Dawn French Has No Shame - Here's Why You Shouldn't Either

  • Perfection has taken on a life of its own in recent years. Dawn French worries that the pursuit of perfection is stopping us from being who we are, and from making mistakes we can grow from.
In this chat, Fearne and Dawn explore why when we have low tolerance for others making mistakes, we’re likely judging ourselves for our mistakes too. So, in order to have more self-compassion, we have to talk about the cringey times we’ve held inside for fear for being shamed.
They also discuss the best ways to apologise when we’re in the wrong, and to allow space for robust debate that might just change our minds. Plus, why it’s so important to be able to say “I don’t know”.
Dawn’s book, The Twat Files, is out now.

I have listened to just the first 16 mins of this podcast for the very first time, and it is striking such a significant chord with the way I feel life and humans have become more divided, than more connected and open to others thoughts through listening and processing, than the single-minded, entitled viewpoints of having to be right. I applaud and champion this openness of conversation, and wish that there was more of it in the mainstream.

Days after the election in America 2024 I grapple not just with the general state of the world, but people around me who either dismiss the needs, rights and lives of others around us, or they have just given up. Anger and disappointment are palpable and forgiveness is difficult, especially when people don't own their mistakes. I choose to live in an uncomfortable, weird ,quirky world. I speak out when others either don't or are afraid to, a lonely place to be sure. I appreciate, in the least, the validation of living in this imperfect word. As a spiritual person, I believe messages are given when needed and I needed to hear this :).

I really loved this conversation - a meeting of the minds of 2 inspiring, warm and empathetic women. I really appreciated the discussion about the culture we now find ourselves in and resisting dominant narratives. I totally agree that we should be receptive to owning our mistakes, apologise - but I also think it's OK to not take on everyone's critique or correction of our behaviour as 'wrong' as fact. It's OK to appreciate the other person's perspective but kindly hold firm to our own. And agree to disagree

Being a younger person who would have been telling Dawn to catch up, you grow a bit older and learn more about the world and then start to realise that those people who seemed out dated in perspective actually have a wise reason for their mindset. My depression, ocd, and anxiety really holds me back in everyday life, and it's only in recent years that i have realised all these things combined have affected me for 30 years in all areas throughout my life. I feel like i can't take risks in case something happens, so i do nothing, and everything i do i seem to fail at. But i carry on regardless. It irritates me how polished everything is supposed to be straight out of the gate and that noone gets an allowance for making a mistake, even though everyone is making mistakes all of the time. The topic of forgiveness I found particularly interesting. Whilst I can acknowledge the power of forgiving someone something, there are times and instances where forgiveness is not possible, no matter how huge the returns would be. You can just choose to eliminate that person from you life and move on. The key to this is to leave any baggage relating to them, with them. I'm not lugging that around!

This was such a thought provoking interview. I could have listened to you both for hours. I have got to the point now where I won't share thoughts and opinions on social media. I shared some thoughts preciously and was persecuted for want of a better word. How dare I say what I said. After that I gave up offering opinions. I wasn't being offensive or forcing my opinions on everyone else. I just said what I personally thought but the comments I received in reply made me distressed to the point I took my comments off social media. It seems to me you can't have an opinion of your own anymore. If you don't agree with the majority you are forced to keep your mouth shut and say nothing. I do feel like free speach has gone out of the window as well as the right to hold different opinions to every one else. Why can't we debate? Why can't people be accepted for having a different opinion to everyone else? If we were all the same life would be very dull. Your conversation really resonated because you expressed everything I feel. You do feel forced to have a certain opinion even if that isn't what you truly believe. Not only that like Dawn said you do feel like your thoughts, opinions, experiences etc. don't matter. It is a case of keep quiet and stand in the corner. I think this situation will only get worse and that is a very sad thing. If I as an adult feel constricted and restricted imagine how the younger generation feels. I feel it is safer to stay silent unless you want to risk confrontation and unpleasantness. Thank you for raising all these points.

Jk Rowling is completely right from what I've heard from her. She is speaking from the experience of a child who was sexually abused and with the result had body dismorphia. She knows this happens to autistic girls and they having been molested Political will not take that much grooming to jump onto the trans wagon. This is because she cares that she says it not because of hatred towards a genuine case of a wrong outside body for someone with a very different internal body.

im so glad ive supported the French and Saunders franchise since the 2000's from Ab Fab, vicar of dib to French and Saunders I love the quirks and odd moments shown, it made it feel more real and relatable compared to the reality tat that is aired these days. so much of it is copied and paste and fake and robotic and very dictated on non-existent etiquette to the point of suffocation no wonder there's so much despair in the world these days. love dawn with all my comedic heart, an amazing interview

Please know that most sensible women are with JK Rowling. We have sympathy for the very rare people that have true gender dysphoria. Trans Ideology is …. an ideology; faith based, illogical. Dawn, be even braver and stand with us.

I feel like a lone voice here, but as someone who believes in intersectional feminism, I feel so upset for trans women, & trans people in general. I consider that they are so misunderstood & marginalised still, as a group who have long been excluded, had their existence denied & lived experience misinterpreted & misrepresented. I think there must be solutions to keep all women & girls safe including trans women & girls. We need to broaden our understanding. I don't like the way JK treats trans women.

Sad. I remember when we could enjoy actors without having thier political views shoved at us!

@24:12 May I suggest the essay ¨The Witch Trials of JK Rowling" by Contrapoints? In nearly two hours she explains quite beautifully the bigger context of both women's backgrounds, what is specious about the arguments made and even the title. I think you might like it. Thanks for this wondeful chat.

Robust debate is all very well, but only with logical, not fanatical others. Robust debate also gets you nowhere when you’re being physically attacked by fanatics

    • @upendasana7857
      @upendasana7857 4 месяца назад +2

what "fanatics"were you attacked by then ? and also whose to say you are logical and they were fanatics..maybe your debate wasn't that logical or robust and maybe you're the fanatic"...people who think they're always being logical and clear minded are usually not....you are just stuck in your own sense of "rightness"too.
Also no there is no point arguing or debating with people who are completely unwilling or have done absolutely no work, research or clear thinking on their point but just come with reactions and opinions brarly thought about.
