  • Short Strand Old Documentary captured in Belfast in 1975 and takes you on a journey into the thinking of people from this area at that time.
The streets without peace walls and both sides looking directly at one another is facinating and sad.
The film maker makes reference on being here many times filming pre 1975 therefore I would assume more film is somewhere. Perhaps even amoungst the many thousands of film I am currently working through.
I will of course upload anything more I have on Short strand and surrounding areas i.e. Markets etc.

This was a very powerful documentary. More evidence to prove why even in 2022 mental health issues are the legacy of the troubles on all sides . More effort is need by MLAs to treat this curse now. And all people of northern ireland and all communities can start living there lives instead being haunted and held by the past .from a son of a policeman who has been battling PTSD and depression since i was child due to the troubles. Even at the age of 44 im still effected by the past every day. I know i am not alone. There is help out there and you can get through this . God bless

They remind me of the women of Hessle Road in Hull in 1968. Lily Bilocca took on the trawler owners and won after the loss of three trawler crews. It's a class thing. Power to the Starry Plough.

@@trevorcourtney7457 that is a good comparison Trevor. Those Hull Women are exactly the same kind of tough working class women who wouldn't back down. It was the women of the Falls Road who came out en masse to break the Falls Road Curfew and the British army could do nothing. When the working class unite the ruling class quake.

The trauma the children of this time went through must now have effected their lives as adults. A child growing up in any situation thinks its normal when it really wasn't normal. The British have got q lot to anwser for. I was born in the UK in the 80s growing up I thought the Ira were bad bad People. As I get older and have read up on the history it actually makes me very angry. Just who do the British think they are the sheer audacity of Westminster. They did it in India and Pakistan palestine, Hong Kong and the opium wars. The slave trade. Its the most basic instinct to fight for your freedom if you're oppressed. One ireland, ruled by the Irish for the Irish, protestant or Catholic. Forgiveness is a good thing, but never ever forget. I really sincerely hope there is a lasting peace in Northern Ireland. I think the nationalist population will outnumber the unionists soon and then there will be a mandate for a vote of unification. I don't believe innocent people should have died on any side. I don't have a dog in this race but when I hear from the old Ira guys you can tell they was doing it for the cause, people like mad dog ardair and the uvf were just straight thugs. They just killed any Catholic they could.

You are incredibly misinformed about the whole situation, if you for one minute think that either side is better or more justified than the other then your ‘research’ isn’t very extensive! Both sides did despicable things to each other and innocent civilians!! The IRA and all the branches of them plus the UDA, UVF and all other groups are lunatic’s!! The IRA killed maimed and slaughtered and tortured, literal hundreds of people with zero connection to a unified Ireland!! Just because they could!! Feckin Englishman read a few books and think they know!! That whole country is filled with lunatics! Who give the descent innocent folks a bad name!!

no winners we all just lost & the only sense spoken was by the poor wife of trade unionist shot dead like so many on both sides for simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time. There are 2 sides to every story & that's something you'll never find in an Irish American documentary. Same tears different graves.

In 2022, the demographics flipped. RCs now outnumber Prods in the North. Not that it matters since many Catholics are comfortable with the Union now. And that lot votes.

When immigrating to Canada in 1981, I met a young Belfast guy on my flight who was heading for Boston. We touched down at Shannon duty free terminal an decided to go in to the bar for a few pints of Guinness. This guy after swilling his first pint suddenly grew horns. He statred to get very aggressive with the bar staff and when I pointed out that they were just doing their job, he turned on me. Saying he was going shoot me in the head if I didnt shut up.
Woh ! If that is what the troubles did to humans I am glad I was brought up in the industrial roughhouse of west Lanarkshire ! Where getting your head kicked in on a Saturday night was the norm.

Quite terrifying the absolute indoctrination, I’m not surprised it wasn’t shown. Whilst young people all over the world are going out enjoying themselves and going to bands and concerts and living life as only the young can and singing to the cure, or the Smiths or even Spandau Ballet these lost generation have their dreams lost forever and sing to folks that horrifically slaughtered women and children with bombing, and when they ask “don’t you wish it was normal” the poor thing says no
