I'd love to see a jazz band with a french horn, euphonium, oboe, bassoon, and cello. It should be possible to get great sounding jazz out of any instrument.
@@heiro9611 One thing that's common with jazz instruments is expression like being able to bend notes and vary tone color, so instruments that can't do that well have a tougher time in jazz, but it doesn't mean they can't play good jazz.
@@camthesaxman3387 well the problem with jazz on horn is improvising. As a horn player I can say that improvising jazz is probably one of the hardest things to do musically on horn. Because you would have to hear every note in your head, you can’t just plop a finger down and hope for the best. You have to hear every pitch basically, and that’s really hard. Especially when your improvising and you don’t have music
I've listened to this for so many times when I was 12-13, it's when I started learning the Trumpet, and I almost switch to the horn because of your music. I remember thinking about playing music like this and that's the life I want to live. Now I started to re-approach Jazz as a Bass player, and make arrangements for my band, and I came back to this channel. So much nostalgia, damn, I listened to this so many times I can sing along to your solo in this video today, the memory is still there. Thank you for influencing me.
Thanks you very much for for your message,I'm very touched and really happy to read this feedback . Thanks you Freddie,if you like visit my website www.giovannihoffer.com for my latest recordings.
You made a good bad choice not switching it’s hard to remember how what it actually sounds like and the high notes are what i would say as to be like trying to scream smoothly with your mouth at the size of being able to not fit a needle in the mouth
This is really relatable because I've just discovered this video 14 years after the making, around roughly the same age as you, and I play trumpet and baritone, I wouldve never imagined French horn jazz to be such a beautiful smooth tone, the feeling the song gives me makes me wanna dance, and I dont dance, excellent work 👍
I was in jazz band in high school and played French horn. I improvised quite a few times at concerts. When the director would introduce my solo, he'd always say "And now, our JAZZY HORN!" Good times.
I've played trumpet for a while and I thought "how hard could french horn be? I already play trumpet". Hah! I have tremendous respect for anyone who can play this extremely tough instrument. Awesome video/song.
I used to play the french horn in a middle school brass band. I used to say to my members why there is no jazz horn and started searching any jazz horn videos hoping if I could find and your video popped up. Even that's the story of 10 years ago I still come and watch your video. Your music is still a big inspiration to me!
Alfred Publishing has three series that include horn books: Gershwin by Special Arrangement, Movie Songs by Special Arrangement, and Broadway by Special Arrangement, all arranged by Carl Strommen. Each comes with a CD with full performance plus a track with live rhythm section accompaniment. There are 11 titles in each book. The jazz section in each song has chord symbols and a written out improvisation. They are great fun just to play or use in recital/concert. There is also a piano accomp.
I had no idea french horn could sound that well playing a jazz piece. This was quite shocking actually. It was really good. The sound is so beautiful. It kinda sounded like a trombone and and a trumpet fused together. Brilliant!
Watching this video in high school back in 2011 inspired me to be a musician! I learned so much from one video and just from being curious! I learned that the horn could solo and sound this good. I learned what a fender Rhodes was. I learned form. Thank you for the music!
This is some awesome stuff. I have really been having fun playing jazz horn recently and it's great to have such inspiration from watching these performances!
A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!! This year was my first year playing the French horn and I know how difficult this instrument is. partials and notes, basically muscle memory in you chops. I love playing melodies and counter melodies on horn! when you nail something so beautiful the amazing feeling and goose bumps you get are the best!!
Please make more music like this! The French Horn is usually associated with orchestra- it's nice to see it used in another genre. Stay jazzy, playa'. ;)
This is really brilliant! I just brought my first French Horn today, and I'm just looking towards this video for a bit of inspiration to get an idea of how a professional would play it! I love bossanova, and both trombone and french horn are perfect for the genre(as well as any other instrument is besides the guitar(violao))!
@giohoffer I guess what he's trying to say is that it sounds like the improvised section of the piece sound heavily rehearsed then being what happens at the spur of the moment. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you aren't, but maybe that's what he thinks... It's definitely a breath of fresh air for what i've been listening to and trying to program into my brain to progress musically and improvisation as well. Keep it up!
now thats impressive, not many people can improvise in french horn.. i play the cello but have had a horn for a few months, and i know how often you think of a note and hit the wrong harmonic, so playing by ear gets difficult. Not many people do it on cello too, and thats my objective, to play jazz on cello one day. right now im working on technique and some classical repertoire but as soon as my ear and technique lets, im dropping it for jazz! oboists and bassoonists should improvise more too!
Love it! And wh cares if an instrumentalist uses notes for a solo? There are tons of talented artists that memorize licks and solos off a written solo. I doubt that's what Mr. Hoffer is doing, but still. To each their own. Awesome job. The rest of the combo is exceptional as wel!
nice, today is the first time i've really heard jazz french horn stuff. i want one so bad but i specialize in woodwinds.....the flute is my most known instrument. this is cool foreal.
Yo this song slaps. I was wondering if anyone here know if there a website I could buy the partition for this piece because I really wanna try to play this piece with my mates.
i would like to know what kind of mouthpiece that is too. as a french horn player i've only seen it one other time and never figured out what the brand was. i like to the horn be so versitile
@thekamikazestudios French Horns are NOT crappy sounding! every instrument has its own unique sound I for one think french horns have a very beautiful soft sound.
I love French horn featured as a French horn and not a fancy tuba. This is beautiful.
Honestly Horn can be great for Jazz, I don’t know why it isn’t used more often. Especially for a sweet mello solo like this.
it’s rlly hard and complicated
I'd love to see a jazz band with a french horn, euphonium, oboe, bassoon, and cello. It should be possible to get great sounding jazz out of any instrument.
@@camthesaxman3387 perhaps but jazz is really hard regardless of instrument. And depending on the instrument it could be very difficult

you can find jazz soloists in nearly every instrument nowadays, even harp. I wonder why there are so few french horn players playing up front in jazz?
@@joeurbreviewandcopyvidsProbably because horn is really hard to play
I played French horn in middle and high school. I really wanted to be able to play with the jazz band.
I enjoy hearing the French horn in jazz music. Its extremely soothing and smooth.
I want to play jazz on my horn!

I love how the drummer changes the feel at 0:52. Much love, well played ❤
You play drums?
Jazz horn is underappreciated tbh
The lady in the adience is my wife...and this song is devoted to her...I don't know if she really loves it...ah ah
Very nice. We need more of this timbre in jazz. French horn and mellophone.
Such a mellow sound. It will fit nicely in cool jazz and bossa Nova.
Wonderful music. I love horns in general.
2:00 the woman in the top right corner. Damn she likes the show! i really appreciate. i didnt think french horn and jazz could that good of a mix.

オシャレすぎるサウンド!いつ聞いても最高
Jesus christ... French horn really is the quiet step child of the brass family.
This one of the most beautiful performances I've ever played a French horn

I always thought the French Horn sound was a bit too understated, but it sounds perfect for Jazz.
Absolutely lovely!

I'm sorry,but I don't use written notes...I read the chords.

This is excellent!
i must agree.
That looks like a trumpet mouthpiece.
Great piece!
I do love FH
It's probably not completely necessary... But the gold plating and extra mass gives the horn a unique tone that is well suited to the jazz setting.
Wow
I play the double horn and this is inspiring 😁
I love this!

love the tone...
His tone comes from is excessive use of th Bb side of the horn, which has a much more mellow tone than the F side, not stopping or muting.
