I feel like RGG's best DLC was the Kaito Files. It's basically like the Majima Saga, but better (granted you had to pay for it).
Kaito can upgrade himself and access 2 styles 💪
@@cashmireimagine having upgrades and not a slow moveset -this coment was made by majima saga fans
I'm glad they started doing DLC like the Kaito Files, all things considered, and I'm looking forward to more. I just hope future instances add a bit more replay value to them.
Just too expensive considering it's too linear
Kaito Files is what Majima Saga wishes it could be
(and what it should've been like)
26:02 of course people were mad, it's called the KARAOKE SET, not jukebox set. You can't blame people for thinking they were gonna lock karoke musics with a name like that.
Leon forgetting about Dead Souls is such a Yakuza fan thing to do.
Leon just trying to be like RGG-sama by forgetting best Yakuza game.
Also, Dead Souls 2 when?
@@blackjacktrialDEAD SOULS KIWAMI WHEN
@@akiyomerThis but unironically.
Dead Souls Kiwami and Binary Domain Extreme when?
@@lemonov3031 YES WHEN
Dead souls doesn't even count.
To think in infinite wealth they actually went through looking difficulties a new game + behind DLC.
If I remember correctly, the "Landlady's Gift Basket" DLC items in Judgement were weird and had a separate spot in your inventory than normal items of the same type, and healed much more than they normally would. Doesn't really make it more useful for DLC, but just a really odd choice for RGG to make.
Yagami's true power was love all along
For Lost Paradise, "Ai wo Torimodose" and "Tough Boy" are NOT part of the western release most likely because of licensing issues.
It seems Mr.Leon7 is posting a lot of bangers this month. Mad respect for the work you're putting in. Hopefully a yakuza or non yakuza stream will come in the future.
I'm hoping to bring back the regular streams some time, I miss chatting with you all on the regular! :)

There will always be a large disconnect between normies laughing at memes and a core fanbase.
I actually really liked The Kaito Files, even if it could’ve been priced a bit better. I hope they keep doing short, story-based DLC like that in the future. Hopefully there won’t be any day 1 DLC when it comes to story DLC, like Atlus does with Persona (both under SEGA)
I’m not sure if certain DLCs may be more prominent in sales in Japan than the West or internationally.
It could explain why some smaller features like Clan Creator got their own DLC and RGG studios sees it as a good financial decision.
They definitely put a lot of extra money into 6's Clan Creator and it had Japanese pro wrestlers, so I think it was a good financial decision to make it a dlc, especially for Japan
Didn't know much about the DLCs for 3 and 4, so this was an interesting watch.
One thing to also mention. The PC release of Lost Judgment made both the school stories pack and detective essentials pack free with the game. The only paid content in the PC release was The Kaito Files.
Regardless, keep up the good work Leon. Looking forward to future content.
Cut to 5 months later and Sega has once again locked NG+ for LAD: Infinite Wealth behind a 20 dollar paywall.
Damn I had no idea how bad dlc was back in Yakuza 3. Guess I was lucky with the remastered collection
My personal issue with the Ishin DLCs were the one-time only DLC that you mentioned, but also that the highest difficulty in the game was locked behind DLC as well. All of this just left a bad taste in my mouth

Thank you so much! I was planning to add them in a bit but this is a big help :)
I'll be real the Matriarch DLC for Yakuza 7 borderline felt essential. Having Han be the only consistent source of gun damage in the game would have made some things an absolute ball ache.
Once I tried it out I pretty much never took Saeko off Matriarch after unlocking the other class skills. Gun damage was just too rare to come by and Bullet of Honor was clutch for Vagabond spawns. Maybe not 100% essential, but good enough I didn’t feel cheated even without using Devil Rocker all that much.
As a newer fan, this was very interesting to learn about. I had no clue weird DLC practices for the Yakuza series started with 3. So thanks for the video! Also, based for the Streets of Rage 4 poster.
Thank you! Good to have you with us, buddy!
im only 4 months yakuza fan..
Im iffy on the dlc rgg has done. On some parts, you have stuff like the Kaito dlc, which gives you a whole new playable character with a fun story, and then you have ba stuff like the ishin weapons or judgment drone parts, and it sucks because if they do something similar to say, like a dragon with its free dlc updates, i might be more inclined to purchase dlc, at least the ones i care for, lol
Mad respect to you Leon for making this video. New content from you is always a treat!
The best part about the Ishin costume dlc was being able to use them in the story I definitely makes new play through more fun I mean imagine being able to see Shrimpnada in cutscenes that would be awesome
Omg please keep making these long form videos, incredible job
Masterfully presented! I hope we'll see more videos like this in the future, cause the focus on a "live action" camera makes it feel like a really fun college lecture
Thank you so much! A pleasure seeing you here

i used to just watch ur vids for random yakuza stuff but after catching some of your lives and other videos your such a chill dude, keep it up always glad to see a new vid or live from you!
amazing video! the new format is very cozy!
Awesome video! Hope to see you live again soon!
I really, really enjoyed this format! keep up the good work man
Verry informative! I think a lot of people got on the Yakuza train with the release of 0. And ever since then, the older games that were re-released included all of the DLC already. That's why for many it feels like 7 started the whole DLC trend. Thanks for the info.
I forgot about the dlc in the yakuza games 😢😢😢
This is the kind of video that I like, long and well informed, perfect to put it on the background while doing yakuza 3 substories xd
I love these format of videos quite chill and educational also on the topic dlc that not a case of new or old it been around in many games since the concept was made and the way some companies handle it makes me question my sanity honesty
I got into the series fairly late, so this is merely my opinion:
Personally I'm inclined to agree with how DLC has been viewed for the series. Part of what made the Yakuza series appeal to me was that past installments were COMPLETE games at release (take 0 for instance). That's very rare in modern times but now I feel that with the change in leadership, RGG Studios is kinda following the trend (imo Yakuza 7 and Lost Judgment for example).
Yeah one thing I loved about Y0 was how I could actually unlock everything in game, having things as DLC that would've been previously unlocked just feels lame.
7 and lost judgement were complete at release though? The DLC is just part of the higher grade editions, which work out about the same price as new games anyway. I really don't mind paying a bit more for some little bits and pieces that help me get an early boost in money so I can play all the mini games straight away
As someone who only got into Yakuza a few years ago I wasn't really under impression that DLCs were a new thing for the series, but it was a very interesting watch nonetheless! While I'm not a fan of this practice, as long as it's some cosmetic fluff or items that make the game easier (or break the balance completely), I don't really mind it if that's the cost of keeping corporate sharks at bay.
I’m worried about the kind of DLC they’ll implement in future games. Like they took notes from Majima’s tax plan and they’re slowly trying to see what they can get away with. The premium adventure and harder difficulties dlc was them figuring out where the line was
I like this type of videos, the substory theme really makes it smooth and funny
This might be one of your best videos. A lot of newer fans dont really know how many aspects of these games looked back in the early days and they just repeat what some folk made up on Twitter. Videos about the history of the series like this are pretty rad and I hope you make some more of these, since most of the information about topics like this is stuck in 11 year old GameFAQS threads.
Also would love to see you cover the bizzare Walkman DLC with how it was distributed. It was so dumb
didn't think about it until you kinda pointed it out in editing, but the yakuza 3 boxart does look really funny.
In Judgement, those are not just Drone skins, they are Drone Shell. Drone Shell determine the HP of your drone and how much Slot point you will have. More Slot point means you can equip better drone part, in game you can get the Drone Shell with the same amount of Slot points but they have like very low HP, meaning if you don't get the DLC, and you want to won the last tournament, you need to win it without hitting anything since you get hit max 1 time. I barely get past that WITH the DLC so I can't even imagine doing it WITHOUT DLC.
Honestly I liked Lost Judgment's dlc more than the main story.
Same, that shit was peak
You see It's hard to make a DLC when you make a full game in the time it usually takes to make a DLC.
Considering what a nightmare it is nowadays to browse the actual PS3 store. Just having a video that lists every DLC is very helpful! (I might pick up that Yakuza 4 Theme before it finally shuts down for good haha)
Also stuff like the Y6 Clan Creator codes existing online, the Lost Judgement Season Pass having the Kaito Files (Which the store doesn't mention for some reason) or the Karaoke Set of 7 not actually having Karaoke songs. I learned a whole bunch of new things thanks to this video, so thanks a lot Leon!
Imagine if Majima Saga was paid DLC
For the yakuza 3 question: no, i didn't know
I bet it could be a little more better and less short, still liked it tho
Keep up the good stuff mr leon love your vids :)
I'll have to check my history, but I believe the physical only DLC for Y3 was during the time companies saw used game sales as a threat. The thankfully short phase of other games having content only for the physical version and things such as 'online passes'.
It's a good day when devilleon7 uploads!

@@devilleon7 Don't worry, it's italian after all 😝
I agree that Kaito Files was a bit overpriced at $30. Thats why I just bought the season pass for $35. Felt more valid.
Another Devilleon7 Banger.
great video , didnt knew other old Yazuka games had these types of dlc .
there is a similar **one use only item** like in ishin are in Yazuka 7 too . ( character/weapon level up , i see them every time on their steam store page )
the reason people blamed ishin more than 7 i guess it was because some Yazuka fans didnt played/liked 7 for being turn-based or its too grindy or not playing as kiryu .
i do feel they made these two games grindy as hell to sell those **one use only item** . ( didnt played ishin yet but oh boy i needed those level ups for Yazuka 7 because i got bored at grinding ( i used cheat/FLiNG of course to finish the game, thanks to chapter 9 ) )
I find it easier to grind in YLAD than in DQ. Plus, the consistent crafting material rewards from sotenbori arena is godsend.
can confirm that those item sets were free for lost paradise, as i was wondering what the kid was doing there i got a bunch of free stuff and even a helll of thos medallion skills inluding a chicken that shts out a crap ton of money each time you use it.
I like long video formats because I can have something playing on the background as I do other things
22:43 I still vividly remember the immense backlash that Deus Ex Mankind Divided’s “Pre-Order Campaign” got for doing something similar. It’s a bit different in that enough people had to preorder it to get the early access in the first place, but I still think it’s crappy to lock early access behind a preorder
ty devilleon for this intresting history i dident knew about a dlc in 3,4 lol learned something new haha
I like this style of video because I listen to a lot of yt podcast style
13:11 Leon's favourite song 😂
Infinite Wealth continues the tradition by having NG+ DLC🙏
I like this type of content i think this works well for your channel. Also nice hidden sponsorship at fhe end.

The bundle is also on the Xbox version of Yakuza 6
Woah this is a pretty long vid, lemme get my popcorn
Don't know why but every time I hear your voice it makes me smile 😊 Only Majima's laugh has similar effect. Thanks for sharing nice moments with us.
Weird
I'm glad I dodged the Business Management DLC for Like A Dragon; building up from scratch feels so good instead of loading up Kiryu, Majima, and Seong-hui in a property for an instant perfect-rounded team. Besides, can you imagine those three trying to run an arcade, or a grocery store? Heavens forbid they're the only employees at Dianthus!! 😅
Also, you probably get this a lot, but Quinton Reviews and you must've been separated at birth. I do not intend this to be rude; both of you look great with the hair and beard lol
in the og yakuza 3 the EX rank for haruka's trust was dlc(and you can only get to EX rank in premium adventure btw), a request in it was giving 30 million yen to someone, that purgatory tournament dlc would give you half a million yen each time you complete it i think (and i remember battle for survival would give way more money but obviously takes more time) so maybe gives that much money to specifically grind for the request, if you can't grind the tournament tho you can also just fish tunas over and over (they sell for 100K yen each), and idk any other good way to grind money
Love the in depth coverage. Recency bias in gaming can get out of control. I however understand it is a newer industry and is always changing.
YakuzaGuy7 with another BANGER? Let's goooooo
I got yakuza like a dragon's ultimate hero edition on sale for like $20 so that was a solid deal, it was a bit worrying seeing all that dlc stuff for 7 and issin though
Yo him talking about DLCs.
Working on catching up on the Yakuza games no upgrades live streams you've done. Onto 3.

yakuza 0 finale reference
Answering the second question right at the beginning - yes, I can still say that "old okay, new pretty bad. I mean at back in the day SEGA's bad decisions at least, AT LEAST were condenced to EU/US. You said it yourself pretty much: Yakuza 3 stuff was free. New costumes, new fun, but inconsequential modes - those were updates originally. SEGA in its infinite wisdom decided to make them pre-order DLCs and thus missable outside Japan, which is shitty, but at least you can say that it was SEGA of America/Europe dumb decision making, that's it.
10 years later Yakuza 7 comes out without NG+ and Difficulty modes which japanese players had to buy (dirt cheap at first, not so dirt cheap later). And while international version, Yakuza: Like a Dragon, came with those QoL things that should've been free, they still decided to sell jobs, some of which are pretty good and useful.
13 years later and SEGA sells 1-use-only DLCs for pretty broken port of Ishin! And not just costumes and items, but an entire difficulty mode is also 1-use-only. And not just in EU/US, globally.
You can't possibly compare those and say "yeah, way back when things were also bad if not worse". I can live without a few colliseum modes, but intentionally locking up difficulty options and classes behind a paywall for everyone is a bad move.
And yeah, I remember those DLCs back on PS3.
I also remember Ishin having DLCs on PS4 which they delisted recently. Which is also a shitty move all about "old good, new bad", actually, because this is just evil.
If you say extra modes are inconsequential then by that logic, the extra "Ishin" difficulty" of LAD Ishin is also that for a couple of reasons:
1 - It wasn't in the original
2 - It doesn't reward you with any single item to my knowledge.
3 - It brings nothing new except enemies taking more to kill.
About 99% of the Yakuza DLC we get is inconsequential IMO. Costumes, extra items, extra modes, and the like, and that definitely includes an extra difficulty that goes beyond EX-Hard/Legend. By definition, you wouldn't need any of those to enjoy the game normally, you can absolutely get through Yakuza 7 without the extra classes, and you can technically get by literally every single game without buying any of the DLC. But it's definitely fun to have the extra classes, much like how you described the extra modes of Yakuza 3. I'm not defending DLCs because I agree that locking stuff like that behind DLC in general sucks, but at the same time, there were questionable decisions recently just like there were back then. The only difference is that now with the fanbase being bigger, people are actually more vocal about it. You're also forgetting that even if some of the PS3 Yakuza games had free DLC, the PS3 era also had a lot of region lock issues and differences in PSN store content which is a whole can of worms on its own, during a time where Playstation thought only the US and EU exist on earth.
Also, Yakuza 5 (Japanese version) had DLCs - free costumes and all that. They were distributed in form of patches, but still. Same goes to Yakuza 0, which, admittedly, also had Walkman DLC in Japan (which was sold not only on PSN, but in retail, on disc with those licensed tracks).
@@devilleon7 Nah, even with that logic it's not really compatable because NG+ and difficulty options were part of the package for a looong time. I heard RGGS's excuse about it ("we couldn't make it in time"), but why not make it a free update then? Like you did before since Yakuza 3? So you're telling me in 2010 they could make new costumes and modes free, but now they can't? Really? All the while Colliseum thing was 100% extra thing that doesn't feel like cut content.
And yeah, I agree about most of DLCs in the past being pretty inconsequential. The difference is the way RGGS handled those things - "hey, you loved the game? here's a little bonus on the house!" Now it's "hey, how about you pay us extra for one (1!) costume for Kiryu? Wanna pay us extra again for difficulty option you can use on 1 save file?" It's just feels scummy now, don't you agree? Especially considering the state game came out (and still is mostly).
I was with Yakuza not from the beginning (even though I read about the game before it came out in the West and wanted to play it back in 2006), but since late 2011. I saw how SEGA mishandled IP back then in the West and saw cool stuff studio did just because and without strings attached in Japan. Hey, how about a companion app? Go get it, tiger. Or weekly updates with costumes and little things that make crafting easy? Sure, why not. And DLCs felt like really neat extra things like walkman, not crappy scraps from the table that used to be free in 2010 (in Japan).
I'll put it simple: most of stupid DLC stuff of the past was due SEGA of America making some weird decisions (region locking and PSN shananingans you mentioned) in order to squeeze a quick buck from pretty small audience. Now it feels like it's RGGS's idea of milking the brand now that it's pretty well-known. Simple as.
And to be perfectly honest about the timeline of my disillusionment - it all started with dumb Judge Eyes DLCs. Lost Judgment is even worse in this regard aside from Kaito's Files.
That Streets of Rage 4 poster looks really nice
I really enjoyed this video.
The Kaito Files was amazing!
Mr. Leon is making a another great yakuza video!
There is also DLC exclusive for Japan like the Walkman dlc for Yakuza 0. That was a cool one.
One thing that I do want to point out, unless there are sources that say otherwise. Most cash grab DLC decisions tend to be publisher decided, in this case Sega as opposed to the actual dev team. That has been a bit unfair criticism by a lot of outlets that don't differentiate.
Oh wow, I played RGG3 back in the day, and so I didn't know Y3 was THAT cut down on.
Something else to note
The four warriors cutscenes is a callback to Ishin.
I liked the sawcon DLC they included with Ishin
amazing video
I fell for the yakuza 7 dlc for the jukebox I thought the character would sing it,was a bit upset but got over it really quick I should of read the description of the dlc
@devilleon7 Just want to say that the Yakuza 6 clan creator bundle that was released for PC is also available for the Xbox One version as well.
The way RGG treats DLC (cosmetics and item packs) feels like nihon falcom treats them. They add some cosmetics and a item packs (that reduce some grinding regarding shining poms etc) as DLC.
The Newest, Weirdest DLC: The ability to use a feature thats in every other game in the series
Thank you for making this video. More people should be thankful that the dlc RGG releases now is mostly arbitrary currency and item packs, and not paywalled content. Yakuza isn't exactly a blockbuster game so I understand they have to try and make some extra money.
Quality video!
This was a "fun" trip down memory lane. Still have my physical copy of Yakuza 3 with the dlc code in it I picked up on launch day, I always made sure to preorder each game so I wouldn't miss out on any content, even though I never used any of it. 3, 4 and Dead Souls all came out when I was in college, so I remember having to pass up other games I was interested in for them. I even bought Dead Souls over Binary Domain because Sega of America thought launching those games a few weeks apart would be a great idea.
I do wish you'd dug into Japanese DLC more, if I remember right all of rhe support packs you'd get from Bob in the PS3 era games were DLC originally, so stuff like those content updates in Yakuza 0 were things people had to pay money for. And there's some Japanese exclusive DLC, like a Walkman you could use in Yakuza 0, and I think a different costume pack in Dead Souls in place of the America one.
As much as I didn't love that FOMO with the old pre-order stuff in the PS3 days, I might still prefer it to just having to buy an expensive version of the game to get all the content, or having to look at spreadsheets to figure out which edition has meaningful DLC and which one is just adding a bunch of cosmetics. It was nice when just being there for the series on day one was enough to get you everything.
The dlcs for dragon engine games were pretty great tbh
Lol the only reason i know this is recently i dug into this topic myself.
I recently picked up Dead Souls and started digging around the PS3 store for Yakuza stuff
kiryu like a dragon dlc is very cool

I'd honestly want RGG to make a another DLC like the Kaito files but with Sugiura.
I sometimes feel tempted to buy the DLC but I never do cause I rather not support the practice. I think it was judgment and Fist of the northstar that tempted me the most.
