Very nice work with this NaNa Tony. Bold choice with everything you removed to make the jin. They are much nicer to work with when they get their adult foliage.
I was looking at my bonsai on the deck, coffee in hand and i thought now what would Tony do if he had one like this so I go through your videos and your def an inspiration. Cheers mate! 🇳🇿🌲👍
Thanks Bob. I think I'll leave this one alone now for a while to allow it to grow, but it will be a fun tree to return to now that the structure is looking decent
That's looking better now, with the long branch gone. I've read that junipers need a lot of attention so they don't get too thick and shade the growth out. Just another reason for you to love it!
🤣🤣I do love junipers, just not these stinging machines! I think you're right about the shading too. This one is so dense it could easily shade sections out with its weak floppy branches.
Another great one. It would literally take me forever to do what you have done due to indecision. I should start off with something simpler like a twig with a leaf on it!! Haha! Thanks for sharing your philosophy about waiting to have a great tree in 2 years..
Hi Guy. I think with practice we get quicker, plus I edit my videos quite a lot to cut out all the parts where I am just sitting there looking at the tree trying to work out what to do
That little Juniper looks already so much better after you pruned it, now at least it has a structure on which you can build the next few years. I have the same problem with most conifers as you, whenever my skin touches one of them, I get red little dots on my skin and they even sting very strongly when just water runs over them. Luckily after around 24 hours they're gone. But some of those Junipers are really nasty to work with, it's good you had some gloves on, Tony.
Yes, that's exactly the same with me. I get those little red pin prick dots too. The latex gloves are a great soluteion, and I'm hoping that when it develops it's adult foliage I will be ok with it.
@@TonysBonsai yeah very helpfull they are, dont have a bonsai yet, just a few air layers and collected stuff in pots, il wait untill next year to try get some of them into bonsai training pots
looks good and i wear gloves because dried out young foliage just hurts! it makes sense to forgo and jin until a later date. branches can always die later.
Morning Tony I have a few of these they do make good bonsai if you don’t have an allergy I suppose, they can be difficult to wire when small as yours is. Good luck with it mate.
I think you're right Joe. Now i've sorted the basic structure out, I think after the wire is removed, this needs several years to just be allowed to grow and thicken up.
Hey Tony, have you tried wiring Jins with parallel wires and twisting them while the bark is still on? Gives a nice corkscrew effect a year later and a bonus is most of the bark comes away with the wire when you strip it.
Sounds like a very interesting technique Martin. I've never tried anything like that but is definitely sounds like the kind of experiment that I would enjoy. Cheers
I was gifted a much smaller juniper with a 2 Inch trunk and it splits off into a y shape with no verticality at all. I want to repot for development. Should I just leave it alone in a development pot for a few years before I start messing with the branches? I'm just worried that the main branches are going to grow completely "outward" instead of "upward"
I have a juniper that was y shaped. I bent the larger branch right down into a full cascade and use the other for an apex. Big terracotta tall pot from the garden centre and it looks reasonable imo. It’ll get a proper pot one day.
Thanks for sharing your love for bonsai over the years with us. As a beginner I watched many of your videos. Gone too soon😕. Rest in peace my friend….. 9:14
I read a few comments and I'm wondering if you can recommend a good hand moisturizer for me Tony😂 ... I'm developing 3 of these and i get a reaction from the needles too.. i feel the stinging skin for 24hrs espesicially if i prick the skin inside of my wrists. Its good to leave lots of growth on them so you wont need to work on it again for a year or 2...thats another possitive!!
I’m with you Tony, not a big fan. I really don’t enjoy working on trees that bite back.😊 Having said that I’ve seen some spectacular trees of that species. You’ve set yours up nicely. Thanks, keep growing
Hey, i killed nearly two of these because i did root work, wiring and pruning at the same time. another one got some root work and pruning two months ago but now gets dry ends after the wiring. i think that they are very vulnerable to stress. or should i have wait longer between some work?
I cant Believe that you copped out of making a Jin yet again in my opinion the jin would clearly have made this a great Bonsai tree .i know you have a love ...hate relationship with Junipers because they make you itch and give you a rash ..but to treat them so unfairly is an injustice.Bonsai trees have feelings also you know ... :-P
@@TonysBonsai I have a vid going up Friday I tagged you in. The important part for you is at 14:54 if you don’t feel like watching it all 😂( it’s not the big bend vid)
It is good seeing the less glamorous reality of day-to-day bonsai development. I have no doubt this will be a great tree in the future. Cheers
Yeah, It just needs a good few years now to develop and then I can come back to it and it should have some nice options.

yes, that's a good point. Perhaps I won't be so allergic to them when they have the adult foliage.

Thanks Thomas. I hope you were inspired to do some good bonsai work mate! You have loads of beautiful trees down there in NZ for inspiration too!
Cheers Tony! Once again, I admire the confidence that you exhibit going in for the big cuts. Very good work, my friend.
Thanks Steve. Sometimes we have to hold back, but this was the time to get stuck in and give this tree a decent shape for the future
Tony as always you’re an inspiration, another very interesting project to look forward to in the future.👍❤️

Hi tony ,I thought plasterers hands could stand up to anything.
It's strange. I can play with cement and plaster all day, but when it comes to junipers, my hands are very sensitive.

I would be tempted to remove one of the Y branches, and then wire the other one upwards, but it's hard to say without seeing the tree

Never do heavy work on the root and the branches at the same time, no matter what species you're working on.
