- The Rolex Submariner 16610 is an icon. And Nicholas would do well to add one...but, could he do better?

Austin's knowledge of neo vintage Rolex is outstanding. Leaves all the Bobby Google "watch experts" for dead!!
the best rolex youtube channel
Sea dweller all the way
Hahaha, what a great joke on the helium escape valve! 😂
My vote is for the 16610LV kermit. I don't know about Japan, but prices in the US for later models are only $5K higher than the all black. I think that it's worth it for the maxi dial. To me the maxi dial improves the aesthetics and readability of the watch enough to justify the price. However, I do not see the price justification for the flat four bezel insert.
I’ve seen them from reputable dealers without papers for below 13
Agree….. either purchase a Sea Dweller 16600, or a vintage Sub 16610 ….Date…..no date…..preference’s are subjective the rehaut is inline with the newer models a nice touch.
Do you know what store has a Rolex Yellow gold Day date 40 Roman white Dial reference 228238?
Rolex is the only brand that holds value and also is highly desirable. Yes there are others they do one or the other, but not both. I like omega, but I only consider Rolex for the reasons stated above.
I have 4. The datejust SG 36 white dial Roman, the Seadweller steel and the Skydweller SG black dial. The last one is the Tudor BB SG GMT (coke) I have no need for any other watch
Personally, I’d go with the 116600ln-only made for 3 years and all the modern specs. I love that datejust, I have the 41mm version. If he wants a pre-ceramic I’d sell the blackbay and get the 14060 or the 16600.😎
I should've mentioned it in the video, but he wanted to go preceramic. Indeed, the 116600 is the best ceramic option - perfect size and sans cyclops!
Agree! Wearing my 116600 as I read this. The connoisseur’s choice.
You’re so right about little minute hands. This is what sets the explorer 40 apart from the explorer 39. Or part of it at least. Have you had a chance to try the new 40? It’s god damn perfect.
I just picked up the Explorer 40 from my AD and heartily agree!
@@brad10000 me too. And I don’t have a particularly large wrist and I love it. Always been a 36mm guy but I also had a OP41. The dial was gorgeous but a little large so I traded for the Explorer 40. Wears much better than the OP41 and the gloss black is great. I plan on holding onto mine.
@@brad10000how long did you wait?
Mk2 39mm Explorer has the longer hands. Ironically the short hand Mk1 will likely be the more collectible watch in years to come.
@@michaelrimmer338 but the 40 went up in hand size even further than the mk2
Explorer II Polar. The white dial would make a nice contrast to his current collection of darker dials.
A 16570 is always a great idea, great value for money.
Great video and advice, Austin!
I appreciate the timing example at 3:40, but with a mechanical watch, it’s likely not going to be accurate to the second to begin with.
Point taken!
Still, I tend to keep a close eye on the timing of my watches, so if I have (for example) a watch running 3 seconds fast a day, then after 5 days I'll know I have around a 15 second grace period before those train doors close. And I'll factor that in.
Pedantic, I know, but I regularly catch trains with literal seconds to spare. And, to me, that beats spending 10 minutes on the platform waiting for the next one.
A sensible person would get himself a GPS watch that's accurate to the second - but where's the fun it that!
9:19 lmao did not expect that in the symposium
If that is indeed a watch's a--h---, then what is the Seamaster's? A hemmorhoid?!
@@qchang09 they should come with litte raft themed donuts!
😂
What has the title to do with the video? I’ll wait …
Hi 👋 Do you think you can make a video on where the best places to buy second hand watches are? (: I'll be in Japan in January
That An Ordain gives some real football field vibes. It seems to me the second hand is that length so it doesn't cross over the An Ordain print on the dial
"Watches have faces, watches have hands but how many have a@@ holes?" pure gold...
Rolex -GMT, perfect sports, travel, go anywhere type of watch
Casio g shock £69 at Argos quality it tells the correct time all day
Hey Austin, love your content. Do watch shops in Japan have two prices - one for locals, and another for foreigners at higher prices, to account for currency exchange rates (ie dollar being around 150Y-$1 now)?
Rolex did the helium escape valve right; no screw down.
Austin, you've been wearing your 16600 for a while now. You don't at all get annoyed by the thickness compared to your 14060?
I bet it would have, if I'd gone from the Sub to the SD. But I went from the Tudor Iconaut to the SD, and just about everything seems small compared to that. I find that you can adjust to anything if you give it enough time on the wrist. The Iconaut taught me that!
20K extra for a flat four green bezel. Yooiiiaaa
hi austin have u seen the sea dweller titanium in japan ?
Sure did, a few months back: ruclips.net/video/I7qNIC9nWQ4/видео.html
I got myself a 16600 no-holes case earlier this year after watching all your videos on it and what a great choice that was... i Had owned 14060M and date subs but never really liked the feel or look of them, specially how common they are. Can't recommend it enough!
Very nice!
Good call. That’s a great watch. I agree with Austin the SD’s much more special compared to Subs. I’d only stick with 40mm SD’s, new 43 and Deep Sea are overkill.
@@m3sixspeed824 absolite sweetspot... 40mm, alu bezel, but parachrome HS, modern Rolex and much much rarer than the sub. Absolute dream!
14060 or m for me. No cyclops
Excellent!!!
I got the 16610 V serial for the engraved Rehaut and I didn’t want the ceramic bezel. I feel like it fits like a glove to my wrist and I would love to have a 5 digit explorer 2 polar dial to go with it when I want the extra pop.
Those 2 would work perfectly together. Kind of reminds me of my journey - a 14060 followed by a 16570 polar.
I plan to visit Tokyo next year around August. Is there a way you can help me pick out a good Submariner? And also, can you say the prices in American dollar in your videos.Thank you!
Sure, my email is in the description of my videos.
Okay.Thank you so much !
Hey Austin, what's your take for a 36mm date just on a guy's wrist. Am worried it may look underwhelming.
Am thinking of a date just fluted bezel, jubilee with a green dial. In your opinion, which dial would you recommend/prefer?
I had the seadweller 40mm 4k with ceramic bezel etc. only made for a couple of years. Let it go when prices got to around £11k. Worst mistake I ever made. Loved that watch and can’t afford it now 😓😓
16600 all the way
Seems all he wants is Rolex so I hesitate to make recommendations. Not a Rolex guy but good luck to him!
"Watches have faces, they have arms but how many has an arsehole". HAHAHA
my first nicer watch - the TUDOR PELAGOS blue dial , titanium bracelet /. date great Lum - . I have a rolex sub / date , I find myself wearing the Tudor a lot. -- at @ 5,025. U S. - have hime give it a look. ~ JDS/CT. take a look NICK -
I've been following AnOrdain. Amazing dials.
Great insights.
Would love to see you do a video on the pelagos 39
Hey Austin, love the videos. This question is a little off topic. What do you think about Grand Seiko?
Hi Hans - thanks for watching! I love GS. Honestly, they have better finishing and QC than Rolex. (Credit to them, and shame on Rolex!)
Still, the brand doesn't resonate with me as much as with Rolex. So, I can't see forking over Rolex money for one. Also, they have too many options, and I find I suffer from choice paralysis when trying to decide which piece I'd want. If I ever left Japan, though, I'd definitely get one as a symbol of my time here. (And I'd do it right - getting it at their Ginza flagship store, going for a JDM model, and choosing a piece with Kanji days).
Oh man. I couldn’t agree more with your comment on too many options. Their finishing stands out as a strong point for the brand, but they spread their name out so thin with so many models. So hard to decide.
A follow up would be: with the Yen at 150, do you have to spend Rolex money to have the model you’d like?
He needs a GMT, and something playful to contrast the more formal DJ imho. A 16710 Pepsi will do him.
most people DONT need a gmt
That would be a great choice!
(Though Nicholas' interest in the 16610 makes me think he wants to keep it in the realm of dive watches.)
my vote is for the Bluesy
Cartier Tank.
I just got a NOS 16600 and now I'm afraid to wear it!
I'd feel the same way!
16610lv. Don't agree. It's meant to be worn irrespective what model you have instead of keeping it in the safe?? What's the point of having a piece and not putting it on your wrist?
