Welcome to the Brushing Club how Brushing are ya? *Note* I played the demo before this is the full game, it is also loosely connected to another game called How Fish is Made ruclips.net/video/qG1YcPNYwpI/видео.html & The Last One & Then Another ruclips.net/video/kbDADZERWW4/видео.html
Next to Anya I feel the most bad for Daisuke in all of this. He just wanted some work experience for his resume and got dragged into all of this, dying in the process. And painfully too. All thanks to some narcissistic bastard. That part where he lamented on if his parents would blame themselves made me so so sad. He deserved better. Anya deserved better. Everyone but Jimmy deserved better than this.
@@Strix2031 Curly has his faults too but that’s what makes me love him more, if he realized what a huge problem Jimmy was he could have avoided the whole situation. But he’s empathetic to a fault, even after realizing what Jimmy did to Anya he didn’t want to lose his friend. Saying that they’ll fix it. Only after Jimmy caused the crash did Curly wise up but it was too late, his empathy costed him an arm and a leg *badum tsh*
Could I ask you to replace the term "narcissistic" with "self-centered" or "selfish" in your vocabulary? NPD is a trauma disorder that makes you physically incapable of thinking outside yourself without exstensive practice and effort. The majority of narcissists aware of their condition will go above and beyond to be kind and generous, but because of the ones unable to change and grow, it's practically become synonymous with "abuser". That mentality is DEEPLY harmful to the community
Yeah! Or if he was worried about rotting meat, he had another source to pick from: himself! But of course not, he would never take on any burden that he expects others to be willing to bear unflinchingly
@@sedarium5307 sure, but my point was more that Jimmy isn't willing to take on any burden himself. No responsibility, if you will. He also could have volunteered to brave the vents to get to medical, but he instead put all his effort into convincing Daisuke it was *his* responsibility.
They should release a sequel to this game except jimmy dies of a random and sudden heart attack before everything else and then everyone has an uneventful journey and return home to their families and uh. and nothing bad happens the end. I think that would be nice.
Hm. I notice a lot of people in the comments expressing confusion or disbelief at Anya being nice to Jimmy, even after what he did… and I think they’re missing something important. And that’s that Anya’s behavior is EXACTLY what a lot of victims of assault exhibit, especially in the context of a power imbalance. She tells curly specifically that he’s scared of Jimmy becoming violent, and when Curly is mangled by the crash, her only possible lifeline is even more helpless than her to change the situation. There’s a reason “fawn” is one of the principal stress responses- many of you who have been victims of abuse are probably familiar with the need to “appease” you abuser when you can’t fully separate themselves from them. Of course she’s being nice to him, even though she’s obviously terrified, even though he berates and belittles her, even though he assaulted her and his only guilt in relation to her is perceiving her in his dreams as a screaming womb with eyes. It’s her only method of protection.
*smashes fist onto desk* THANK YOU. Wtf was she supposed to do, ignore him? With how self-centered he is, he'd use silence as an excuse to hurt her more. Abusers hate being ignored. They have the mental capacity of a very violent toddler. It's like people expect her to willingly put herself through more pain for, what? Her pride? It's really not her fault if circumstances made her choose between her dignity and her LIFE.
....guys. early on anya said the mouthwash had too much sugar to be used as disinfectant. later, jimmy used it as disinfectant anyway. he really was never listening.
I wonder if there's a chance that the mouthwash just made Daisuke's wounds worse. They were serious, and I can't imagine putting any sort of sugary beverage on them would help. It probably just put him in more pain.
there really was no choice then to use the mouth wash considering the fact jimmy USED the only disinfectant(at least I think it was) to make a cocktail in order to knock out Swansea. 1:33:22
i think curly laughed when jimmy grabbed the gun because he was just so appalled at the fact that jimmy had done all of this. if he had just given anya the gun and not trusted his friend, the outcome would have been so much different…
To be fair, Anya having the gun likely wouldn't have helped. Jimmy could've seen it as a challenge and become even more hostile towards her. Plus firing a gun in a spaceship is not ideal.
@ yeah i can definitely see your point of view, but curly could have kept it unloaded and given it to her just to keep her feeling safe. if someone is pointing a gun at you, usually you don’t approach them- especially if you don’t know there’s no ammunition in it. like if she had the gun and jimmy didn’t know and he tried to assault her, she could have pointed it at him and possibly have him back off… but also there’s the fact that jimmy is insane so he would probably test her. either way looking back now, it seemed they were doomed from the start…
@@rizumu-8937 I agree. I just think that even then you are constantly have been in fear of reataliation. You can't have the gun on you at all times. And she'd still be stuck with him for eight months. Jimmy might back off for a while, but he was VERY disturbed. She was already pretty jumpy around him. It only takes him to get the drop on her ONCE when she least expects it and it's game over. She didn't deserve it and Curly should've put his foot down. It is understandable to want to support your friends. However, when they mess up this bad, you can't coddle them. They will never learn and will use your emotions to use you.
I saw some tiktok about the box lying down and it made me realise that Anya may have wanted to shoot Jimmy or herself as a way to end things; thus why the box was in the open when Jimmy got in there later on Realising that made the moment so much more impactful to me; I feel like Curly laughing at that moment made him remember Anya's words about not being able to protect herself with the gun and its just aghhhyshsj
wow two really good theories/information on this comment thread! thanks for taking the time to bring up your thoughts about this game that hasn’t been able to leave my brain lol. i feel like if anya did have access to the gun, she would have used it to take herself out instead of overdosing on pills… think about how desperate she would have been in that moment too, she was a nurse and she knew that medication was what was helping curly and keeping his pain at a somewhat manageable level- to take all of them in front of him and then OD right next to him is next level trauma for curly but also shows how far gone poor anya was in that moment
This game feels like one of those short stories you'd read in a high school English class that impacts you forever. I've been so excited for the full release!
Honestly, my favourite part about this story is the banality of the evil. The Pony Express is an incompetent and careless but otherwise normal corporation. There’s nothing supernatural that is scary, there’s no big conspiracy. The villain is just one nasty, human, scumbag
maybe, JUST maybe, the story was trying to get Jimmy and Pony Express to merge concepts, what I mean is, Jimmy is very very often mentioned along with horses -He's into horses joke -the scene after Jimmy set the ship for the asteroid ends with horses -And The Annya scene, where you aim at horse fetuses, might be the most obvious one, Jimmy, is the horse, and the horse is often said to be incompetent and all, while Jimmy repeats to himself that's he's competent, and is going to fix it everything. nice metaphors there
@@justanotaku1420 I think the common thread is the draconian, abusive attitude the company and Jimmy share. We see that Pony Express (PE) is an exploitative workplace (max 5 hour sleep, unrealistic deadlines, docking worker’s pay, one celebration a year), but despite exercising all this power and making their workers miserable, they still fall flat on their face with nothing to show for it. Jimmy has the same attitude - assaulting and belittling Anya, demanding the others acknowledge him as captain and insisting he take chargers fix everything. But it doesn’t work, ending with him using unsanitary mouthwash to disinfect Daisuke, making everything worse. He thinks “people should be worth their titles” works in reverse - being captain should make him competent and respected, rather than curly who was competent and respected and got to be captain
@@danielearl3591 Awesome analysis! You left out Swansea and Daisuke, they're just two guys trying to keep their respective lives together and build themselves up. The corporation offered them the chance to save themselves, and they took the offer as willingly as they took the same offer from Jimmy. When the corporation collapsed, it took away everything the Captain and crew had spent their lives achieving. When Jimmy utterly broke under pressure, he destroyed the lives of every person aboard. Between the two combined forces of an inefficient corporation collapsing and an incompetent employee, you can do a very good job getting people killed and throwing their accomplishments out the window.
I know neither of you have had an office job because sugar is absolutely an essential presence in appeasing employees (I say this lightheartedly not conspiratorially lol)
I could be wrong but think it might be some sort of metaphor about how corporations treat employees like children. And using rewards that you could just go out and get yourself. I think there’s a lot of stuff here about how we are made to chase these goals and dreams in a world full of false merit.
Another juxtaposition I haven’t seen much people talking about is between Swansea and Jimmy. While Swansea puts Daisuke out of his misery because he does care about him, Jimmy continued to prolong Curly’s misery by keeping him alive up to the very end. Like he was continuing to torture him while justifying it in is head, not only physically but also mentally. Curly had to watch the decay of everything he worked hard to maintain and the deaths of everyone he cared about.
A good clue that it was Jimmy, is that in the intro we are crashing the ship from the left seat, which later turns out to be Jimmy's seat when he talks with Curly in the cockpit.
Also when he's giving him the painkillers you hear crying since he knows that he was the one that caused all this. Curly tried to fix it, but got disfigured by the crash and Jimmy's conscience is subtly breaking through when he gives him his pills cause he knows it's all his fault.
What an absolute masterpiece in the art of "show, not tell". In all of his hallucinations, Jimmy spared not an ounce of remorse for what he did to Anya. He only cared about how her pregnancy would affect him, as seen in how the fetus is made up horses and charges at him. That segment - along with Curly's laughter when Jimmy gets the gun - really left a bad taste in my mouth. If only I had some mouthwash...
He also only ever apologizes to Curly he never mentions Anya after she’s dead. He doesn’t even comment upon seeing her dead body, really shows that he’s truly not sorry and is simply trying to justify his actions in his head
@TheIdiotChihuahua Goodness I didn't even realize that! There's so many details in Jimmy's perspective. He's horrible but he's a wonderfully written character.
@@TheIdiotChihuahua Even with Curly it's not a really apology or remorse. He still acts like he saved the day and did so good when he puts Curly in the pod. He even changed from saying "we" (him and Curly) to "me".
@@horrorhistory7342 true, of course the apology really only served Jimmy as its only due to Curly still being alive that Jimmy is trying to justify his actions in his head, that he’s doing a good thing and is not a bad guy honest! Just trying to do what’s right guys!
I think it's not that he was without remorse, I think he didn't even understand that he did something bad, he probably thought that what he did to Anya was good or reciprocated.
Another crazy thing about jimmy i noticed. Anya only asks him to give curly the medicine twice. The second time he offers and then the third time he gets mad shes asking.
The time he where he offers to do it is also the time where we can hear him physically assault Curly after giving the meds… he only volunteered so he could vent out his frustration :/
Spoilers, just in case Those were good hints he was the villain, too. His outbursts/irritation with Anya made me cringe in a “oh this man is unsafe” kind of way.
its like he was trying to relate with or even BE curly that way in order to feel like he has the same responsibility weighing on curly. when jimmy offers, he's trying to act like a good captain, and when he's asked, he's acting as if he's overworked just like how curly would talk about how hard his role as captain is. 1:14:48 rlly is so ironic
@@yukikaenthusiast5164I was thinking that too! Even tho the time and characters jump around a bit, I didn't think jimmy/us had done all that much... Not enough to freak out so much like that
Jimmy uses the disinfectant that could've been used to save Daisuke in order to knock Swansea out in order to get to the vent where he forced Daisuke to go in and grievously injure himself in the first place
Hate to be that guy, but Anya mentioned that the mouthwash had too much sugar to be a proper disinfectant when they first found it. So it doesn't really matter
@@alexanderthedisturbing3809I think they had actual disinfectant (not mouthwash) at first. Jimmy used the actual disinfectant to drug Sawnsea, then used mouthwash on Daisuke when he got hurt.
@@miroIsSleeping Most likely Jimmy SAed Anya and got her pregnant. When you think about how she asked why there were no locks on the sleeping quarters, the fact that she hid the gun before telling Jimmy he got her pregnant because “I knew you wouldn’t let me use it to protect myself, Curly”, and Anya saying she no longer wants Jimmy in the medbay. Also how Jimmy treats Anya from his point of view. He constantly belittles her and shames her while she’s alive, even when she was locked in medbay with Curly, Jimmy’s main concern wasn’t Anya hurting herself but rather her hurting/killing Curly. He also never seems to think of her as a person, we seem him get upset with Daisuke’s death, how he has a whole “responsibility” scene with Swansea, and his whole obsession with Curly- but when it comes to Anya most of the focus from his POV is on her pregnancy, not her. Her face appears blacked out most of the time after her death too.
@@septimus3083and also looks like it's doom to the line of Pony something bullcrap's, they ain't even taking the blame for sending the crew into space and Literally blamed it on them for the "Mistake" that *THEY'VE* Cause.....Jimmy probably was also in this but....I'm a dumbass but Who knows?
@@septimus3083 I had a very similar reading of this, too. Something that stuck with me is that while Curly is obviously the “better leader” and the “better person” of the two men, he also fails Anya. He doesn’t seem to prioritize her safety in the way he claims he meant to.
hearing curly’s cries as his leg was getting cut off was so gut-wrenching. imagine everyone who was trying to keep you alive dies, and you’re left alone helpless with a narcissistic psychopath who got everyone killed. god damn i was not ready.
I felt so awful for poor Curly. His entire body was horribly maimed trying to save everyone, and then he just has to live in silent agony as everyone thinks he's the villain, unable to share the truth. Topping it all off with that scene of him getting tortured and fed his own leg meat... it's so upsetting.
Bro, I was expecting a _funny-ish_ horror game like the short ones Manly always plays, I was absolutely _NOT_ expecting, nor ready, for an incredibly well produced, Jacob's Ladder level nightmare, of a guy's egotistical arrogant psychosis, this game delivered ESPECIALLY in the last quarter. The game literally left me feeling so emotionally bad for the crew, especially the baby and Greg! I was really hoping SO MUCH that there was some kind of "good ending" route, or that there was some way to save the scenario like with a second playthrough... Nope. Just a simple nightmare of a situation.
Jimmy walks into medical, sees Anya’s d3@d body and says nothing, and yet when he turns to the vent he comments about not being able to look at Daisuke’s blood anymore. It’s like she wasn’t even a person to him.
The "I'm sexually attracted to cartoon horses" comment in the psych eval, the fact that the fetus was a horse in the ultrasound scene, everything checks out.
I love how Manly can switch his mindset so easily to whichever character he's playing as. Listening to him play as Jimmy and insanely muttering " I'm right they're wrong they're all out to get me" while comitting vile acts and then an hour later yell at Jimmy, as curly, for commiting those same acts lol
Y’know what more tragic is that in the end (if there’s a chance) Curly will be/still is *taking responsibility* for what Jimmy did, when if ever the Tulpar is found. Pony Express will put the blame for the company loses, the damages to the ship, the death of his crew all on this poor broken man… :(
Well best we can hope is they look at the order of how people died and just deem jimmy as some serial killer, I mean there's no way curly could have kept himself alive for that long and then taken his own skin and limbs, plus most deaths could be seen as done by jimmy, meaning curly is probably seen as just a victim in all of this
i dont think its likely seeing the state poor jimmy was left in, all of the blame would be redirected back at jimmy sadly this does not change the fact jimmy is the reason why everybody is almost dead
@@luxgh But it was jimmy's choice to HURT everybody aboard, while curly should be held accountable to that but the entire blame still falls on jimmy for doing all of this actions, let me give you a example if i were to give someone a gun with the thought of them being stable enough id trust them enough to not shoot me the end result..they shoot me- that is my consequence but here is the thing the person who had the gun made the dilberate choice to still shoot me for no reason it still makes them responsible for that action
@@QuiteFunnyIsnt1t they both deserve blame. Jimmy more than anyone, but curly could’ve easily solved this in a different way. It shouldn’t have ended like that, but it did, due to his selfish actions of putting his friend before his job & crew.
When you realise why Anya started to freak out that ship's cargo is only mouthwash (full of alcohol) and why she hesitated to drink it for so long. Damn, heavy stuff.
What's interesting is that the mouthwash could have been used as a decent food supply extender via boiling and distilling it to separate the water, sugar, and ethanol as 3 possible resources (their mixer thing would have added the sugar to their food to extend their supplies just a bit, more water to drink, and ethanol to use as disinfectant for Curly). Of course, the main issue is that, just like how Jimmy pointed out, their oxygen was doomed to run out before their food, so they primarily drank the mouthwash to get hammered.
@@joshuakim5240 Plus if they had enough electricity they could turn the water into hydrogen and oxygen, though I'm not sure what they'd do with the hydrogen since burning it just takes the oxygen and turns it back into water.
@@joshuakim5240sadly I think Anya might have known that it was possible since she is smart, but she probably knew that Swansea and the others would keep drinking it anyway. Or that distilling it would make stronger alcohol, right? Which could have been even worse for anya
And then someone gets fakely accused and their life ruined because no investigation was done and people only believed word of mouth. Its called you get authorities involved and anyone is innocent until proven guilty, not guilty until proven innocent. Jimmy is a scumbag but Curly's best friend being accused with zero evidence means nothing to him.
I genuinely,y believe Swansea saved that pod for Daisuke. He calls himself a bad person, sure, but he’s self aware and a parent above being an alcoholic. That last speech to Daisuke solidified that for me.
I was looking for this comment. EXACTLY! He was old, miserable, resentful. But he had love in his heart. Life just wasn't kind to him. After he killed Daisuke and Jimmy talked to him, it was obvious when he wasn't interested in getting in the pod that he was saving it for Daisuke
Just started the vid and this comment confused me so much because I live in Swansea and I would have never imagined that Swansea would be used as someone’s name 😂
30 seconds into the video how i already notice a cool detail: the ship's name is "Tulpar", which translates from kazakh to "Horse". Pretty fitting since the company's name is Pony Express.
Yeah, I live in Tatarstan, and heard word "Tulpar" couple of times and in the Mouthwashing demo I thought that ship's name reminds me of something. Didn't knew the meaning though because I only know some elementary words from Tatar language, but Kazakh and Tatar are both in the same language family, so it's also a horse for us! Both a clever reference and a cool nod to turkic languages
It's true. It's very true. I know a few people who would do everything Jimmy did a thousand times over. I have a theory the developer based Jimmy off someone they knew in real life.
@@kotojokes It's very possible actually. Jimmy's are way too common in this day and age. I guess about everyone have at least one Jimmy in their social circle, unfortunately.
I love how they really made sure to portray Swansea as an antagonist just to completely rugpull us and show us a man who is just lost in his own head and actually really loves Daisuke as a son, even when he completely lost his mind.
@TheGlenofKrokot Yeah he went full mask off when he executed him. He made it very clear that while he isn't that different from his sons, Daisuke at least showed enthusiasm in what he was doing despite being without ambition or knowledge. That final revelation that the pod was going to be him too? Heartbreaking, the devs handled characters to perfection.
Oh yeah. The line about him not wanting Daisuke to become an experienced but deeply miserable old man like him, especially after he already had kids he couldn't stand, because he still sees potential in Daisuke and wants him to put that to use in a better job really hit it out the park. Personally, what he said about mistakes granting you experience but ultimately leaving you more mangled each time really tore a hole into my chest... Trauma really does that to you, and he was gonna do everything in his power to spare Daisule from that fate. But it wasn't enough.
@eagle-tn6br I think he pretty much says it after executing him, when Jimmy confronts him about it. He may not say it directly but his choice of words leaves very little to wonder.
he always claims he's taking responsibility but he never does. you can never be sure whether he's truly remorseful or if he just wants the pain to stop. also, i've noticed he has a really manipulative, abuser-type personality
@@starlitnight13 Yeah, and this is especially on the nose at 1:59:16. He is quite literally walking away from his responsibility yet still "facing it".
The second time Jimmy is giving Curly painkillers you can hear him physically assaulting the latter in the process. Brutalising a helpless injured person, already in constant pain, whom he made that way in the first place and can easily access without witnesses by bullying the ship's medic while taking advantage of her squeamishness and personal fear of him. It's chilling.
the Way he was resisting the first two times, but then after Jimmy beats him that second time he stops resisting completely. He was terrified of that man, with how helpless he was
@@ceebee3083yeah honestly, i feel like people don’t focus on the fact that curly also was not a Good Guy. he gave jimmy a pass bc he’s his good old friend and favors him enough to excuse assault. curly told jimmy that He (curly) was going to fix it (the pregnancy)!!!
@@ceebee3083yea, I hear a lot of hate for Jimmy which 100% understandable he was a monster, but Curly completely messed up my telling Anya he could talk it out with Jim, even after hearing what he did to her, he still believed in him and put Anya at risk again.
What I expected: a silly horror game about mouthwash zombies What I got: a masterpiece of storytelling that is deserving of a movie a la how Iron Lung is getting one
All characters failed their parts in a way, apparently curly was a great captain, but in the end he was too soft to get rid of jimmy, he valued his friendship more than the safety of the crew, and that ended up killing everyone
I agree with you that Curly was too soft but what were they going to do with Jimmy while they're in the middle of nowhere half way through a year long voyage?
Also a funny detail, and it might be a stretch on my part, lots of things in the ship were marked with the message "will be discounted from your payment" but the gun note didnt have that, the captain had permission to kill from start, with no discount to his final payment
Did anybody else notice that when Anya asked how much longer the haul would be that it was estimated at 8 months, but they ran out of food and supplies much sooner than that. The company was going to let them all starve anyway - quite the scathing indictment on corporate "best practices" and the mass layoffs we've seen in recent years.
To be fair, the food packet materializer gets foamed over in the crash - Manly didn't focus on it, but it's in a column of foam and completely inaccessible. I wouldn't put it past PE to have shorted them anyhow (like prev says, also threw Daisuke on with only 4 cryo pods so probably didn't care), but it's not entirely that.
I wonder if it was related to when Jimmy directed the ship towards an asteroid, the screen says something like "4000 crew credits docked" and the credits are used to buy food I think, which would mean he was the reason they lost a lot of rations.
@@david.g.9349 oh... The fact Daisuke didn't have a cryo pod ready for him and yet Swan saved one for him anyways... ( Also I just realized after over 1 hour that Swan has a swan charm on his keys because of his name )

@@truejavier it still could be one. Markiplier is making one about Iron Lung. Maybe if the game gets a lot of traction (which I think it should deservingly do tbh) then we might see one!
I legit thought it was gonna be more of a resource magnament survival game where you have to balance and ration your actual food and mouthwash, wasn't expecting it to be an all in le head, secretly asshole protagonist, narrative driven game
i hate that jimmy speaks like this is the captains fault. You assaulted anya. You got the captain horribly injured. You had a hand in making swansea turn back to alcohol, and you basically killed daisuke. Just a horrible narcissistic piece of garbage.
@@rainyday2966 There is that guy who lures women as a photograph and then tortures them. There is that doctor from Cat Lady, who was killing his female patients and turning them into "paintings" and other "art". I think he also assaulted them, but I don't recall anymore.
The fact that it was anya who said that first like. Breaks my heart. Because i understand what shss doing and why. "Our worst moments don't make us monsters" . In the context of thinking it was curly, its just tragic. In the case of what jimmy did to her specifically...its horrific
I have to say, this game made incredible use of the unreliable narrator. The fact that we play most of the game through Jimmy's perspective means this unreliable narrator really obscured the truth from us, much like how Jimmy's been refusing to acknowledge the reality of what he's done to everyone around him. It's really good writing
And they're very smart too with the way they did it. Not ONCE did we see anything about Jimmy being bad in the demo, they basically played us like a fiddle by making us grow biased.
I've been interested in this game since I saw the demo, and wow it did not disappoint. I find it very poignant how, despite how tragic Anya's story was, she was focused on the least at the end. Daisuke, Curly, and Swansea all haunted Jimmy's actions, but while there was a theme of horror with babies, Anya just...wasn't there at all. Shows you how little he cared about what he did to her - he was only subconsciously focused on how her pregnancy affected him. Realistic, unfortunately. Also, I love the end credits song. I hope they add it to streaming platforms or something.
@jokes4897 Im sure missing the skin on your body would feel sensitive, aka constant 10/10 pain in every aspect of life, drinking water, eating, shitting, and breathing. Oh yeah, and he's missing all his limbs so he can never move again. Prosthetics won't work on that kind of damage. Idk if you've seen people like this in real life, but the mere sight of them scares people. Really gives a new definition to suffering
@@cdrealist9398regardless, let’s just not. There is no reason to make light of one or the other. And if you must, there are people that have survived chemical burns, amputation, and sat through years of skin grafts and pulled through. There are victims of the other mentioned acts who couldn’t handle the trauma and are no longer with us. There is no comparing suffering, there is only suffering and we should be sensitive enough to not have conversations like these.
I love the vent scene. I think not enough people are talking about it. The whole message of "stepping away from responsibility" and not being allowed to face the facts is a just-perfect theme for it. I love it.
I also think people should take a good look at the imagery when you enter the vent in the sideways medical room - the wall is full of axes that have been forced into the wall, radiating outward from the vent opening. They're all obscured by shadow making them black, all except for the axes directly around the vent opening which are highlighted by a spotlight and visibly bright red.
@@MiggetyMattR I didn't even realize... But the fact that he's in there at all proves that he never once needed to force Daisuke to go in. He always could have done it himself.
Wow, that scene at the end where Jimmy basically talks to his own conscience through the mascot hit so hard. It’s saying what everyone here is thinking, and yet he still won’t listen, not even when his own mind is pleading with him to understand how badly he’s messed up. Every single piece of evidence he has points to him being at fault, but he’s still insisting ‘it’s fine, it’s fixed, I did good.’
I think that scene is representative of him talking to his "baby" (metaphor for his responsibilities and sins). He claims he "took care of it" because Anya is dead. He has no remorse over his actions towards her and doesn't even acknowledge her after she dies, she is (and by extension the baby is) simply a "problem" that has been "fixed" in his eyes.
The scene where Curly gives Jimmy the psyc test is probably also a hint that it was Jimmy that caused the hole thing, Jimmy sits in the left chair and in the opening scene the protagonist also sits in the left chair
@@S0oo I think it’s implied that Curly is often depressed / anxious. He’s under a lot of pressure to be the perfect leader, and he seems unhappy. I think most of them are Jim’s hallucinations, but the ones with Curly imply that he carries a lot of guilt, and they also offer tiny little snippets of what he was going right before the crash, from the looks of it
The funniest part of this is Jimmy noping himself out before the cryo chamber even starts cryoing. For all he knows Curley will just be left awake with bile-soaked bandages and necrotic leg poisoning because the chamber was maintained by a depressed mechanic high on mouthwash. Those hallucinations we saw weren't Jimmy's. That was just Curley's septic fever dream as he went gently into the night.
Honestly I was expecting it not to work, Jimmy’s Final Fuckup. I hope your imagination doesn’t work in cryosleep because he sure has a lot to think about for the next 20 years if it does
No, the hallucinations were 100% Jimmy's, they were all related to how he was screwing over everyone else. And the pod working drives home the theme of Curly going through Anya's fate. Anya had no ability to get rid of her baby and would be doomed to 2 decades of stasis of raising that kid when they return. Jimmy commits one 'mistake' that takes away Curly's bodily autonomy and gives him months of suffering that he has no escape from, and it ends with the promise of 2 decades of stasis into an unknown, bleak future.
@@StarxLolitaMaaaaaann, this game's so good. Incredible observation, love how interwoven and dense the themes of automony are here - both it being wrenched from you but also being responsible for the actions you take; the extents weak and evil people will go to escape from facing the music.
I was wondering about that. Wouldn't it need to be turned on? Either way, the image of Curley being fully conscious, being put into the chamber, feeling the metal on his exposed skin, the wrap of the dirty bandages, the sound of a lunatic's last moments, it's nightmarish either way. And they're in deep space... could even be steered off-course from where they were headed, and I doubt anyone is ever going even attempt to retrieve that ship anyways. Can't even close his eye, he has to see it all. Always.
I personally saw it as a situation where an abuser is so awful and untreated with their mental illness, they bring others down with them. I'm going to say a lot of obvious things but bear with me. Everything was Jimmy's fault, and he doesn't care about "making things better," he wants to be seen as a hero. He probably thought he was *so* heroic for putting Curly in the cryogenic pod, but he honestly made it worse. Keeping Daisuke alive was torture, so imagine how much torture Curly went through. And Anya was the most patient with Jimmy, even trying to be kind to Curly who she thought crashed the ship. She tries so hard to be kind to Jimmy, and everything she asks of him is for the gain of the crew. It's ironic how Jimmy says he wants to "make things better," but when he's given orders to, he takes out his anger on someone who just wants to help. And for those who don't know, your mental state can deteriorate a lot when you're pregnant. You can experienced heightened emotions and heavy anxiety. And it's heavily implied that Jimmy was verbally abusive and sexually abusive towards Anya. So Anya was definitely scared the entire time, and Jimmy snapping at her was the final straw. Even her famous "Our worst moments don't make us monsters" line, is a trauma response with how abuse victims try to see good in their abusers. Anya's breakdown is what causes Jimmy to force Daisuke into the vent, and for Swansea to go after Jimmy which gets him shot. Because of that, it would be so easy for Jimmy to blame Anya, a helpless traumatized woman, for his actions. Daisuke's family wasn't the greatest. Sure, they lived well financially but they have ben degrading and him and calling him lazy. And he looks up to Swansea. He tries his best to be a good worker, even if he gets scolded by him. When he's drinking the mouthwash, which I interpret as a metaphor for alcohol, Jimmy doesn't try to help him. Jimmy doesn't ask to take the bottle away from him, Daisuke had to ask him himself. And a VERY important fact everyone should know is to NEVER leave a person under the influence of alcohol on the floor. You have to help put them in a sitting position so they don't choke on their vomit, which is a common way to die. But Jimmy didn't do that, he got Anya to do that for him. Swansea is the definition of a dad friend. He isn't perfect, but he tries. His dreams are so simple, which is so sad. All he wanted was a loving family and to be rid of alcoholism. Daisuke was probably the closest thing he had to a son, and Swansea was the best father figure Daisuke could get. Daisuke's parents willingly sent him on a dangerous trip, and Swansea wanted Daisuke to be OFF the ship because Swansea's whole thing IS SAFETY. He practically yells Daisuke's ear off when he goes into the vent, not because Daisuke disobeyed him, but the fact he got himself hurt. Swansea became a father to Daisuke with open arms, while Jimmy ran away from being one. Swansea was the perfect red herring because he is a villain in Jimmy's eyes, but he's truly one of the nice deep inside. Now, a huge theme in this story is envy. A big factor of the ship crashing is because Curly was getting a promotion, his life was getting better, while Jimmy was losing his job and would have to provide for a baby, his life was getting worse. Everyone adored Curly for his heroic leadership, and Jimmy even brings up how pissed off he is with hearing all of it. I personally believe that he caused that whole crash so he can be a "hero." I read a short story about this man who was poor that had a brother who had a stable income. The rich brother would bully the poor brother, hitting him with a wooden spoon when the poor brother would ask for food for his family. One day, the poor man finds a bird with a broken wing. He nurtures it back to health, and the bird leaves a seed. The poor man plants the seed and it sprouts a pumpkin. He calls his family over to eat the pumpkin, overjoyed to finally have food to eat. When he cuts open the pumpkin, gold coins, and riches come out! He now has money to provide to his family! The rich brother sees this and out of his greed, he decides to break a bird's wing to try to replicate what the poor man did. He nurtures it back to health, and the bird leaves a seed. He plants the seed, and when he cuts into it, robbers come out the pumpkin and steal his riches. Now, how does that fit into mouthwashing? In this story, Curly is a genuinely kind human being. He tries his best to help Anya out, and even ruins his own birthday party because he knew keeping a secret would be wrong. He tries to help Jimmy with his issues too. He's respected as a leader because he earned that respect. He is the poor man in this situation. Jimmy is cruel, and he experiences delusions. He truly believes he can earn that same respect by fixing a problem HE CAUSED. The crash and the aftermath is the same as the rich man breaking the bird's wing just to heal it. He doesn't care for what's good for his crew, he cares about looking like a hero. Not once does he apologize to Anya for what he did. When he feeds Curly his own meat, he says "I hope he one day thanks me for this." And it is so selfish because no one would thank a person for "fixing" a problem they created. He makes other people do his heroic actions. He's thinner than Swansea (sorry, man), he could've fit in that vent. But he didn't listen, he let a kid risk his life. He keeps having "take responsibility" being said to him, but he never does. And all of this could've been prevented if he were swapped by Curly. If Jimmy was in the hospital bed and Curly was fully healthy, Anya wouldn't have that mental breakdown, the idea of Daisuke going in the vent wouldn't have crossed his mind whatsoever, and Swansea would be alive. Maybe they'd realize they're doomed and put Daisuke in the pod while they spend their last days together. In short, Jimmy was envious which caused him to bring down others for the sake of his own benefit. Mouthwash is something that makes your breath fresh, but it doesn't clean your teeth as proper as brushing does. It's to get rid of the bad taste in your mouth, which is exactly what Jimmy did. Final note: I liked how it swaps between Curly and Jimmy, it makes it unclear who crashed the ship. Though, it kinda was easy to figure out the twist with how Jimmy was the one who caused this, I think it was done beautifully. The pieces were there for the player to pick up, which makes it great how it could vary from player to player.
I'm glad I decided to read this comment in it's entirety. It gives a helpful insight and perspective on how the story goes and how awful Jimmy is. Thank you RUclips commenter for showing how well you can explain this story without it being too wordy or overexplained
yeah no wonder game is titled "mouthwashing" because it's what Jimmy was doing. Anya also said that the mouthwash was more of a sweetener than a disinfectant, which was why everything Jimmy did just made everything worse. It left Jimmy's breath smelling fresh, but didnt really clean the dirt out. so its like mouthwashing was just for Jimmy to make himself look good or to "feel" like a hero. great symbolism
Damn, that Anya reveal was quite messed up when you piece the clues together. Could even say it leaves a bad taste in the mouth that no ship's worth of cargo could get rid of. Swansea, for being as cranky as he appeared, also made a lot more sense in hindsight as well with how he interacted with the crew.
@@ziyanbatada7753 He sexually assaulted Anya and got her pregnant. Part of the reason why he crashed the ship was because he feared what would happen to him if she pressed charges and/or if he would have had to take responsibility for the child when they got back
Jimmy purposely crashed the ship because he was afraid of facing consequences for assaulting Anya. That’s why he told Curly “what do you think happens when we get back”
Fun fact! Sugar was used as a disinfectant for a LONG time, up until around the Civil War iirc. So mouthwash would fall into the "better than nothing" category of disinfectants.
But not for its intended purpose as an ORAL disinfectant. The bacteria in our mouths eat sugar, and in turn produce acid as waste which eats away at our tooth enamel, causing cavities and decay. The whole point is, using the mouthwash FEELS like the right thing to do, because of the alcohol burn and minty fresh feeling it leaves you with, but it actually exacerbates bad oral health. Just like Jimmy does things that FEEL right in his mind but just make everything worse.
normal mouthwash , yes. however in this game anya notes how the sugar content in this specific mouthwash offsets any disinfectant. its a commentary on capitalistic pursuit despite concern on buyers health. its mouth wash that actually makes ur gum health WORSE lol. not only were they spending a year carrying only mouthwash, its mouthwash that isnt even mouthwash.
That twist was well foreshadowed. You'd think it's only one but it's a continuous amount of twists of the knife and realizations of "oh no, that's what happened... Oh it keeps getting worse oh fuck" Also I adored the way they used glitches as scene transitions but also censorship. That medbay one was really cool. I do feel like the ending drags on a bit much. Spoilers: Jimmy just blaming everyone but himself for things they didn't do. Blaming Curly for getting all laid off, for the crash, blaming Daisuke for the cocktail even though it was his doing and idea... Even acting like Swansea was going to use the cryopod but you can tell it was for Daisuke (he reminds Swansea of his kids and as Manly said, reading between the lines tells you early on that Swansea cares even before him saying it out loud). Almost all of what happened is Jimmy's fault. And Jimmy refused to take the blame. Him keeping Curly alive was even an obsession more than anything, when Anya locked herself in the medbay, he kept talking about "saving Curly". He only vaguely mentioned her when trying to convince Daisuke to get in Utility. Also you can tell very early on that Curly crashing the ship is out of character with how much he cares for the rest of the crew. The only thing that wasn't Jimmy's fault was them getting laid off by the company.
Even in demo it was kind of known that the protag is responsible from the "take responsibility" mangled texts. It was that or the captain and him are the same person.
A big clue about the perpetrator being Jimmy Space is right at the beginning: you sit in the second pilot's seat (on the left) + no cap's scanner (Curly always has it on him during all flashbacks)
On top of that he actively refuses to acknowledge what he's done to Anya in his nightmare scenes. We only ever hear the baby's cry, or that big womb scanning for horses. Even when going through the hall of IDs Anya's face is the only one consistently covered. The only time he wants to see Anya is when her warped version celebrates him, or using her own phrase to make himself feel better. Jimmy is just a vile parody of a human being.
When CC arrived in the emergency room it was identified that he hypermintemia, hyper meaning more than usual, mint meaning presence of mint and emia meaning presence in blood.
1:15:13 is so heartbreaking to listen to. curly is absolutely terrified of jimmy after the last time he admistered him painkillers, where he brutally beat him into submission. so, he obediently lays still and holds his mouth open, praying that jimmy won't take his rage out on him again, and sobs
One thing I gotta blame Curly for is to not have frozen Jimmy after he seemingly learned what he did to Anya (and showing signs of likely going to do something rash soon) while he still could.
I assume he hesitated because Jimmy was the only person on board qualified to be the co-pilot. Maybe he could have trained Daisuke or something though to fill the role.
@@ameliemaynard4217 its more of Jimmy being his friend. After all, Jimmy only got there because Curly put in a good work, and then Curly couldnt believe he would do something like abusing Anya
Even if he couldn't have restrained him he could've had anya sleep in the medical room(the place she works in with a lock) or given her the gun at least
@@eze1196i dont necessary think „kind „ is the right word? he clearly knew that Anya meant Jimmy when she said that she was pregnant. I think it Curly was more interested in keeping the Peace than being a good captain. Someone on social media said that „Curly choose to beJimmy‘s friend insteaad the Crew´s Captain“ when he did nothing he promised Anya he‘d do“
This is definitely the kind of game that I’ll need to rewatch, so much that was foreshadowed in retrospect, I know I missed some. The scene with Jimmy and Anya and the mouthwash: he frightens her, asks if she’s thinking of drinking the mouthwash, “wouldn’t fix anything, as much as I’d like it to”
This is a story that is going to stick with me for a while. I cant think of any other horror game where you effectively play a horrible person who doesnt see how horrible they are. From the assult of the nurse to the constant "why cant everyone be like me, listen to me, and be grateful of me" attitude that im sure weve all seen from someone in our own lives at some point- this is the best example of someone being the hero of teir own story...but a villain to everyone else. Everyone should hate Jimmy but yet he still had a friend. The true horror here, to me, is that Curly had to endure all of this. If it were me, id spend all that time blaming myself for trusting someone who likely showed warning signs. but yet jimmy doesnt hate himself- he ends everything thinking that he did good. He doesnt blame himself- and dooms a man to either waking up in 20 years and slowly dying alone or being found and having to live with everything he likely blames himself for god what a good story. not only does it have Evangelion vibes but also the vibes of if the podcast Wolf359 was a horror drama instead of a comedy drama
The worst situation of all is that Jimmy could've just end it all on way easier way if he could've just let someone help him,he refused. Every single time someone tried helping him out were met with death or something even more terrible like Curly, that man did NOT deserve allat
So basically Jimmy, the protagonist was the one responsible for the crash? I'm just making sure I get things correctly, but if so, then that man really WAS some sort of psychopath. Ignoring warning signs to turn left to avoid crash when being told to do so and then disengaging the autopilot that would have had corrected the ship to avoid the crash. Man, this game sure has a lot going for it, just wish there were more games where we had an actual choice and for this one, an cool alternative route would have had been to be able to prevent the crash in the first place or later on just be an actual good guy.
What I find interesting is that even Curly's eyelids are gone. If I'm correct, there are some cases where people can only move their eyelids, so they can use it to communicate through morse code. So unless you count Curly being able to move his eye and still being able to slightly move whats left of his body, all of his ways of communication seem to effectively been eradicated
it’s no wonder ayna didn’t want to give him the painkillers- she had been rendered helpless and unable to communicate by jimmy when he assaulted her. she didn’t want to give that same experience to curly :(
I find it interesting that everything REALLLY started going to shit the moment Jimmy got his grubby little hands on the code scanner. The moment he ACTUALLY has the ability to do anything around the ship he fucks everything up. Like everyone seemed to be surviving okay for two whole months until then.
Whoever did Curly's medication voice acting did incredible. The one where Jimmy assaults Curly is genuinely so disturbing to hear and his cries are so real and heart wrenching. The fact that is his supposed best friend who he's known forever beating him is so sad. Jimmy is the worst and his biggest offense is what he did to Anya and how he speaks to her.
THIS!! and because of that it makes sense that ayna didn’t want to give him the painkillers. force-feeding curly the medication would mean physically hurting him and traumatizing him further while he’s incapacitated and doesn’t have the means to fight back- a situation that ayna is all-too familiar with.
Spoiler People are feeling bad that curly will have to spend another 20 years in the Cryo pod, but maybe, just maybe, pony express will realise one of their ships hasn't made any deliveries or come back yet, Swanseas or Daisukes families will complain about their absence, it would probably catch the eye of the press and there would probably be a long space search for the Tulpar ship. This is my headcanon because this game has caused me enough emotional damage lol, even if Curly does get found he'd still have to live with the trauma and guilt :(
Honestly you have a point. Pony Express doesn't gaf about their workers but characters had families on earth that will eventually ask someone to find the lost ship. So logically I think Curly would survive if they find him. But his state is really bad and his mental health is also nonexistent at this point so even in the best scenario he still gets a tragic ending
Pony Express is apparently being dissolved, that's why everyone is getting fired. If the company would continue to exist then the it would care about what happened to the ship, at least because it would otherwise absolutely murder their reputation and cement them as the "we crash ships, loose cargo and don't really care company" to their corporate customers. That being said, the company has no future and might not even exist when the crash is discovered, so someone else would probably have to organize the search (presumably whatever government that mandated the cryopods).
@@asj3419 Yeah, that's what I thought, even if Pony Express shut down, the crews families would grow concerned about them and contact the authorities, so I don't doubt the government or something would organise a search.
Wow Pony Express seriously put a single woman on board a long voyage flight through space with several other men (one of them clearly having sociopathic tendencies) with absolutely no locks on the personal living quarters but tons of locks for expensive equipment and prioritized staff?
You know, its kinda ironic if you think about it, the name game its mouthwash, something that helps cleaning and leaving a good smell/flavor in the mouth, but given all the crap that happens, the r@p3 of Annya, Swansea having to kill his student, Daisuke trying to help everyone just to end up dead the second he got to, it leaves a bad taste in the mouth.....
I like how the game on the table is "Sorry!" It's a variation of games like Ludo and Parcheesi, but specifically named Sorry! because of the ways you'll ruin each others' progress without anything other than an empty apology. It's a part of the game, after all. It's fitting considering how much Jimmy apologizes in the final act of the game. He can cry and say sorry as much as he wants but his words ring hollow.
i like that you pointed this out because it made me think about the cutscene with polly & jimmy, after polly basically mocks him and says "sorry!". possibly related!
"Our worst moments don't make us monsters," says man who only has worst moments. (OG comment: "Our worst moments don't make us monsters," says man whose worst moments make him a monster.)
That's just a full blown narcissist move, stealing other peoples (Anya) quotes for use in their own fucked world. I actually know some "person" IRL a lot like Jimmy and they have done that same shit, along with a lot of the rest of Jimmys other mental gymnastics
its real fucked up how jimmy reuses(and repurposes) this line from anya, the woman he assaulted and A doesn’t want to acknowledge her death and B does not care about the baby
I liked the part where Jimmy is backing away from responsibility while still having to be looking at it. Hes so obessed with the idea hes being forced to take responsibility, being forced to be the mature one who figures everything out, but ultimately hes still just walking away from it.
That is a great catch! Man, between the dialogue (like the dead pixel scene) and the camera angles and the sound design, they really packed this game to the brim with symbolism.
Definitely feels intentional, especially when it also ends with the antagonist chasing the protagonist with an axe and smashing through a door with it. Although, with a twist, because this time the protagonist is the monster and the antagonist is a hero.
the visual foreshadowing in this game is really subtle sometimes and insanely good. especially foreshadowing / hinting to themes of SA. a lot of the imagery hits different when you keep that in mind while rewatching. this game is a really incredible piece of art
Imagine how darkly funny it would've been if the cryopod door closed, curly turns to the side to see a sticky note from Swansea or Daisuke saying "Cryo pod not working, misters work but can't get it to freeze, will fix when we get home."
@@maxpower6006 Lol, he's gonna be like that one guy with just one hand that had to fight through monsters and a parasite (from that game Manly has played through) but he's just gonna do everything with his mouth and teeth
I was already thinking how "poetic" it would be At least one passess out first when they freeze to death- and in that state, it would be the last mercy for Curly, the man with no future left inside a escape meant for a dead intern who had so much life in front of him
I thought so too! I'm surprised it isn't a more common interpretation of the ending. There's no real indication the machine worked at all before the game cuts. It'd be entirely in character and fitting that Jim would think himself the 'hero' for preserving Curly when he actually fucked it up. And even if it DID work all he would be doing is condemning Curly to a life of hell.
Jimmy is a POS for what he did. But I feel like Curly (and possibly the rest of the crew) failed anya by letting jimmy get away with what he did to her,had they locked him away or got rid of him in any other manner all of this could of been avoided.
Did Swansea and Daisuke know, tho? I know Curly did, plus they're stuck in space, so correct me if I'm wrong was there anything they could do? Perhaps lock him in a room, idk
Same, Curly's only crime was being waaay too lenient with Jimmy. The only explanation I can think of is he didn't have enough solid proof of Anya's claims to properly address it and was probably trying to give Jimmy the benefit of the doubt, but the pregnancy should've been the straw that broke the camel's back if her paranoia and Jimmy's attitude towards her weren't enough indicators of what happened. As for Swansea and Daisuke, I'm under the impression that the whole thing was being kept from them (probably in order to "keep the peace" given the already stressful situation) so not sure I can really fault them much. Considering how Swansea's characterization turned out... I get the feeling he would've gone axe-happy on Jimmy a LOT sooner if he had known.
@@EagleTimberWolf Maybe it's just me projecting my own feelings onto the story, but coming to terms with the fact that someone you know and trust, and has been your friend for a long time, is a monster is really hard to do. I reckon Curly might be in denial about the true gravity of the situation at hand.
@@Nevernamed I think so too, I would say he was in denial about his friendship with Jimmy as a whole the way he would brush off his blatant jealous comments, him twisting his words around to make him look like the bad guy after he drops the news about lay offs, no judgement I've been in toxic friendships longer than I should've too
The conversation with Swansea at 2:05:00 ish is so beautifully written and cinematic. And then we have a giant 🌮 with eyes birthing various horse monsters. What a game.
@@igorigor3960I reckon it does kinda fit the vibe of the ending (however drawn out it is): jimmy probably just shot swansea in the head the second latter tried to charge him with an axe, so (just like he did with curly later) he made up a whole scene with him as a protagonist here he justified his actions bc "[he] was going to fix everything and swansea opposed/doubted/etc [him]" again with curly he made up a whole conversation where *both* curly still suggested he'd be the villain so jimmy would be the hero AND his apology got (kinda) accepted
Genuinely one of the most incredible psychological horror games I've played in a /long/ time. Honestly, the "traditional" horror segments were the weakest parts of the game. Not to say that they were bad, but that everything else was so far above. The pacing, the specific way the story is structured in these separated pieces. The slowly building dread as your understanding continues. This felt like The Thing, yet without the monster, and somehow more dread inducing. I'm at a loss for words. This kind of story only works as well as it does because of it's interactivity, I think. As a movie or something, this wouldn't hit the same.
Finally someone else gets it. Saying it should be a movie or should've been a movie takes away the aspect of it being able to tell a narrative in the way it does. So sick of people thinking a movie is the ultimate form of storytelling when it's honestly just not good for a lot of things
@@copper4855 well for what its worth, i think this was a GREAT story but not a great game. Simply because the interactivity is pretty weak. You can pick up items but only use them when the game allows you to. Doors and entryways are locked off, basically for narrative reasons you are limited in agency. And as far as interactivity goes, we didn't see anything particularly engaging. Most of it was very simplistic mechanics. One potential for a game like this is making certain easter eggs and details that flesh out the story, but are only unlocked or found by engaging with certain optional mechanics and puzzles. That way you can still keep it fully narrative driven but give the character a bit of agency and reward them for utilizing actual gameplay elements. As it stands, this game was mostly a forced walking sim. So yeah, I again state, very, very good story but not strong as a game.
@@Terrapin-gw6bb The sheer fact that you're directly involved in the story makes it hit harder, though. You may not have much agency or whatever, but it's YOU, still. That alone can make a story hit VERY differently.
Hard agree with everything here. I think it would've been a much stronger game without all of the typically horror sections, and what makes it so good is the way it unfolds. You can't really replicate what the game does here in a movie
I think the only plot hole is the fact the company loves putting codes in almost every thing intended for the captain only, except for the very important auto-pilot override which requires a key. That aside, I love the way symbolism is used.
the autopilot override is probably for when you absolutely have to take manual control over the ship, and in such cases you may or may not have enough time to get a code scanner or even the captain. Or, more likely, Pony Express didn't care enough to even think about that design choice
To be fair, you’d have to be a special kind of crazy and stupid (Jimmy) to willingly override navigation with malicious intent. Pony express cuts corners, so maybe they just figured A) Anyone trying to override the navigation would know what they are doing, and B) Had a good reason to do it. Maybe the logic was if the captain died or lost the scanner, the crew might still need to pilot the ship or manually take themselves off course.
Spoiler warning: I think Manly missed it and I see comments confused about the pregnancy. Anya asks the Captain "Why does the Sleeping Quarters not have a LOCK like Medical and the Cockpit?" If you put two and two together...
I was afraid of that, especially when she said she didn’t want Jimmy in there anymore… and with how Jimmy constantly belittles and puts her down, it doesn’t make sense that she’d sleep with him willingly…
@@nocanseegreen3845 At first it really seemed like Jim was hung up on his job being pulled out from under him. He talks about "climbing the ladder", how he didn't have luck with work while on Earth, and now all space transport jobs are automated. It seems Curly would have been fine, his years of service would guarantee him a decent job anywhere else. So Jim lashing out because of hurt / jealousy makes sense. But then you add this layer to it and it gets even darker.
This really puts into perspective that one saying i always hear “The greatest villains are the ones who think they’re doing the right thing.” It’s honestly horrifying knowing that he genuinely thought he was doing the right thing. Edit: thanks for the correction, i thought mortifying and horrifying were the same thing 😅
Because when you're trying to do the right things, you'd always justifying yourself. Look at all those feminist, DEI movement etc. They've done nothing but regressing a lot of progress.
Strange that Diasuke has to be put down in the state he's in becase of "infection" or whatever. Meanwhile curly has been laying there with his entire body flayed and exposed, missing every limb, with dirty bandages for at least 2 months (the dirty bandage that is), got his leg cut off with a dirty knife, and is fine. Well, not fine, but you get it. Alive.
Well, they couldn't stop the bleeding. They ran out of bandages trying to help Curly. So, it made more sense to just end it rather than having someone else suffer just like Curly.
Not only did they run out of bandages, but Anya took the remaining painkillers as well. With the isopropyl gone, there wasn't anything that he could be treated with outside of mouthwash (that can't do much). Maybe they could have tried to stitch him up or something if medical had anything like that, though it seemed like his neck got injured too.
@@l9324I agree, I really think that’s what it boiled down to. Swansea cared about Daisuke and took responsibility for his wellbeing. There were no resources left on the ship to help him by that point, and he couldn’t let him suffer.
The real devils in the game were the ones treating Anya's assault like a casual mistake. Doesn't matter how good of a caption you are if you lack that much empathy on such serious topic
It's the damning moment honestly, while ignoring it doesn't technically justify him being tortured (imo), it's the moment that shows Jimmy's delusion, selfishness, and that he's dangerous to others. If they had put Jimmy in a cell(or just locked him in a closet, whatever they had available) and kept an eye on him, none of this would have happened. And they probably could have started planning what they would do when they got off the ship, it still would have sucked since they all got laid off and Anya would have to choose whether to keep/end the pregnancy, they wouldn't have all died in horrific ways due to Jimmy continuing to be an evil bastard.
@@ConfusedLemons sadly anya wouldn't have a choice in the pregnancy - she's the only medic on the ship and said ship is still coursing for i think they said 8-10 months? yeah she's birthing that thing IN the ship
@@JawRippa that's true! but given how curly's whole torture process is representative of what anya would've had to go through i feel like in part the game is hinting that she would still have to bear the child imo
If you notice during the scene when curly gives the crew the news and jimmy lays into him the crew does not antagonize him or actively blame curly, the player as curly only feel like they do because of how the scene is framed, which is also made to likely emphasize how much curly lets jimmy get to him.
I’m, uh, not going to touch on everything that happened in this game because oof, but I will focus on one small thing since Manly took the idea a little seriously later: Pretty sure Jimmy didn’t actually like cartoon ponies. It’s clear he had no respect for Anya and gave that response to get back at her for some BS reasoning in his head. It’s also rather on-the-nose for a company that has a cartoon horse as the mascot. From what Curly suggested regarding their time on Earth, our protag has clearly made many such spiteful and shortsighted decisions before the events shown here.
Damn maybe to disresprect the person he SA. He tells HER that he actually likes ponies. so like downplaying the SA stuff. godawful person. jesus christ
I'm trying to think of the last time a story gripped me as much as this. I do think the ending was too drawn out, but that's a small criticism. Dude, if this was a movie, I think it would sweep all the awards and be an all-time classic. Not like video games can't be classics, but y'know what I mean.
Yeah, they honestly could of cut out a lot of the abstract weird stuff near the end and it still would have been a great story, like the entire vent scene, the graveyard(?) scene, etc
I think this story works the best as a videogame, mostly because i find that the more intimate you make the connection between consumer and media, the better this kind of story hits, and there is no way to make the experience more intimate than letting you take control (of the unreliable narrator/villain none the less) it makes the betrayal feel personal
the way jimmy sent daisuke to his likely death then proceeded to call swansey a monster for putting the poor boy out of his misery. augh. eugh. i came to watch the full game after seeing animations with "cw: jimmy" in them, and now i understand
Unfun fact: you can die from ingesting too much mouthwash and a lot of people do, because apparently some don't realize you're supposed to spit it out. My friend works at a hotel and had the misfortune to discover a deceased young client. No one could figure out how she passed away until the cops determined she got mouthwash poisoning, somehow.
Unless the client died of alcohol poisoning I don’t see how they’d die from simply swallowing mouthwash, speaking as an alcoholic who’s drunk this sh!t
one things for sure, Curly's definetly not getting out of this without issues. I especially love the hints and differences you notice comparing the leader methods between Jimmy and Curly( which gave hints on who actually crashed the ship) Curly was a realist yet had an optimistic attitude. He understood his crewmates and was much kinder to them and understanding. He had a futuristic view on that things will get better. Jimmy was harsher and couldnt take the pressure of the captains responsibilities. His pessimism and hostility brought the whole crew down(literally) and made everything worse. and man the unravelling at the end was so disturbing. I feel so bad for Curly. He's burned beyond recognition and witnessed in front of his eyes all his crewmates die. he had his own leg fed to him! How even survived that long is beyond me. One hope is that brain can protect you from trauma by dissociating and/or making you forget what happened, so he could be kind of alright from some of the worst of it. Many people forget years or decades of their lives bc of this
@@vl5164 If there was ever a sequel to this game I would like it to focus on a Curly that managed to get found and pulled out of isolation but developed traumatic induced amnesia where at first you do not even know who he is at the start and the game's story has you rediscovering it and trying to come to terms and moving on from it.
Spoiler warning: Watching Jimmy pressure Daisuke into the vents is the most stomach churning thing I’ve watched in forever. It literally makes me feel sick. Re-watching after the end is even worse. Jimmy just totally emotionally manipulates the hell out of him. Fucked up shit.
Jimmy is just fucked up person overall,he did unspeakable things to the whole crew while putting it out as a plan to save them all,he assaulted Anya, leading to her death,Curly suffered A LOT,Daisuke also got in the roundabout.
IKR. the way he keeps telling him it'll make Swansea proud when it's very clear Daisuke really holds Swansea in high regard and looks up to him -- it's sickening! and then he blames Daisuke and assumes Swansea was making the selfish choice.
Anya looks like a young Shelly Duvall, there's a recovering alcoholic wielding an axe, and the characters are isolated with cold all around them. It's a sendup to the Shining
Yknow what’s sad to think about? If Curly had waited to tell the crew about them losing their jobs when they were closer to completing their journey (like he was instructed to) this probably wouldn’t have happened. At least, not to the same extent. But Curly valued everyone on the crew too much to withhold things from them. And unfortunately he was blind and unaware of the monster one of them already was.
Something awful: during the horse fetus sequence the phrase that flashes on the screen is "i hope this hurts." This might be what Jimmy said to Anya when he did the bad thing to her. Really messed up.
Also there's the segment where you enter the medical room sideways. The vent near the corner is surrounded by axes forced into the wall, and the way they're laid out makes it so that they're all black except for the ones directly around the vent opening, which is highlighted by light and made bright red. Then you enter the vent and crawl around inside to find the horse fetus monster.
Yeah there were a lot of sections I thought resembled vaginal canals but for most of them I thought I was just thinking about it too hard, but around that section yea proooobably intentional. The thing with the xray or whatever DEFINITELY looked like the lips or whatever you call them. And the “I hope it hurts” reminded me of the scene in Revolutionary Girl Utena where we see Anthy in The Car (iykyk)
kinda love how the only guilt jimmy ever felt was daisukes death, even so, he never took blame for it but instead blamed swansea for ending daisukes suffering. its actually sad and emotional how in the section for swansea and daisuke theyre both together connected, with many memorials to daisuke but swansea as the bloody rage killer because the other things he did, he never felt bad about it, not a single memorial like daisukes one, because it was the only thing he couldnt "fix" himself
Also, Anya picked up on the months when Curly said they'd have 8 months until they were home. She'd be very pregnant by then, even she couldn't hide it "for Jimmy's sake". And if she doesn't want to deliver his kid, they might not have safe ways to yeet the baby before its born, so she might feel she'd be forced to be pregnant until they got home, and by then it'd be too late for her to opt out, she'd have to deliver. Poor Anya.

Daisuke was just a kid 😢
And the worst part is that he genuinely would've survived. The cryostasis pod was for him 😭
I feel bad for Curly, the guy got incapacitated, slowly tortured by Jimmy and then put in a pod while Jimmy gloats about having fixed everything.
@@Strix2031 Curly has his faults too but that’s what makes me love him more, if he realized what a huge problem Jimmy was he could have avoided the whole situation. Only after Jimmy caused the crash did Curly wise up but it was too late, his empathy costed him an arm and a leg *badum tsh*
Could I ask you to replace the term "narcissistic" with "self-centered" or "selfish" in your vocabulary?
Really glad you pointed this out!
*smashes fist onto desk*
THANK YOU.

(I just found out what jimmy was and I am NOT defending him.)
i think curly laughed when jimmy grabbed the gun because he was just so appalled at the fact that jimmy had done all of this. if he had just given anya the gun and not trusted his friend, the outcome would have been so much different…
I saw some tiktok about the box lying down and it made me realise that Anya may have wanted to shoot Jimmy or herself as a way to end things; thus why the box was in the open when Jimmy got in there later on

Honestly, my favourite part about this story is the banality of the evil. The Pony Express is an incompetent and careless but otherwise normal corporation. There’s nothing supernatural that is scary, there’s no big conspiracy. The villain is just one nasty, human, scumbag
maybe, JUST maybe, the story was trying to get Jimmy and Pony Express to merge concepts, what I mean is, Jimmy is very very often mentioned along with horses
-He's into horses joke
-the scene after Jimmy set the ship for the asteroid ends with horses
-And The Annya scene, where you aim at horse fetuses, might be the most obvious one,
Jimmy, is the horse, and the horse is often said to be incompetent and all, while Jimmy repeats to himself that's he's competent, and is going to fix it everything.
nice metaphors there
@@justanotaku1420 I think the common thread is the draconian, abusive attitude the company and Jimmy share.
A bigger hive of villainy you'll not find this side of the galaxy.

the sweetener being restricted for special occasions in a ship full of grown ass adults is really funny to me for some reason
Coupled with the fact that Daisuke actually stole and held onto some of it like a freaking contraband item lol
I know neither of you have had an office job because sugar is absolutely an essential presence in appeasing employees (I say this lightheartedly not conspiratorially lol)
It was restricted from daisuke 😭
hes totally eating that sweetener jhonny jhonny yes papa style

Well best we can hope is they look at the order of how people died and just deem jimmy as some serial killer, I mean there's no way curly could have kept himself alive for that long and then taken his own skin and limbs, plus most deaths could be seen as done by jimmy, meaning curly is probably seen as just a victim in all of this
i dont think its likely seeing the state poor jimmy was left in, all of the blame would be redirected back at jimmy

All characters failed their parts in a way, apparently curly was a great captain, but in the end he was too soft to get rid of jimmy, he valued his friendship more than the safety of the crew, and that ended up killing everyone
The fact Curly immediately knew it was Jimmy who assaulted Anya, after she told him she was pregnant, was very telling.
Anya the medic was too scared to care for curly. The mechanic fell to his addiction. The apprentice was too naive. They all fell to their flaws.
I agree with you that Curly was too soft but what were they going to do with Jimmy while they're in the middle of nowhere half way through a year long voyage?
@@mikelikegaming remember the gun and the corporate note that came with it? Yeah
They also threw Daiskue on last minute, no cryo pod for him, they probably didnt account for his allotment of food either

He has no remorse over his actions towards her and doesn't even acknowledge her after she dies, she is (and by extension the baby is) simply a "problem" that has been "fixed" in his eyes.
and he's still thinking about _him_
The scene where Curly gives Jimmy the psyc test is probably also a hint that it was Jimmy that caused the hole thing, Jimmy sits in the left chair and in the opening scene the protagonist also sits in the left chair
What i don't get are the Curly hallucinations
I wonder Jimmy would have passed the psych eval with someone else giving it to him if he actually gave straight answers to anyone but Curly

I loved this comment so much that I paced around my house for five minutes making every connection between this game and IHNMAIMS possible
I personally believe that he caused that whole crash so he can be a "hero."
I read a short story about this man who was poor that had a brother who had a stable income.
Brilliantly said.

yeah no wonder game is titled "mouthwashing" because it's what Jimmy was doing.

Jimmy just blaming everyone but himself for things they didn't do.

He doesnt blame himself- and dooms a man to either waking up in 20 years and slowly dying alone or being found and having to live with everything he likely blames himself for

@@ChocoRainbowCornyes, he did the crash and blamed it on Curly.
And he cant look away from the horrors in front of him
And he can see Jimmy for what he is, and keeps staring at him.
He can still move his head. He can nod or shake it. It’s limited, but he’s capable of communicating. It’s just that no one bothered to ask him.
it’s no wonder ayna didn’t want to give him the painkillers- she had been rendered helpless and unable to communicate by jimmy when he assaulted her. she didn’t want to give that same experience to curly :(
I find it interesting that everything REALLLY started going to shit the moment Jimmy got his grubby little hands on the code scanner. The moment he ACTUALLY has the ability to do anything around the ship he fucks everything up.
Like everyone seemed to be surviving okay for two whole months until then.
"when you have a hammer, everything looks like nails"ass protagonist

People are feeling bad that curly will have to spend another 20 years in the Cryo pod, but maybe, just maybe, pony express will realise one of their ships hasn't made any deliveries or come back yet, Swanseas or Daisukes families will complain about their absence, it would probably catch the eye of the press and there would probably be a long space search for the Tulpar ship.
Only if the universe the story is set in is not a corporate dictatorship dystopia...
@@FrstSpctr88 I don't think we have enough evidence of the world being like that but that would be terrifying. 💀

Really ironic
Hmm interesting!
Imho, more like protag mouthwashed all his evil deeds to look clean, while his breath are still rancid.
They make that a point in the story

It's nice to see that allot of horror-genre youtubers also enjoy watching Manly!
Manly, the guy liked by Man(l)y
I didn't expect to find you here.
It feels so accurate that you’d watch manly 😂
I like how the game on the table is "Sorry!" It's a variation of games like Ludo and Parcheesi, but specifically named Sorry! because of the ways you'll ruin each others' progress without anything other than an empty apology. It's a part of the game, after all. It's fitting considering how much Jimmy apologizes in the final act of the game. He can cry and say sorry as much as he wants but his words ring hollow.
i like that you pointed this out because it made me think about the cutscene with polly & jimmy, after polly basically mocks him and says "sorry!". possibly related!
UGH THANK YOU FOR THIS that hadn’t even occurred to me, the metaphors in this game go crazyyy
"Our worst moments don't make us monsters," says man who only has worst moments.
(OG comment: "Our worst moments don't make us monsters," says man whose worst moments make him a monster.)
The unsaid part of that is you can still be a monster. It's just other stuff that does it!
Our worst moments don't make us monsters, but they sure can be an indicator of monsterhood
That's just a full blown narcissist move, stealing other peoples (Anya) quotes for use in their own fucked world. I actually know some "person" IRL a lot like Jimmy and they have done that same shit, along with a lot of the rest of Jimmys other mental gymnastics
its real fucked up how jimmy reuses(and repurposes) this line from anya, the woman he assaulted and A doesn’t want to acknowledge her death and B does not care about the baby
he quite literally had only worst moments he cannot speak
I liked the part where Jimmy is backing away from responsibility while still having to be looking at it. Hes so obessed with the idea hes being forced to take responsibility, being forced to be the mature one who figures everything out, but ultimately hes still just walking away from it.
That is a great catch! Man, between the dialogue (like the dead pixel scene) and the camera angles and the sound design, they really packed this game to the brim with symbolism.
Anya kinda looks like Shelley Duvall (the actor who played wendy from the shining) i wonder if that was intentional
it was!
May she rest in peace
I also noticed it. And not only appearance, the attitude at the beginning of the movie... nervous, jumpy, fatigued, yet trying to remain hope
I thought the same thing omg
Definitely feels intentional, especially when it also ends with the antagonist chasing the protagonist with an axe and smashing through a door with it. Although, with a twist, because this time the protagonist is the monster and the antagonist is a hero.
the visual foreshadowing in this game is really subtle sometimes and insanely good. especially foreshadowing / hinting to themes of SA. a lot of the imagery hits different when you keep that in mind while rewatching. this game is a really incredible piece of art
The whole "Take responsability" takes a whole fucked up meaning after the pregnancy reveal
Imagine how darkly funny it would've been if the cryopod door closed, curly turns to the side to see a sticky note from Swansea or Daisuke saying "Cryo pod not working, misters work but can't get it to freeze, will fix when we get home."

I was already thinking how "poetic" it would be
At least one passess out first when they freeze to death- and in that state, it would be the last mercy for Curly, the man with no future left inside a escape meant for a dead intern who had so much life in front of him
I honestly thought he ended himself before turning the cryopod on lol. Like he couldn't even get that right
I thought so too!

But I feel like Curly (and possibly the rest of the crew) failed anya by letting jimmy get away with what he did to her,had they locked him away or got rid of him in any other manner all of this could of been avoided.
you got also to take into account that this all takes place once they are fired.
@@Nevernamed I think so too, I would say he was in denial about his friendship with Jimmy as a whole the way he would brush off his blatant jealous comments, him twisting his words around to make him look like the bad guy after he drops the news about lay offs, no judgement I've been in toxic friendships longer than I should've too

here he justified his actions bc "[he] was going to fix everything and swansea opposed/doubted/etc [him]" again
with curly he made up a whole conversation where *both* curly still suggested he'd be the villain so jimmy would be the hero AND his apology got (kinda) accepted

That alone can make a story hit VERY differently.
definitely agree!! i love The Thing so much, one of my fav movies ever i just loved the suspense and the whole execution in my opinion was amazing !!!
Or, more likely, Pony Express didn't care enough to even think about that design choice
i figure it was bc ut was intended for use by both pilot/captain and copilot, w/ the latter lacking a scanner
Really helped it come together. Makes it even worse, if it can already be worse
seemed weird that a crewmember pregnancy would somehow ruin the captain's career without that part, idk how I missed it
@@nocanseegreen3845 At first it really seemed like Jim was hung up on his job being pulled out from under him. He talks about "climbing the ladder", how he didn't have luck with work while on Earth, and now all space transport jobs are automated. Nothing can describe such insanity. The worst part is that the story is fairly realistic in every aspect.

Swansea cared about daisuke.
Jimmy was responsible for curly.
There were no resources left on the ship to help him by that point, and he couldn’t let him suffer.
the only person with medical training was dead at that point, I don't blame swansea
I find it fascinating that at the very end, even with repeated promises, Jimmy would rather die than take responsibility for any of his actions

And they probably could have started planning what they would do when they got off the ship, it still would have sucked since they all got laid off and Anya would have to choose whether to keep/end the pregnancy, they wouldn't have all died in horrific ways due to Jimmy continuing to be an evil bastard.

i think you are getting a bit too into your own head if you think he is the real villain instead of the person who ACTUALLY DID THE DEED
If you notice during the scene when curly gives the crew the news and jimmy lays into him the crew does not antagonize him or actively blame curly, the player as curly only feel like they do because of how the scene is framed, which is also made to likely emphasize how much curly lets jimmy get to him.
I’m, uh, not going to touch on everything that happened in this game because oof, but I will focus on one small thing since Manly took the idea a little seriously later:
Pretty sure Jimmy didn’t actually like cartoon ponies. It’s clear he had no respect for Anya and gave that response to get back at her for some BS reasoning in his head. It’s also rather on-the-nose for a company that has a cartoon horse as the mascot.
From what Curly suggested regarding their time on Earth, our protag has clearly made many such spiteful and shortsighted decisions before the events shown here.
this is so obvious it didn’t even have to be mentioned…….

OMG no, it needs to be a TV show, because there are too many twists and too many important moments.

@@KRYoung_dev yeah no it doesn't need to be. The mroe you overdo it the less special it becomes. Think of iron lung.
I think this story works the best as a videogame, mostly because i find that the more intimate you make the connection between consumer and media, the better this kind of story hits, and there is no way to make the experience more intimate than letting you take control (of the unreliable narrator/villain none the less) it makes the betrayal feel personal
The way Jimmy knew the vent was *even more* beyond repair after the wreck, yet still forced Daisuke in, is insane
the way jimmy sent daisuke to his likely death then proceeded to call swansey a monster for putting the poor boy out of his misery. augh. eugh. i came to watch the full game after seeing animations with "cw: jimmy" in them, and now i understand

Its no ones fault but jimmys
He valued everyone but Anya, apparently
Something awful: during the horse fetus sequence the phrase that flashes on the screen is "i hope this hurts." This might be what Jimmy said to Anya when he did the bad thing to her. Really messed up.
Yeah, and in that sequence when the fetus was about to come out it sounded like a grown woman's crying. Graphic.

Also, Anya picked up on the months when Curly said they'd have 8 months until they were home. She'd be very pregnant by then, even she couldn't hide it "for Jimmy's sake".
