- The game show "I've Got A Secret" featured the Shangri-Las (w/Robert Goulet.) at the time when "Leader of the Pack" was the number one record in the USA. Previously the panelists spoke/performed the lyrics as if they were soap opera dialog, then they had to guess where the words were from. Nobody knew. I spared you the embarrassment of not posting the whole segment.
One of the Greatest songs ever! Even as a 5 year old kid in 1980 it was one of the first songs I remember hearing. That and Joan Jett's I Love Rock and Roll. Another Great American Classic. Mary Weiss was and is Hot! She was really pretty back then with a Great singing voice. Somebody should make a Bio-Pic Movie about The Shangri-Las.
Anyone 2018? This song is legendary
Used to give me chills and I'd crank the volume like a throttle. Got the chills again!
I used to love this song when I was a little kid. By the way I'm 23. My parents raised me well.
2019...my older sister was running with the local bad boy in the neighborhood...I was 10 at the time.
2019😂.
It's 2017 and I'm 16 and still listening to this song. My grandma raised me listening to this song constantly , and still love it
I loved this when it first hit the airwaves. My little old transistor radio. Hearing this song sent goosebumps down my back as a kid. Gentle, sexy times when love was what we wanted.
OMG!!! A blast from the past, I absolutely LOVE this song.....for the past 40 years. :)
I love that he is still giggling during the line "I knew he was sad." LOL Beautiful performance.
I married the leader of the pack we were together 20 years he's passed on now and I'm 70 but wow those 20 years they were something else
Was 4 years old…. But my older sisters listened to record player & radio 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Liked all these songs. Great memories
this got so much air time back then as most guys of that era rode motor cycles and sadley a lot of them died hence the songs strong feeling of intimacy with the poor girls who lost a loved one, mind a good song too.
Bobby baby had a Jack Lemon-Bob Hope way about him...such a dynamic singer himself...
The song was recorded in September 1964. It hit #1 shortly after Thanksgiving that year.
It might have been replaced at number one by The Beatles, I Want To Hold Your Hand
I think I Wanna Hold Your Hand came out in January or February of 1964 ‐ maybe, lol.
It's great watching these classic performances!
it still moves me. 50 Years after it came out.
She was and still is amazing just wonder why they didn't last longer or make it bigger in music.
@forego49
The "British Invasion" 😢😏
Such an under-viewed song.
I heard this all the time in my mums 60's albums.
I grew up hearing endless replays of this song in 70's, even liked it as a kid, but just realised watching this I've never actually seen them before - interesting, and hilarious! :oD
Bestt girl group from the early 1960's.... B
The Shangri-Las were ahead of their time. What a great sound.
G
This is sooo cute and naive. No words to describe it. Best songs were made in sixties.
Even when Goulet is loosing it, SHE is keeping it together, being the proper entertainer. How wonderful nostalgia is, there were bad elements, but I agree with alan murr, not at a crack house, not 'texting', how innocent a time - what great sing along lyrics the 50's 60's and most of the 70's had.
Man, is there a better example of a combination of poetry and melody? It's such a beautiful song! There will never be a better one! Never!
Pity about the prick on the bike thou'.
The wall of sound by Phil Spector is so very special. The dialogues in a song is remarkable, it is still new!
Thanks Thalmaray, it is really still new what Phil Spector did with his wall of sound!
I know all the songs from my youth I loved it but now I am older i see the special beauty of what Phil Spector did!
It is also very funny . That guy on the motor! You get the picture! Look out Look out!
And then the end it turns in a tearjerker..brmmmmm!
Thanks Thalmaray!
I LOVE this song even tho it was 20 yrs old by time I was born
My nana had a cd with a bunch of songs from the sixties and this was always my favorite
I also love this!
'Betty, is that Jimmy's ring you're wearing... is he picking you up after school today?
Those twins were sweet too. Together, they were the great-sounding 'Shangri-Las'. I understand they were also good friends.
Listening in 2015!
***** Boy, that escalated quickly.
Fuck off
Me Too!
Memories of my youth, when life was wonderful ...
Classic stuff.
I love it.
George Vreeland Hill
Robert Goulet was probably the best thing about this "performance!" Thanks for posting this, VIDEOBEAT!
Love this, brings back sooooooooooooo many memories
Brings back 80's memories of the karaoke in the Social Club where I worked.
I saw these ladies on a double bill with Billy Joe Royal in about 1965 at a small National Guard Armory in a very small South Georgia town with my best girl. Great fun to look back to those much simpler times........Who knew Patti Smith would go on to fame from there???
When 🎶 was 🎶! Still listening 2020 👍 old 🏫 🎶!
when I was a little girl my sister had this record and Id listen to it over and over I was like 5 funny I still remember
I've never heard the original before now. I knew this song because of Alvin and the Chipmunks cover that I listened to on a cassette tape when I was a little kid. But now listening to other versions and seeing this I have a new appreciation for it :)
anyone else listening to this in 2014?
Nope
yep, going through my old records and ran across this one.
Of course!
Yes, love girl groups!
Oh fuck off
this is hilarious! Very funny and cute. Love the motorcycle guy's part!
Always loved this song. I was 11 when it was a hit.
Holy moley, that lead singer is absolutely stunning! What a dreamgirl!
Oh yeah they came to our little town Lindenhurst to sing at our Sock Hop! Great fun in person!
Yes that gorgeous lead singer MARY WEISS was born in December 1948 Which makes her a whole year older then me, but being younger then MARY makes me feel young.. Gawd did I fall in love with her (MARY, see her song LONG LIVE OUR LOVE here on You Tube, I left 100 comments.) Those other cute twins are no longer with us, the two lovely TWIN sisters along with Mary Weiss who made up the best looking rock group EVER, Marg, I think her name was died in 1970 died while still young and beautiful in 1970 from a disorder that caused her to have seizures and the other twin Angel came down with that awful breast cancer and died in 1994 or 1996. Mary and her sister Betty are still doing fine I hear. O'h how I wished I would have met Mary while we were both a teen-ager in the 1960's!!!!!!!
My mom used to hear this all the time when she used to get drunk back in the day, lol.
Michael Lopez LoL 😝
@@walteralvarez8230 she just passed away a few months ago. Damn I would do anything to listen to this her one more time.
Michael Lopez sorry to hear that . My condolences to your mom . May she RIP .
@@walteralvarez8230 thank you.
I'm Chris Hanson with NBC's Dateline, Why don't you take a seat?.....
Remember when the music was magic happy times with no particular place to go love the girl groups
Goodness she's beautiful. I'm almost 40 heard this my whole life crazy how when there's a face put to a voice it can be shocking
cant go wrong with a Harley !!!!! I grew up listen to all this music. trust me I might be 41 but I know my bikes!
This ranks right up there with Elvis singing to a real live Hound dog on television.
I saw this show with my Mom... Thanks for the Memories :-)
Shangt-Las sang this song with Mr. Robert Goulet as a comedy skit. Leader of the pack was the # 1 hit song in USA. It was in 1964, I know I seen the show when it aired in 1964.
Shangri-Las were the coolest, bad-ass girls. Very hot lead singer.
that is what our girls looked like in 1964, my senior year. gorgeous.
that is Robert Goulet on the bike
Love this song so much
1964 da war ich mal 6jahre aber jetzt find ich die musik von damals gut oder wie man sagt cool
I can remember those metal wheels! I still have those roller skates!
I was randomly talking to my grandmother about the death genre of music that came out back then. It started with the teenagers and then moved to older people, but a lot of the songs were banned from radio which made more people want to of course listen to it, and she started singing this song which is the exactly what I was thinking about when I was talking 🤣
the what?! so like ‘last kiss’?! 😳 omg thank you for this comment, will be researching now.
@@bebbycute oh you deff should. It's pretty wild lol
Billy Joel was the Piano Man On This Record. He was 15 at the time as was Mary Weiss the lead singer.
I love the old songs Bonnie Olson
Well that brought back memories of being a pre-teen. Loved watching it on the "Robert Goulet" show (?)
They came to MacArthur HighSchool in Levittown in 1963. They broke the heart of every young guy in the gym. Mary Weiss was stunning.
Classic song - especially if you were a young teen in the early 60's!
Great band, singers / ladies and song, also great clothes, and hairstyles; simple but nice - looks great in B & W. A shame it couldn't be done live. In a way I wish you would put up the whole segment just to see how the panelist couldn't guess the words / where they were from as per your description. Thanks for uploading this, I knew the song (heard it) but hadn't seen the girls perform it; regards.
Love 'betty's' hair.
Back then, the candy store was the place to buy pretty much anything.
This and "Last Kiss" were both songs about teenage drama and loss.
The blond is/was fucking gorgeous
+napisr
I agree, but no need to swear. Relpace fxxxing with sensationally... ; that'l do it.
KJ 104 UK unfortunately she passed away in 1970 at the age of 22. She was only 15 at the time this song hit the charts
Wow.. that's depressing to hear. It sent me to wiki for more info:
"Mary Ann Ganser began having health problems in 1968. She died in Queens
NY, on March 14, 1970, aged 22. The cause of her death has been
variously reported as encephalitis, a seizure disorder, or barbiturates.[4][14]"
Wow, that's amazing!
that thing on her head musta weighed 5 pounds!
THE classic greaser girls group!!!! Loved this song....then and now. And what a dork Robt Goulet was. The generational conflict between us rockers and the "adults' is vivid here. And this is exactly why I wouldn't have been caught dead watching this show.
The Yamaha Trailmaster had that can on top of the cylinder. About the size of a can of tennis balls. The can had chrome covers with a bolt in the middle.
Another great song for a group or artist to do a cover of!!! ( LEADER OF THE PACK) CASPER: GHOST OF MUSIC PAST!
AMEN to that. Music today has nothing on 50s-80s. Program computer, spit out track. no soul. This song is a total classic.
So cute & innocent. I wish things were still this way.
Thanks for posting. Fun video. Sad song, but always loved it.
The best part of this song was when at the end of it you hear the screeching sounds of the tires.
My History of Rock N Roll class 2 years ago told me that this song was banned in UK for its message of teen death
you are right, I remember it happening
Joshua Orro wow what the heck this song is beautiful
It's True...Teenagers died all the time in Car/ Motorcycle wreaks..still do....it's common to hear of crashes now and then at any High School in the US....Kids do Stupid Shit... I did...that Cop you Hate for stopping you might have saved your life once....
This is true... But there were a lot of "pirate" radio stations in the North Sea that broadcast songs like this and the BBC did NOT like that. BBC Radio was awful at the time... They okayed things like records by Ken Dodd (he's not bad, but REALLY) and Dean Martin, as they shut down at midnight , whereas "pirate stations" not only played more "hip" music; they also broadcast 24 hours a day.
when was the ban ?
I heard this today. took me an hour to find it.
Wooah!!! These ladies made this hit and then Twisted Sister did a cover!!! LoL I can't believe it 😂
I was in love with Mary Weiss.
+David Eckler Ditto.
+David Eckler Who wasen't
Mary was tuff.
David Eckler proor Mary then
I still am.....
Love them all
Love their hair and sound
I remember watching this on TV. What a difference from the trash nowdays that they call “ talent”
Moja ukochana piosenka z radia Luxemburg AMAZING tanks
I still say that the greatest song these girls did was LONG LIVE OUR LOVE. Mary and her two twin friends, (her H.S. friends), Mary Ann and Marge were soo sexy when I saw them on TV in about 1966 singing the only song that I liked by this group. Had I known that they were so beautiful, I would have probably liked or at least paid more attention to their previous songs. It seemed like LONG LIVE OUR LOVE was their last big song. It's on You Tube. Maybe even the TV show I watched when I first saw these 3 gorgeous girls, the sexiest rock group that I have ever seen is available on You Tube.
I met him at the roller rink! Bonnie Olson
I think Mary would have made a great actress!
Great song
Mary Weiss...The sexiest pout in rock & roll.
You're right. The Yamaha Trailmaster had that headlight and speedometer built into one unit that looks identical to the video. The rear axial mount was that way. The little luggage rack could have a pad bolted on for a passenger. Hard to tell much because of poor camera focus. Still, today Yamaha is an strong international giant. Jet-skies, ATVs, motorcycles, musical instruments. Detroit's the joke. Detroit used to be "leader of the pack." Today looks like video. I've seen pics of city.
Beehive hairstyle was classic and of cos elegant...
The best part was cut out. At the end Robert Goulet comes in on the motorcycle all bandaged up. The girls were trying to keep a straight face.
great voice
the song gets crazy after the motor cycle takes off
Honda started small in 1963. But it's a gaint today in auto and motorcycles. Honda has become strong in motorcycle Grand Prix racing, --- And now, Detroit is the big laugh. LOL
So remember my parents listening to a dick Clark album with song on it when I was a child!!! Miss those days
this is one of the greats
Kind of a timeless melody of restless youth and the roar of motorcycle engines.
Maybe we get the picture of the flip side of the American Dream.
Pat McCarthy.
Didn't need Robert Goulet clowning it up and bringing this song down, but he was a heart throb back then I suppose. The Shangri-Las would've done fine with out the extra prop. They were absolutely awesome!
Yeah i was enjoying this video until that jerkoff on the bike came out
Betty’s hairdo!! 💁♀️
I'll always be with him, the leader of the pack.
I prefer "The Leader of the Laundromat".
Had no idea Marcia Brady was one of the Shangri-Las! ; )`
Lol
***** , Mary the lead singer just let her hair grow naturally and long. Mary didn't need to do anything with her hair alltho in this song she has a little ball on top of her head, but check out Long Live Our Love on You Tube's Search engine. There you see Mary gorgeous with her hair naturally long and just hanging down. She was kind of like Jennifer Anniston, no fancy hair style was going to make her more beautiful then she naturally was.
Absolutely. My dream girl
I had the chipmunks version of this when I was a kid!!
I like how this version is the girl’s perspective, but twisted sister did a version of this song with the leader’s perspective.
Love this voice , Robert Goulet is cute!!!
