Dawn French Has No Shame - Here's Why You Shouldn't Either

  • Perfection has taken on a life of its own in recent years. Dawn French worries that the pursuit of perfection is stopping us from being who we are, and from making mistakes we can grow from.
In this chat, Fearne and Dawn explore why when we have low tolerance for others making mistakes, we’re likely judging ourselves for our mistakes too. So, in order to have more self-compassion, we have to talk about the cringey times we’ve held inside for fear for being shamed.
They also discuss the best ways to apologise when we’re in the wrong, and to allow space for robust debate that might just change our minds. Plus, why it’s so important to be able to say “I don’t know”.
Dawn’s book, The Twat Files, is out now.
    ABOUT HAPPY PLACE

As a child, my father said to me "never be afraid to say, you don't know, or don't understand" he told me, it was far easier to say that, than it was to pretend to know and look a fool when it was so apparent that you did not know.

25:24 what mistakes has JK actually made? It would be nice to actually have a robust conversation instead of just endlessly talking about having robust conversations.

Exactly. Dawn is really just sitting on the fence here, a bit like Graham Norton saying that Rowling's speech on gender identity ideology was 'problematic', without actually explaining why.

I think maybe the topic was too big to include in this video? The main discussion was about making mistakes, owning them, not being ashamed, apologising and forgiveness. The trans issue, although touched upon, would have taken over the whole thing I think, if they'd gone down that route?

  • @vickyjones9253
    @vickyjones9253 20 дней назад +26

I really loved this conversation - a meeting of the minds of 2 inspiring, warm and empathetic women. I really appreciated the discussion about the culture we now find ourselves in and resisting dominant narratives. I totally agree that we should be receptive to owning our mistakes, apologise - but I also think it's OK to not take on everyone's critique or correction of our behaviour as 'wrong' as fact. It's OK to appreciate the other person's perspective but kindly hold firm to our own. And agree to disagree

Being a younger person who would have been telling Dawn to catch up, you grow a bit older and learn more about the world and then start to realise that those people who seemed out dated in perspective actually have a wise reason for their mindset. Every generation wants to change everything, but not all change turns out to be what’s best.

Oh Dawn, you don't need to 'catch up'. You know what you think, and you're not making mistakes but SAY IT!! Be direct, and claim that courage that otherwise makes you the coward you don't want to be. Unless all us women do, it's left to the few brave heroines like JKR, Kellie-Jay Keen, Helen Joyce....
Also, what mistake(s) did JK make?

    • @lemonjelly625

I have listened to just the first 16 mins of this podcast for the very first time, and it is striking such a significant chord with the way I feel life and humans have become more divided, than more connected and open to others thoughts through listening and processing, than the single-minded, entitled viewpoints of having to be right. I applaud and champion this openness of conversation, and wish that there was more of it in the mainstream.

It irritates me how polished everything is supposed to be straight out of the gate and that noone gets an allowance for making a mistake, even though everyone is making mistakes all of the time. My depression, ocd, and anxiety really holds me back in everyday life, and it's only in recent years that i have realised all these things combined have affected me for 30 years in all areas throughout my life. I feel like i can't take risks in case something happens, so i do nothing, and everything i do i seem to fail at. But i carry on regardless. You will get through whatever it is that is holding you back, and overcome it, bit by bit. ;-)

The topic of forgiveness I found particularly interesting. Whilst I can acknowledge the power of forgiving someone something, there are times and instances where forgiveness is not possible, no matter how huge the returns would be. You can just choose to eliminate that person from you life and move on. The key to this is to leave any baggage relating to them, with them. I'm not lugging that around!

This was such a thought provoking interview. I could have listened to you both for hours. I have got to the point now where I won't share thoughts and opinions on social media. I shared some thoughts preciously and was persecuted for want of a better word. How dare I say what I said. After that I gave up offering opinions. I wasn't being offensive or forcing my opinions on everyone else. I just said what I personally thought but the comments I received in reply made me distressed to the point I took my comments off social media. It seems to me you can't have an opinion of your own anymore. If you don't agree with the majority you are forced to keep your mouth shut and say nothing. I do feel like free speach has gone out of the window as well as the right to hold different opinions to every one else. Why can't we debate? Why can't people be accepted for having a different opinion to everyone else? If we were all the same life would be very dull. Your conversation really resonated because you expressed everything I feel. You do feel forced to have a certain opinion even if that isn't what you truly believe. Not only that like Dawn said you do feel like your thoughts, opinions, experiences etc. don't matter. It is a case of keep quiet and stand in the corner. I think this situation will only get worse and that is a very sad thing. If I as an adult feel constricted and restricted imagine how the younger generation feels. I feel it is safer to stay silent unless you want to risk confrontation and unpleasantness. Thank you for raising all these points.

I feel like a lone voice here, but as someone who believes in intersectional feminism, I feel so upset for trans women, & trans people in general. I consider that they are so misunderstood & marginalised still, as a group who have long been excluded, had their existence denied & lived experience misinterpreted & misrepresented. I think there must be solutions to keep all women & girls safe including trans women & girls. We need to broaden our understanding. I don't like the way JK treats trans women.

Disagree with the video title advice.
I suffered from dibilitating shame for decades. All sorted a number of years ago.
For me, the problem is not shame, but dysfunctonal shame.
Healthy shame, is a built-in morals warning system, letting the person know they've done something wrong that violates one's moral code of conduct.
Dysunctional shame is grossly disproportionate to the event, and feeds self-condemnation.
I appreciate my beneficial shame system that I developed by healing the wounds and dysfunctions that causes dysfunctional shame.

Please know that most sensible women are with JK Rowling. We have sympathy for the very rare people that have true gender dysphoria. Trans Ideology is …. an ideology; faith based, illogical. Dawn, be even braver and stand with us.

@24:12 May I suggest the essay ¨The Witch Trials of JK Rowling" by Contrapoints? In nearly two hours she explains quite beautifully the bigger context of both women's backgrounds, what is specious about the arguments made and even the title. I think you might like it. Thanks for this wondeful chat.

I used to quite like Dawn French however her massive jump onto the woke bandwagon and her very mean verbal bullying toward anyone who disagreed or questioned was very deflating toward my enjoyment of her work. Sad. I remember when we could enjoy actors without having thier political views shoved at us!

I think you can have questions about gender but surely calling a trans person a man when they want to live their life as a woman , is unkind. And you don’t need to be a genius or an expert to know that.

Men can't be women. Expecting people to lie for the feelings of other women is generally unhealthy for individuals and society.

Being cruel to be kind used to be accepted as actual kindness in responding truthfully to something. Affirming someone’s delusion is unkind, trying to make people pretend they see a woman when a man is in lipstick is unkind. Only females can experience life as women. Life isn’t kind all the time and yet we survive the many, many unkindnesses

Lying to people is unkind, lying to children in particular and allowing them to believe they might have been born in the wrong body is beyond unkind...it is a despicable lie and all of you who applaud it should be ashamed.

JK Rowling has not paid a huge price. She is still exceptionally wealthy and she still has multiple platforms (including writing her own books) in which she can display her opinion. You aren't owed an audience. People are allowed to decide for themselves if they want to continue agreeing with you or they want to give you anymore attention, especially if they think your opinion is damaging to society in some way. If you still have a platform, you aren't being cancelled. The idea that people are being unfair to JK Rowling by stating their opinions about her opinion is just so entitled - the people complaining about 'cancel culture' are so entitled.

    • @JB-qf5ep

@@BubbleMix-96 Projection? That doesn't make sense because I am not claiming that I am entitled to an audience's attention either, but people like Dawn French thinks I have to like JK Rowling until I die because I enjoyed reading Harry Potter as a child. How am I being entitled and they are not?
Nobody is owed an audience, but the 'everyone is getting cancelled' crowd are pretending that some entertainers are entitled to your admiration and attention, because they are complaining about audiences changing their mind about their support. Bo Burnham had it right when he said 'If I stop entertaining you, throw me to the curb. I work in the service industry, I'm just overpaid'. He understands that audiences aren't wrong to divert their attention elsewhere for any reason. So what on earth are you talking about?
Ah I get it. You just want to defend Rowling by saying anything, even if it doesn't make sense, because you like that she is transphobic. It is amazing that even with a comment that made very little sense, you managed to reveal what kind of person you are. Yikes.
