    Natural environment is a total misnomer! You say, "We want to take DTT and give it legs" (i.e. generalization in natural environment). The fact is there is NOTHING absolutely nada about addressing the core deficits with children with ASD by inputting splintered or isolated "skills" (beginning with DTT and then Natural Environment. Moreover, the latter hold true with typical developing and especially non-typical developing toddlers and older with ASD. . The primary core deficits with children with ASD and related challenges is the child's arousal state; being able calm and take in the world; being able integrate simple affect sensory motor planning and sequencing with the use of child initiated affect facial and bodily gestural reciprocity, which is the beginning of true (not imparted) spontaneous relating and engaging . We do this from a comprehensive developmental not a bogus ABA methodology by going directly to where the child is; attributing purpose and meaning to what the child is doing regardless (i.e., spinning wheels, lining up toys, etc). We create meaningful deepening/reciprocal attachment and expanded engagement as the CHILD sees us participating in his/her world; then we varying the affective or emotional interaction from there by, for example, putting the bus on our head, child looks up and is curious or smiles pretending the door is stuck using affective emotional gesturing and affective guided pragmatic speech/communication throughout. The latter is what represents the Developmental milestones or relating, engaging and communicating.l
    In contrast focusing on teaching the child a set(s) of highly specific skills to generalization (NET) of those skills upon the basis of what you (adult) determines what needs to be scripted onto the tabula rasa is neurodevelopmentally simply misleading and wrong and moreover, can actually inhibit or delay targeting and integrating the ASD child's core developmental challenges!
