I remember my mum found this at a garage sale for $10, it was complete aside from his blaster and axe plus a few scratches, it's such a great figure

The robot mode is truly kickass. I have the Hasbro MP-01 from many years ago. Still love it.

I really like mine, but I don't have him holding the plastic guns which I
think look tacky. Instead mine is holding a fender stratocaster, a
very detailed miniature model I picked up at a market.. which by chance
happens to be the perfect size. Magnus grips the guitar by the neck
with his hands and it looks like he's playing! that's my centerpiece!

That MP-01 design was truly a marvel of engineering, especially for the time. I loved it so much that I bought the Takara one first, and then the Hasbro version (with the crappy battle damage and stubby smoke stacks) just so that I could have a pristine one for the shelf, and a second one to play with. I can tell by how much you love it too. This is the most giddy and gushy review you've given in a while.

I started my collection 2 years ago when I discovered MP-01 on ebay. I bought him and he is the Last Shot MP-01L. I also then bought MP-01B. Then I bought their respective trailers. Still don't have this Magnus. Hoping to find him, and MP-04S Sleep Mode, for a good price
I have MP-01Optimus Prime(The Hasbro Verssion) And the one MAJOR I have with it? The CHEST WINDOWS. CANNOT. CLOSE.TOGETHER.
The best pose for this figure is the one from Transformers Vol. 2 #6 where he's holding the ion gun after shooting Shockwave.
Someone should come out with a car carried mod that will make this Ultra Magnus be similar to the old 80s toy. That's be so cool.

The original toy was a recolour of Optimus with the trailer being "power armour" of sorts. The cab was actually Magnus, but him combined with the trailer and with all the armour pieces on was like a power up mode, but it's the power up mode that they went with for animation to further differentiate him from Prime. So, the initial Masterpiece followed a similar design ethic where he was a white recolour of Prime with armour to put on. It's also worth noting that in the comics published by Dreamwave around the time this figure was released, Ultra Magnus looked exactly like this in that comic. Plus, the MP line was a fledgling product that the budget was somewhat limited for, so repainting Optimus as Magnus was the best way to do it when the line was new and they had limited resources, finances and technology for other characters
