To my delightful surprise, I've averaged over 36mpg in mixed driving; 25-35mph around town; 60-75mph freeway driving in my 2017 Elantra Sport 6sp w/manual. Outstanding!
The Elantra, for the DCT transmission.
Turbo Elantra pretty quick I drove it with the six speed
I pickup my new 2019 Elantra Sport DCT this Saturday, 2/23/2019. Super excited!
how has it been?
Can't believe I'm saying it, but I'd take the Elantra over the Civic in a heartbeat.
This review is very fair and independent unlike some other reviewer review cars withe fanboy to some brand. Good job I will look forward to see other car review from this guy soon. Thanks.
Love my 2019 Elantra Sport DCT... Averaged 40 mpg on a road trip last weekend.
Not a bad figure!
Elantra is such a great car. The DCT is fantastic. The chassis is exceptional and the refinement is second to none in this class.
+MotoBoy It's a very impressive vehicle.

Elantra ...good looks, faster, don't rust like Honda, replacement parts cheaper! Best bang for the $!
I'm getting about 7.5L/100km on my Civic RS 2016 model too. On a recent drive to the Hunter Valley, I was getting about 5.3L/100km. Very good for an engine that is still yet to be worn in. Really impressed with this car.
Great results there. Glad to hear you are liking it Victor. Thanks for sharing your feedback.
everything is better in hyundai.. Civic is more than just a name..
Trump Donald if your a good driver, you can make a bad car a good one! but if you suck man! whatever car you drive, still fuck!
Trump Donald no need to buy.. u suck bigtym dude!
Trump Donald good or bad u will suck..
Edward Reyez Civic is lighter. Faster to 0-60 by 1.3 seconds. Has standard independent rear suspension in all the trims of every body style. It gets better gas milage. Better resale value.. I can keep going
+Theo Guggiana Bravi the RS wasn't available in this week, but I have mentioned that it is the direct competitor in the price section. Everything else about the VTi-LX is effectively the same as the RS.
Glad to see this comparison review. Been waiting for it since I saw the release of these two cars, and I knew from the start that they would be rivalling each other. My choice between the two would be the Elantra. Its an overall good looking car, and Hyundai having been making a good name for themselves with the Veloster and the Genesis.
You didn’t mention the rear IRS on the Elantra. Here in the USA it is only on the sport model the other models still have the rear twist beam in the back where the sport has the multi link! I have an older 2015 top of the line Limited that is my wife’s Dailey driver. It has provided almost 60K miles of trouble free miles. We have only changed the oil front break pads and main battery. Been very happy with the car and will keep it and drive it for another few years!
Hyundai all the way
The new turbo elantra wins my vote!! Thanks, mate!
+Estrading Co thanks for watching!
Chasing Cars your comparing a sport variant of an Elantra to a base model civic, apples and oranges. and it's sad how many people fall for it.
Quick Sipper not really because the price is the same so it seems reasonable to compare both, It's odd though that he had both cars and didn't actually run acceleration tests on both and instead quoted the specs. The turbo Civic easily bests the Hyundai Sport even with its more HP and torque stock. With a tune, it gets over 220 hp. The gas mileage is nothing to sniff at either, 8mpg combined is a heck of a lot any way you slice it.
Terry Chay Yeah I just saw this review. I was looking at the Hyundai last summer before I ended up buying the Honda. They didnt offer a sport model in either here. The Hyundai was last year's model though but I do admit the limited trim level was nice. I bought the Touring model Civic with the 1.5L Im pretty happy with it except for minor electronic/software problems :/
Not surprised about this 'minor electronic/software problems' since Consumer Reports pulled their recommendation of the new Honda Civic due to bad reliability issues. Honda has also taken an overall dive in reliability rankings, after their latest redesigns. And those CVT transmissions are not an enjoyable drive.
I'm buying a new car now in Australia and your channel is helping SO MUCH. Thanks!
So pleased to hear that! Good luck in your search.
One important thing to remember about the two as well is while the Elantra Sport does have a more peppy feel with the dual clutch design and does put out more power and torque, the Civic 1.5T engine models actually have a faster 0-60 time just because the gear ratios are so different. Also, top speeds are only due to where the limiters are set. Take those away and they’re surprisingly comparable. It really comes down to feel
I don’t like the red stitching, it’s cheesy and stressful to look at in my opinion. Since you look at the wheel a lot, a more neutral and relaxing colour is better to look at. I will have to go with the Civic! Keep up the good work mate...
Corolla looks pale when compared with this both.
Carlton C No it doesn't.
Blue Post it notes really?
+Carlton C turbocharge the corolla!
Except the Corolla is more reliable and has more bang for the buck.
not in canada at least..
hyundai way nicer and I perfer it hands down
Elantra!!
i like elantra's front grill 😍
Fruitarian I fell in love with mine immediately. I hope Hyundai keeps that moving forward. It's such a nice touch.
Great review Tom. We don't get the Elantra in the UK but the new Civic is to arrive shortly, so your reviews are timely. Might be an illusion but the inside background noise of each car seemed higher in the Civic compared to the Elantra. The boot opening for the Civic appeared quite small, although a hatch is to be provided in the UK.
Andrew K, Northern Ireland ive driven both and you are right! the elentra was much more quiet compared to the civic. also would like the mention the middle seat in the civic shouldnt even be counted as a seat.
Many thanks D Shin for the info :)
Elantra sport
Somebody may not like the design of new Civic sedan ,but in terms of quality and petrol engine technology, Honda is best of the best. Hyundai has improved its quality but in many aspects it is uncomparable with iconic Honda cars.
Civic looks like robust but back side is ugly and also the interior design is not cool like Elantra.....bla bla .... yeap...... I'd like to get one Elantra....
Elantra Sport much better then Civic Turbo.
Both great cars. Civic has option for a better looking gray accent interior and it's RPM gauge is pretty neat. Hyundai however has a neater sounding exhaust.
I originally looked at the Elantra Sport to replace my Civic SI (a more fair comparison for power since they are almost exactly the same, 2017's that is) but I then test drove a top of the line 1.5T automatic Civic and was surprised how fast it was. The Elantra is more sporty than the regular Civic, but its neck and neck with an SI no doubt. I did not like the factory tires on the Elantra Sport that I drove, nor the clutch. But the rest of the car was very nice, and it's very good looking too. I did like the Civic more overall for its overall feel and ride quality.
Good points! I don't know what tyres Hyundai use in the American market, but the Hankook Ventus rubber on the Australian-spec Elantra SR (Sport) are pretty good.
I’m curious if anyone actually bought the Elantra? Looking at buying one and was wondering how they square up today in 2022, and if the vehicle has been reliable at all
184 Civic users can't accept the fact that Hyundai is stepping up the game.
DCT>CVT
Sonic_1000 the civic 0-60 is 6.7 seconds compared to Elantra 8 seconds. The Civic also gets better gas milage and is lighter...
Fadic 4 But it's a Honda.
Fadic 4 that gas mileage is debatable when you have larger rims with a CVT. I should know. I have a 2014 Civic EXL with the 17 inch rims. It's 3mpg less between both highway and city compared with my 2013 Civic LX I had with 15 inch steel wheels and a Automatic transmission.
Jess Barnett the ex and above only come with large rims. So the EPA tested it with the rims that customers will buy.. and every review has said that the civic has gotten the mpg it advertised
where did u hear civic is 6.7? lol?
Crash Test of Hyundai Elantra : 5 stars........Crash Teast of CIVIC : 4 stars.....that's your call, man!
Hyundai Elntra wins!! That is what other car mags are saying.
idesigner but HYUNDAI sucks as always
Also on the Civic I like being able to see the sides of the hood. It gives it a sportier feel to it like a Lotus.
do you think later on you will get the option of the 6 speed manua for the civic there? im in America an we didn't receive the manual with the turbo at launch but now they are offering it with the manual transmission. Maybe there is hope for you down there!?
elantra for the win it looks more aggressive and more sportier and just has more potential than that civic. besides the civic has an ugly rear end. and I do own 2 older generation elantras good cars I've owned
Odd that the Elantra doesn't offer built in navi in Australia, they do here in North America.
+Barobran92 yeah that is weird! I'm going to follow up why.
Australian dollar is weaker so they cut unnecessary features to meet a price point
Barobran92 Hyundai Aus is trying to move away from Intergrated sat nav units. They have a lot of bugs and problems in all their older units in previous models. They also want to streamline and cost cut with the ability to use basic touch screen systems so part wise its available across more models - hence why they've gotten rid of CD/DVD players in these new release cars....
I’m deciding a i30 sr or the Elantra Sr what your guys thoughts ?
Which car is heavy? civic or elantra
The way he says civic triggers Siri on my phone 😂😂 it happened every time he said it.
+Santiago Rocha Siri loves the Australian accent :)
Im pretty sure the top Civic has cooled seats too. I've got the RS but I swear the VTI-LX had them. And if I get over 7L/100km then I'm usually flooring it at lights so I'm not entirely sure what you're doing with 7.5L
I hear that CVT is a problem with Honda and Acura..........
longhand335 acura doesnt use cvts. honda only uses a cvt on a few models
longhand335 cvts ARE the problems
except for the hyundai cvt because they magically sorted the issue out
longhand335 really? Heard the cvt in the Honda isn't as bad as other manufactures. But cvt are terrible in general.
I own the new turbo civic and I have to agree. The CVT of the honda has a problem with vibration and you feel it throughout the entire car. I also hate the CVT because no matter how much I punch down the throttle it just whines and whines and holds up the revs to redline and nothing is happening and you can actually count the seconds, that's how long it holds the gear. The looks of the new civic also gets old quite fast plus the rear is a bit overkill... too much going on and too many cheap plastics used. That's pretty bad for a $33k+ turbo econo sedan.
Do people even realize that the Elantra Sport is supposed to be a sport compact car? To go against GTI, Focus St, the upcoming Civic Si and Sentra Nismo. Not a good comparison at all. Been seeing Civic Touring vs Elantra Sports and it's not a good conparison.
In that case the Hyundai looses out to all those cars you listed... It already looses to the coupe accord manual v6 from 3 years ago
Compare based on PRICE. GTI is 5000 dollars more, street/real price. I picked up my Elantra Sport for 19 K out the door. BRAND NEW.
Elantra Sport is nice fun car recognized in Korea already.
This car has many fans in Korea and the Avante Cup Games are held every year.
Avante has good durability for race.
Elantra Sport is result of Hyundai Motor's aggressive investment for motor sport.
You can look forward next Veloster N.
both of them so good now, either one is very welcome. only different fun can be found. Im sure these two has more fun than altis and even than Mazda 3. ^^
이대성 Mazda 3 is winner of compared only problem is its run by ford.
Michael Lawrence the mazda 3 is boring as hell
CVT sucks big time.
Bob Goudreau I agree!
Thanks,you are a smart guy.
Bob Goudreau absolutely agree, have noticed that more manufacturers are going back to real automatics. They are finally realizing the fiasco the cvt has turned out to be, and that most customers hate them, especially those hit with 10.000 dollar repair quotes! !
Does this car have wireless charging to charge modern smartphones?
I think the price tags are way to high. For the top model. I also think people are silly. Just because they prefer one the call the other car junk. That retarted they are both good cars. The competition is good for U.S. consumers. Keeps the auto makers continuously improving the cars we drive
How did you get the steering wheel on the passenger side. Cool mod
Took a lot of effort
very good comparison, simple and best......
Elantra look so sexy.
Canadian Spec Honda Civic Sport Touring (Combine the contents of the RS with almost all of the extras of the VTi - add a few different ones) With a 6-Speed Manual. End,Of, Story. (Hyundais are good deals for the money, but not quite as refined or rugged than Hondas - Canadian climate is quite hard on cars...)
Wish we got a manual 1.5-litre turbo Civic here in Australia - but we don't!
elantra 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤
Does it look orange to you?
Why does the asian market get 170+hp for the turbo variant?
What about the ground clearance?
I have a 17 Elantra 2.0 i wish i woulda known about the turbo version. That being said i love my car it get 42.5 hwy!
Nice review, though I'm at a loss with Aussie power ratings.
Yeah sorry about that, we use kilowatts here! It translates to 170hp for the Civic and 201hp for the Elantra.
Chasing Cars BN. BB q
good review mate
Can you tell the wheel information of ELANTRA SPORT in the video? Personally I like that wheel.
They are an unnamed set of 17-inch twin-spoke alloys that are fitted as standard to the Elantra SR Turbo (Elantra Sport) in Australia.
Chasing Cars Thank you :)
Civic looks grt..but i love Elantra
the new civic And Elantra have proven to me that it's possible to try to hard on the exterior
elantra rocks!!!
I think both are equal hundia because of its design and Honda for its features
Good review very well done
Thanks very much Charlie.
an instant fix for USA fuel mileage figures would be to express them in metric terms. Telling people how many times the rubberband needs to be wound would be more useful.
Hahaha, yes, quite.
That Civic looks a lot more luxurious than the American sold model.
The price tag also looks luxury too.
I like the Elantra's interior better than the new i30
civic is pathetic .. elantra is kick ass
everyone complaining about the civics looks.. wait for the civic hatch In about 2 months... completely different back and better front. that being Said... civic for the win! and I'm getting the hatch!
We have both of these cars. It's about your preference. But Honda definately is much more "techy".
+Radha Chatterjee Interesting point. Which one of the cars do you prefer?
why does the Civic have a Vtec Turbo badge? The 1.5t doesn't have Vtec.
+David Maglioli it does actually - this has the four-cylinder variant of the Earth Dreams VTEC Turbo engine.
Chasing Cars the 1.5l turbo in the civic are not vtecs. Only the 2.0l is. Unless Australia got a new engine.
I'm just going off what Honda have told me about the engine. There's a short explanation of it here on Wiki: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VTEC#VTEC_TURBO
Chasing Cars That must just be euro spec only then. Honda has said and it states on their site in the US. that the 1.5 does not have VTEC, it does have VVT like all cars but its not specifically a VTEC system
That'd be our answer. Australia almost exclusively receives Euro spec cars, rather than the US spec.
hyundai
Crazy how his pants goes from long to short in an instant at 2:10
I’m in 3018, you’re stuck in 2018
good review..hopefully these cars spur Mazda on to bolting a turbo to their underpowered 3s. I got a laugh out of your editing. It chopped from you in jeans to shorts quite seemlessly....
+lawboy777 yeah, I hold out hope for a Mazda 3 with the new 2.5T. And yeah sorry about that - this was a two day shoot and the second day was so hot! That's an Australian summer for you.
Civic back end is but too dramatic though
bannajirocks shit>civic
What say? You eat shit?
Civic manual for me!!! :)
When will Civic come in India?
Are these Canadian prices?
Australian mate
lol corolla... RIP
Oganesson 118 its still going to outsell these 2
sir can you make the video of Volkswagen golf vs Hyundai i30
Yes, coming up very soon!
Civic is more of a coupe ryt??
Yeah, it's a coupe-style sedan, but there is a separate Civic Coupe sold in some other markets.
Chasing Cars a hatchback with 'R' symbol ryt???
***** the place where iam from ... civic isnt launched yet ..but yeah the sources say its a full fledged sedan competing with jetta, octavia, corolla ... so that's why ..i dont know what exactly civic is 😁
elantra for classy exterior and ok interior. civic sporty exterior and sporty interior
The question is which is better.
10 years back. Everyone would’ve favored Honda over Hyundai. But nowadays, seems like Hyundai is taking a slight win over.
Why can't all car reviews be like this
Honda, without doubt
Honda is the better choice. Honda has been around a whole lot longer than a Hyundai. C'mon people let's be real here!!!
Hyundai have crept up on Honda, and in many ways, overtaken them
Pov: ur here to check which car won lol
This is the first review where elantra was voted better than civic
+Shravan Pammi Must have been good not to hear the same thing endlessly repeated, then.
+Chasing Cars lol u have a positive attitude mate😂
+Shravan Pammi I try! Don't worry, I still think the Civic is a very good car.
Shravan Pammi have you watched " auto guide" comparison ?? it's the same result lol
+Chasing Cars i agree mate elantra is better than civic
Can anyone help me I just bought the elantra sport... what is is DCT?? I keep seeing that in the comments. And i see the navigation system on the screen but mine doesn't have it?? Or maybe I can't find it lol it's my first car btw
Alexis Gomez read your owners manual. IT WILL ANSWER ALL YOUR QUESTIONS.
Any car with a automatic transmission has my vote!
Jess Barnett AMEN BROTHER!
why are we comparing a civic touring to a sport Elantra?
+Quick Sipper because we don't have a Civic Si in Australia and the RS press car had been damaged the week prior to this.
Quick Sipper not a touring tho....
Eh, Civic wins for me. Wouldn't consider a car a "sports car" with a 1.5/1.6 liter FWD engine anyway. Got one for 20800 down from 24100 MSRP. EX-T, CVT with Honda sensing. Tuned it for 93 octane about 220-230HP and 240ish lbs of torque. Will walk all over any Elantra for a lot less money too and hold it's value better plus no disappearing oil!
Only the wheel rim of elantra looks nice.
Hyundai elantra , in segment of Honda civic , ..... a Premium mid sized car comparison ....
Elantra's face looks too much like a Dodge Dart. But it does look flashy an nice everywhere else. My sister has the new Civic and I enjoy it a lot. CVT is a bummer but it's a nice car. I think I'd choose the Elantra only because of the DCT. I prefer Honda's technology and interior and MOST of the exterior. Got used to the rear but it's still a bit ugly.
Theo Guggiana Bravi I completely agree!
I don't have a horse in this race because I'm not a fan of either company but I test drove both these cars looking for a economical but sporty second vehicle and I'm sorry Honda Fanboys but the elantra wins this easily
More expensive low Hp low torque and CVT What the heck is going on? Japan?
It's certainly a different approach to the Euros and even the Koreans.
Why is 182 HP low for a middle class stock sedan?
