I’m actually surprised to see how much Tom Daley has matured and evolved watching this interview. Him and Dustin Lance Black are another gay couple who I aspire to be. If you think that the progress made in the UK doesn't mean there is no Homophobia, yer living in cloud cuckoo land. There are PLENTY of people, groups and 'organisations' that think it, feel it but do not express it, because they do not want to feel the full weight of the law being applied to them. Also, it's an irony that if the law (marriage, employment, healthcare, etc) were applied completely objectivily, homosexuality (as a sociatal differentiator) would be invisible, nothing special. But we don't live in an objective world, and the baggage of culture, history, religion and politics means we can't be anything other than vigilant, and must challenge at every turn discrimination, hypochrisy, bigotry and shine a light into those dark corners where it resides.

The reason being that any group who disagree with another nations policies would demand the same thing. I'm not disagreeing with Tom's views about nations views on anti lgbtq laws but this is not a " South africa" anti apartheid moment given that was one nation and much easier to pressurise because of it. The UK has had a negative influence in many ways on other countries, but that was a long time ago. These countries have the freedom to move away from homophobia (like the UK has done) and the UK can't be blamed if they choose not to.

Tom, instead of just blaming colonialism from the UK, let's look at how those values came about. They are values from Judaism, Christianity and Islam...exported religions from the middle east to Europe and to Britain by the Romans who colonised Britain for 400 years as well as much of the rest of europe. Another route was also the Ottoman and arab incursion across Africa and europe into the Iberian peninsula. From there, further colonisation in later periods spread these ideas through christianity and Islam further west and east and through other empires too...like the Persian and Mughal empires down into the Indian subcontinent and into China. The Mughal empire and Sharia predate Christian colonisation in the Indian sub continent and far east to China.
I think Tom's analysis and understanding is superficial and naive. I'm sympathetic to his cause to stop the persecution of people who are gay and accord people the same human rights internationally, but unless he understands what underpins those values and for how long and whence they come, then he will not be able to make any headway.
As far as any country that was a colony is concerned, if the UK can change its position then so can they based on their own social values on an independent and autonomous state.

I have a huge amount of respect for Tom Daley. May I highlight that there will always be a temptation to adopt reductionist reasoning when considering issues through a Commonwealth lens - any good or bad attributes of the Commonwealth therefore could be fairly or unfairly attributed to Britain. Expand to a global lens now and throughout history and you may come to a different conclusion than the anti British sentiment articulated in the documentary. To conflate the issues of LGBTQ rights and colonialism risks detracting from the ‘just cause’ he seeks to support. I wish Tom Daley all the best in his endeavours but would urge him not to denigrate his nation - a nation that, by admission in the documentary, acts as a refuge and a beacon of hope for the community that he represents. That is something we should all surely be grateful for, and proud to be a part of.
