I think discs will be around for a very long time (actually they've been around since 1948 when two Belgian gentlemen patented the original system, and a company developed called Atoma (still in business today, although they don't sell in the USA)). The flexibility of discs are what really appeal to many -- example: you can take a small note from a small dimensioned disc notebook and stick it in a larger dimensioned disc bound notebook. That right there cannot be done in most ring bound systems. So now we have a plethora of disc companies which more less follow the same standard 'mushroom' hole standard: Atoma, Levenger, Arc (Staples), TUL (Office Max), Martha Stewart, Talia plans, ... the list grows each year.
I’m so glad you did this video. Half letter is my size. I really love it and am always looking for inspiration. A lot of people did move away from this size and I hope it makes a comeback 😊
Aw thanks for watching!! I’m so glad that there are some who are still loving the size! I totally agree that it needs to make a comeback!!! I feel like this year was all notebooks, I think its discs turn to have the spotlight next year hahaa
I definitely love the discs for everything you mentioned and then some over rings. You still get the versatility but they are cheaper, lighter, and like you said easier to cut in half punch and done. I can't stand ring gaps and with discs I have had a few have the paint chip off but it's WAY better than a gapped ring. With rings it's harder to write on the left side of the page and in the back of the planner the paper starts to come out (at least for me if I slit the pages) and they are so ridiculously expensive imo. I'm in between a TN and a disc planner for 2023 and if I see yet another person in Hobonichi weeks I think I'll scream lol haha nothing against weeks people and I think they are a great planner but wow I see them everywhere. :)
These videos about switching from rings to discs and the other way around (or even going to travelers) is the reason why I now get covers that are multipurpose. If I so choose then I can go in between the 3 binding types. Still like this vids but I like having my choices.
Rings user... I never struggle to open my rings, never slit the holes on my pages (the horror! 😨) and, in fact, rarely open my rings at all (maybe 2 or 3 times a month, to add more daily pages). I've been baffled as to why discs are so popular, and your video was exactly the answer I needed!
I played with the disc planners a little bit, being switching the discs in different planners, and the pages really wears out too quickly. But in other reasons yes, I agree with you. I'm thinking about switching to the A5 discs. You haven't mentioned another big con for discs: it's easy to combine different sizes, I. E. having notes from the smaller disc notebooks into the big one A5. I have the A6 disc notebook, and I like that it's small for notes, and I like the A5 for the weekly planning.
I use discs for my teacher planner every year! I need to be able to do all the things you show such as taking notes, flipping it back on itself, and adding things to it. When I use a ring planner, I also always slit all my pages. I am using the EC Daily Duo in rings. I slit all the pages and take them out to write on them. I actually leave the day’s page out on my desk until I am finished with both sides, then I put it up and take out the next day’s page.
EC has been around a long time, has really nice paper and is really accessible so it’s popular. It gets a lot of social media time too but when I used it I wasn’t on social media at all. It was the accessibility, layout and paper that sold me.
I have a C&P half letter that’s collecting dust. One day I will set it up with your GTD bundle and some of your new releases. Happy Sunday MomYePlans 💞
@@MomYePlans I’m currently in my hobonichi weeks and my bullet journal with your monthly and weekly inserts tipped in. I bought this standard tn in olive I’m in love with it. My plan is to bullet journal in my cut down stalogy. Your inserts and bullet journal are my constants.
I love the discbound and I have a half letter size and I came from personal rings size. I left personal size ring size for the same reason you did. How funny 😁
They really are amazing aren’t they! What punch would you recommend??! I’m currently using happy planner and feel like i may need to upgrade if I continue! Thanks for watching!!!
@@MomYePlans I have used the same happy planner punch for about 2.5 years now. It been good for me. I prefer it to the Arc punch due to the length of the punch stem. Happy planner stems are longer and stay on the discs better. I haven't used any other punches but there may well be another better one out there.
half letter disc bound was my most successful planner! I love the half letter - I don't know why but it just the right amount of width for me vs the A5! I have no doubt it will come back - :p
Thank you for this video comparing rings to discs. The first time I viewed it, I missed your acknowledging the difference in sizes not being a valid basis for comparison. With that being said, I acknowledge the other contrasts. My problem with discs is that pages come loose and after a certain number of pages are added, it become very hard to turn the pages without them coming off the discs. Secondly, the vinyl covers are hard and tend to poke me. So, in the end I am going to finally declutter all the “disc stuff, “ as I am very unlikely to go back to that type of planner. Glad for those for whom discs work better. thank you again for the video. Be blessed.
Thanks for watching and for the perspective! I have heard the comment about pages coming loose as well so hopefully it doesn’t become a problem for me. I’m not a big stuffer so hopefully its okay! I’ve heard that issue with rings to for those who made slits which I always did!
Interesting. I’ve never had the pages come loose and I use discs heavily at work in my reference binders I have setup. But I know the disc punch you use plays a part, as well as the paper and your discs. I use HP punches because the stem is longer so the pages stay and move smoother…and i use primarily metal discs which are smoother.
Thoroughly enjoyed this video. I have always felt the same regarding the half letter size and the ability to fold it onto itself AND the ability to not have to have a cover for disc planners. It just feels so different from ring planners. I've got all the supplies to make a disc planner and for some reason, I just can't do it. I dunno...
Ok you’ve got to try it!!! I kinda felt that same way too where I was thinking half letter just wasn’t “it” but having now stuck to it for 2 months I’m obsessed! Try it out for 30 days and maybe it’ll surprise you!!! Thanks so much for watching btw! ❤️
Ack. I have been a HP classic person but feel like it is too big. So was thinking of half letter but it feels too small. I was thinking of A5 in rings even though it isn’t too much bigger than half letter but now you are making me rethink. Lol! I bought a new classic HP and it is so pretty but now I am not sure. Bought a cheap A5 binder to try and figure I can rip out the rings if I am not happy with it. Sigh. So indecisive and we are getting close to the end of the year…
Hey don’t worry I think it happens to all of us this time of year!!! You know what, my best advice is to just give them all a try (in the most budget friendly way possible!). If you don’t satisfy the itch it’ll just come back! At least it does for me haha
Is there a disc punch you can use to punch over the existing hole in the inserts for my LV GM agenda? Your video mentioned you hand cut the paper in your ring binder and was hoping a punch would work.
Is there a planner cover that can hold a half letter disc bound planner? (i.e. Moterm). I'm the same as you! I've gone from HP classic, HP mini, A5, PW binder (just set one up for the first time) and I have a personal size ring binder in the mail. Now I'm wondering about half letter!
I noticed them recently while researching options. Only problem I saw was that the rings are too small for me and they cannot be changed to a larger size.

Wow you’re a discs master! And I agree they’ll definitely be sticking around!
the one really really big plus disks have is it folds over itself, very clean, half the space. my Filofaxes are amazing though. i love them both.
Yesss totally! I love being able to flip it on itself! Thanks for watching!

@@MomYePlans exactly what I’m sitting around thinking today before my Oct setup lol.

I've been using unpunched A5 inserts and punching for half.letrer discs and and LOVE it.

It really is the best isn’t it!? I hear a lot about Erin condren, why do people love it so much?
It has very nice paper, but honestly, I think it is marketing on RUclips and in the planner community that made it popular.

I think most a5 ringless covers will hold half letter discs. Cloth and paper will definitely hold them!
Moterm has a half letter cover! A5 can work too except you’ll usually have to downgrade to small discs. The Moterm cover allows for 1.5” discs!
What do you do for hope punching discs?
