula 1, so we better put some respect to their names praise them as the "miracle workers" they are. If any one can bring the clown show that is Alpine f1 back to the top of the pile then it has to be Flavio. His first deed was to sack Famin and if the Renault engines won't cut it, then he'll look elsewhere, Luca de Meo and Renault be damned! 😂

Thanks mate, happy you liked it ❤️
All because F1 does not want to Andretti racing and Cadillac in F1. Why, they all know what HASS is lacking and what Andretti brings. Hell Toto knows Cadillac is a direct competitor in the US market with Merc, especially with African Americans. Hamilton was the poster guy, and we all know this. Toto has fought the Cadillac entrance tooth and nail. Folks it is all about business in the end. Flavio is a crook and should be tread as one, but the FIA is spinless and money driven as well. If I were the USASC and IMSA senior leadership I would not let any European company race in the USA, with that comes reciprocity but America is a bigger market and can withstand any European shit. Toyota is ok as well as Flavio, but Cadillac is not!!!
He won titles fair and square.
Current Alpine management won nothing. Netflix clown Steiner won nothing.

fun fact, the only reason there has ever been any female drivers in F1 was because they were sleeping with Flavio, not because they were able to handle the car.
This year alpine is looking like a different team...
Fernando Alonso making this man his manager has not done Fernando any good
A lot depends upon how you interpret the regulations. There are always loopholes, just find and exploit them !!! That is not cheating. Blame the rule writers.
It's all about money and egos. So, nothing surprises me when it comes to F1. I'm acutally surprised there's not more controversial figures in the 'sport'.

So where is the controversy?
Shameful thumbnail and title. Briatore was no worse than the rest of them. Want to have a discussion about Spygate and Liegate (McLaren)? Ferrari's "glory" years (jerez 97, their get other people's technology banned tactic in 98, winning in the pit lane, illegal barge boards to win the 99 championship, parking at monaco, the tyre protest in 2003, montoya's ridiculous penalty at indy 2003, schumacher getting outside assitance at the nurburgring when he should've been dsq'd - also 2003). Flavio and Ron were singled out because they weren't friends of Max, so they bore the brunt of things. Want to have a discussion about how often in 2010-13 the Toro Rossos caused incidents or chose not to defend against Seb Vettel so that he could get by (most ridiculously at Abu Dhabi in 2012)?
