In my experience hmb is a very effective anti catabolic. It seemed to almost completely stop muscle wasting due to severe insomnia and low protein consumption.

I used HMB for a long while. It is worth it. Pre HMB - muscles were growing but a little soft. During HMB - muscles began to increase in density (or do it seamed). People were noticing increased definition.

In the 90's (in muscle media 2000 magazine) Charles Poliquin wrote about how he had success with his athletes taking HMB, but at much higher doses than what are normally studied. Around 6-10 gms daily, gave his athletes noticable benefits in terms of recovery and mass gains. His summary was that the harder you train (plenty of eccentric TUT) the better it worked at meaningful doses.TIming wise, Steven L. Nissen pointed out that blood levels peak around 150 mins after ingestion and that it's useful to bracket your workouts accordingly to ensure high blood levels in the post workout period.

I have Ehlers Danlos syndrome, and weight training is mandatory just to be able to stand up. HMB has a notable effect, appart from the muscle gain and anti-catabolic effects (which might be subjective) : it greatly reduces the severity and frequency of my dystonia episodes. In fact it is being tested for that effect in the hospital I go to (Garches, France) specialized on this syndrome. I have been using it for about 8 months now.

I have some hypermobile joints too.. I think its helping me build up the supporting muscles while I focus on physical therapy. Its helping those muscles not atrophy while I work on getting them firing again so now my pain has reduced a bit. When I'm in pain i stop working out and I lose the progress.

Benefitting greatly from HMB as an older athlete with injuries that have my workouts and calories throttled way back while maintaining strength to get through physical therapy and avoid surgery at all costs... somehow still looking more cut than before and maintaining muscle mass. All of my muscle separations are getting more visible which is unusual... imagining what may happen when I start pushing my training harder again 🤔. I'd like to say it's all been about the nutrition but I think there is something more to it. I think more old people should look at this.

I just skimmed a white paper with 57 trained athletes, combat sports, wrestlers, Judo, and Jiu jitsu, who were tested with HMB and with a placebo; I will have to look again but it seemed that all using HMB had gains in muscle and loss of fat. If I am incorrect I apologize.

    4. When you are old, but still working out, your body produces less HMB. Eventually, you will lose more than you gain no matter how much you work out. Start supplementing with HMB when you are in your 60s.

I'm reading this study "This study indicates that HMB supplementation in athletes training combat sports promotes an advantageous reduction of fat mass and increase in fat-free mass, anaerobic peak power, average power, and post-anaerobic exercise lactate concentrations." Eitherway I dont see any downsides to taking this has it is quite cheap anyways.

Obviously the level of training is going to be higher but the body will also be able to cope with it much better than a new trainee.
