20 years auto electrical experience here. You don't need to run a ground from front to back. Especially not a tiny 8 gauge. Better would be to run a proper 4 GA from the alternator to the frame or other beefy grounding point in the engine bay. I also would ground the battery in the back to the frame. Make sure all grounding surfaces are clean metal, no paint, no rust. That's a beautiful paint job in the trunk, but paint isn't a conductor. I wouldn't rely on just the bolt threads to make good contact, either, especially a crappy spare tire bolt. If you drill and tap a bolt through the body and into the frame, that would work. When you say that you are trusting the body of the car to be continuous, nothing has better continuity than a single piece car frame. The frame is probably equivalent to a double 0 ground wire. But you don't have your battery grounded to the frame. You have it grounded to the chassis at best and nothing at worst. Also, ground and power have to be the same size. Otherwise one is wasted. If you use an 8 gauge ground, then the total capacity is only what the 8 gauge will provide, and the bigger 4ga is "wasted".
God thank you for saying this. I felt soooo crazy watching him run that wire. He is so smart with so many things, but this was absolutely not the move. Double 0 gauge less than 3 feet from batt negative, engine to chassis, alternator to chassis is ideal. Wow my brain did a back flip when he ran a skinny ass 4 gauge the length of the car and expected it to have a good ground. Wow. Just wow.
**Devin notice Pistons left ear, I’ve owned multiple AKC, UKC, and ICCF registered corso’s, they need tons of excercise and training, and his ear rewrap it so that it heals correctly and stands up like his other ear, if u don’t it’ll be fine he’ll just have a floppy ear, oh and SOCIALIZE your dog while he’s young it’ll help big time
Have you ever thought about going to Japan and checking out some evo or subi to bring back or even stockpile up some hard to find parts.I’m sure you would be drooling once you set your eyes on the selection of stuff.great video as always.piston is a good looking pup .just keep on doing your thing.be safe and take care of your health and Bobbi.😎😎😎👍👍👍
I have an FK8 Civic Type R. My dog likes to curl up on one of the back seats. The way it’s designed it kind of hugs her in there and makes her feel safe. Might be worth a try with your new buddy 😊
The seats have grown on me. The shots today while replacing the door switch showed just how well they match the SSL door panels. Hope you get the voltage situation figured out! I’ve had several alternators go out with bad voltage regulators. You can check while engine is running with a multimeter if there is AC voltage (not DC) from positive on battery to ground. If more than 50mV or .1v are found you need to replace it.
Get a DC power works alternator, I have one on my STI and have never had any issues since installing it 2 years ago. I got the 180amp option and never see it hit below 14v, highly recommend checking them out
that paint needs to be back to bare metal for the ground wire to be good. and also a ground from the chassis frame rail to the engine block. all your grounds need to on bare metal.
Devin, I'm all the way from Saint Lucia in the Caribbean. love you channel man. i noticed your rpm would dip way low sometimes the engine doesn't seem to idling steadily, that can also affect the voltage readings. that gauged wiring is too small bro
You should always run the same size or larger for the ground, think of a McDonald's straw for positive and your ground is a coffee stir stick you have a ton leaving the battery and a little goin back, with resistance increased so does the heat
In my experience having a grounding issues I burnt through three autozone alternators before I found the grounding issue. Found the grounding issue replaced the alternator AGAIN and it finally fixed it after finding the grounding issue, and my battery light would flicker too.
Reach out to Whatcom Electric here in Bellingham. Send them the old alternator and have them rewind it. They will make it stronger than stock. Worth the price too. Especially with older cars. If you need more voltage for racing and such they can build it up(within case size) for what ya need. Better then 3rd party. Oem level products and better.
Had the same battery light on my Evox. It was the harness line that plugs in behind the driver headlight. (Main engine harness). One of the wires ripped.
I know you have not had the best of luck with 3rd party things but JS Alternators are really good upgrade, just dont go too crazy, even tho are more designed for big sound systems
I run one on my mkiv supra. Destroyed the insides reving it to 8600rpm. I called JS and they told me to send it in after warranty and was honest about what happened. The repaired mine a new regulator, bearings, rectifier and installed a new size pulley for free to keep the alternator rpms in spec even though I told them I would pay. A great company and great customer service.
You need to know what the alternator is rated for. At idol it’s not gunna put out the right voltage. Holding it at 1500rpm the voltage should be stable which means the alternator is working correctly.
I deal with this same issue on my turbo civic. Tried different alternators, reworked the grounds (haven't messed with power wires yet) and nothing has seemed to help :( good luck to you
Ummm the surging idle seems to effect the battery light is you notice when it’s bouncing around, idle drops then battery light comes on..vacuum leak maybe?
Should be running 0 power and ground front to back. Start had the highest draw and the longer the run the bigger the wire needs to be to carry the amperage properly. Where in WA state are you?? I might be down for a field trip to teach ya some wiring things. Or hell help ya with stuff.
Yo devin I'm from Aruba the island you'll visit someday.. can you please build an altezza rs200 it would help me and our island a lot "bcuz we have lots of em". Love your content man.
How would you compare the experience of driving an evo 8/9 to a fk8 type R? Evo has always been my dream car but I own the fk8 since its newer and ideal for reliability given the age of the vehicle
What's the poor pupper gonna do during ripskies when he's too big to hide under the dash😂 will he still get passenger privileges or become backseat only???
@Joeyhill-wj6js sti is shit had that trash bag ass car junked that bitch. Evo are gone in the wind sti are also on the chopping block with subaru. Yall better start paying attention to the honda build he gots lmao

Also great point about he painted surface needing to be wire brushed down to metal(probably was the problem the whole time)
he ran 4g tho...

That blue interior with the grey is so fire bro!💯

I am so happy you got a dog bro! He is the perfect addition to the channel! 😀

You should get a seat belt clip that connects to pistons harness or collar to keep your puppy safe
Interior looks amazing

The Sti turned up sick. Man I love your builds all the way from South Africa 🇿🇦
Im normally not a fan of yellow but this Evo has made me a fan. Holy 🔥
I love this evo. Everything is awesome can’t wait for the tune!!
Piston’s little slip forward in the seat had me laughing haha dog seems cool af.
I’ve been running an oreillys alternator for 3 years. The first one they gave me was junk and the swapped one has been solid
Next time get it tested before you buy it, hate installing it and finding out it’s faulty out the box.
that paint needs to be back to bare metal for the ground wire to be good. and also a ground from the chassis frame rail to the engine block. all your grounds need to on bare metal.
The drive with Piston was super cute. 😆
This is the second build where there’s been battery/voltage issue. The evo and the type r and both have relocated trunk batteries.
Car came out so good and love the calipers too
Devin and his dog in the EVO is like Mad Max "The Road Warrior"
Those coilover threads need some anti-sieze so it doesn't "rust" weld itself in the future. Better than grease at keeping out water as well.
Mitsubishi dealership discounted evo 8 oem alternator 10yrs ago and recommended to buy aftermarket alternator or get it rebuild 💯👍🏽
Love your dog and this video is so funny with Piston’s goofiness
Devin, I'm all the way from Saint Lucia in the Caribbean. love you channel man. i noticed your rpm would dip way low sometimes the engine doesn't seem to idling steadily, that can also affect the voltage readings. that gauged wiring is too small bro
You’re ready for a human bub Devin 💪🏽
You should always run the same size or larger for the ground, think of a McDonald's straw for positive and your ground is a coffee stir stick you have a ton leaving the battery and a little goin back, with resistance increased so does the heat
I love the cerakote trimcoat you got me started on using it like 2 or 3 years ago man
In my experience having a grounding issues I burnt through three autozone alternators before I found the grounding issue. Found the grounding issue replaced the alternator AGAIN and it finally fixed it after finding the grounding issue, and my battery light would flicker too.
Don't forget the AC!

Is that the one that Smeedia have used on some Subaru’s?

I think it may be the voltage regulator because the variation is great and it should remain at about 13.8v hot
Stm has a aftermarket alternator that I've used and haven't had any issues.
Check the tension of the alternate belt and the wiring of the alternater
Great builds Devin! but your workplace need a proper workbench, how can u work on the ground, think about your back!
You need to know what the alternator is rated for. At idol it’s not gunna put out the right voltage. Holding it at 1500rpm the voltage should be stable which means the alternator is working correctly.
U can ground the engine to the engine bay and that should fix it. But u did a nice clean setup
I deal with this same issue on my turbo civic. Tried different alternators, reworked the grounds (haven't messed with power wires yet) and nothing has seemed to help :( good luck to you
Looks great, but the hood gap drives me crazy.
fr thought ws the only 1
Entire car needs going through and all earths cleaned and checked.
Plus add some more in good gauge cable to the block from chassis
Thank you doctor tune❤
Bro piston cool as hell!
Ummm the surging idle seems to effect the battery light is you notice when it’s bouncing around, idle drops then battery light comes on..vacuum leak maybe?
wow, your head so shiny ✨️
The Voltage regulator in the alternator is bad, I think. I don't know if they still sell those separate. They are easy to change.
Great information!
Bad ground I would run one directly to alternator body and just get with a shop that rewinds starters and alternators to rebuild the one you have
Skyline will be the next project 😊
Beautiful evo never drove or Been in one 😢
I love the Evo content 🔥🔥🔥
Maybe the idle is too low for the alternator?
Thanks for the car buddy its ive had to move to the uk ill inbox my new adddres 😅

You should add the yelllow background in the cluster like the one from the blue evo!!!
How would you compare the experience of driving an evo 8/9 to a fk8 type R? Evo has always been my dream car but I own the fk8 since its newer and ideal for reliability given the age of the vehicle
Ever wanna just take out the Haltech? Oem ecu can handle that build no?
Should add your discount code for JD Customs to your vids :D
Please do an RB26! There’s a maaaaaasive audience for it. Please and thanks.
What happened to the evo 4?
How many grounds do you have coming off the engine/trans?
Maybe the old wheel chair battery messed up the alternator ...
I’m with @Neeffyyy we need a 8th gen civic si build. AWD k frank. Go!
Only three items to fix new alternator and tint and tune 🎶
Dev bout time you start the evo 1V or the Supra..
What's the poor pupper gonna do during ripskies when he's too big to hide under the dash😂 will he still get passenger privileges or become backseat only???
19:27 as far as i know 03 and 04 have them i have an 04 ssl have yet to see an 05
I had a bad rectifier and it was causing my abs light to go on and off like that.
Y don't u like putting fender liners???
Where is the varis evo x
What brand 4 gauge ground wire did you use? or recommend?
Anything OFC. Which is oxygen free. Don't run CCA. Copper clad.
Just change the voltage regulator yourself., it's easy.
Почему не провести заземление через салон в моторный отсек?
Factory five 818. Subaru in a Factory five body. Its should be easy for you.
ground has to be connected with bare metal surface
So... when are you gonna talk about the yellow lambo?
The blue evo dashboard is so nice. There is even yellow bits on it. It would make more sense to use it on the yellow evo
yeah
Have your laptop in front of you and wiggle all of your wiring harness to see if one of them is losing contact
Subaru ez30 build
Build the Supra!!!!
Built the white nsx 😮
I don’t think he has a supra
@Joeyhill-wj6js yeah. It's at his house in the garage.
👌
yiippieeeee evo8😊
STM alternator
Evo 4
I've been watching since the small engine builds haven't won shit or nothing... 😅
1:04 dawg unfinna try wd40 or propane?
Hey
Stop using the 9 as a test subject and let it go to me 😬
Even 15V is tool much
El auto de mis sueños
I’d take the 10 grand and put it towards an evo
Ur opinion does not matter besides ur not hetting an evo for 10 grand
@@jevonbigga6172 are you blind, I said put the 10k towards an evo
@@jevonbigga6172 I assume daddy has an evo or you wish to have an evo.. buddy my mk2 focus rs is running 480bhp I don’t need an evo
You can sell that sti for more than 10k and put it towards evo
@Joeyhill-wj6js sti is shit had that trash bag ass car junked that bitch. Evo are gone in the wind sti are also on the chopping block with subaru. Yall better start paying attention to the honda build he gots lmao
I would not be driving that Evo with the alternator hitting 15v,
I think the Evo deserves some undercarriage covers
