  • Last year Tom Daley recorded a message that was broadcast on Christmas Day on Channel 4. It highlighted some themes that would dominate the year - talking about homophobia in sport and questioning why there were no out gay professional footballers in England. At the end of the message, he said that his wish for 2022 was for one, impossibly brave footballer to step forward and say “I am gay”. Fast forward a year and Tom got his wish….
    This short film hears from Jake Daniels - the only out gay player playing professionally in England. We hear about his decision to reveal his sexuality - the pressures he faced and how watching Tom’s message helped him to take the brave step. We see Tom and Jake meeting up - two of the only out gay sportsmen in the country having a discussion about homophobia in sports - as well as their past, their present and the future for gay players.

      @@deflorare25 unpopular opinion but I do think that over-the-top flamboyant gay guys who are very feminine, even more so than women themselves, contribute to the stigma. I'm not accusing them all but some of them are "in your face" all the time sometimes playing a persona "bitch this, bitch that". Being gay and feminine doesn't mean you should forget about "etiquette" depending on where you are. No need to force their "lifestyle" down people's throats all the time. Because of such behaviour, there's still lots of people who think that being gay equates being feminine and the caricature of a woman. I'm all for pointing fingers to people who are homophobic but we should not deny that some of the LGBT community keeps the stigma alive. I'm gay myself by the way before I get accused of this and that and to me, being gay just means I'm attracted to males, not that I can get away with talking louder than others nor that it should define everything else in my life. I do feel that some of us take it way too far and do more harm than not in the process of LGBT people being accepted.

    Gotta say it's wonderful to see this generation allowed to express themselves and live their life, as they choose... as a 58 year old guy that was disowned by my family at 18, (when I told them I was gay and I wanted to live with my 'friend' while going to university) when they told me they could not support that kind of lifestyle. They then cut me off financially and refused to pay for university, and because they made too much money, I was not eligible for a student loan. I was penniless and had to learn to fend for myself quickly... I got a job selling shoes, then managing a shoe store, then I became a window display designer and I have been a fashion designer for the past 30 years, (I have not spoken to my family in 40 years.) Something that I think is worth mentioning about the time that I grew up, compared with today, is back then there was the strict religious need to conform and believe homosexuality was evil... today nobody goes to church anymore, (except for a wedding or a funeral,) so the pressure to conform is not the same. Then there is the new free social media aspect, that did not exist back then, that has educated and exposed so many people to homosexuality... without the relentless evil scare mongering, and it has erased the ridiculous stereotype that all gay men run around in dresses, when you are not looking. Cheers to those brave, honest guys that choose to be real and live their bliss, while inspiring others that are struggling to find their way.

Growing up loving tennis (& other sports) and being gay was so difficult for me as I did not have anyone to look up to or be inspired by. We will NEVER have equality until things that a person has no control over, like gender, sexuality and race, are things that nobody gives a toss about. @@adamlee3333 It was a joke....point was being free in mind - at last - can make him free to play better - remove those atomic elements of doubt etc...spirit matters. I'd pay for freedom; wages not an issue...and I paid for years. Not talking of Ronaldo here - bless im!

    He’s one of the most masculine gay guys I’ve ever seen

    • @datboiisforreal
      @datboiisforreal Год назад +1

      Well that's because media has portrayed gay men as feminine to demasculate them and to make fun of being gay. Also more openly gay people are the ones who can't hide who they are and they happen to be more feminine. Also because of the society we were born, people are more comfortable with a man being gay if they behave more like a woman, since it's normal for women to like men, not normal and manly men to like men. Most gay guys are just like this guy here and are all around you, they just don't feel comfortable around you and others to say they like men and because they behave like your "average guy" no one suspects them to be anything other than "normal", so they just keep quiet and express their sexuality when no one sees them. You definitely have had plenty of gay friends or family members or work friends etc. who were gay, but who were too afraid to be open about their sexuality. They said the right things and pretended to be interested in girls (some even date/marry women), but were just lying so that no one thinks they are gay. Pretty sad when you think about it.

      Most gay men I know including myself are very masculine, it's a spectrum like most things.

      That’s coz the masculine ones don’t feel the need to constantly yap on about it, the camp gay ones are so obvious you can tell straight away. There’s lots of masculine ones

    Love Tom’s comment about how guys who are fans are out singing their songs with their arms around each other, it is unfortunate that for guys being friends and showing platonic affection is automatically shifted into being seem as gay or the sign of an implied sexual attraction. I think that if we could overcome that bias that it would remove a lots of stigma and guys would not feel so isolated. That you Jake for your bravery and for opening the door a little wider, perhaps down the road a guy is going to come forward and say you inspired him to stay in football despite being gay when he was thinking he was the only one.

    A wonderful interview, and a very brave individual in a sport that is somewhat hiding under a blanket when it comes to dealing with homosexuality. Hopefully, Jack Daniels' public "coming out" will help a younger generation do the same. I don't hold out much hope for the current football players who are locked in their closets and/or their prejudices.

    So glad you’re having a broadly positive experience and are leading by example.
    The reality is that anyone with half a brain shouldn’t give a damn about your sexuality - it’s no more interesting than your favourite flavour of ice cream.
    It’s you, love is love and honestly… big deal.
    I’m not into football but as a gay guy I know how ignorant and homophobic the sport can be.
    So thanks for being brave - we’re proud and grateful to you for just… being you! X

    Been through the same shit, came out to my parents at age 14. My father said he knew, my mother got silent with me for two months, never reponded at all to me. I was just a living ghost in that house according to her. She went out of her way to destroy my gay marriage and my lesbian sister tried to destroy my life, I have forgiven her, but I don't give a shit about her or her children. To think that strangers will inhered my wordly stuff and money is heart breaking.

    Nice one Jake! I’m also into football as an analyst. Apart from that I work in Schools as a Supply teacher and when there’s a gay banter in the classroom I remind the learners about their British values (many students learn about inclusion through BVs)…which shuts the banter up and we all settle down to the Spanish lesson.
