  • I take my Work truck and modify it so that it gets better fuel economy it went from 10 mpg up to 16 mpg by removing carbon buildup in the intake manifold and removing the throttlebody plate from the butterfly valve in the intake manifold, this is going to be part one and it is especially focused towards all of the 6.7 power stroke owners that want to get better fuel economy and mileage and mpg. Although the basic principles in here should apply to every other diesel truck that’s 2008 or Newer and has an EGR and emissions system. Please make sure to like subscribe hit the notifications and comment on here then share it with any of your friends that are getting very very bad fuel economy other diesel truck..

    Retired now ,but drove semi ( diesel ) for 30 years. Every second fillup I,d use Kleen fuel additive to the tank to keep the combustion system clean , free of soot and moisture . Sold at all truck stops . Many people try to save a few bucks by not changing the fuel filter, false economy ,as well as air filter. Don,t cheap out ,change them all regularly .

Gained a few MPG on a 1995 Dakota (5.2L V8) years back cleaning it out until it went from black to shiny silver. Currently, my 2017 6.7L PSD gets 22-24mpg highway and 16-18mpg in the city. The big thing that interests me is deleting the EGR and DPF, which can nearly double the mileage. Then you get little build-up and not the mess you showed us.

    I have a bone stock 2016 F350 4x4 Lariat with just under 90k miles. In town driving I get 18 mpg unloaded. I am never on the highway without a trailer but unloaded I get 14 to 15. Depending on how heavy the load is I have gotten down to 11 mpg. Since 30k I always use Hot Shot's Secret LX4 Lubricity Extreme fuel additive. I also change the fuel filters with every T6 Rotella 10K oil change and swap out the oil filter at 5K. I get the oil analyzed at every 10k oil change and the results tell me I could go 3 to 4k miles further on the oil that I am changing. Is it overkill? Yes, but I want this truck to last. A recent change in my business model will put 3 to 4 times what I had been averaging in mileage. I pulled apart the intake at 75k and cleaned it. The intake wasn't that bad. No difference in mileage after the clean.
    An EGR and DEF delete with tune would be an option if I didn't live in an area that has emissions testing. My BIL has a 2014 F250 6.7 that he has deleted and he is getting 24 mpg unloaded but he is an insurance salesman that hauls a horse trailer a dozen times in a year.

    All that gunk is actually from your crank case vent (CCV). It is sucked in the intake right before the turbo then goes through your intercooler then up that charge pipe into the engine. If you have that much gunk then you really should pull the intercooler out and clean it really well with dawn… and all the hoses in between… then reroute the ccv (cheap and easy) and never have to clean that stuff again.

    • @MikeSVOR
      @MikeSVOR 2 года назад +3

      No. That soot is from the EGR sucking exhaust gas back into the intake from the EGR coolers. The oil from the PCV system is harmless, unless it pools up and then sucks it in all at once. The intercooler won't have that soot in it because the EGR is right at the throttle body.

    • @adamm74
      @adamm74 2 года назад +3

      @@MikeSVOR Sorry mike, you are wrong. The intake from the EGR cooler is BEHIND the throttle plate. That throttle plate actually cuts off flow from the turbo creating a vacuum so that it sucks more exhaust gases into the engine from the port BEHIND the plate.. This means that the soot from the EGR never touches that throttle plate because it is immediately sucked into the engine. The only other contaminate is the CCV. This oil is also not harmless... When oil mixes with the EGR soot then it builds a film of poop through the intake. This soot coats valve stems and piston walls, causing wear on both. Oil from the CCV can also build up in the intercooler reducing its thermal efficiency. I once emptied a quart or two out of an old 7.3 intercooler. A simple diagram of the EGR system can be seen below. Hope this helps. I did the CCV reroute at 10K miles and now im at 130K with a spotless throttle plate. Only way my 6.7 will get 16mpg is if I drop it out of an airplane. From day one with less than 30 miles on the truck it never got over 14mpg unless I was coasting downhill and keeping the speed under 60mph on the freeway. Granted a dually with 4.10 gears will get worse.

Second thank you for taking the time to make this video, I really hope my gas mileage goes up that much! I already replaced the fuel filters( I’m an idiot and didn’t put grease on the gasket for the filter housing to the pump and broke the pump ($450)😮) low pressure fuel pump and the air filter. Ok my question is @ 7:52 on your video, the past that connects to the air filter housing and has the aluminum house price going over it. What is that called and why do I have a little tank looking thing on mine? Should I take it off or leave it on. And if I take it off, where do I get the piece and what is it called to plug the hole? Once again, you’re awesome I appreciate your time, and your knowledge!

    You want to severely reduce a diesel engine's service life? Strap it with a bunch of emissions equipment. EGR, DPF, SCR cat, dosing valves, pig urea,... The valve is there because Ford felt it needed to be there to promote EGR flow by modulating the flow from the fresh air side to increase flow on the EGR side to help the engine meet the EPA requirements for the control of NOx. EGR is an emissions item and provides no performance or mileage benefit of gas or diesel engines. Does routing a hose from your posterior to your mouth benefit you in any way? Didn't think so. However there may be a traction control benefit from this valve by the system being able to shut the EGR valve, restricting the fresh air intake, and going into fuel cut. I have not read that in any system operation description so far. So it is not likely.

    Depending on your vehicles gear ratio, there’s a super sweet spot in mph to get max MPG. Like an old 2006 dodge dually mega cab with 3.73 rears and a 5.9 24v Cummins 48REtranny running at 1600 rpm’s can get 25 mpg on the interstate on flat ground whereas a 2017 F450 Platinum with a 6.7 powerstroke and 4.30 rears and a 6speed tranny only gets 14 mpg running at 45mph. Not driving fast will get you more then removing stuff and becoming illegal. While you’re at it you can save money by putting red diesel in your truck, that’ll save a bunch of money since y’all don’t care about legalities.
