I'm Jimmy, rode a Honda 150 Dream to High School in '64. Listened to The Shangri-Las over and over. I was Jimmy, Mary wanted me but her parents didn't. It was all so hormonal. I'm almost 80 now and still feel it when I hear her sing to me. One night coming out of the drive-in, barely up to cruising speed, a yellow Cutlass came at us rounding the curve, swerving and crossing the dividing line at a high rate of speed, no time to react, it hit us head-on. I remember the sound and then nothing...came to, my knee had broken the radio on the dashboard but her head was split open and bleeding. Her head had hit the rear-view mirror on my Dad's Electra 225. I held it together, blood spurting on my T shirt. They pulled me out and I stumbled to the other car. Both the driver and his passenger hit the windshield face-first and their blood and tissue was still stuck hanging and oozing, embedded in the cracked glass. I thought they were dead but I pummeled them anyway, hoping to finish them off, swearing F Bombs. I'm still Jimmy and I was pissed.

My folks were always putting him down

They told me he was bad but I knew he was sad
That's why I fell for the leader of the pack

The tears were beginning to show
As he drove away on that rainy night,

I'll never know Look out! Look out! Look out!

He would buy her a bike and also have a child something she always wanted.... So she went away with him....The sad thing is that after 6 months he left her for another lady..... Mary Weiss, the lead singer of the 1960s pop group the Shangri-Las, whose hits included “Leader of the Pack,” died on January 19, 2024.. She was 75. The Shangri-Las, formed in the New York City borough of Queens, were made up of two pairs of sisters: Weiss and her sister Elizabeth “Betty” Weiss, along with twins Marguerite “Marge” Ganser and Mary Ann Ganser. They met in school and as teenagers began performing at school dances and teen hops.

I heard the re release in the 70's. What a voice. And to walk away from it to become a realtor??? Morrissey and the Smiths were inspired by the Shangri La's.

The Shangri-Las were a cut above most early ‘60s girl groups, a bit more aloof, a bit cooler, a shade more chic, and it was hard for teenage boys to hear this tale of a cool, renegade motorbike gang member who gets Betty against her parents’ wishes without wanting to be him. Until he died in massive accident, that is. Tragic storytelling at its succinct best.

@@SandyCheeks63564 It seems to me this song was originally written to be sung by her older sister Betty. Then they let Mary also have a go with this song and realized she could do a more convincing performance, however the time was way to short to change the lyrics so left it as it was.
