Including the Pan African Flag in the clothing was so genius. I didnt even realize that watching the movie the first go around. Also the stress on Black Femininity is just amazing. This brother is A1✊🏾
Well... it's the directors job! 😂 this is a good one because he knows what he's doing with context, colour scheme and production design in relation to character and story. unlike some people who just shoot for the sake of shooting and money. But this takes at least months worth of pre planning and it all starts with Ryan drawing on a piece of paper laying out what he wants and telling the crew exactly that
Block kcet You are the kind of person I hate, stop trying to split directors into "white directors" and "black directors" and just call him a director. You are going backwards.
Yeah, that's amazing. Also when he said Claw wearing blue represented colonization made me feel bad for wearing my blue hoodie under my black leather jacket to movie, especially as a white dude.
A lot of directors used to do just that, though just on audio only. There was a secondary track on a lot of DVDs and Blu-rays that you could turn on, and it'd be the director giving lots of backstory on what was happening scene-by-scene. I don't know if they still do this as I've stopped buying physical media and have switched to digital purchases only.
Ronnje F They still do it. They're called director commentaries. And I'm pretty sure for some recent films, that came out digitally. You can get the special features, which include the director commentary.
JUDAH THE LION It was explained in the movie that Killmonger was royalty by way of his father being the brother of T'Chaka. So he had the right to challenge T'Challa for the throne. *Pay Attention*
I love the wakanda General she is so powerful and incredible with her fight choreography. That chanting that comes up every time she fights adds the perfect touch of their culture. Truly amazing.
Joan Cassie.. OMG.. i am soo obsessed with that chanting i googled and searched in youtube hoping to find that but dint 😢. okoye is so awesome her fight looks like a beautiful dance. blackpanther is an awesome movie!
Buclodi He mentioned that blue symbolizes colonization and if during a segment in the movie, Ross was wearing a blue Wakandan cloak. Maybe they’re saying he’s been accepted? Really neat.
yea ross was really accepted since in the comics he's more or less always there and a veeery good friend of t'challa, always being saved and saving him. ross is more or less the only white good chara you will constatnly see in black panther. he's a black panther comics character. ross was loyal to t'challa, never did him dirty, respected them, and a good friend who always helped and even help save a couple oftimes. so yea he's more or less accepted already.
When I saw this scene, myself and the black woman next to me both started cheering when she threw the wig and both went "she used the wig!!" It was quite a moment.
I almost felt like he would have talked about how he took the molecules in the clothing into consideration when filming so that they would reflect the right kind of lighting effect for the shot. This man is clearly a movie making genius. Such detail.
I love how he's geeking out here. Showing us how true genius has a childlike quality. It was the late great Jim Henson who said, "The most sophisticated people I know - inside they're all children."
He literally thinks about EVERY detail.... people who "over" analyze make BRILLIANT directors.... there is no flaw. Love the fact that he went deep for this.... Makes me love the movie even more.
Does anyone else love hearing him speak AAVE in such typically posh, white spaces? I'm so happy that he's aware & brave enough as a young black man to even try to discuss, present, and challenge society's ideas of black femininity in a blockbuster movie! Coogler is just great a creator and person!
Erwin Canaya, you are dead right. An Oakland or Southern accent for example really have no impact on a human beings competence, creativity or brilliance.
That was my only problem with this video 😂 tbh. He speaks plainly which is nice but he stutters a lot and draws things out which for my whole life I've found personally annoying. But that's a me thing. I like how Taika Waititi talks with a lot of purpose and direction. Probably cause he's good at improv so he's always ready to say things perfectly when he thinks of them.

And yet some people like how Jeff Goldblum stutters and stammers (purposely, by his own admission)--I'm one of them. I love how Ryan Coogler keeps his dialect real. He doesn't feel the need to "put on" for people who judge based on accent/dialect, and I respect that so much (especially as a Southerner).
Is anyone else as obsessed with Ryan Coogler as I am??! Hes a genious yet hes so adorable and gentle and humble etc. Hes so intriguing. I love listening to him speak.
I love that he likes to say "this person would be here at this point" He keeps track of his characters at all times, a difficult and useful skill to have It really helps to immerse the audience if the set up and movement is constantly understood and thought out
I really hope Disney and Marvel let him do a Directors cut and I would love to watch a directors VO and also a VO with other cast and crew members especially costume and set design. So much love and talent went into this film.
I came here to write this.... this was so well done and it was just off the cuff. So much thought went into that one scene, I can’t wait for the DVD. Please let there be director’s commentary!
Master of None: No... They never did... I don't think that's their style... But if they did plan on releasing a Director's Cut, this movie should definitely be their first choice...
Oh man this is incredible!!!!!!! and I'm saying this not as a fan but as an english teacher as well, because seeing directors talk about their films and mention key points in their films is incredible if you want to analyse the film, and this video? Incredible, perfect.
I love how deeply they think about 1 scene. My favorite part was the clothing aspect because people so easily overlook the clothing. "Blue is the color of colonization," an incredible feat.
+qwerttzizzi Wakanda is still a part of Africa though, so it's the countries flag. Just like Canada, all the provinces have their own provincial flag, but we still all use the Canadian flag.
I love that for the female characters he accentuates their femininity as well as their heritage and they're both not only highlighted but presented as a strength.
i love that he's so intelligent and talented but still uses ebonics or AAVE in his language and speaking patterns. Kinda telling people to drop their assumptions without saying.
This is a man who already made it in life and is succesful and everyone knows. Don't try to speak "ebonics" on your job interview... totally different outcome I guess
ExTremeHYPE Creed? My local AMC was 90%+ full for 9/10 shows(and that's because the first two rows are too close for a lot of people) every day since it came out. I looked at the reserved seats for every showing so far and I would be shocked if some sort of opening weekend ticket sales record was not broken.
Yup. Seen it twice and I’m not even big on seeing movies multiple times in theaters. It was JUST as enjoyable the second time around. And you should also check his other movies out. Not sure how you would’ve missed Creed but that and Fruitvale Station was well done.
I love the way he breaks everything down. I actually feel sorry that I didn’t catch all these wonderful themes and ideas when I was watching the movie.
superhero films are FILMS at their root, with a lot of intellectual details, study and references. superhero films must be taken seriously in this century!!!
Honestly I'm not sure most marvel studio films get this subtle treatment. To me, things got better with Dr strange: lackluster story, but at last, fun visuals. The last Thor movie also had a sense of fun and of destruction of the idols (to the point that they undermine good story moments). I haven't seen this one yet, but if everything is on this level with layered meanings, this one could be the most meaningful marvel movie yet.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA. Not since Nolan's Batman trilogy have any of your words been remotely true. Marvel movies are not for superhero fans because if you were one, you'd hate how boring and pathetic these 'superhero films' are
Bourg: oh, I thought most comics fans really liked marvel studio films, and on the opposite end, I really thought the nolan movies were basically superhero movies for people who hate superheroes. looks like i'm mistaken. I mostly agree with you: marvel movies are never great film. They're nice film. Popcorn flicks. I'm still curious about this one because of the director and all the pan-african and afro american background.
chaoszieg LMAO. You’re pretty much stranded alone on a desert island with that opinion buddy. The movie is breaking all kinds of records all over the world. Some high level Marvel people even said it’s their best film to date. I think it’s a masterpiece. Easily the best comic book movie ever made. One of the best movies I’ve ever seen period overall. This is next level for comic book movies.
chaoszieg Can you actually name a plot hole, piece of bad story telling or bad character with actual reason and logic rather than just stating such things? Because I disagree.
It's amazing how much detail is put into every aspect of a scene that we don't seem to catch on the surface because it has a deeper meaning. Much respect to Ryan Coogler and many other film directors for making this look easy.
I went back and watched this movie a second time in the theater just so I could see this scene again. It's one of the best scenes I've ever seen, period. I'm so happy that I randomly stumbled upon this video, because I wanted to know as many details behind how they shot this as possible. This is amazing!
I honestly had to pause this video just to say how amazing this all is. I pride myself on paying attention to detail and I can't believe the pan African flag colors escaped me when I viewed it.
O Williams YES! LOL The contrast of beauty vs. aggression 2020 and femininity used as a weapon 1010 course would have me in the front row!!! LMAO I love this! I love US! This movie really really gave us a lil glimpse of the fun in unity here.
At 30 years old? With 3 successful hit movies as a novice? Yea, that's almost every film director. Give credit where credit is due or just shut up, because these are not common accomplishments at his age. Show me how many 30 year old or younger directors have done this well within this decade.
Does this video have "every film director" or just Coogler? It's like telling your girlfriend she's beautiful, than turning around and telling her "every girl is beautiful". Just let the man have his moment
I can't wait to listen to the commentary for Black Panther because Ryan clearly put so many small details in everything that just went over my head, or I never thought about looking for.
a few clowns equating a slight speech impediment & Oakland Bay era accent as lack of intelligence. (Bruh was working on his Master's degree and decided to do film and scriptwriting) others or not paying attention and don't know the difference between Okoye traditionalist. (hence no gun) vs Nakia @5:35 "is the innovator". (hence a gun)
This shows that directors are responsible for everything that goes on in a scene. They need to get more credit for whats good and take more flak for whats bad.
It's amazing how the director can explain the scene piece by piece, frame by frame. That's what every director should have the ability to do. As a person who wants to direct, I can tell he's very insightful. This inspires me. Thank you! 😁
Including the Pan African Flag in the clothing was so genius. I didnt even realize that watching the movie the first go around. Also the stress on Black Femininity is just amazing. This brother is A1✊🏾
Great film love it
Ironic seeing as this is not a Pan African film.
@@daustin8888 I don’t think that was the point. But yea
Listening to Ryan Coogler break the scenes down was AWESOME! I have a new found respect for directors now.
I bet my last dollar zack Synder and Michael bay doesn't plan their fight scenes like this black director. ryan coogler is awesome.
Block kcet Absolutely 100% agree.
Well... it's the directors job! 😂 this is a good one because he knows what he's doing with context, colour scheme and production design in relation to character and story. unlike some people who just shoot for the sake of shooting and money. Definitely!
Block kcet You are the kind of person I hate, stop trying to split directors into "white directors" and "black directors" and just call him a director. You are going backwards.
Never would've caught the red black and green theme on my own. That's dope!!
VZA The fact that he actually include the black, green and red blow my mind!
Yeah, that's amazing. Also when he said Claw wearing blue represented colonization made me feel bad for wearing my blue hoodie under my black leather jacket to movie, especially as a white dude.
colonizer lol
sirus804 lol no need to feel bad for that my dude. Come on
sirus804 don't feel bad bro.
Brilliant breakdown. I didn’t realize all these fine details. I wish he could do the whole movie
Adnan A cause its kinda mediocre that's why
Adnan A Agreed
A lot of directors used to do just that, though just on audio only. Justin Villarreal Mediocre: Unoriginal and not unique. Black Panther is the complete opposite of that.
there’s so many details in the movie that you have to pay attention to and i love it!!
Like who won the duel between Killmonger and Tchalla on the waterfall?
Like all movies right
JUDAH THE LION It was explained in the movie that Killmonger was royalty by way of his father being the brother of T'Chaka. So he had the right to challenge T'Challa for the throne. *Pay Attention*
Justin Carson no
It demands multiple viewings to process it all.
Ryan Coogler was the absolute perfect choice to direct this movie
Ikr
Yup
Most definitely. Perfect choice.
I love the wakanda General she is so powerful and incredible with her fight choreography. That chanting that comes up every time she fights adds the perfect touch of their culture. Truly amazing.
Joan Cassie she was my mom's favorite
Gen 116 I agree with your mother.
Joan Cassie.. OMG.. i am soo obsessed with that chanting i googled and searched in youtube hoping to find that but dint 😢. okoye is so awesome her fight looks like a beautiful dance. blackpanther is an awesome movie!
jahnavi panduri its actually the ending part of the song “king’s dead-jay rock, kendrick lamar”.
Her name is Danai Gurira. Zimbabwean. We are super proud !
Femininity used as a weapon. Beauty and aggression. I love it.
That thing about the Pan African flag blew my mind a little bit. 1:57 so cool.
Buclodi He mentioned that blue symbolizes colonization and if during a segment in the movie, Ross was wearing a blue Wakandan cloak. Maybe they’re saying he’s been accepted? Really neat.

I know!!!!
So sad that Pan Africanism devolved into an ignorant, racist and violent ideology.
munky82 Bruh
I thought I had respect for Ryan Coogler. Now I have mad respect for Ryan Coogler
This is the most animated I've seen Ryan Coogler, in most interviews he's too chill
missingno your name and avi just took me waay back lol kudos
Looooove your name
He clearly loves his craft
It’s cause he’s passionate about what he’s talking about here
I was thinking the same thing lol love it
When I saw this scene, myself and the black woman next to me both started cheering when she threw the wig and both went "she used the wig!!" It was quite a moment.
I NEED THIS FOR THE ENTIRE MOVIE!!!
Likely gonna be on the bluray like in gotg 2
Deleted wow really? Nice
Marvel Blurays include directors' commentary, the Doctor Strange one was awesome
ProphetVictory director commentary lol
Director commentary and an annotated video lecture are not the same thing.
The Dora chant gives me goosebumps each time they fight.
So much respect for Ryan. Incredibly down to Earth, intelligent guy and his passion spills through every frame of this movie. Easily Marvel's best.
Reece Robertson yep
Reece Robertson James gunn, and the Russo bros have something too say
Crispy Wafflez Can't agree. I thought the first Guardians was boring and GOTG2 is great but it has nothing on Black Panther.
gunswordfist the first Guardians wasn't boring. It wasn't anything amazing, but it was definitely fun.
gunswordfist Black Panther Is overrated Black Twitter made it seem better than It was
I almost felt like he would have talked about how he took the molecules in the clothing into consideration when filming so that they would reflect the right kind of lighting effect for the shot. This man is clearly a movie making genius. Such detail.
😂😂
I love how he's geeking out here. Showing us how true genius has a childlike quality. It was the late great Jim Henson who said, "The most sophisticated people I know - inside they're all children."
HAHA too soon too savage
JarelTheArtist how is it too soon. What he has achieved at his age is unprecedented
I think he meant mentioning Kevin Spacey who's been accused of sexually abusing a child.
That's a great quote.
He's not a genius. Yet. Maybe not.
LUPITAS BACK LOOKS INCREDIBLE!!!!!!
i thought i was the only one who noticed
Dsoul lol naaaah fam.
That back is all the business...good lord...😍😍😍
He literally thinks about EVERY detail.... people who "over" analyze make BRILLIANT directors.... there is no flaw. Love the fact that he went deep for this.... Makes me love the movie even more.
Dana Labloom every director does this
Justin Carson No not every one
Justin Carson jj abrahms dont and he sucks
Except for like George Lucas.
HAHAH Wtf are you on
I'm South African and I love how he said 'Xhosa'! Those clicks are not easy, and so wonderful to see my language represented in the film!
SAME OMG I LOVE THE CLICKS
With a Sotho name, I don't think you're Xhosa. Am I right? Lol.
@@Mohapi_Tau lol! I'm Xhosa and Sotho :).
Ryan can say Xhosa. I'm impressed.
I can say it to. Whts impressive is that he had the intelligence to add all these little details

Speaking AAVE in posh white spaces...reminds you of Killmonger's first scene, huh?
What’s AAVE (genuinely don’t know)
Bangtanlover 12 African American Vernacular
He is not speaking AAVE. He simply has an Oakland accent.
What a stupid comment. Literally one of the worst
I can't believe he's only 30 and is already such a successful director
Robbie H That's marvel for ya
Shy Guy lol he was successful before marvel... Fruitvale station and Creed which is why Marvel brought him in for this movie
TimDaGoof the crazy thing is those are the only films he has directed, and they are all critically acclaimed
Robbie H exactly, can’t wait to see what else he directs in the future, huge motivation to youngsters wanting to take this direction in their career
Why not? That's about the age where a lot of (good) directors get attention. I've been following his stuff eagerly since fruitvale.
Okoye throwing her wig will always be my favorite part of that scene.
Someone talked about how he's successful but still sounds hella Oakland. And I'm here like yupp. Respect
Erwin Canaya, you are dead right. An Oakland or Southern accent for example really have no impact on a human beings competence, creativity or brilliance.
Nah, I think he has a speech impediment.
That was my only problem with this video 😂 tbh. He speaks plainly which is nice but he stutters a lot and draws things out which for my whole life I've found personally annoying. He doesn't feel the need to "put on" for people who judge based on accent/dialect, and I respect that so much (especially as a Southerner).
Are we really gloss over the fact that Ryan just referred to the black panther as "Not the average bear". I've never felt more related to in my life.
Yo, I probably never would've noticed the subtlety and significance of the color schemes. This scene has amazing lighting too.
Hearing people who had a hand in this film talk about it, you can FEEL the intense love and thought that went into every detail.
I'd pay a lofty sum to watch Ryan Coogler break down the entire movie like he does here.
If you have Disney plus, it’s on there now in the “extras” section of black Panther titled “directors commentary” and it’s awesome
Is anyone else as obsessed with Ryan Coogler as I am??! Hes a genious yet hes so adorable and gentle and humble etc. Hes so intriguing. I love listening to him speak.
The one shot in this scene is amazing
agreed!
Jasen Effendy stitched together to look like a one shot
“I made it rain!”
First Filipino Nurse Yeah the cuts are pretty obvious but not quite Kingsman 2 level obvious but still a good shot
Watch the scene in the movies it’s way better than RUclips I swear
Wow... Ryan Coogler is brilliant. A young black man with such professionalism and genuis is truly an inspiration
*a young (black) talented filmmaker
I'm reminded of the song "Young, Gifted, and Black". ;)
Hey guys, I kinda feel if he can direct horror films, I think he’d be a really awesome director to direct the new Spawn movie!
Lupita is just...😍😍😍
I know who I'm talking. 😒
You catch that scene before the first challenge when she’s dancing on the boat?? Thicc
Ryan is right, she is one of the most beautiful people in the world 😍
He packed this movie so full of symbolism. You could watch it 100 times and still find something new. Truly a master craftsman!
This looks like he’s breaking down a football play on espn.
The man is a genius.
He used to be a football player so that kind of explains it
Nicholas Coffey I was thinking the same thing.
Loved the part with him talking about the 3D printed set and how it felt like playing with action figures.
Cant wait for the Black Panther dvd to have a director cut!!!
fox2320 you don’t have a blu ray player?
I love that he likes to say "this person would be here at this point"
He keeps track of his characters at all times, a difficult and useful skill to have
It really helps to immerse the audience if the set up and movement is constantly understood and thought out
Yea they should designate a person to do that all the time in movies, maybe they should call it a "director"
john thompson to be fair, there’s some pretty crappy directors. So having a secondary person assigned to that in each thing couldn’t hurt
I can’t believe he even put the panafricanisme flag in the movie. Ryan is a genius.
Yawovi E. I absolutely love it
Yawovi E. ✊✊✊
Black Panther is deeper than I thought
The director's cut is going to blow my mind when this comes out on DVD.
Oh my gosh, you're right, especially with Ryan's narration of his vision. This will be one DVD to purchase for sure.
I really hope Disney and Marvel let him do a Directors cut and I would love to watch a directors VO and also a VO with other cast and crew members especially costume and set design. So much love and talent went into this film.

Don't want. Start
Yep
For his thirties he accomplished a lot
He found his God given gift. This is the most animated I have seen him. This is his passion. 31 years old! Lol
If he could do this for every scene in the movie, umm... that would be great!
senaami23 Use your imagination
+senaami23 I would definitely buy the Director's Cut DVD of this if he broke down every scene as well as this. Awesome!
When they up his budget for black panther 2
I can’t wait for his next movie.
That RBG flag motif was dope
Somehow also the flag of Wakanda
+qwerttzizzi Wakanda is still a part of Africa though, so it's the countries flag. Just like Canada, all the provinces have their own provincial flag, but we still all use the Canadian flag.

This video needs to blow up ya'll. Iv'e learnt a lot through this.
Amen.

Me too! Especially with the Pan-African flag colors and the Dora chant...gave me goosebumps!
I love that for the female characters he accentuates their femininity as well as their heritage and they're both not only highlighted but presented as a strength.
dressing up like a private or public sexdoll for moids was never strength
Excellent. Master film-maker here. This scene was tense and very pleasing to the eyes...well done. Excellent film.

I hope Ryan enjoyed making action movies as much as he seems to enjoy describing it. Love the passion

My first time seeing Ryan Coogler talk about the film and its evident how his vision contributed to why I loved it so much and obviously its success.
So much detail and passion was poured into this movie. Thats why it was so powerful and inspiring.
Salman Airlangga YES definitely top 5 MCU movie all time
Wow this gave such a deeper meaning to this LEGENDARY fight scene!!!! Sooo happy that I watched this!!!
This is an incredible breakdown. Just goes to show the amount of detail and love that was poured into this project.
Black Panther is going to break records
This was the best interview I’ve seen ever. I learned so much about films with this video. I am amazed.
When you want to be a director when you grow up, videos like this really make you happy
Ryan Coogler is incredibly talented I hope marvel continues to have him direct their movies even outside of black panther
Sitting here as he's talking about "color story" and i'm amazed at the level of detail that goes into these type of things.
The way he talks faster and faster when he gets excited haha
Adding "femininity used as a weapon" to my vernacular in 3...2...1
Lol
Yeeeeeeesssss
Kinda summarises 21st century in a few words. 😏
Yesss and beauty vs. aggression 🙌🏽🙌🏽 imma need a whole 3-credit course based entirely on Black Panther and its motifs
O Williams YES! LOL The contrast of beauty vs. aggression 2020 and femininity used as a weapon 1010 course would have me in the front row!!! LMAO I love this! I love US! This movie really really gave us a lil glimpse of the fun in unity here.
WOW! it's cool to get a chance to see how a director's mind/creativity works!!!
The man is a genious
Bruno Rehder almost every film director is.
At 30 years old? With 3 successful hit movies as a novice? Yea, that's almost every film director. Give credit where credit is due or just shut up, because these are not common accomplishments at his age. Show me how many 30 year old or younger directors have done this well within this decade.
wut dat logic do? You obviously don't know many filmmakers.
Does this video have "every film director" or just Coogler? It's like telling your girlfriend she's beautiful, than turning around and telling her "every girl is beautiful". Just let the man have his moment
*genius
I can't wait to listen to the commentary for Black Panther because Ryan clearly put so many small details in everything that just went over my head, or I never thought about looking for.
As a stunt/fight person, I was expecting something different but this trip thru the director's mind was fun.
a few clowns equating a slight speech impediment & Oakland Bay era accent as lack of intelligence. (Bruh was working on his Master's degree and decided to do film and scriptwriting) others or not paying attention and don't know the difference between Okoye traditionalist. (hence no gun) vs Nakia @5:35 "is the innovator". (hence a gun)
What do you have against clowns? (j/k)
Awww he didn't cover my favorite part of that scene, when Gurira jumps down after the guy
I kept hoping he would get to that part, but every time it would stop right after she kicked him down. LOL
He would've had to say that they hid a cut there, so he stopped
Man this is what you want in special features! I hope they incorporate this for more scenes in the Blu Ray release
This shows that directors are responsible for everything that goes on in a scene. They need to get more credit for whats good and take more flak for whats bad.
Especially if the director has full production support. Sometimes directors do not have full control though.
Goes both ways but can't tell sometimes
🎶To Be Young, Gifted, and Black🎶.... l LOVE YOUR GENIUS RYAN COOGLER!!!!!!
It's amazing how the director can explain the scene piece by piece, frame by frame. That's what every director should have the ability to do. As a person who wants to direct, I can tell he's very insightful. This inspires me. Thank you! 😁
Omg this is amazing I wanna see this entire movie with his commentary
I wish he would have discussed the red ploom of her the dress as she moved like dye between the crowd. It was beautiful!!
