That's a Commenga Lens M-1950 compass. You can tell because it doesn't have the stamped writing on the lid, I have one I keep in my camping gear from the time when I was an Eagle Scout. You can still buy them, they're about $100 new. They're definitely worth restoring, and if taken care of they'll last generations. Nicely done :) A neat little upgrade you can do is to replace the sight wire with a piece of optical fiber. It helps at night. I also added a mirror to the inside of the lid, it helps light it up, and it's also a flash mirror for signaling. My scoutmaster had a flat magnifying glass he kept in his to start fires with
Another standard RUclips "restoration". Formula: 1) Take an object which is in working order. 2) Leave it outside for a month or two to develop a layer of surface rust. Mud is a bonus. 3) Rip it apart so that the components can be shown arranged on a bench. 4) Sandblast the parts to ensure any carefully machined surfaces are destroyed. In this case, paint stripper was used before washing mud off, a sure sign that the original state was "staged". 5) Spend ages smoothing out the parts which show. Use filler, thick paint and powder coating to hide "imperfections". 6) Lay out the parts on the bench again. 7) Re-assemble. It doesn't matter whether the object works afterwards, because it's "only for RUclips". 8) If anyone complains about them destroying the object, claim that it is now fit to grace any art gallery in the world.
Throw that thing in an ultrasound machine and it comes out just as clean as it was before it was in the garden for 14 days. This is a brand new compass that is still sold thousands of times today. Just not for ships.🥱
@@anthonycphillips2430 doesnt have the proper tools? I think that he has the right tools, and even if he doesnt, who cares? i t doesnt matter until it turns out good or bad
This looks to be a pro-force military compass. From the screw's it is not really an antique. Should be painted black for a restoration. You can get one unused for about $10 off ebay.
Called a lenzatic compass. Soldiers still use a version of it today. Not a ships compass at all. Also not as antique as you would think. Boy scouts were known to use them as well.
That is not in any way a ships compass. It is a likely a 1980's and later magnetic land compass used by infantry forces. There was no aluminum or plastic compass packs before that. Do your research.
That is NOT a ships compass. It is an army issued hand held compass used in land map reading. A ships compass is found on the bridge of a ship just indent of the wheel
Definitely not antique or from a ship. It's an army linsetic compass from the 1990's. I have 2 of them from my time in the army. Cost about $10.00 new.
That’s not a ships compass. It’s a military or backpacker compass. I have something almost exactly similar I bought off Amazon two years ago. But great job bringing it back to life.
Suggest a warehouse to collect the things you restored and everything that works is something you add in the warehouse to see creativity and artifacts😍👏🏻
I have 2 of these in my duffle bag I used them for land nav. Not sure if other branches used them for sea but never know. But I call BS on antique when you can purchase these on eBay brand new.
you made a lovely restoration of this hand held officer's compass however the green you used on the body should be olive green but I'll assume maybe that is the only colour you could get shame that but nice job still.
La verdad no me gustó el video, pienso que algunas imperfecciones son parte del artículo, no hace falta taparlas con pintura, y al final se nota un manchón blanco donde estaba uno de los alambres que sostenía, ni siquiera lo cubrió.
This is not a ship compass. This is an ordinary lensatic land navigation compass, in use by the military for decades. One might use it while on a ship, but it is NOT an antique ship compass. Why would a ship compass have an aiming wire, when its user is gazing out across an expanse of featureless open sea? The aiming wire is for aligning the azimuth on the compass with a terrain feature, not the ocean.
Olá Iris, eu também sou fanático por restaurações e sigo vários restauradores, de países diferentes e a maioria utilizam produtos criados em suas respectivas regiões.
It’s not a ship’s compass, its a lenstatic compass used by ground forces and yes as the guy below stated you can buy them on eBay. New and cheap so why bother and get your facts right!

That is a lenstatic style Compass of very poor quality, but it's definitely not a ship's compass. The brass ring is for a lanyard to be worn around the neck.
Don't you love amateur restorers with their dainty paint brushes and fiddly tweezers. Oh and of course, big thick sloppy gloves and totally inappropriate power tools.
Not even worth calling it a military compass it's not worth more than a penny and try not to just throw stuff into a bucket of mud and call this a restoration
It is incredible that one so dead piece can comeback to life so beautifully.
Amazing restoration, I love you work

Also, came part too easily and the brass parts were too clean, no patina.
Absolut correct statement
Love that he takes time to use paint remover and stainless brush before destroying everything with aluminum oxide drum!
Woww👍👍super ❤❤❤👍👍
Lensatic or prismatic compass. Most definitely not a ships compass.
Good dirty and nice for clean I like it ...... 👍👍👍👍👍

Love those antique crosshead screws!
HAHA 😄
Looks identical to the military issued lensatic compass I carried during the time I was in the Army.
I think dilapidation is more appropriate in describing what he did to that compass. Also it is a modern military field compass, not a ship compass.
Not a ships compass. It's a linsetic compass.
i was telling my wife the exact same thing while watching this video. he does not know how to restore nor have the proper tools..
@@anthonycphillips2430 doesnt have the proper tools? I think that he has the right tools, and even if he doesnt, who cares? i t doesnt matter until it turns out good or bad

Not antique. Still produce, available everywhere.

However faked film
Maybe Wolfgang same as Hollyweird.
Very beautiful job buddy, as always like 👍
Please start to think objective
I believe it is a replica, military-style compass for commercial sale. Certainly not for boats, certainly not an antique
Great job 👍
Ship compass? Maybe for a rowboat or canoe. Seems like a typical land compass.
Maybe you should have done a Google search on what an antique ship compass really is. It was good for a laugh though.
Great special restoration 👍👍💯% Well done 👍👍
A compass is a device that everyone needs to learn to use! Great work! Like
But this neither ship compass, neither antique one. Just lost in the garden for a month.

It's also not antique
If played backwards from the end to circa the 2:00 mark, restoration becomes a more fitting description.
Looks cool well done.
Do you restore in same way...than good night
Cómo siempre excelente trabajo y ese verde le quedó muy bien. Yo tengo uno pero es todo plástico. Saludos 👋 desde Venezuela Ciudad de Maracaibo.

The point is I think to refurbish. Not to replace.
Proper term for this is a prismatic compass and I think you have carried out a very tasteful restoration.

Military compass not before 1980. Vintage compass. Possibly 1990 because it’s aluminum is in meters and has plastic instead of glass.
