Dawn French Has No Shame - Here's Why You Shouldn't Either

- Perfection has taken on a life of its own in recent years. Dawn French worries that the pursuit of perfection is stopping us from being who we are, and from making mistakes we can grow from.
In this chat, Fearne and Dawn explore why when we have low tolerance for others making mistakes, we’re likely judging ourselves for our mistakes too. So, in order to have more self-compassion, we have to talk about the cringey times we’ve held inside for fear for being shamed.
They also discuss the best ways to apologise when we’re in the wrong, and to allow space for robust debate that might just change our minds. Plus, why it’s so important to be able to say “I don’t know”.
Dawn’s book, The Twat Files, is out now.

Dawn French was the first guest Fearne interviewed for Happy Place back in 2018, we're so thrilled to have her back for a second time 💛
And it would be amazing if u read that out on your next podcast so we can actually have someone that doesn't benefit the medias agenda actually have a platform to talk for a change
George harrisons of the beatles last words to the world were to 'be kind to eachother' all John and ringo ever wanted was peace and love amongst humans, theyve all done some much for us, from entertaining us, inspriring us, given us beautiful memories, changing music, to flat out improving the British economy to the standards of america n we cant even try to be kind to eachhother as a thank you to them..georges guitar would be weeping now more than ever. N yh we argue bk, but only when we have to defend ourselves, most of us really dont like attention, we just wanna live our lives in peace. LET Us
@@jadebel7006that’s funny, your comment above didn’t sound too kind…
Lovely woman dawn
Dawn and Fearne are just wonderful people.
Dawn is, but Fearne? She knew about Ian Watkins so..
@@EllaJayand how many knew about jimmy saville, rolf Harris, Gary glitter and all the royals, celebrities still doing it now…
I long to hear people say “ I don’t know” instead of pretending to know everything.
As a child, my father said to me "never be afraid to say, you don't know, or don't understand" he told me, it was far easier to say that, than it was to pretend to know and look a fool when it was so apparent that you did not know.
👏👏👏👏
I've had an extremely soft spot for Ms. Dawn French since I was a child thanks to the Vicar of Dibley. She is genuinely a breath of fresh air ❤❤
I have listened to just the first 16 mins of this podcast for the very first time, and it is striking such a significant chord with the way I feel life and humans have become more divided, than more connected and open to others thoughts through listening and processing, than the single-minded, entitled viewpoints of having to be right. I applaud and champion this openness of conversation, and wish that there was more of it in the mainstream.
we aren't divided, just wrong people have more power
It’s by design, religion, race, gender, sexuality are all being used to divide.
Days after the election in America 2024 I grapple not just with the general state of the world, but people around me who either dismiss the needs, rights and lives of others around us, or they have just given up. Anger and disappointment are palpable and forgiveness is difficult, especially when people don't own their mistakes. I choose to live in an uncomfortable, weird ,quirky world. I speak out when others either don't or are afraid to, a lonely place to be sure. I appreciate, in the least, the validation of living in this imperfect word. As a spiritual person, I believe messages are given when needed and I needed to hear this :).
So many things that needed to be said. I only wish the entire world could take some of this to heart and consider each other more when communicating.
Thank you so much both of you for a great discussion
Thank you for sharing this, lovely listen. Started to cry when you talked about 'shame' . Its the most dangerous human emotion regarding mental health, goes straight to our survival needs and impact of exclusión and not belonging with a tribe.
Shame is very healthy
I really loved this conversation - a meeting of the minds of 2 inspiring, warm and empathetic women. I really appreciated the discussion about the culture we now find ourselves in and resisting dominant narratives. I totally agree that we should be receptive to owning our mistakes, apologise - but I also think it's OK to not take on everyone's critique or correction of our behaviour as 'wrong' as fact. It's OK to appreciate the other person's perspective but kindly hold firm to our own. And agree to disagree
What a brilliant, revelatory conversation. Thank you Dawn and Fearne
Every word spoken by these two, makes perfect sense and is so reassuring! I couldn't agree more with all that was said. 👍
What a legend, your very first guest all those years ago. Her book is fantastic
Being a younger person who would have been telling Dawn to catch up, you grow a bit older and learn more about the world and then start to realise that those people who seemed out dated in perspective actually have a wise reason for their mindset. Every generation wants to change everything, but not all change turns out to be what’s best.
Indeed . I’m a bit further down the journey than uou . I e realised sometimes it’s because we don’t care that much about catching up . Come to realise maybe that some things just aren’t that important 😊
❤
I so agree with Dawn French about the current culture of intolerance. Really enjoyed this discussion
And disrespect. I guess it is to do with the lack of respect
Learning from our mistakes. Even better if you can learn from someone else's mistakes 😊
Loved listening to you guys, Dawn makes so much sense you definitely touched a nerve in me. Thank you 🙏🏼 keep them coming Fearne you are such an inspiration to me ❤
Captivated within first few minutes. Both great & talk so much sense. 😀
I worked on Celebrity Juice for one series. Holly was rude. Fearne wasn’t rude but she wasn’t friendly either.
Oh my goodness! Sense at last, compassionate insight, real, honest. Felt like I was sitting with amazing friends watching this. Thank you ladies . ❤
I hope this gets a million listens because ppl really need to hear this message❤
Thank you, for such a great discussion! At the end I laughed so hard I scared my cat right out of the room! 🤣
How wonderful to share this conversation, the fabulous Dawn & Ferne. Love your conversations. Thank you. 💖🏴
Aw! I’m so happy!!! Cried every type of tears watching this little gem! Both of you had me mesmerized and in awe with the self awareness and honesty. Can’t love this anymore than I already do.
Dawn & Fearne Are Samples Of Strong Women 💪 Love It.
Being honest now, im recieving nhs home community care . Everything that Fearne and Dawn Are Talking About - The Home Community Nurse Encourages Which - In My Case Is Regaining The Courage To Over-Come The Fear Of Going Outdoor's With Self Confidence Again. Thankyou so much for sharing this. ( sent from Liverpool UK
I hope you are able to get the confidence to go outside again. I definitely have experienced that (& still do) so i know how that feels. My depression, ocd, and anxiety really holds me back in everyday life, and it's only in recent years that i have realised all these things combined have affected me for 30 years in all areas throughout my life. I feel like i can't take risks in case something happens, so i do nothing, and everything i do i seem to fail at. But i carry on regardless. You will get through whatever it is that is holding you back, and overcome it, bit by bit. ;-)
Determination is key in getting out again. It's only fear that is stopping you. Fear is only your ego. It's not real.
Thank you! So brave to talk about J K Rawling!
Isn't it awful to be considered 'brave' to talk about JKR? Insane times. Dawn French getting backlash and trolled for it, but she's standing firm. Adds to my admiration of JKR's bravery for publically standing up to the mob with logical, class, sanity.
It's a pitty that she didn't elaborate on what mistakes she thinks Rowling has made, because 'none' is the only rational answer when it comes to her speaking out against gender identity ideology and its vicious proponents.
Jk Rowling is right…end of. Be brave enough to say it don’t bother tip toeing round it, that’s weak.
They didn’t even dare say ‘trans’ or ‘gender’. An anti-cancellation message delivered with a whisper rather than the chest.
LOverly chat. Seeing dawn on the telly in the 80s is my happiest childhood memory.
I’m so glad I came across this! It resonated so much with me. Dawn is just fabulous.
A beautiful conversation between two beautiful people

Absolutely fantastic podcast , love Dawn and everything you both have said really resonates, thank you so much
This just trily felt like two friends i practically know ! Well done lovely ladies
O Bless you Both for being so Beautiful and Totally Honest about How the World functions today , Thankyou So Much Fearne and Dawn, your both my New Best Friends . Love you Both Billionssssss❤❤❤❤❤❤
Life is about getting messy, making mistakes, learning and developing. It irritates me how polished everything is supposed to be straight out of the gate and that noone gets an allowance for making a mistake, even though everyone is making mistakes all of the time. We have to stop kidding ourselves that life is like an Instagram filter and we need to be more tolerant and nicer to people. The world has become a very aggressive place. :/
How many of us are haunted by our twatery in the past? The sudden recollection followed by the guttural 'oh no' reaction?😂😂😂
I’d be astounded if someone truthfully isn’t haunted by anything in their life.
I love JK Rowling!! So glad they spoke about how brilliant she is
Except for the fact that Dawn said Rowling has 'made mistakes', without actualy saying what those mistakes are.
Rowling has simply stated the truth about biology. That's not a mistake. It's vital that people speak the truth.
I just simply adore Dawn French.
Me too,just love her ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
What a wonderfull, funny intelligent exchange👏❤️…. Loved the first one too…. THIRD TIME PLEASE?💐🌹
Oh Dawn, you don't need to 'catch up'. You know what you think, and you're not making mistakes but SAY IT!! Be direct, and claim that courage that otherwise makes you the coward you don't want to be. Unless all us women do, it's left to the few brave heroines like JKR, Kellie-Jay Keen, Helen Joyce....
Also, what mistake(s) did JK make?
I agree, a lot of this with JK comes from brainwashing in schools and msm. A woman is a woman. No catching up required. Also, I agree with Dawn and Fearn - genuine grown up debate has all but disappeared. 😢
JK Rowling has been very openly and aggressively transphobic in recent years
The topic of forgiveness I found particularly interesting. Whilst I can acknowledge the power of forgiving someone something, there are times and instances where forgiveness is not possible, no matter how huge the returns would be. You can just choose to eliminate that person from you life and move on. The key to this is to leave any baggage relating to them, with them. I'm not lugging that around!
That's the whole point of forgiveness so you don't lug around Baggage. It is very freeing.
Brilliant chat 👏 loved it 👍
25:24 what mistakes has JK actually made? It would be nice to actually have a robust conversation instead of just endlessly talking about having robust conversations.
Exactly. Dawn is really just sitting on the fence here, a bit like Graham Norton saying that Rowling's speech on gender identity ideology was 'problematic', without actually explaining why.
I think maybe the topic was too big to include in this video? The main discussion was about making mistakes, owning them, not being ashamed, apologising and forgiveness. The trans issue, although touched upon, would have taken over the whole thing I think, if they'd gone down that route?
Should we though? I have no desire or need to 'discuss it'. More attention on the attention seekers.
@@valbonney2575 You’re right it probably would have taken over slightly but that wouldn’t have been a bad thing in my view and would have been entirely relevant to their discussion. Dawn talks about the confusion at being told to simply: “catch up!” instead of having her mistakes explained to her so to then be vague about JK’s “mistakes” in a tone that implies we all just automatically know what they are just makes no sense in the context of the conversation they’re having.
@@feechi8719 Yes, I get what you're saying - in a way, it's almost like WE are being told to "catch up" in the same way that she was!
Exactly, precisely, in a nutshell Dawn nailed it for all the political correctness and wokeism, we are still intolerant
This was such a thought provoking interview. I could have listened to you both for hours. I have got to the point now where I won't share thoughts and opinions on social media. I shared some thoughts preciously and was persecuted for want of a better word. How dare I say what I said. After that I gave up offering opinions. I wasn't being offensive or forcing my opinions on everyone else. I just said what I personally thought but the comments I received in reply made me distressed to the point I took my comments off social media. It seems to me you can't have an opinion of your own anymore. If you don't agree with the majority you are forced to keep your mouth shut and say nothing. I do feel like free speach has gone out of the window as well as the right to hold different opinions to every one else. Why can't we debate? Why can't people be accepted for having a different opinion to everyone else? If we were all the same life would be very dull. Your conversation really resonated because you expressed everything I feel. You do feel forced to have a certain opinion even if that isn't what you truly believe. Not only that like Dawn said you do feel like your thoughts, opinions, experiences etc. don't matter. It is a case of keep quiet and stand in the corner. I think this situation will only get worse and that is a very sad thing. If I as an adult feel constricted and restricted imagine how the younger generation feels. I feel it is safer to stay silent unless you want to risk confrontation and unpleasantness. Thank you for raising all these points.
Human beings aren't a topic for debate..of ur opinions hurt ppl come down of ur pedestal have some human decency n respect that ur hurt ppl..u can think however u want, how u think n what u say are very different things , your mother never taught u if u don't have anything nice to say, say nothing at all?
George harrisons of the beatles last words to the world were to 'be kind to eachother' all John and ringo ever wanted was peace and love amongst humans, theyve all done some much for us, from entertaining us, inspriring us, given us beautiful memories, changing music, to flat out improving the British economy to the standards of america n we cant even try to be kind to eachhother as a thank you to them..georges guitar would be weeping now more than ever. Someone's swallowed the koolaid and the straw.
I worked on set with her at the BBC in the 90’s .. She was VILE !! Quite a few people on that set said before I even met her the best part Dawn French ever plays is the part where she pretends to be nice on the screen
I’ve heard she can be rude and unfriendly, but vile!!! Any examples? I’m genuinely interested.
Oh dear, not the jolly plump droll lovable figure we all wanted for an auntie then.
Digital Spy used to have a thread “Nice and Nasty Celebrities You Have Met” ( maybe still there). DF turned up a lot ( in the latter list)- as did her ex.
I'm not surprised at all.
@@claresherman2278I can see her ex is up there 😂
We need far more JK Rowlings. Right now she comes across as the only sane, truthful, clear, honest talking sane woman out there. She is a strong woman in an increasingly weak minded world. (Getting her on the podcast would be phenomenal!) x
I whole heartedly support JK. I don’t care about the backlash, because the few are not going to tell me that I should buy into this whole delusion that because a man has an operation, they are then a woman. Problem is, people are too frightened to go against the majority. People get offended, but what happens when you’re offended, oh yeah, nothing.
She’s so brave, I adore her courage to stand up and speak her mind in a world where women are still told to sit down and be quiet.
Keep standing up JK! Never let anyone silence your truth!
She's not the only one ... may I suggest you have a listen to Andrew Gold's 'Heretics' podcasts (videos available on RUclips), where he interviews a number of other intelligent, sane, truthful and clear-talking women (and some men) on this topic. It's encouraging!
@@ladeanbartlett2530Correctness is the opposite of political correctness. Things like changing a life drastically is not something to be shrugged off. Jk Rowling is completely right from what I've heard from her. She is speaking from the experience of a child who was sexually abused and with the result had body dismorphia. She knows this happens to autistic girls and they having been molested Political will not take that much grooming to jump onto the trans wagon. This is because she cares that she says it not because of hatred towards a genuine case of a wrong outside body for someone with a very different internal body.
correctness is the enemy of democracy. Bearocracy caused children to go to school and lose their genius by aged ten.
I don't think posting all day every day about one topic could be regarded as "sane"
I go by my day pretending that i don't know. It feels better 😌, peeps get to relax more with this.
Public confessions! What a trip!! Maybe we need a "driving code" for human conduct???
Intention is everything, im learning to trust that before I allow anyone to shame my opinions or actions. Its my best defence against the modern day Karen. I loved this podcast, thank you
One of the best interviews I've ever watched
So refreshing, thank you.
Yes Cotton, how would you have got here without old grandad, soft southern girl, with family induced opportunities, up north we use natural talent.
This is the best interview love Dawn french even more ❤️ ♥️
Really enjoyed this educational video ❤
I've a feeling at lot of this is women being shut up about the trans issue and are afraid to talk about it.
Yip. Spit it out ladies. You are also big enough to help out!
Cowardly to not support women like JK Rowling!!! I hope Dawn in talking about wanting to support JK. I truly amazing woman
so much for tolerance huh...not everyone agrees with her but still doesn't mean they have discount her completely.Just because you don't agree with her doesn't make you a coward.TOLERANCE
I love dawn she’s a woman I’d absolutely love to be around me my family my kids this is what we need more of ❤️
What a wise old bird. We are the better for her. ❤❤❤
How wonderful this is to see.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Love Dawn how does she manage to have such thick hair at her age the same as she did in her 20s❤
Brilliant ❤
Contrapoints did a couple deep dives on JK Rowling's. I definitely have loads more to learn, but it helped me understand a ton!
Yes - interesting to hear about her experience with the witch trial podcast too as it does somewhat counter the idea that it was a balanced take
Love love love Dawn. Voice of reason ❤
If you say I don't know to someone brow beating you about your opinions it allows them to describe the issue. Unfortunately we may find that they do not have their own view, just recant a dogma they once heard.
Love Dawn ❤
Na don’t listen to young people. Today’s young people have been mentally captured. Don’t let them gaslight you Dawn.
Fantastic such a beautiful person!
Oh I love her!
im so glad ive supported the French and Saunders franchise since the 2000's from Ab Fab, vicar of dib to French and Saunders I love the quirks and odd moments shown, it made it feel more real and relatable compared to the reality tat that is aired these days. so much of it is copied and paste and fake and robotic and very dictated on non-existent etiquette to the point of suffocation no wonder there's so much despair in the world these days. love dawn with all my comedic heart, an amazing interview
Dawn French very funny lady, imagine being married to Lenny Henry must have been absolute torture.Strong lady..
Please know that most sensible women are with JK Rowling. We have sympathy for the very rare people that have true gender dysphoria. Trans Ideology is …. an ideology; faith based, illogical. Dawn, be even braver and stand with us.
I’m an extremely sensible woman. I’m also not a narrow minded bigot.I am NOT with JK Rowling.
great podcast as brilliant finish... 😂
Does anyone know where I can find the podcast with JK Rowling that was mentioned please?
It's called The Witch Trials of J.K. Rowling, it's on youtube, apple or spotify
@@feechi8719 ❤️
I feel like a lone voice here, but as someone who believes in intersectional feminism, I feel so upset for trans women, & trans people in general. I consider that they are so misunderstood & marginalised still, as a group who have long been excluded, had their existence denied & lived experience misinterpreted & misrepresented. I think there must be solutions to keep all women & girls safe including trans women & girls. We need to broaden our understanding. I don't like the way JK treats trans women.
They are men
How does she "treat trans women"? And what exactly do you consider to be a "trans woman"?
yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes and blummin yes !
JK is amazing and I stand with her all the way!
I used to quite like Dawn French however her massive jump onto the woke bandwagon and her very mean verbal bullying toward anyone who disagreed or questioned was very deflating toward my enjoyment of her work. Sad. I remember when we could enjoy actors without having thier political views shoved at us!
@24:12 May I suggest the essay ¨The Witch Trials of JK Rowling" by Contrapoints? In nearly two hours she explains quite beautifully the bigger context of both women's backgrounds, what is specious about the arguments made and even the title. I think you might like it. Thanks for this wondeful chat.
As much as I appreciate your approach to civil conversation…. Contrapoints is quite foolish

Robust debate is all very well, but only with logical, not fanatical others. Robust debate also gets you nowhere when you’re being physically attacked by fanatics
what "fanatics"were you attacked by then ? and also whose to say you are logical and they were fanatics..maybe your debate wasn't that logical or robust and maybe you're the fanatic"...people who think they're always being logical and clear minded are usually not....you are just stuck in your own sense of "rightness"too.
Also no there is no point arguing or debating with people who are completely unwilling or have done absolutely no work, research or clear thinking on their point but just come with reactions and opinions brarly thought about.
🐑 totally I feel bad for jojo too
