For those that don’t know, if illegal activity is involved, then NDAs are immediately voided and not upheld in court. The protag had no legal obligation to keep his mouth shut the moment a body rolled over that chipper.
Yea. Now, he's kinda screwed in this situation anyway, because he has no way to call out, he's locked in, the company put in an "insurance" policy with the parasite (Because even they know an NDA is not enough), and they knew he was desperate enough to do this so they're heavily leaning on that psychologically.
If you think him taking meat intended for zoo animals and giving it to his family wasn't stupid enough remember he has a camera strapped to his chest so they know he did that
and then he still says "So you think that because I'm poor that means I'm stupid?" No sir, being poor has nothing to do with being stupid. but yes, you are in fact very stupid.
Nevermind animal grade. What gets me is he literally has no idea what it actually is, which obviously comes back to bite him later. Literal mystery meat.
ok to be fair the real horror story started for me not when you had to kill that woman but when i realized that they just let you walk into the gorilla enclosure and that its made up entirely of male silverbacks.
silverbacks arent actually that aggressive or dangerous. as long as you act proper they are one of the least likely monkeys to tear you up. only beating by orangutans. now if it was chimpanzees...that would be terrifying
Not just the gorilla (which is already insane) but imagine getting kicked hard by a giraffe because you jabbed it with a needle from behind. Like, I’m already scared of chimps, no virus needed. :’) Would rather die than be told to walk into an enclosure with 5 chimps and to get blood from each one while they’re awake. Or at least, die without having my face and limbs torn off

Too many horror game protagonists are just kind of.. I dunno, dumb? I know it's for story purposes and immersion, but ironically, this takes the immersion _away_ from people. Like, come on. You were locked up the whole night with an boss that knows far too much about you, is rude, has injected you with weird stuff and made you sign an NDA. Later you also found out you are working with actual mutant monsters and that you are feeding the animals other people.. Worse yet, you have given this to your wife and kid. Desperate times call for desperate measures but this is too much man. Even for the already highly suspicious pay as well, in addition to everything else. The moment that guy injected him with stuff for transporting our protag to the workplace is the moment I'm leaving and screw whatever paper I have signed.
"Scientists? I thought this was a zoo!" I mean... _legitimate_ zoos that do conservation work _do_ have scientists. Same with aquariums. Zoos make money via pandering to guests, sure, but the good ones put that money to work helping animals.
@@sharkiebites5601 Given some of the... stilted (?) dialogue, i wonder if the game wasn't written by native english speakers and maybe their original language has two different words for "stereotypical [mad] scientists in a lab working with chemicals for experiments" vs. "zoologist/biologist/conservationist that studies and/or helps animals", and then translated the first word into just "scientists" without knowing that the term also refers to the latter group of researchers in English.
Pfft this was also my first thought as someone studying biology rn to hopefully become a vet technologist. My goal is to work in wildlife rehabilitation or help treat exotic animals in zoos. The idea that zoos have no scientists on staff unintentionally made me laugh because I sure as hell am working for this science degree for a reason 😂
I find it funny that the mutated animals just go right back to being normal as if they didnt just have their flesh ripped apart and had loads of teeth lined among them
The main character gets jumped by his boss and, without warning, injected with an unknown syringe that causes him to go unconscious, and somehow he accepts that as appropriate workplace procedure. Edit: I am referring to battery, not whatever most of you in the comments are on about.
All the guy had to do was say “To work around the animals, you need a vitamin shot to boost your immune system.” and he likely would’ve rolled up his sleeve right then and there. There was no need to do all that.
say what you will about how well this game lives up to the expectations, but as someone who has formerly studied zookeeping and even been an intern at a zoo the REAL horror here is the absolute complete lack of safety protocols regarding the animals.
Yeah, as someone who worked at a zoo with giraffes and saw someone get kicked by one, when he first approached the giraffes, I literally felt all my muscles tense. This is why we have protected contact for a reason.
Not even five minutes in and I'm already glad you took the bullet for me on this one. I see from the comments that the original writer may have died before this was finished and well... ten minutes in and I'm already mentally checked out and debating against even finishing this video. I liked the original idea, I still do, but I'm sorry this sucks. Either the original writer didn't get very far before he died or he was not as good as he was made out to be... - If you're going to make a "devil's contract", do not write it like the game did here. No one writes a contract like that because no one in their right mind would sign it. Not only that but the whole exchange and the tutorial that follows just leads to further questions and not in a good way. - $100,000 USD a year turns out to be a little over $50 USD an hour before taxes, which sadly one of the few things about "blue collar horror" this game got right. In most places, that's actually insanely good money for a job that apparently requires very little post-secondary education of any kind if Paul could get past the interview with just six months of chemical engineering courses and seemingly no formal training in more relevant zoological trades. But unfortunately it just adds further questions. - In the better games Manly has played, you're asking questions because you want to know more and see what happens next. Here we're asking questions because nothing makes any logical sense either internally or externally. How did Paul even know about this job posting in the first place? If the pay's that good then why isn't he fighting dozens of other hopefuls? Why is he surprised that Doc knows about his college education? Did he not submit a resume or omit that from the resume? If he didn't then how did Paul even get here? - I could go on but ultimately this feels like the middle or last two-thirds of a movie, a particularly BAD movie. Which is a pity because I like the mechanics and I like the core idea. They need to be tightened a bit but I feel we have some potential here. Or at least had.
Yeah, like seeing that "in memory of" for the writer in the credits just made me think "well, that could explain some things, I would not be surprised if they just got someone who knew nothing about telling a story to fill in any blanks".
@@fallouthirteen I imagine that after Dagan passed away, the rest of the devs lost steam and just rushed the game out. I also heard that this game was his passion project, which if true, explains why nobody else knew what to do with what was left.
I'd also like to point out that it's 100k per year in 1991 (according to the TIS). Now obviously speaking, 100k per year is great no matter what, but 100k per year could put you firmly in a lower end upper class lifestyle back then. The fact that Paul was seemingly the only guy there to take such an easy job with such a high pay is just confusing no matter how it's written.

This game isn't just broken but the monsters just don't feel threatening whatsoever. They appear, scream, then run in circles in the habitats while the player awkwardly walks around trying to collect blood samples for the munition to put down the monster. Every few minutes minutes it'll maybe grab an animal for a moment or push over the player, but they're so poorly designed from a gameplay perspective that their designs feel wasted. Not to mention the trashy writing being a general immersion killer
Yeah ngl I was expecting the animals to be a lot more threatening. I was expecting them to have different tactics on how to take them down, like have us be more stealthy for the gorilla's or use bait for the penguins
The infected don't have a interesting opening either like they just scream and run away and do their little animation. I felt the most tense at the start when collecting samples because what if the animals transform before I am prepared? They should have leaned into that more and have the animals exhibit weird behavior like in the trailer.
The writing is trashy because the original writer died before being able to complete the game, and other members of the team had to step in to try to fill the gaps. Thats why its choppy and exposition heavy, its hard to fill in someone elses creative writing when theyre no longer a source. The shoddy execution has no excuses however, the game needs way more time in the oven
The most fictitious part of this entire game is a struggling father risking his new job by stealing mystery zoo meat to feed his kids. "What do you mean the girls got worse? That meat had SO much tranqulizer in it"
Also I'm assuming this take place in the USA, so you can EASILY afford meat. It's cheaper than McDonald's. So there is literally NOT A SINGLE reason to do it. Unless someone is just a criminal and thief, and just can't help themselves from stealing things.
This is one of the big problems I (and it seems many others) have with this story. The guy says that his family is eating pre-packaged meals and the main reason he steals the meat is for his family to eat something "good" for once. The guy is supposed to be at least somewhat educated, he's 6 months of work/education with chemicals in the past according to the story and he just thinks it's fine to take what is could easily be assumed to be the unwanted byproducts of slaughter houses and who knows what else mixed in for his family. We find out that it's people, but even prior to that it's a terrible idea. Also, I get that it's so this plot point can happen(and is likely intended to imply he's got a plan and wants her to try to talk to him) but it makes the MC look and sound like an asshole when he says "let my wife stick around, she'll figure out she needs to go home eventually."
@@attaugExactly. It's so weird. And it's not just the health concerns for his very sickly daughter either. From his perspective, he is literally one day away from getting a good salary, a company car and whatnot. Do this job once and when they give you that company car, ask for a bloody advance on your pay. Although I have to say, after all that, I'd have told my wife to take the daughter and run. This was so clearly a death trap.
@@attaug To be fair animal food has WAY better quality and is MUCH healthier because of 0 chemicals in it and being 100% natural ingredients, than human food (wich is quit ironic) because of the strict laws surrounding it, at least in EU dont know about US, i dont think the US has strict rules for anything. If there is ever a apocalypse steal animal food sounds disgusting but it is much better with proteins, nutrients, durability and quality overall, dog food is a good example it smells bad and probably taste very bad but this is high quality food which will give everything your body needs and will fill you up.
Ngl that game was a huge disappointment. Shame the screenwriter died, I think he was onto something great there. 1. They animated the transformation of the giraffe in the trailer. They got rid of ALL transformation animations. That is a horrendous letdown. 2. The MC is a dumbass. For someone who seems to have experience with chemicals, feeding his own family a slab of meat prepared for animals is the biggest dumbassery I could ever imagine. 3. The transformed animals are absolutely soulless and not in the slightest bit threatening. They just rund around like wild chickens and if they happen to catch you oh well you're stunned for a sec. 4. Multiple runs would have been acceptable if it was something like a roguelike. You need to be able to cure every animal without getting hit at all to finish the game. And everytime you restart the order of the animals is random. 5. The meat mechanic was absolutely useless if you have tranquilizers. Unless that is relevant for the story how much crime you'll end up doing, that is a letdown. 6. And those grizzly static animations to skip actually animating is just a whole lot of a yikes. Sorry to the developers but the trailer was great- the game isn't.
I don't think there was ever a transformation animation in-game. The trailer presented an overly ambitious version of the game, clearly animated by a separate team, most probably using modified versions of the models that would simply be impossible to animate by the dev team. It feels like more money went into the marketing than the game itself. I knew from the first gameplay reveal that it wasn't going to be very good
Losing their writer was like a major blow, on top of just losing their freind. I really hope they take the feedback and make badly needed changes. So much potential. But losing a team mate to death may have been enough to end it. Understandably, as mourning is no joke. But they need to be honest about it and lower the price to meet the game where it ended up. I just feel so bad for the team losing their freind.
@@kurokagator4567 I rewatched all trailers - the scene you're talking about doesn't actually show any animated transformation - it just cleverly jumpcuts to giraffe transformed. I can see how people remember watching it transform, but it actually never happened. There is one in game trailer, that has an actual caption, that it's an in game recording, and it's just as borin as the finished product. All the other trailers were actually cinematic trailers, completely misleading.

To be fair, they injected him with enough knockout juice to kill an elephant (and gave him a deadly, mutagenic, experimental parasite) right after he signed their contract, nobody is patient in this universe
Also, it had to be the weird meat that they have no animal to feed to? I'd have taken a look at the animals they care for and asked why they even have meat! Even if you don't know your animals, the recipes make it pretty darn clear that something is up.
@@JuMiKu I'm not excusing his stupidity. but It's totally believable that there are other animals that he isn't assigned to, and zookeepers that oversee them. On his first night, there being carnivores that he isn't assigned to look after isn't that crazy of an idea.
This is life and death. And Paul didn't had information at that time, although he could've just suspected and didn't give it. But y'know Paul is desperate.
@@lweaver2988Naw that doesn't float. In reality we just call that poor writing. This is some weird Sci Fi retro future zoo with parasites. In a story/game like this if it isn't shown or explained, it doesn't exist. I can't be expected to make a leap of faith into some weird game world where reality/logic doesn't apply, but also be expected to just excuse dumbass behavior because "something plausible" MAY exist. If my first reaction is "Uh why would you do that?!" then the writer needs to account for and explain that. The OP could also be absolutely correct in that this could be specifically written as a red flag. I could also point out that the MC can already see through the terminal that there are animals he doesn't have access to. Given the meat doesn't make sense, let alone stealing it on your first day. If he's desperate and willing to ignore those signs it should be expressed better. There's a world of difference between what I'd be willing to do to feed my starving family, and what I'd be willing to do to feed my on a poor diet.
I can tell something is wrong with this place considering the fact that at 19:09 on the left hand side there are pallets stacked sideways, that is an osha violation and pallets are supposed to be stacked flat, many places still do this wrong but they arent supposed to.
I think the door leading directly into the pen full of nothing but male gorillas that you're told to just casually stroll through may also be an OSHA violation.
I always appreciate how methodically Manly is with the games he plays. He handled the pressure of curing the infected animals before they could kill any of their enclosure buddies pretty well.
Yeah no offense to some other RUclipsrs but Manly is the only one who isn't infuriating to watch when playing horro games and its why I stay subscribed to him.
I don’t necessarily like that they put a body cam on the player then drug him… specifically how it’s portrayed visually. Camera glitches would’ve been great to mask the transition, but instead we get the classic fade in and out of consciousness… but we’ve *just* been told it’s a camera.
Yeah, this game really doesn't take advantage of the fact that it's on a body cam. Like what was the point if you're gonna treat it like a first person view anyway?
It really feels like the bodycam is just a cheap excuse to have static cover the mutated animals transforming back. And that would be fine, if the game was actually consistent about everything we see being from the perspective of the camera.

Fun fact: NDAs do not prevent employees from reporting companies for criminal actions...so the threat of the NDA wouldnt even of worked had Paul known that....
Yes the NDA is the reason why he didn't report his boss, who knows every detail of his entire life as well as his family's and kidnaps and throws people into a meat grinder for animal feed, to the authorities.
Small detail but the fact that you have to PULL the gadget trolley rather than push it to the enclosure is evil. You don't get to see where you are going.
I was hoping to see that exploited in some way in this and JackSepticEye’s playthrough, like instead of one of the mutations being revealed around a corner, one of them turns a corner to chase _you_ as you’re pulling your cart. You can either try to lug your cart with you into the nearest door, or immediately sprint away to hide or get your gadgets later.
Its weird because that is a very cool detail that helps make the initial tension of the game start strong. But its never actually used in a form that matters where you hear a mutation behind you.
Not only that, imagine needing money urgently and then the microsecond you are left alone in your new job the first thing you do is steal 6kg of meat, this guy is stupid

I had the same thought. I guess the family is just that desperate for food due to their poverty. He’s still dumb of course, but I guess it makes sense given his situation.
Indeed, however the tactic of making people sign contracts with invalid clauses and them acting like it’s valid to convince them is a tactic used in the real world quite frequently
Also aren't NDA's mostly a scare tactic. Cause if I'm not mistaken you can still report to the police or what not if the company is doing wrong and dangerous things if you signed an NDA.
Slight pet peeve of mine. It'd at least be better if games acknowledged, maybe as a reveal or at the end, that contracts don't cover signing away basic rights or if an employer is doing something illegal.
What was even the point of taking the protag's phone if there is one in the zoo? It's not like it's a closed network too, the other guy's wife was able to call just fine
I was watching Slimecicle’s run before this one and he had noticed that the zoo’s phone had no buttons. So I guess the goal was to keep the protagonist himself from calling the police or something.
The monster design is really cool, hope it gets fixed. Also it's always a special kind of sad when a person that participates in a project like that dies before it's finished. Not only is it hard enough to deal with the grief and the knowledge that that person might never see what they had their hand in complete, but the pressure to finish the project anyways might make it even harder to put out something polished. I wish it was more accepted that your work doesn't need to be put out so fast that you need to not care for yourself first...
This is already a sketchy af team anyway, look at sparky marky or whatever dumbA name their first game was. That was sooo awful! I had flash backs when manly pointed them out on the fridge, it was like "Oh god SO this is the game people were talking about?" People were saying they were hoping the team would create a story/game they actually cared about instead of trying to make it like an nft project or whatever sparky mark was supposed to be. It was very obvious there was NO love put into that game. So to see this ... ugh.. it was interesting, but more in the sense of a working sim than a horror game, hopefully that makes sense. It lacks a bit of polish, like it just needed a bit more time to work on animations.

I don't like this trope of "desperate man in need of a job because his family situation". In the trailer protagonist had carefree attitude to this job and when animals transforming he was more chill: "Damn giraffe turns into spider again, better act quick" He wasn't acting like every horror mc when they see slightly deformed zombie.

Like, I get it, you're desperate, but you can make much more in those same hazardous conditions elsewhere-- like an oil rig, or even as a cop in many states.
yeah, they could maybe make the protagonist a biologist or something working there. The protagonist could already know what's happening, but keeping vague to us at least in the begging. Also probably explain why some animals are so calm with the protagonist, it's a zoo i get, but the animal just have enough trust to even allow petting?

@@Mrhouse-k1x The voice or the words? Because I know they lost a member of their studio, so using machines for his lines is fair, but the words themselves feel very stiff and unnatural.
Forget getting kicked, I work with a zoo and they stress to us not only to avoid getting into an enclosure with the giraffes but that their necks should be avoided at all costs. Giraffes wack each other with their necks and Ossicones during fights and displays of dominance- now imagine a squishy human getting hit with the force that can knock another off their feet let alone be deadly to another giraffe. Yeah, if it weren’t the fact knock-off Guillermo “deadman” Del Toro would put us in a food processor I would stay *MILES* away from this zoo.
Sidenote, what sane person gives their family random food that was meant for animals? Like he's legit stealing it and not even checking it or anything.

The thing that irritates me most about this type of game is when they don’t have options to do the morally right thing, let alone any of the crazy stuff real humans might do. You can’t even try to use the phones to call the cops, you can’t slug the ‘doctor’ when he grabs your arm (which is what I’d do to anyone who suddenly grabbed me), you can’t inject yourself with the parasite cure, you can’t try to make your own way out… Bruh.
I feel like the main character was a little too okay with grinding up a human body even if he thought she was dead at first. Volate the NDA and sue the hell out of this place. It's not worth your morals.
Looking at this story makes me think it wants you to turn your brain off, so you just accept the story as-is while only asking the questions you’re expected to…while not addressing questions you _would_ have (i.e. “Should Paul be more worried he just got drugged for an ‘interview’?” or “Should Paul/we be _more_ worried we’re walking into an enclosure full of straight up gorillas?”)
Watching this game made me realize if someone made a zookeeper game and played it straight where you can walk around and pet exotic animals they'd get every animal lover on the internet.
I was SO happy to see you doing your absolute best to cure the animals, so far everyone I've watched has been shooting them dead instead... Hope you had a good rest, Manly! Now if only the other people in the actual game were as good as you : p
Major critique on the writing I’m 20 minutes in, the main character is absurd. Like I guess the reason he didn’t have the other guy tell the wife to leave was so that our main character could sneak her the meat. But like animal feed is very often dosed with antibiotics or extra nutrients or whatnot that is not fit for human consumption, it dosnt make sense why someone would willingly feed that to their sick child especially someone who seemed well educated. Like??? I know it’s for plot reasons so the family could get sick or mutated but it feels like such a stupid thing to do and our MC has thus been rather level headed if not desperate. Like either there needs to be more set up for the min character’s desperation for food (maybe emphasis on the kids condition or a side remark from our tutorial guide that ‘you look really thin’) anything. That or like have our Mc be more of an idiot, show more evidence he is so deeply unqualified for this position that hiring him is a sighn of a currupt company. OR EVEN SIMPLER HAVE THE TUTORIAL GUIDE STATE SOMETHING LIKE “we treat our animals good here, that meat is higher quality then what you could find in most grocery stores” (which would imply the meat is at least potentially fit for human consumption) I know this is a nitpick but it immediately stopped being believable for me when our main character did this
@@mrcrazyattire723 I haven’t seen anything credible about that case. My point still stands that if you are in a zoo and you see a prepackaged slab of meat you shouldn’t feed it to your wife and kids and most sane people would at least check what’s in it first. If the writers of this game was willing to write our mc getting grossed out that he has to look at fecal samples (something he should have realized when sighing up for a job relating to animals) then I think it’s pretty in character for him to be wary about mystery meat slabs. Like he has a sick child he supposedly cares for. I’m not saying the plot point itself needs to be removed there are ways to set it up better (like I wrote above having the tutorial character mention the meats quality or having it better emphasized that our mc is desperate for food.) like for me this was just the final push that broke my immersion. Like you telling me there’s this guy who called a suicide hotline who is desperate for money who sighns for a shady job interview at night and if he even reads the contract will get murdered , and he’s so desperate for money he can’t even feed his dying child proper food so he turns to trying to feed his family mystery meat, the same guy who’s that desperate has complaints about animal poop… I dunno it’s just one to many plot contrivances and horror game tropes for me to get into the story
When mc told doc not to tell his wife to leave I immediately knew something was wrong... Seriously this is such a lazy writing. I mean you get paid a lot of money but you still decide to steal meat of unknown origin on the first day... I just screamed NO. It ruins the whole atmosphere. Well at least we can ignore the wife, but it's not obvious what this will lead to
I don't think that dialogue is really bad, it's decent for the indi horror game, but one thing that feels really strange is that doc voice actor barely makes pauses between sentences. It's like there is no periods at all. Paul actor don't have such problem
@@invadernav3422 glad you're bringing this up, i had that feeling too. i don't like to assume everything that is lackluster is ai, but the voice acting in this game was just... off.
It really sounds like AI, but that’s only because I haven’t looked up all but one of the VA’s details. Tim Stephenson is the dude voicing Doc, and he’s got a website and a small youtube channel under his name. He sounds exactly like he does in the beginning of the game. The weird lack of pauses sound more like poorly edited dialogue, with everyone’s stiff delivery being something I’d sooner put fault into whoever was directing the VAs. I wouldn’t doubt it if Clapperhead used AI Voices - again - but I’m on the fence on if they did or not. I can only say in confidence that Tim Stephenson is a real human.
@galloviking4766 Huh thats...actually a bit fair. Though size differences are a issue. Not sure on how specialized antibiotics for other mammals is in variation as of yet since our understanding of gut flora is still pretty new.
Real, I feel like they should’ve made so she hasn’t eat in couple days/weeks, it would make more sense that he gave them meat if they were genuinely starting to starve but he says that they have meals, idk why this educated man for this kind of crap would willingly give his daughter animal meat for sick animals😭

It really feels like there is less in the actual game than what was shown in the trailer which is a pity. The infected designs are great but the game itself feels lackluster.
Very interesting idea for a game but such a poor execution, gameplay is simply not fun nor scary for the eyes, the fact that you can see how in the first enclosure the ai is malfuctioning in such a simple layout tells you that this wasn't ready for release, such a pity for a cool idea :/
Also the animals mutating is predictable it’s not a jump scare it’s just the same thing where you hear a scream then you see it and it runs back into the enclosure then it’s the same boss fight lol

Another "work simulator" horror game ... I really thought it would be another kind of game. The trailers were soo cool. The whole concept is great, but the game itself not so much ... maybe if the encounters were more like puzzles (a different one for each animal) or if the gameplay actually revolved around finding the infected ones and the kind of parasite that is infecting them (using clues, examination tools, and actions that made them weird) (kinda like Phasmophobia), it would be better ... but that's just me ... I don't really like this genre. Is good in short dosis (like in some 20 minutes long horror videogames), but over an hour of this is too much
i think having it be more of a puzzle would be great! maybe you do your exams, then you have to decide if it's an actual infection or the parasite. if you're right, nothing bad happens. if you're wrong, it mutates and kills the other animals/you.
Playing as a vet having to get close to the animals and actually diagnose them would have been FAR more interesting. Or even like what I thought the trailers implied, we would have to find the mutants who were hiding from us. The gameplay of this game just seems boring in general, and doesn't do much to help the opinion of work horror.
I hate how people think desperate, poor people are stupid too. They make dumb decisions because they don't have any other better option. This guy though? He literally had to survive one night my guy, then that paycheck is all his. Their family isn't even starving. He had a chemical engineering background, so he should know or at LEAST figure out through common sense that food given to animals in zoo are not graded for human consumption. Whatever leftover animal meat is being grinded into one big, vague meat slab, are you sure that sounds delicious?

The game starts with doc training sometime to be his backup. Here’s how you do this extra work so now I can go home and sleep because it’s too much work for just 1 person. And then he goes home after presumable a full day of work and is just micro managing prank calling the protag for his entire shift. And then he’s back at work in the morning. Then it’s revealed this is just what he does. When does he sleep?
the most unrealistic part about this game is why would a zookeeper willingly go into an animals cage????? half, if not all, of these animals would and could kill you i just don't understand 😭
FOR REAL. the only animal i can see on the entire list that wouldn't be insanely dangerous to be in the enclosure with is the penguins, maybe the wallabies
@@tehrealcoralsnek7044 as an australian, no, the wallabies are incredibly dangerous, i repeat, very dangerous. a couple of years ago a jogger got beaten and torn to pieces by a bunch of wallabies (they are known for being very aggressive).
Every time I saw a trailer for this game I always came away wondering how the actual gameplay would be since everything seemed to be either extremely on rails or a scripted set piece. Never had a good feeling about it
This game is interesting... but the sheer number of steps the mundane has feels a bit excessive like it was done to pad out the game so people on Steam couldn't refund it. Especially since it reveals the parasite thing and twist far too quickly. It needed more time in the oven to work on pacing and such. Edit: I'm aware you unlock new animals and NG+ but many people will have seen the credits and assume that is it. Then you have to replay segments over and over. This is generally not a good thing for a game with super mundane tasks and an initial run about 2 hours in length.
I got an hour into the video, and even at that point I was like "Is this it? We haven't really seen anything too interesting." I couldn't imagine doing multiple playthroughs of this same thing.
you know i kinda liked the idea of having a rather lengthy list of things to do in theory. issue is for me that it didnt turn into any kind of real game mechanic in the end. you are safe in pretty much every spot execpt for special times that loudly scream "you are currently in danger" so you never need to be worried about anything so it genuinley is just tidious instead of "handle diffcult tasks under stress"
It's a fun concept, we've seen plenty of fun job simulator horror games, and mutant animals obviously bring some potential. It's unfortunate to have this many bugs at launch though, especially one that effectively makes it impossible to do any of the unlockable animals. Hopefully that patch comes soon.
if the main character can cure the animals of the parasite (as in, make the animals puke it up and become normal again) why wouldn't he just attempt to lower the dose and tranq himself? worst case he dies but best case he lives, either way his family are still eating human meat with all sorts of additives for the animals in it anyways :/ also i don't get why the doctor guy kept calling the facility other than for exposition, i could see the writers getting away with it if he asked about the guys symptoms and stuff but its so obvious they didnt think of it. this game looked really cool when i saw the trailer but this all feels so wonky.

So they can implement some of the most complex easter eggs they could relate to the game but can't make an actually scary horror game. Chore simulator + running a bit AFTER mutants instead of from is... something else.
Maybe there'd be some way to increase expression? Like some "fake promoters" if that's possible, or the parasite just so happens to come with MRNA that reads those regardless of expression

Cool game premise? I dunno, it feels super underwhelming to me, there’s barely any difference between treating the animals. The monster designs are great, but the writing and gameplay seem super subpar. Honestly, it reminds me of a badly made flash game with really good graphics.
The screenwriter and "founder?" Of zoochosis died during development and this game was in development for some years so of course its gonna be undercooked on a writing standpoint

Essentially being allowed to handle feces, meat, and parasites within 10 minutes of food with no sanitization or cleaning and then FEEDING his family the meat? I understand the position to a certain degree. Not only that, but the meat being literal animal food, for a shady zoo company who is intentionally keeping you in the dark in which you are also risking your only chance of actually supporting your family because of theft of company property? Horrible decision making, even for a fictional character.
Been very hyped for this game, trailer was really nice, and I tried to avoid watching any playthoughs until i played it myself, but at this point, after seeing the reviews about how buggy the game is, I can only guess that the game got released too soon. Im gonna skip playing it for now
The trailer is basically what made me decide not to get the game. A quick comparison shows the trailer is all just pre rendered bullshot footage which is absolutely scummy in my opinion.

Penguins are apparently one of the worst animals to look after in a zoo. Their pecks and bites are strong and they poop everywhere, making the whole enclosure slippery and smelly.
Our main protagonist is… Not dumb per se, but perhaps more accurately… Brash? Or a bit naive. And although I see some potential in this story, I can get why many here are disappointed. I can’t help but agree that while this game is okay, it feels like it could’ve been better.
The MC is definetly dumb: steals mystery meat on his first day on the job, gives it to his family, then admits to it. There is not a critical thought in the man's head.
No, ‘dumb’ is a good word for him. One of his first meaningful actions is stealing what looks like about 10 kilos of raw meat intended for animal consumption because he doesn’t like how much pre-packages food his daughter has been eating.

Yeah, I volunteered at a zoo for several years, and everything about the setup here just felt off in a way that was distracting. Like, yes, it's a video game and realism was no one's first concern, but putting you in the first-person perspective of The One Untrained Night Guy doing all of these tasks in tedious detail makes it harder to shrug the feeling of "that's not how any of this works" off than in something like Planet Zoo.

It's okay, the world stops existing when the protagonist dies so the writers of the game don't have to think that far ahead. If the players ask they can just make up magic powers that makes them super duper immune to everything.

I feel like the unsettling feeling could have been ramped up a bit more. Like the Doc could have already had a bunch of meat already prepared for you and you have your stockpile ready to go. You can choose to give the meat to your family (or maybe the fish or maybe none at all, it does seem weird to steal on day 1 of the job with a CAMERA strapped to your chest). Then after a few more shifts or days where you've given your family food THAT is when you run out of the meat brick stockpile. Doc tells you it's time to learn how to make more meat bricks on your own which shows us the big reveal of where the meat comes from and the fact you've been feeding it to your wife and child.
I’m not sure if that’s more a product of being from a studio based in the former Soviet Union, with all the spotty English and lower salaries that entails. AI could also have a hand in the writing.

Too many horror game protagonists are just kind of.. I dunno, dumb? I know it's for story purposes and immersion, but ironically, this takes the immersion _away_ from people. Like, come on. You were locked up the whole night with an boss that knows far too much about you, is rude, has injected you with weird stuff and made you sign an NDA. Later you also found out you are working with actual mutant monsters and that you are feeding the animals other people.. Worse yet, you have given this to your wife and kid. Desperate times call for desperate measures but this is too much man. Even for the already highly suspicious pay as well, in addition to everything else. The moment that guy injected him with stuff for transporting our protag to the workplace is the moment I'm leaving and screw whatever paper I have signed.

@@sharkiebites5601 Given some of the... stilted (?) dialogue, i wonder if the game wasn't written by native english speakers and maybe their original language has two different words for "stereotypical [mad] scientists in a lab working with chemicals for experiments" vs. "zoologist/biologist/conservationist that studies and/or helps animals", and then translated the first word into just "scientists" without knowing that the term also refers to the latter group of researchers in English.
Pfft this was also my first thought as someone studying biology rn to hopefully become a vet technologist. My goal is to work in wildlife rehabilitation or help treat exotic animals in zoos. The idea that zoos have no scientists on staff unintentionally made me laugh because I sure as hell am working for this science degree for a reason 😂

Not even five minutes in and I'm already glad you took the bullet for me on this one. I see from the comments that the original writer may have died before this was finished and well... ten minutes in and I'm already mentally checked out and debating against even finishing this video. I liked the original idea, I still do, but I'm sorry this sucks. Either the original writer didn't get very far before he died or he was not as good as he was made out to be...
- If you're going to make a "devil's contract", do not write it like the game did here. No one writes a contract like that because no one in their right mind would sign it. Not only that but the whole exchange and the tutorial that follows just leads to further questions and not in a good way.
- $100,000 USD a year turns out to be a little over $50 USD an hour before taxes, which sadly one of the few things about "blue collar horror" this game got right. In most places, that's actually insanely good money for a job that apparently requires very little post-secondary education of any kind if Paul could get past the interview with just six months of chemical engineering courses and seemingly no formal training in more relevant zoological trades. But unfortunately it just adds further questions.
- In the better games Manly has played, you're asking questions because you want to know more and see what happens next. Here we're asking questions because nothing makes any logical sense either internally or externally. How did Paul even know about this job posting in the first place? If the pay's that good then why isn't he fighting dozens of other hopefuls? Why is he surprised that Doc knows about his college education? Did he not submit a resume or omit that from the resume? If he didn't then how did Paul even get here?
- I could go on but ultimately this feels like the middle or last two-thirds of a movie, a particularly BAD movie.
Which is a pity because I like the mechanics and I like the core idea. They need to be tightened a bit but I feel we have some potential here. Or at least had.
Yeah, like seeing that "in memory of" for the writer in the credits just made me think "well, that could explain some things, I would not be surprised if they just got someone who knew nothing about telling a story to fill in any blanks".

I'd also like to point out that it's 100k per year in 1991 (according to the TIS). Now obviously speaking, 100k per year is great no matter what, but 100k per year could put you firmly in a lower end upper class lifestyle back then. The fact that Paul was seemingly the only guy there to take such an easy job with such a high pay is just confusing no matter how it's written.

This game isn't just broken but the monsters just don't feel threatening whatsoever. They appear, scream, then run in circles in the habitats while the player awkwardly walks around trying to collect blood samples for the munition to put down the monster. Every few minutes minutes it'll maybe grab an animal for a moment or push over the player, but they're so poorly designed from a gameplay perspective that their designs feel wasted. Not to mention the trashy writing being a general immersion killer
Yeah ngl I was expecting the animals to be a lot more threatening. I was expecting them to have different tactics on how to take them down, like have us be more stealthy for the gorilla's or use bait for the penguins
This, whole thing feels like the classic 'great premise, horrible execution and direction'.
The infected don't have a interesting opening either like they just scream and run away and do their little animation. I felt the most tense at the start when collecting samples because what if the animals transform before I am prepared? They should have leaned into that more and have the animals exhibit weird behavior like in the trailer.

The writing is trashy because the original writer died before being able to complete the game, and other members of the team had to step in to try to fill the gaps. Thats why its choppy and exposition heavy, its hard to fill in someone elses creative writing when theyre no longer a source. The shoddy execution has no excuses however, the game needs way more time in the oven
The most fictitious part of this entire game is a struggling father risking his new job by stealing mystery zoo meat to feed his kids. "What do you mean the girls got worse? That meat had SO much tranqulizer in it"
It's especially stupid when you remember that he was told that he was being outfitted with a camera so the company scientist can review his work.

This is one of the big problems I (and it seems many others) have with this story. The guy says that his family is eating pre-packaged meals and the main reason he steals the meat is for his family to eat something "good" for once. The guy is supposed to be at least somewhat educated, he's 6 months of work/education with chemicals in the past according to the story and he just thinks it's fine to take what is could easily be assumed to be the unwanted byproducts of slaughter houses and who knows what else mixed in for his family. We find out that it's people, but even prior to that it's a terrible idea.
Also, I get that it's so this plot point can happen(and is likely intended to imply he's got a plan and wants her to try to talk to him) but it makes the MC look and sound like an asshole when he says "let my wife stick around, she'll figure out she needs to go home eventually."

If there is ever a apocalypse steal animal food sounds disgusting but it is much better with proteins, nutrients, durability and quality overall, dog food is a good example it smells bad and probably taste very bad but this is high quality food which will give everything your body needs and will fill you up.

Ngl that game was a huge disappointment. Shame the screenwriter died, I think he was onto something great there.
1. They animated the transformation of the giraffe in the trailer. They got rid of ALL transformation animations. That is a horrendous letdown.
2. The MC is a dumbass. For someone who seems to have experience with chemicals, feeding his own family a slab of meat prepared for animals is the biggest dumbassery I could ever imagine.
3. The transformed animals are absolutely soulless and not in the slightest bit threatening. They just rund around like wild chickens and if they happen to catch you oh well you're stunned for a sec.
4. Multiple runs would have been acceptable if it was something like a roguelike. You need to be able to cure every animal without getting hit at all to finish the game. And everytime you restart the order of the animals is random.
5. The meat mechanic was absolutely useless if you have tranquilizers. Unless that is relevant for the story how much crime you'll end up doing, that is a letdown.
6. And those grizzly static animations to skip actually animating is just a whole lot of a yikes.

I don't think there was ever a transformation animation in-game. The trailer presented an overly ambitious version of the game, clearly animated by a separate team, most probably using modified versions of the models that would simply be impossible to animate by the dev team. It feels like more money went into the marketing than the game itself. I knew from the first gameplay reveal that it wasn't going to be very good

Losing their writer was like a major blow, on top of just losing their freind. I really hope they take the feedback and make badly needed changes. So much potential. But losing a team mate to death may have been enough to end it. Understandably, as mourning is no joke. But they need to be honest about it and lower the price to meet the game where it ended up. I just feel so bad for the team losing their freind.
@@kurokagator4567 I rewatched all trailers - the scene you're talking about doesn't actually show any animated transformation - it just cleverly jumpcuts to giraffe transformed. I can see how people remember watching it transform, but it actually never happened.
There is one in game trailer, that has an actual caption, that it's an in game recording, and it's just as borin as the finished product. All the other trailers were actually cinematic trailers, completely misleading.

Given the meat doesn't make sense, let alone stealing it on your first day. If he's desperate and willing to ignore those signs it should be expressed better. There's a world of difference between what I'd be willing to do to feed my starving family, and what I'd be willing to do to feed my on a poor diet.
I can tell something is wrong with this place considering the fact that at 19:09 on the left hand side there are pallets stacked sideways, that is an osha violation and pallets are supposed to be stacked flat, many places still do this wrong but they arent supposed to.
I think the door leading directly into the pen full of nothing but male gorillas that you're told to just casually stroll through may also be an OSHA violation.

I always appreciate how methodically Manly is with the games he plays. He handled the pressure of curing the infected animals before they could kill any of their enclosure buddies pretty well.
Yeah no offense to some other RUclipsrs but Manly is the only one who isn't infuriating to watch when playing horro games and its why I stay subscribed to him.
I don’t necessarily like that they put a body cam on the player then drug him… specifically how it’s portrayed visually. Camera glitches would’ve been great to mask the transition, but instead we get the classic fade in and out of consciousness… but we’ve *just* been told it’s a camera.
Yeah, this game really doesn't take advantage of the fact that it's on a body cam. Like what was the point if you're gonna treat it like a first person view anyway?
It really feels like the bodycam is just a cheap excuse to have static cover the mutated animals transforming back. And that would be fine, if the game was actually consistent about everything we see being from the perspective of the camera.

I was hoping to see that exploited in some way in this and JackSepticEye’s playthrough, like instead of one of the mutations being revealed around a corner, one of them turns a corner to chase _you_ as you’re pulling your cart. You can either try to lug your cart with you into the nearest door, or immediately sprint away to hide or get your gadgets later.
Its weird because that is a very cool detail that helps make the initial tension of the game start strong.
But its never actually used in a form that matters where you hear a mutation behind you.

The monster design is really cool, hope it gets fixed. Also it's always a special kind of sad when a person that participates in a project like that dies before it's finished. Not only is it hard enough to deal with the grief and the knowledge that that person might never see what they had their hand in complete, but the pressure to finish the project anyways might make it even harder to put out something polished. I wish it was more accepted that your work doesn't need to be put out so fast that you need to not care for yourself first...

This is already a sketchy af team anyway, look at sparky marky or whatever dumbA name their first game was. That was sooo awful! I had flash backs when manly pointed them out on the fridge, it was like "Oh god SO this is the game people were talking about?" People were saying they were hoping the team would create a story/game they actually cared about instead of trying to make it like an nft project or whatever sparky mark was supposed to be. It was very obvious there was NO love put into that game. So to see this ... ugh.. it was interesting, but more in the sense of a working sim than a horror game, hopefully that makes sense. It lacks a bit of polish, like it just needed a bit more time to work on animations.

Theres also the fact that zoo and animal conservationist jobs just don't pay well. These aren't the kind of jobs you take for the money-

The thing that irritates me most about this type of game is when they don’t have options to do the morally right thing, let alone any of the crazy stuff real humans might do. You can’t even try to use the phones to call the cops, you can’t slug the ‘doctor’ when he grabs your arm (which is what I’d do to anyone who suddenly grabbed me), you can’t inject yourself with the parasite cure, you can’t try to make your own way out… Bruh.

Major critique on the writing I’m 20 minutes in, the main character is absurd. Like I guess the reason he didn’t have the other guy tell the wife to leave was so that our main character could sneak her the meat. But like animal feed is very often dosed with antibiotics or extra nutrients or whatnot that is not fit for human consumption, it dosnt make sense why someone would willingly feed that to their sick child especially someone who seemed well educated. Like??? I know it’s for plot reasons so the family could get sick or mutated but it feels like such a stupid thing to do and our MC has thus been rather level headed if not desperate. Like either there needs to be more set up for the min character’s desperation for food (maybe emphasis on the kids condition or a side remark from our tutorial guide that ‘you look really thin’) anything. That or like have our Mc be more of an idiot, show more evidence he is so deeply unqualified for this position that hiring him is a sighn of a currupt company. My point still stands that if you are in a zoo and you see a prepackaged slab of meat you shouldn’t feed it to your wife and kids and most sane people would at least check what’s in it first. If the writers of this game was willing to write our mc getting grossed out that he has to look at fecal samples (something he should have realized when sighing up for a job relating to animals) then I think it’s pretty in character for him to be wary about mystery meat slabs. Like he has a sick child he supposedly cares for. I’m not saying the plot point itself needs to be removed there are ways to set it up better (like I wrote above having the tutorial character mention the meats quality or having it better emphasized that our mc is desperate for food.) like for me this was just the final push that broke my immersion. Like you telling me there’s this guy who called a suicide hotline who is desperate for money who sighns for a shady job interview at night and if he even reads the contract will get murdered , and he’s so desperate for money he can’t even feed his dying child proper food so he turns to trying to feed his family mystery meat, the same guy who’s that desperate has complaints about animal poop… I dunno it’s just one to many plot contrivances and horror game tropes for me to get into the story

I don't think that dialogue is really bad, it's decent for the indi horror game, but one thing that feels really strange is that doc voice actor barely makes pauses between sentences. It's like there is no periods at all. Paul actor don't have such problem

Tim Stephenson is the dude voicing Doc, and he’s got a website and a small youtube channel under his name. He sounds exactly like he does in the beginning of the game.
The weird lack of pauses sound more like poorly edited dialogue, with everyone’s stiff delivery being something I’d sooner put fault into whoever was directing the VAs. I wouldn’t doubt it if Clapperhead used AI Voices - again - but I’m on the fence on if they did or not. I can only say in confidence that Tim Stephenson is a real human.

Another "work simulator" horror game ... I really thought it would be another kind of game. The trailers were soo cool.
The whole concept is great, but the game itself not so much ... maybe if the encounters were more like puzzles (a different one for each animal) or if the gameplay actually revolved around finding the infected ones and the kind of parasite that is infecting them (using clues, examination tools, and actions that made them weird) (kinda like Phasmophobia), it would be better ... but that's just me ... I don't really like this genre. Is good in short dosis (like in some 20 minutes long horror videogames), but over an hour of this is too much
i think having it be more of a puzzle would be great! maybe you do your exams, then you have to decide if it's an actual infection or the parasite. if you're right, nothing bad happens. if you're wrong, it mutates and kills the other animals/you.
Playing as a vet having to get close to the animals and actually diagnose them would have been FAR more interesting. Or even like what I thought the trailers implied, we would have to find the mutants who were hiding from us. The gameplay of this game just seems boring in general, and doesn't do much to help the opinion of work horror.

This game is interesting... but the sheer number of steps the mundane has feels a bit excessive like it was done to pad out the game so people on Steam couldn't refund it. Especially since it reveals the parasite thing and twist far too quickly.
It needed more time in the oven to work on pacing and such.
Edit: I'm aware you unlock new animals and NG+ but many people will have seen the credits and assume that is it. Then you have to replay segments over and over. This is generally not a good thing for a game with super mundane tasks and an initial run about 2 hours in length.
I got an hour into the video, and even at that point I was like "Is this it? We haven't really seen anything too interesting." I couldn't imagine doing multiple playthroughs of this same thing.
you know i kinda liked the idea of having a rather lengthy list of things to do in theory. issue is for me that it didnt turn into any kind of real game mechanic in the end.
you are safe in pretty much every spot execpt for special times that loudly scream "you are currently in danger" so you never need to be worried about anything so it genuinley is just tidious instead of "handle diffcult tasks under stress"

It's a fun concept, we've seen plenty of fun job simulator horror games, and mutant animals obviously bring some potential. It's unfortunate to have this many bugs at launch though, especially one that effectively makes it impossible to do any of the unlockable animals. Hopefully that patch comes soon.
if the main character can cure the animals of the parasite (as in, make the animals puke it up and become normal again) why wouldn't he just attempt to lower the dose and tranq himself? worst case he dies but best case he lives, either way his family are still eating human meat with all sorts of additives for the animals in it anyways :/
also i don't get why the doctor guy kept calling the facility other than for exposition, i could see the writers getting away with it if he asked about the guys symptoms and stuff but its so obvious they didnt think of it. this game looked really cool when i saw the trailer but this all feels so wonky.

The animals can get a little quirky at night
Been very hyped for this game, trailer was really nice, and I tried to avoid watching any playthoughs until i played it myself, but at this point, after seeing the reviews about how buggy the game is, I can only guess that the game got released too soon. Im gonna skip playing it for now
The trailer is basically what made me decide not to get the game. A quick comparison shows the trailer is all just pre rendered bullshot footage which is absolutely scummy in my opinion.

Yeah, I volunteered at a zoo for several years, and everything about the setup here just felt off in a way that was distracting. Like, yes, it's a video game and realism was no one's first concern, but putting you in the first-person perspective of The One Untrained Night Guy doing all of these tasks in tedious detail makes it harder to shrug the feeling of "that's not how any of this works" off than in something like Planet Zoo.

I feel like the unsettling feeling could have been ramped up a bit more. Like the Doc could have already had a bunch of meat already prepared for you and you have your stockpile ready to go. You can choose to give the meat to your family (or maybe the fish or maybe none at all, it does seem weird to steal on day 1 of the job with a CAMERA strapped to your chest).
Then after a few more shifts or days where you've given your family food THAT is when you run out of the meat brick stockpile. Doc tells you it's time to learn how to make more meat bricks on your own which shows us the big reveal of where the meat comes from and the fact you've been feeding it to your wife and child.
