      "How to do research for designing a layout" would be an interesting topic to see. I'm currently trying to figure out how to plan my 1990 Colorado Joint Line and don't really know where to start. How do i know what the track looked like 30 years ago? How do I find out what industries did and did not exist at the time. What parts of the route should I focus on?

    This is one of your best scratch videos ever. Having included sizes, and materials make easier for many of us to adventure into the construction of one of those buildings that will pop up on any layout.
    Thank you.
    These are some of the things that would be nice to have in N scale:
    - Concrete plant with stone feeders and a pit to discharge truck loads of gravel.
    - A large concrete facility may have hoppers bringing sand, gravel and cement making a need to have sand, and gravel piles as well as cement silos. All that can be for processing as well as distribution to smaller concrete plants around the area. That type of structure would include interesting operations for many to enjoy.
    - A glass or window factory

    Ron, you didn’t talk about your glue welding wooden stand. I noticed it. Then after tipping over my welding glue, and spilling on my project, I built my own welding glue stand. The stand works great and I haven’t tipped my glue over. Rob

    So many facets, like even school busses, aren't really made modern or classic in modeling. I appreciate that you are showing us how you build this structure. I indeed hope one day when I start my layout that I can use this to learn from, I believe I will. this is very informative.

    Awesome Ron...I really like the build so far, you do a great job explaining how to research and build a structure for your railroad. I didn't know that you could measure with goggle earth that will come in real handy...There are not enough videos on you tube to show you how to scratch build and yours are among the best...Thank You Tom

    Good build. Looks great. In the future you could just add the bins "onto" the roof keeping the integrity of the roof solid. Personal choice. One thing I have done in the past on long flimsy builds is adding a 1-2" bead of low expanding foam along the inside joint of the roof and wall. Keeps everything straight and does not alter the structure. Works very well on silos like the Medusa cement plant to keep the walls together which have a tendency to come apart. (very little gluing area). I paint the foam in the overall painting of the interior which I paint black on every structure. A great video overall. Thanks again Ron.

      @RonsTrainsNThings  5 лет назад

      Hi, Alan. I considered attaching the bins to the top of the roof, but with the ribbed texture it would show where they say atop the ribs. I figured it would look more realistic to actually come through the roof.

    Another great video Ron ! I love scratch building stuff for my layout using styrene and such ,it gives a great sense of accomplishment and besides,it`s just good fun.
    These tutorials are very useful for those who scratch build or are thinking of scratchbuilding. I used to do a lot of scratch building when I modeled 1/48 model aircraft ,so those skills translated right over to model railroading.Modeling in N scale can at times be a bit of a challenge ,but at times we have little choice if we want to model a prototype or an item that manufacturers don`t make.
    Look forward to the next video and thanks for taking the time to do these !

    That's going to be a very impressive structure, Ron! I have two structures I will be scratchbuilding on my layout: the Rock Island depot in Fairbury, Ne. where my dad worked when I was a boy, and a Rust-eze Medicated Bumper Ointment plant (from Disney's "Cars". Yes, I'm weird.) The depot will probably be only 3/4" deep due to space constraints, but the plant will have a couple of bays where railcars will be spotted inside the building. Thanks for the building tips!

    If that was my layout, I would have added the elevator as is, built half of the DEF building, added both tracks, 1 splitting the elevator and the DEF building as you see on the prototype. Ok to reverse the unloading/loading area to the right end of the DEF building, along with the elevator tracks and track facility. But I really love grain elevators! Good job so far! RH

    You could have used black abs for the skeleton , it is cheap and a lot more sturdy than styrene and does not require so much reinforcement. . Once you have the skeleton just cover it with the appropriate siding material.

    • @RonsTrainsNThings
      @RonsTrainsNThings  5 лет назад

      You could build that way, and I know some who do, but I'm personally not a fan of abs--I find it harder to work with--and it takes more material.

    Great and timely video, as I'm looking for some 'metal siding' to use on a model of a typical metal building/warehouse, and have been having trouble finding the right pattern. I'd like to find a style that matches the typical Morton building or other common steel buildings.

    Curious as to what glue you use Ron? I’ve been using Plastruct Plastic Weld, but feel it has too many “fillers”. It doesn’t seem to get good capillary action to penetrate between the joints. In the old days I use to use MEK, but you can’t seem to buy it anymore. It was the best, but you needed plenty of ventilation while the jar was open.

    • @RonsTrainsNThings
      @RonsTrainsNThings  5 лет назад +1

      At the moment I am using a solvent from flex-i-file. My favorite is Ambroid Pro-Weld, but I have used the Plastruct product with no problems. The important thing with Plastruct is to get the right cement. They have 2--one for styrene only and one for dissimilar or other types of plastic (abs for exame).
