Riding Dirt Merchant With A Flat Tire! // Whistler Part 2 of 4

- How bad of an idea is riding Whistler's Dirt Merchant trail with a Flat Tire? I got a puncture on my way down the mountain; I could either take the boring lift safely or push my luck and send one of whistlers biggest jump trails with a Flat tire in the name of science. Dirt Merchant is one of the biggest Pro line Jump trails at Whistler bike Park (besides for Crabapple).

Dirt merchant is a pro line not double black
The top is a double Black, the bottom split off is a Proline. 🙂
Hey Buddy, I'm calling out your trick in the first video of this series, on the crazy ass rock roll of RdS. The crash part is from another flowy trail.L.OL.
You sent that pro line roll like nothing. That depth looks impressive in person but no idea it was about 6 feet. I'm 5'4" myself so I understand why the compression is that intense, so much so that cost me my left collarbone. Frame by frame I was able to see where you lifted the front wheel to minimize the compression. Well done Man. Not that I'd want to give it another :-D
However, You're an inspiration to improve one's riding. Cheers.
@@Error-hc7mp But if you use the right air, its just as light as air.
Skills With Phil what type of bike do you have
Some people still give props for irresponsible decisions like that. I’d say in a Skills with Phil comment section we’re in good company. Great work! 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏
sethhhh
This is a perfect time I live in largo in Florida and you used to live in Miami I believe. I frequently ride at santos and Alafia are there any other good places to mountain bike near me.
Markham
@@masonrose-hamby2798 Markham, GFT, Carter Rd, Croom, Dr. Brown, Jonathan Dickenson,
Lakeland FL thanks I’ll make sure to try them out
Ben: Have you done it before?
Phil: No, but I’m not worried about it.
Big flex
I was going to quote the same lines! LMAO! 🤣🍻
Big Dick Energy hahahah. He made it look so easy, Shale Master has a decent compression and he just rode it so chill on a trail bike. Phil is really effing good.
13:10 scariest part of the whole video
Fr I'd be scared shitless hey btw good vids seth
Ohhhhh because of fire road bombs
I accidentally bombed that same road when I was there lmao
100% by the way love your videos. I can tell you take a lot of time and effort in editing
Berm Peak love your vids seth
You and Seth are the reasons I got into mountain biking I can’t thank you enough I’ve had so much fun this past year getting better and watching your and Seth’s videos.
Man I never get tired of hearing this. It's exciting being able to help share such a cool hobby :)
I totally agree.
I feel I should mention to both Phil and Seth I have a secret trail that needs naming. It's also ride in/out on Whistler . Maybe a future video?
Mason Rose-Hamby love jeffy
Mason Rose-Hamby X2
Omg I’ve never gotten this many likes or for the person who made the video to comment on or like my comment
Haha our “Airdrop” footage transfer was the best, so stoked that worked out!! Also, this video makes me miss Whistler so much!!!
Yes agree
Part 3 is gonna be something like "Riding down a Cliffside with only my front wheel"
Nah, just brakeless... hmmm 🤔
@@SkillsWithPhil I'd love to see someone succeed at that tbh :)
2:04
SHHHHHH DONT GIVE HIM IDEAS
@@da3driccax327 I meant like a full blown cliff
Gets a flat tire...
"Oh no that sucks"
"Well at least you didn't die"
Lmao my thinking everytime😂
That cracked me up when I was editing it.
Dirt Merchant with a flat tire? Looks like I need to order some Nobl wheels.
Cush Core played a big part.
They would be toast without Cushcore.
Phil, thank you. I am 58 yrs old. I know there was mountain biking back in the 1970's, but I did not know it existed. We had no internet to advertise that sort of stuff. I am a retired veteran with too many issues to do this sort of stuff now. This is where the thanks comes in. I am living vicariously through your video's...and some others...but you are my favorite! I know your channel is geared to your generation, but this boomer loves watch the rides. Thank you kind sir...Thank you!
I'm amazed how many people who don't mountain bike end up watching these videos. I also really enjoy reading comments like this, and thank you for taking the time to write it.
Having a lot of air time is technically the best way to preserve your rim 🤣
If Phil can find an alternate route, consider it an official trail
Part 3 would be like "Phil, you don't have tires"
Phil: "I'm not worried about it." :D
Phil with Skills!!!
More like no rims... *Skids down mountain on frame* 😂
This was one of my fav Whistler vlogs period.. such an incredible place and you fellas really ran the paces!
I like your riding technique Phil. Go over it instead of ploughing through it. That's how I see it in my minds eye and how I used to do it as well. I am from Asheville NC and just getting back on a bike after 18 years. Will be good to get my skills back.
Love the natural sound of the bike riding. As a beginner, it teaches me a lot.
Phil I could watch you ride all day every day and never get tired of it!
Motivation to go ride right now. Whistler Creekside lift opened 20 minutes ago. And therefore I must go!
And it was GREAT
Sickiest MTB video ever made. Unlimited Skills w/ Phil, new and improved
How ridiculously enjoyable is this to watch. You make it look so easy.
Can’t wait for the Wyn video, that guy rules!!!
My morning just got better! Now I'm going to ride after work. Great job Phil!
17:13 that face palm moment was a crack up!! 😂😂😂 Great riding all round btw!!
Seeing you ride the Creekside flow trails gives me a new appreciation for them. When I road them, my thoughts were "there is nothing but berms here!"
They are building a new SUPER BERM trail off south park in Creekside right now. It looks amazing so far. Will try and take some photos in next few days
No matter who you think you are, Phil’s lines will always be sketchier which makes him so unique
I got into mountain biking because of u and Seth lol
Stoked to hear that man! We're glad to see you riding!
Thanks
Same man and I just got to ride whistler and a year ago I didn’t even know mob was a thing really
1.) this is my favorite POV footage of whistler I have ever seen. It got me so stoked to want to go and ride!!!
2.) what shoes were you using during all this? My five ten impacts recently wore out and I’ve been in debate about what shoe to get next?🤔
I love your style of riding! I used to ride like that when I was a teenager. Haven’t been in the game for like 15+ years just getting back into it hope to get that style of riding back.
The follow footage at the end was really great to see. Because of the GoPro effect, the in flight footage is cool but doesn't make the viewer feel the air. But man, the lack of sound in the air brought me right back to ski jumping. There were a couple of jumps that made me catch my breath because of how long you were off the ground. Excellent video!
Dude that flat tire made the craziest sound going down those trails! It sounded almost like a 5"fat tire
Manual to front tire tap to Manual!! Freaking awesome!!!!
Goooood Loooooorrrrrd!! That was insane! I'm guessing that rock roll/drop/death wish feature at the end of "ride don't slide" is one of those that 99% of the riders roll up to, and go around without even giving it a second thought. That's not one of those where you try it, and it goes wrong, and you go OTB....tuck and roll, and usually jump up from. That's one of those where you crash and get hauled off. That looked RIDICULOUS even on camera, so I know in person it has to literally look unriedeable. I loved how you were cruising along, gapping stuff, and laughing. So much fun to watch. Your editing lately has been DEAD ON, and I can't wait for the third installment!
Nothing like waking up to a Skills with Phil notification. Always a good start to the day!
Best kind of alarm clock!
Braking bumps in the park? Phil wouldn't know, he gapped literally everything there! Great video Phil!
The jump lines always look ok but the natural style tech riding is what makes me want to get on the plane. Those woods look great :)
This reminds me of the scene in "Finding Nemo" where the sea turtle says to the clownfish "you have some serious thrill issues" or something along those lines, lol. How "squirmy" did the flat rear tire feel on those high-G berms?
Haha, that gave me a good chuckle :P
Phil. Is it me you mute the volume at 26:35? I can't hear anything or you purposely mute it?
Ugh shit 🙈!!!! I had the good audio track overlaid, but somewhere in the mix i must have deleted it or muted it accidentally leaving only the scratch audio track. It's hard to catch all these little errors with long videos. 🤷🏼♂️
@@SkillsWithPhil Oh man! Share it in instagram story and i go and listen to it. No worries! AWESOME VIDEO and your riding skills blew my mind all over again!
I can here it
It’s just really quiet

Can u be that friendly to write the subtitles? :D
Well this was the best 34 minutes I think I’ve ever spent on RUclips. Sick video dude. Such excellent footage of an amazing ride. Can’t wait to get back on my bike soon 🤘
Wow. Creekside looks freaking otherworldly here.
This is incredible. Your lines are something else. It’s what’s its all about, having as much fun as you can on the trail. Popping off and sending everything. 🤯🤘😄. Nice vids Phil. Quality stuff keep it up.
Thank you for sharing. I want your tires. That was cool that you could complete the run on a flat.
Man, the GoPro effect is strong with this one. So many of those trails look easy enough even for me, then you switch to third-person view and NOPE! 6-foot drops to flat, insane gnar, trees and root waiting to kill you. Whistler's on my bucket list, but not these particular trails.
26:34 - I agree with everything you said here. I just wish I could have heard it. Volume's way too low. I had to turn my volume all the way up, and even then it was difficult. And I'm wearing earphones, too! And then it jumps back to the normal video and POW! Eardrums blasted out!
I also loved seeing the POV from the women near the end. I don't know why that was so cool, but it was.
Stay upright and keep the rubber side down.
-Brian
You take extreme lines no one else even sees! Amazing riding!
Crazy Skills Phil! its sooo cool to watch the pro's after seeing thousands of every day riders! You Attack the trail, don't just go along for the ride!! Awesome vid! U da man!
I use to watch your videos time to time. Well that dirt merchant flat run made me subscribe definitely. Absolutely love this wheel and tire smashing
This place looks insane. Wish I grew up in a place like that :)
Phil there’s so many alternate lines me thinking I don’t think those are supposed to be lines but he makes it happen
Hey Phil, the voiceover at 26:36 after you took the hard hit seems to have gone missing. Awesome video still!
it's not missing, just turn the volume up. Lol.
The sound Phil makes hitting a beaten double is the sound I make getting off the couch to go get snacks
I can see phill is experimenting with new editing techniques. That case cut at 6:42 is a masterclass in filmography
That longest skid contest you were talking about at 33:16 happened at Woodward east week 7 last summer. It was pretty much an impromptu skid battle. It was fun, people went all the way down the hill by the cabins brakes fully locked out. If you haven't been to Woodward, go. It's a sick place.
I was a camper at Camp woodward (east) in 2003-04. We also did a skid contest on the hill where the cage. I think there's a snake run there now, but it used to be all grass.
Skills With Phil,
We did it on like the road area next to the cabins around the back of that! Thats so cool!
love the dolphin laugh when you crash! 👍
That 'Too Tight' trail looked sick
25:15 Go Pro Effect extreme edition ! wth how smooth that looked compared how wild it really is
Your bike control is on another level. Wow!
Phil you synchronize your soundtrack to the riding audio so well. Loving your inspiration! 🤙🤙
Absolutely noone
Phil: extreme laughter while falling 😂
I would be laying down waiting for paramedics. Phil's laughing out loud and going back on his bike to gap everything again. 😂
Out of this world riding Phil. Daaaaaaaaamn !!!
one thing I find interesting about phil going down trails is that he barely ever stays on the actual traIl: he will go up the sid of the track of completely go through bushes to find the fastest line.
ho-lee-crap, man! That was some serious speed thru those sections...you were passing Ludacris and headed towards Plaid! How you pulled those last second turns and not become one with several different trees...wow.
Totally sick! You guys were shredding it. Great video 😀
That's one hell of an ad for NOBL right there. You are an absolute savage dude
NOBL Wheels: Sees this video
*craps their pants*
You and your higher skilled friends have a way of smoothing out the trail! All of it! We say "Oh shit" you say "oh ya!"
Yes I love whistler vids!
me 2
Phil you are an absolute beast! So much good stuff there - could have been half a dozen separate videos and still would have been epic.
Porter: This is a real crazy tech trail.
PHil: NO! It's now a jump trail. Somebody hold my brakes!
I am just getting back into riding but man watching you ride gets my heart rate up. That stuff is way to extreme for me to probably ever attempt but cool to watch.
Another chapter in the Legend of Phil. (And footage that should end up in a Cush Core ad.)
Super entertaining! You killed it with a flat bud.
Wow, some of those sections look super technical. Nice filming.
I love your videos Phil! I really want to visit whistler some day and maybe meet you there.
Keep it up!
Living the dream, love to build for it.. I live a 3.4 from Kanuga bike park living the stoke keep it real don't stop the stoke or the shreddy!!!! Hi, five!!
Had no idea Noga was so good at jumping!! Hitting no handers and t-bogs on Dirt Merch!!! Sick to see, this is such a good Whistler vid dude.
Dude, love your channel, love your personality! Your riding “skills” are insane!
I’m shocked that you’d ride down dirt merch with a flat, even if you have cushcore. I have no clue how you kept any speed to clear the jumps, or how tire didn’t just roll over and kill you. You send the park harder than anyone I’ve ever seen lol
Awesome video Phil! But please tell me you at least had a cushcore in
Mountainbike entertainment at a different level.
@skillswithphil While you’re up at Whistler if you got an extra day consider checking out Galbraith Mountain in Bellingham WA. Super fun community sustained trail system. Definitely worth anyone’s time for some awesome free park time
I thought the one guy had rubber rain boots on but it was just the way his socks looked with his shoes haha
It's like you're writing the laws of physics as you're going along
This was brilliant dude and the last part was edited really well, it flowed
Really nice bro..... you're always so nice and friendly to people on the trail. And really excellent Rider....best of wishes bro 💯
Phil you just simply nail it, such a good ride. I'm glad to see you are back after a few months of not content :)
Sometime you should make a sessioning with Jordan Boostmaster
Dig your style bud, sick bike colors...I ride a specialized rockhopper....nothing fancy but all the spank upgrades has a very similar color....sick ride man
The air time you get on the hip jump is insane!!!
Jordan Boostmaster has officially been dethroned as of the moment this video was uploaded! Phil, you're a freaking boost god!
I have so much admiration and respect for your incredible bike control and wicked braaping skills too btw...
Such a sick video!!!
He has an older race/ qualifying video that proved that to me... sry i forget which one lol
The last part of Ride Don't Slide is waaaaay more intimidating in person than it looks in this video.
That kid in the black helmet is now my idol.
Awesome edit! Thanks for sharing your experience, Phil.
That too tight trail looked epic through the gopro
Phil is crazy with mad Skills.
that queue (and the size of those jumps) is exactly what is keeping me from going to whistler :D
It's just in crankworx. And there are the majority of trails with no jumps if you want. I rode almost to front of line at Fitzsimmons today, and no lines at all on garbo/Creekside, just get right on.
Posting from a bar right next to the gondola, watching the sun go down... You have to take a trip. 5 weeks left
I will personally put up (1-2 at a time) any skills with Phil subscriber ride in/out on Whistler mountain for FREE.
I can’t ever get enough of these. Awesome edits as usual Phil!
This is probably the best downhill park video I've ever seen! Great job!
Phil you should enter into the EWS, you could whoop! You have the best riding style, it's insane.
Nice nac nac !
dude riding that line with a flat was crazy
You amount of fun you have while on your bike is awesome great work
That fresh trail looks incredible!
