Well, Alexander mentioned cutting 0.5MM from the shaft so I suppose he means that they just have the piston lower in the body of the shock. Since the body is sort of a valve, it must maximize the use of that setup. He did mention running standard springs in the rear so that may confirm your suspicion about what end of the car to best apply these.
