Love it! I know a few people who are NOT missionaries who could use this kind of lesson... you don't have to be young and away from home to need obedience, situational awareness and respect!
I have served 2 Senior Missions, and worked with 500 young missionaries, this is a "spot on" focus and valued message. Having parents watch it with their missionary and discussing it to help the message and risk soak in is very important. Young missionaries are a wonderful addition to the church and spreading the message of the Restoration, BUT they are young and make some uninformed mistakes at times. This is a great teaching tool and should help !
With the age drop, missionaries feel even more like kids. Many of them have never been more than a night or two away from home. Makes sense that increased attention to safety is needed now. I'm not a big fan of blind obedience and rule orientation but I can see how that's pretty essential when you're dealing with a group of kids away from home.
I loved the message if the safety zone. I believe these videos should be watched by everyone. We could all apply this to our daily lives. Very applicable to each of our Heavenly Father's children.
I find this episode very interesting and helpful not just for missionaries but for everyone of us because every member is indeed a missionary. Oftentimes, our example resonates loudly and powerfully more than our preaching or sermon. Imagine the impact on missionary work throughout the world if only every full-time missionary and each member of the church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter-Day Saints are aware of these 3 basic principles and yet so vital for the safety and success and well-being of each missionary and member missionary in the entire church. I'm so grateful that the church has started this online safety program that can truly bless and protect young missionaries as they go forth to serve the Lord throughout the world. I'm always surprised when I see thumbs downs for videos like this. I think this was a great way to present important information that some may simply not be aware of, or haven't given much thought to yet.
@@Perykvaal Yeah. I think some people think fun and light sarcasm is some sort of sin and are getting mad in the comments about it. These are the same kind of people that wouldnt appreciate the apostles maijng jokes on the stand.
These young men and women dedicate two years of their lives at great sacrifice to themselves and their families. They and their families go into it believing the church values these young lives. They have their whole future ahead of them and that future should be preserved. They are tithe paying, temple attending, active members who should be valued as much as the converts they may bring. The responsibility for their safety and well being does not lie on their shoulders alone. They have no control of what areas they are sent to, what companions they are given or what help and advice their leaders give them.
I think the only rule I broke on my mission was calling outside my mission. My companion and I were sick, had diarrhea for 4 weeks. It was so bad we needed to arrange our lessons so if we had to we could use the bathroom between them we could stop somewhere and use the bathroom. We were getting so weak we were getting winded walking up hills. Anyway, we called our Mission President's wife for what seemed the 100th time about this and the Assistants answered, she was at a multi-zone, and they asked if it was an emergency and I said no, I've just been sick for 4 weeks and she answered pissed and said never ever to lie about an emergency again. So I said screw it and called the CTM doctor(the MTC doctor in Brazil) and talked to him. He was shocked we had diarrhea for so long and we could die(it is really really hot in Brazil) so he had us take Pepto-Bismol which we had, for a few days and check the color of our poop. It was a certain color so he said it wasn't anything that could be cleared up by antibiotics and he prescribed a medicine that was dirt cheap and it worked in two days. All my Mission President's wife did was tell us to get stronger and stronger antibiotics and once she prescribed a medicine that had penicillin in it, which I was allergic to, like it could kill me, and she claimed it was my fault because I didn't tell her I was allergic to it. My companion was right there and knew I always said I was allergic to penicillin but after he said he didn't back me up because you aren't supposed to argue with leaders. Besides that it is HER RESPONSIBILITY to ask if who she is giving medical advice has any life threatening allergies, which she did and to which I always responded 'yes, penicillin'. I think she just didn't know what she was telling me to take had penicillin in it. Anyway, for medical reasons I say a pharmacist, no matter what country you're in, is better advice than the Mission President's wife. And unless your Mission President or his wife are doctors it is alright to call outside of the mission to get medical advice. If there is a MTC in the country your serving just call it and talk to the doctor there. I really think medical advice shouldn't be given by Mission Presidents or their wives if they aren't doctors, there should be a doctor in every mission or a doctor over a few missions that the missionaries should call.
exodous02 I’m sorry for the dangerous experience and glad you got better. All people make mistakes, and there are legitimate exceptions to rules. I’m glad you kept the rest of them though, instead of ignoring them for selfish reasons.

Perhaps you are being taught this lesson for when a similar experience comes up in your own life. We all make mistakes. I think it is why the Lord taught there is no limit to the number of times just as he gives us time after time to repent. I am grateful for your service.
I was a zone leader and took a train by myself back to my area. Arriving well after our 10 PM return time, I opted to save money and walk home instead of taking a taxi. While I arrived fine, it felt super weird to be walking the city's streets by myself, and I kept wondering if something was going to happen to me.
I took a taxi and was out and about by myself from 11-2 at night, tending to mission office business(I was the mission financial secretary) and sick missionaries I'm the hospital. It was a weird.
I appreciate the part about respect. On my mission, Elders would sometimes do really stupid, inconsiderate or immature things in public. I was embarrassed for them and I am glad this concept was addressed.
Great addition to our missionary training videos! However, because the setup is very specific (// an ESPN sports commentary broadcast), it is uncomfortable to watch at times - the digs at each other, the sarcasm, etc, which is all very "normal" in a sports commentary episode, but quite off-putting too. It's also a very American-centric setting. I don't think the Church can go back and re-shoot all 12 episodes now, but I hope the Church is more aware of these flaws. Still, I like it and think it is definitely a step in the right direction. Kudos to the entire production team!
You are a volunteer and you have agency. Choose the right and go home. Selling a defective product is harder than it seems and potentially life-threatening.
@@Myworld-w5l missionaries die all the time while on their missions. Many of them come home so psychologically dysfunctional that they commit suicide in Utah at much higher rates then the rest of the country.
Regardless of where you are in life - you will always find others who disagree with you and tell you to do something. (This post included.) The key is recognizing if the advice you are given will bless your life or not before following it blindly. My advice is to take a step back and recognize that you will be unable to see eye to everyone in this life. This does not belittle you or anyone else you disagree with. Rather use this as an opportunity to learn to respect the differences in others and yourself. And put your faith and trust in the Lord. Spend your time drawing closer to Him than those around you if it is not uplifting. But unless there were exceptional circumstances, I certainly wouldn’t throw in the towel and give up. Good luck with being the best you can be.

Rules rule! Why the antagonism against rules? They may sometimes be inconvenient but their purpose is good. And is convenience really that much more important? I mean, if you’re on a mission, you’re full time dedicated to serving others and the Lord, so it’s not like it’s getting in the way of what you’re doing. Besides, can you really teach others to obey the commandments when you’re purposely breaking them in the form of mission rules yourself?
Precisely! Missionaries are always being watched. In addition, you will have rules to follow throughout your life. Get used to it. Deal with it. Accept it and move on.
While the purpose for this video was probably meant to protect our missionaries its principles are applicable to everyone. Which helps validate the statement that we should all be missionaries :-)

The Church is making many changes, and all until now are really inspired. The unfortunate thing is that, of course all the videos that it produces come out in English, and in many occasions they take too long to be dubbed into Spanish or other languages, I hope they do not put them with subtitles as they usually do a lot. The Church is global and if it does not want to look like an American church, it must make the effort to publish, at least in the major languages, at the same time.

Tendrían que transportar personas si ningún quien hablan español se uniera a sus clases de teatro. Y si lo hacen por todos los idiomas del mundo, cuesta mucho. I really liked the part that is showed how it makes other people feel, I never really thought about that...when I go on mission I think this will personally affect me positvily. BTW if your reading this I'm on my parents email, not mine.
So glad the end of this video stated there would be other safety situations addressed in additional videos. Interesting that those aren't available for the parents. I hope when addressing some of the other safety issues missionaries face, that they will take a more serious approach. Approaching those situations in the same manner they did this video would be incredibly insensitive.
A lot of work went into this and I recognize that. The only thing that I have against it is that the contention and sarcasm displayed in this video are not characteristics of Christ, nor did he condone such behavior. Missionaries will hopefully recognize this and not emulate, intentionally or otherwise, the actions and behavior shown here.
The example clips were excellent! Regarding situational awareness...the chief situation I'm aware of is that the Spencer character is too over-the-top to be likable. I'm inclined to reject anything he's selling. His stridency unbalances the trio.
You demonstrate a great point..those who lack an obedient spirit are not going to follow the advise presented. It is all about them. If we are not willing to be taught, we lack humility.

Next General Conference, pick your favorite adult beverage and have a drinking game. Every time OBEDIENCE or any derivative is mentioned take a swig.
I understand these videos are meant to be interesting and fun but the bickering and intense pride battles were over the top. Sarcasm became the focus instead of the real message. Even the people backstage, group insulted another character; not okay. I appreciate the intent to keep our missionaries aware and safe. I hope the dissing was missing in future episodes.
A great reminder for parents, and relatives/leaders where there are no parents, to better prepare missionaries for the field. There's always room for improvement. I hope the whole series is made available to the public to see what I might learn.
I can see the importance of pointing out what can happen in different situations and how that can help missionaries be aware.that parts good, but I’m really concerned by the undertow implied that if something bad does happen to you or you get sick on your mission it’s because you weren’t obedient or you did something bad. People get sick and accidents happen because we live in a fallen world and much of it happens despite all that we try to do. It lays guilt and shame on a person who’s already hurting. Also it will create more neglect and abuse by those over the missionaries by blaming the missionary for anything that happens on the mission to them. And some of the expectations are really unrealistic like not being distracted 24/7? Is that even humanly possible without turning into a robot? Anyways not a big fan of the approach taken and the stuff implied..they need to take out the phariseeism and it’ll be better for the missionaries and more respectful to these young ADULTS who are spending all their savings and giving two years of their lives sacrificing all they have for The Lord. Let’s give more respect to The Lords anointed.
The audience for this video seems to be your seminary president or a young individual lacking common sense. This video may have been helpful in the 90’s, but when prospective missionaries are inundated with social media, advertising and the worldly pursuits - this type of video produced by the church lacks relevance, substance and true insights for a missionary. The youth are being forced to mature faster in this age and will consider this video one that is almost condescending for its attempt at cheesy humor. Sacrificing time, worldly pursuits or other ventures to serve a mission are real life decisions and consequences. If this was the general attitude of the prospective missionary force, who would ever become an investigator?
I’m of a missionary eligible age and had no problem. It’s cheesy humor kept me engaged and taught me important principles of safety. I’d have been bored and gone in 2 mins without it.
I truly hope this is an excellently done joke. Missionaries are adults and can and should do as they please as adults. These are not minor children, and it’s sad to see them treated as such. As a missionary in Europe I ignored most “rules”, but used common sense to remain as safe as any other rational adult. I was there to teach of Christ, not to be some mindless obedience puppet.
It appears that you did it completely wrong then. I believe they wanted you to be a mindless obedience puppet. The church still treats adults like little children with the hoops that they are expected to jump through.

And honestly the amount of responsibility many people have I can hardly compare rules and guidance to being treated like children and hoping they jump throw hoops.
@Rodney James McGuire have you dealt with 18 -20 year olds? we may be adults but we can get pretty wild and stupid(we can be straight up ignorant sometimes), so doing something big like serving a mission, we need this kind of guidance. We are very much inexperienced as well in life, and if we want to serve to the best of our ability we need to have rules and guidance. Like if you work at a food prep store you are going to have to follow the food code so that you and your costumers stay safe. And they aren't treating us like kids by telling us the rules we are agreeing to follow. They are helping us be more accountable. (as we are following through with what we agreed to do.)

While the purpose for this video was probably meant to protect our missionaries its principles are applicable to everyone. Which helps validate the statement that we should all be missionaries :-)

The church always produces quality stuff - so this one seems out of place. The “I’m right” bantering between the two males is juvenile . This should have been 5 minutes even with some fun humor.
It's a spoof on ESPN's SportsCenter, something that lots of these kids watch all the time.. I think they nailed their demo perfectly.
It's just a way to present dry material to missionaries who have a lot of dry material to review.

La Iglesia está haciendo muchos cambios, y todos hasta ahora son realmente inspirados. Lo lamentable es que,por supuesto todos los videos que produce salen en Inglés, y en muchas ocasiones tardan demasiado en ser doblados al Español u otros idiomas,espero que no los pongan con subtítulos como suelen hacer mucho. La Iglesia es global y si no quiere verse como una iglesia americana, debe hacer el esfuerzo de publicar, al menos en los mayores idiomas, al mismo tiempo.
The Church is making many changes, and all until now are really inspired. The unfortunate thing is that, of course all the videos that it produces come out in English, and in many occasions they take too long to be dubbed into Spanish or other languages, I hope they do not put them with subtitles as they usually do a lot. The Church is global and if it does not want to look like an American church, it must make the effort to publish, at least in the major languages, at the same time.
Creo que la mayoria de los actores en estos videos son de Brigham Young University en Salt Lake City donde creo que la mayoria solo hablan Ingles.
Tendrían que transportar personas si ningún quien hablan español se uniera a sus clases de teatro. Y si lo hacen por todos los idiomas del mundo, cuesta mucho. Pero, creo es bueno que hay personas que piden que lo hacen en Espanol, porque si ay bastante demanda, entonces lo haran eventualmente.

So glad the end of this video stated there would be other safety situations addressed in additional videos. Interesting that those aren't available for the parents. I hope when addressing some of the other safety issues missionaries face, that they will take a more serious approach. Approaching those situations in the same manner they did this video would be incredibly insensitive.
A lot of work went into this and I recognize that. The only thing that I have against it is that the contention and sarcasm displayed in this video are not characteristics of Christ, nor did he condone such behavior. Missionaries will hopefully recognize this and not emulate, intentionally or otherwise, the actions and behavior shown here.

Regarding situational awareness...the chief situation I'm aware of is that the Spencer character is too over-the-top to be likable. I'm inclined to reject anything he's selling. His stridency unbalances the trio.
How about not sending missionaries into country where missionary work has been outlawed?

You demonstrate a great point..those who lack an obedient spirit are not going to follow the advise presented. It is all about them. If we are not willing to be taught, we lack humility.

Once you realize that obedience is the primary motivating factor for the leadership. It all starts to make sense.
I think situational awareness and respect are the primary motivating factors in leadership.
@@kekahardr unless you count how many times each was emphasized in this video. Obedience was said 41 times. S/A 30 times, and Respect a mere 17 times. Next General Conference, pick your favorite adult beverage and have a drinking game. Every time OBEDIENCE or any derivative is mentioned take a swig.
I understand these videos are meant to be interesting and fun but the bickering and intense pride battles were over the top. Sarcasm became the focus instead of the real message. Even the people backstage, group insulted another character; not okay. I appreciate the intent to keep our missionaries aware and safe. I hope the dissing was missing in future episodes.

A great reminder for parents, and relatives/leaders where there are no parents, to better prepare missionaries for the field. There's always room for improvement. I hope the whole series is made available to the public to see what I might learn.

I can see the importance of pointing out what can happen in different situations and how that can help missionaries be aware.that parts good, but I’m really concerned by the undertow implied that if something bad does happen to you or you get sick on your mission it’s because you weren’t obedient or you did something bad. People get sick and accidents happen because we live in a fallen world and much of it happens despite all that we try to do. It lays guilt and shame on a person who’s already hurting. Also it will create more neglect and abuse by those over the missionaries by blaming the missionary for anything that happens on the mission to them. And some of the expectations are really unrealistic like not being distracted 24/7? Is that even humanly possible without turning into a robot? Anyways not a big fan of the approach taken and the stuff implied..they need to take out the phariseeism and it’ll be better for the missionaries and more respectful to these young ADULTS who are spending all their savings and giving two years of their lives sacrificing all they have for The Lord. Let’s give more respect to The Lords anointed.
The audience for this video seems to be your seminary president or a young individual lacking common sense. This video may have been helpful in the 90’s, but when prospective missionaries are inundated with social media, advertising and the worldly pursuits - this type of video produced by the church lacks relevance, substance and true insights for a missionary. The youth are being forced to mature faster in this age and will consider this video one that is almost condescending for its attempt at cheesy humor. Sacrificing time, worldly pursuits or other ventures to serve a mission are real life decisions and consequences. If this was the general attitude of the prospective missionary force, who would ever become an investigator?
I’m of a missionary eligible age and had no problem. It’s cheesy humor kept me engaged and taught me important principles of safety. I’d have been bored and gone in 2 mins without it.

Missionaries are adults and can and should do as they please as adults. These are not minor children, and it’s sad to see them treated as such.
As a missionary in Europe I ignored most “rules”, but used common sense to remain as safe as any other rational adult.
I was there to teach of Christ, not to be some mindless obedience puppet.
It appears that you did it completely wrong then. I believe they wanted you to be a mindless obedience puppet. The church still treats adults like little children with the hoops that they are expected to jump through.

And honestly the amount of responsibility many people have I can hardly compare rules and guidance to being treated like children and hoping they jump throw hoops.

have you dealt with 18 -20 year olds? we may be adults but we can get pretty wild and stupid(we can be straight up ignorant sometimes), so doing something big like serving a mission, we need this kind of guidance. We are very much inexperienced as well in life, and if we want to serve to the best of our ability we need to have rules and guidance. Like if you work at a food prep store you are going to have to follow the food code so that you and your costumers stay safe.
And they aren't treating us like kids by telling us the rules we are agreeing to follow. They are helping us be more accountable. (as we are following through with what we agreed to do.)
