- Steve and Robin sift through a good amount of mail that’s been piling up. Be sure to pick up issue 297 of WoodenBoat magazine and check out the Launchings section to see Arabella's feature! With a climbing guide book for Nova Scotia and Newfoundland in hand, they can start planning their summer adventures-huge shoutout to the local folks who have provided support, advice, and overall amazing hospitality.
Back in Granby, Steve spends time supporting his mom and dismantling the last of the boathouse. While in the area, he opens more mail, including some books and lines for the reefing on the main mast.
While there’s a pocket of okay-ish weather, Steve works on getting as much work as possible completed on deck and up in the rig. He works on hoisting the sails and tying the lines, and comes up with a clever solution to install the tri-colored running light and wind reader on top of the main mast.
Of course, this pocket of weather doesn’t last too long. With Robin away and the rain returning, Steve takes this opportunity to transform the cabin into a workshop. The plan is to assemble as many electronics as possible before they make their way on deck.
Hopefully spring weather makes an appearance soon, because all of us-including Akiva-are tired of it.

Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

Steve doesn't need coffee in the morning, he has all the electronics to play with to get wired. Great episode. I can only imagine the anticipation of turning on the systems for the first time and seeing all the new data on screen, always an exciting moment.

HDPE plastic (the cutting board) is wonderful material. The only plastic you can safely melt at home in the oven. (180c or gas #3.) I save all my old milk cartons, melt them into trays on grease proof paper, allowing them to cool down slowly so as not to warp, then I cut them into strips. I make all kinds of brackets with holes drilled exactly where I want them. I no longer use wooden stakes in the garden. These are stronger and don't rot. Cutting boards are ideal for either of these.
Except that white HDPE has no UV stabilization. Black HDPE typically has 2% carbon black that adds to the environmental UV resistance .
That's true@@Myseadreams and if it was a thin sheet, that would be an issue, but how long would you estimate it would take for UV to compromise that particular slab of HDPE? Ten years? Twenty? Other plastics would go brittle far quicker, but not that one. I've done some experiments in the field, and I would estimate it will last at least twenty years if not longer. I'd expect the electronics fixed to them to become obsolete and need replaced before they do, and when they do, another chopping board will do fine. I'm sure it could have been done with a UV resistant product for £59.95 or custom made in a mould, adding carbon for UV stability. Heck! It could have been carved out of mahogany and given twelve coats of the best yacht varnish, but Steve found a cheap and effective £3.99 solution. I don't know who said it, but there's a famous saying from WWII: "An engineer is someone who can solve a problem for 25c that any fool can solve for a buck."

As a guy who has been around the world, and sailed in ships and what not for the better half of 4 years now... YOU ARE A SAILOR. May not have sailed as much, but you find the cheapest, and most round about ways to do something that would already have been easy. That is a sailors fix.,
I used some plastic (teflon) for a project and put some bolts through it. I tightened them as you did and put it away. I came back to it a week later and the bolts had loosened. I tightened them. I did that several times before I realized I was dealing with PLASTIC. It moves. It keeps moving. You might check this in a few days and find despite locking the threads they have become loose.
Steve: "you'll never know it was a cutting board on the top of the mast" on a public video. Hopefully everyone who visits the boat from now on will ask "Hey Steve, is that a cheap cutting board on top of your mast?"
I hope the chopping board plastic can handle the UV,s.

I have used the same sort of cutting board for an outside project as well. They get very brittle in the sun. I think mine lasted maybe 2 years. It was also subject to high impact.

I got a chuckle seeing you near the top of the mast with your backpack full of items to be installed there. The blade on the wind speed indicator made me think of a very small helicopter blade you might use to fly off into the horizon!😂
In my experience, white plastic cutting boards aren’t very UV resistant. Keep your eye on them.

I don't think the cutting board will last.
I have tried using them in similar applications.
They bend and crack over time.

UV might be an issue for some plastics
I've used it before and didn't last more than 6 months in the Australian sun as it breaks down from UV exposer, Ok for a temporary fix for something not a permanent installation.
Why not use a small piece of wood to mount the masthead light and wind vane? At least that would avoid any concerns about UV deterioration of the plastic
Hoping that nylon or plastic the cutting boards are made of don’t degrade or get brittle from UV. No real way to know without letting some time go by in the sun.
It's only the US that keeps eggs in the fridge (well, maybe other places do too). There are basically two ways to keep eggs fresh, but I don't think you can swap between them.
When Robin Knox-Johnston sailed round the world he waxed his eggs and they lasted the whole journey. But those were probably european-style unrefrigerated eggs.

Sharpies aren't as permanent as most think. A non-polar solvent will easily remove it. Toluene, acetone, or a concentrated alcohol work pretty well.
Hmmm, usually the activator is applied after the cyanoacrylate. By putting it in before, the adhesive might cure before it wicks into the threads. Not sue the cyanoacrylate is the best choice here. I would suggest something intended for threadlocking, like Loctite 242... I too have concerns about the use of HDPE, it will cold flow. G10 would probably be a better choice.

Steve, if you want a more even temperature inside your fridge, install a little fan to circulate the air.
even a cheap USB powered computer fan would do wonders to help

I use an old PC case fan wired to a wall wart power supply to keep an even temperate in my chest freezer that I converted to a kegerator
Have you thought about UV and the plastic cutting board? I'm not sure what plastic It's made from, but I would guess it's likely to be high density polyethylene, which has a pretty poor UV resistance. I'd suggest you check the materials property of what you're using and allow for that in the maintenance schedule.

Keep some paper templates for the mounting you did on the cutting boards. Cutting boards aren't quite UHMWPE (lower molecular weight) and all PE degrades kinda quickly in UV. Keep an eye on the fasteners even tho you locked them with CA--thermal expansion/contraction of polyethylene is stupidly high. Probably plan to replace the mounting plates with G10 or G11 plates in the future.

Or use a nice piece of rot resistant wood coated with fiberglass & epoxy.
hope you can fit all those cables with the big ends down the mast.

Paint that mount you made. Cutting board makers might not be concerned with ultraviolet resistance.

I did something similar with cutting board and you might want to replace soon with G10 as the cutting board will yellow and warp in the sun quickly

What you said. Especially one that thin. I’m a chef. Hot water will bend poly cutting boards so I would imagine the sun will do the same.
That was a very intense stare down with Akiva.
I hear ya on getting things done around the house when your on you own.
My wife will go home to see her family and I will stay home and work on the house. I get so much more down when I don’t have to clean up at the end of the day. The dog is not happy about as it cuts into her beauty rest but she gets over it.

When you are sailing along and ask your self ,” I wonder if I should put are reef in ?”. The time to put it in is somewhere between the ,”I wonder,” and the “if”. Just a tip.
If the boat was just a little bit bigger there would be room for a treadmill for Akiva, he could just have a run without getting wet. 😄
It would have been great if all the wiring was in a loom like in a car, it would be so much lighter but it would need to be custom. 🤔
Farley Mowat's little book is a super classic. I was raised on his work, by my dad, who also got me going on sailing and boats generally, and that book- that was the first one in the process. Did I mention it's a super classic?? Enjoy!

Electronics are great. However, for cruising please get a sextant and magnetic compass. Also, a pilots compass that you can see overhead from your berth.

At 1st glance I thought the radar mast mount was a new small toilet seat for use over the side 😜
Two comments. One also read Mowat's Bay of Dispair its bases around the south coast. Second be sure the AIS can be seen and heard at the helm.
Those cutting boards are going to deform over time in the heat and elements, ask me how I know.
I would've thought that lock nuts would be a be a better choice up on the mast.

What’s the advantages of ship based radar over the satellite system you also have? Thanks for showing us the products you used on your new mounting bracket. I would have liked to have seen the mast mounting effort too.
I was watching your video when you talk about stuff freezing in your freezer and all that and now you might want to check into it are you don’t have to keep eggs refrigerated if they’ve never been fridge rated the last like twice as long that gives you more space in your fridge raider
I've had eggs last 3 weeks with no reefer. That's when I ate the last one
And butter. No need to refrigerate that unless you're keeping it a really long time.
''I just want 15 knots'' reminded me of my last sailing venture in my Alberg 30, no engine. I left that lump of iron in the yard for somebody else to scavenge.
I left the Chesapeake Bay in 0-5 knots of wind, but soon encountered 35-40 knots of wind from the North. That lasted over a week. I was heading S-E, down-wind so the wind speed was ameliorated. However, the noise in the rigging was horrendous. So my mantra became just 15 knots. The music from the rigging didn't match anything I could join in with, it was just NOISE.
I use dielectric silicone on all my connectors.

What brand of line are you using for the reefing?
FYI cutting board is not UV stable and will degrade. Good short term solution.
Super Glue isn't water proof either.
HDPE plastic (the cutting board) will be fine. The only plastic you can safely melt at home in the oven. (180c or gas #3.) I save all my old milk cartons, melt them into trays on grease proof paper, allowing them to cool down slowly so as not to warp, then I cut them into strips. A more suitable product would be "King StarBoard" which is UV stabilised
You can also quickly put a couple of coats of white paint on the board to greatly increase resistance to uv, just rough it up first and chemically etch with a solvent first
You need to take him to the dog park in Brewster. It's on 6a
that vsc10 should NOT be installed up the mast, it should be down low closer to the point of lateral roll (generally somewhere near deck level center line), generally best option is to locate is on the stern. Up on the mast it's going to be subject to all the motion of the rig and provide very poor data as a result.
Is having your red and green lights on top of the mast consistent with Coast Guard requirements?
Not only that, they are also internationally approved (COLREGS).
@@petern372 It was my recollection from many years ago that the masthead light was required to be higher than the bow light or side lights. ARABELLA doesn’t have to display a masthead light while under seal only, but if she is motoring she has to display a masthead light facing forward.
@@petern372 My recollection was correct. The triple light being installed by Steve is fine as long as she is under sail only. However, a sailboat of ARABELLA's size under power must display a masthead light pointing forward and red and green sidelights. Under Coast Guard regulation, 33 C.F.R 84.02 (g): The sidelights of a power-driven vessel shall be placed at least one meter lower than the forward masthead light.
