Amendment: Prior to the card game we currently know and love, Bandai was originally given the rights to make the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG. I thought these cards were fake, but thanks to you guys, you've let me know I was wrong.

Kinda an off note, the first cards that floated around my school were the bandai cards, some kid sold me Anzu/Tea for a dollar. While the card will never really be valuable I still hold onto it for the nostalgia, a reminder of the year yugioh replaced pokemon :P

@@haruhirogrimgar6047 the problem is that yugioh as a game is built today to prevent playing, not a certain deck, and thats the problem. When i quitted, there were 15 hand traps, maybe including couple of solemns in most decks. And im not even talking about floodgate.
From my experience in pokemon tcg you might have 1 floodgate deck, but in 99% of the games you actually play and enjoy the game. Its because the meta is built to play, which is the difference from yugioh.
Iv also played mtg drafts, which was a unique experience because the boosters are built for that. Competative yugioh is just the worst thing. And im saying that as someone who spent years on the game and still inlove with it.

@themesongfan I might just be that damn old, back in the day there was no deck limit, then some jerkoff made a 2k+ card deck and forced a new ruling stating 200 card max, which appears to have been further limited since.
Synchros have fallen out from being the staple they once were as now they seem to be minor middle steps to bigger plays, I know people still play 'em but the joke was on how they went from being mandatory to optional over time.
And actually thanks to shit rulings back when I played in tournaments there was so much deck to field cheese that I had an opponent deck out by his third turn (during which i was burning his deck aswell) I dont think he was trying to win, but if he still had 1 card to draw it was his match to win.

    • @ExeErdna
      @ExeErdna 5 лет назад +20

Because the game isn't based on competing anymore. You don't find cards that work together you have the whole archetype even if Konami doesn't FINISH or support most of these correctly. Basically just ends up main characters in the anime their decks are broken as hell. They maybe throw in something "kinda" cool then the rest is bloody fodder because it's either A too damn slow for YGO now. Or B has no protections from the cards now that can instantly shut it down. Konami got rid of fun to make IRL duels basically 5 turns or less. When the game started matches would go on for a while.

No longer were you gradually upgrading your deck to be better and better, testing it in matches against your friends. Gone are the cries of, "You won't believe what card I got this weekend!" Now, ten year olds just google the decklist of the last big tournament winner, have their parents order the cards online, then come to duels acting like they're the epitome of skill and cunning because they copy-pasted the most broken deck they could find.

This is why stuff like commander exist for magic (pokemon is so well made they usually never have this problem, I think evolution & enrgy together limit resources enough to make games slower and more turn by turn play heavy, letting weaker decks have a fighting chance). It can be super casual, and while the competitive stuff is ultra expensive, you realistically only need 1 real copy for an official tournament deck while you proxy the expensive spells at your casual table. The huge difference in speed between 2 tiers allows easy table rulings on what is and isn't allowed, hell my table allows partners outside the printed ones as long as they don't break our own meta. The sheer number of different cards you need and a card to center around in different ways can make even similar archetypes with the same commander feel way different based on who built it.

The Basic Problem with Yugioh is simply that it has NO cost mechanic or whatsoever that keeps you from playing an infinite amount of cards per turn... and Special summoning stacking is not healthy either....

    • @ninmastnunyabiz9404
      @ninmastnunyabiz9404 5 лет назад +13

@@spieleschmiedewulfrath2017 Theoretically, the cost is card advantage. Normal and tribute summons are normally restricted to once per turn, and generally all but normal summons cost you cards in some way, usually other monsters. You can have a couple monsters with 1700 ATK or you can sacrifice them both for one monster with 2500 ATK. More powerful monsters are, theoretically, burdened with greater costs or more difficult summoning conditions, with some destroying every other card you control.
There are exceptions to this, of course, and the better an exception is, the more undoubtedly it is considered a powerful play specifically BECAUSE it's the exception, not the rule. The basic problem, then, isn't that there is no cost mechanic, since there plainly is, but that Konami has a bad habit of not thinking through the repercussions of potential abuse when they make an exception.

My guess as to why card artists aren't credited are because all of the illustrations for the first few sets were all by Takahashi himself, and when they started hiring more artists, they didn't want to change card layouts. I personally don't think that's an excuse for that, but I think that's the reason.

Your story about recieving your first yugioh deck on christmas really touched me. It reminded me of my younger days, when my siblings and I enjoyed watching the show but my parents banned us from collecting cards. They were against all the monsters and "demons" in the show. Being the oldest and creative, I had hand-drawn the yugioh cards for us. It was until around 2007 or 08 when we recieved our first computer, I went to yugioh card generators to help create new cards and print them out for my siblings.

The answer is unnecessary mechanics and power creep changing the game into something that is completely different.
The game is based on speed now rather than trumping your opponent. Having a first turn now is way different than back in the day, the GY is a resource pile rather than a place of cards being "out" except for rare cases, which is now the removed from play pile, boss monsters (even though they were well shit for the most part back in the day) are wasted printer ink and so on and so forth.
Long story short, the game developed in a way that fewer people enjoyed, it is not dead and sees many tournaments, but imo people still turn to magic and pokemon, for the simple reason of it being more grounded.

One thing I definitely have to say is that if anyone bothers you or acts a certain way, don't be afraid to speak up about it. Of course, not everyone is like that but in a mostly male community, there's a chance that you'll meet a few rude/pervy people that make the community look bad. When I was around 6 years old my father came home with a pack of some weird cards. He said he was told kids loved those and wanted to bring me some to see if I liked them. He also bought them because he liked the artwork and thought they looked cool. I had no fucking idea what they were, but the artwork definitely pulled me in and soon I began buying more and more packages. I soon learned it was a TV show and got instantly hooked in. I remember I built decks to play with myself, creating whole stories and even coming up with card effects... kinda like the show was written if you think about it. A couple of friends got into the game and soon we were dueling in between classes at our school. A very religious school that noticed our "behaviour" and decided to take away lots of our cards. What was a trading card game soon turned into a smuggling ring. We brought the cards to school, to play, trade and simply show them off to our friends, but we had to hide them from teachers, we had someone to warn us when teachers were coming and we designed systems to give the lowest value cards to someone and hide the rest in case of an emergency, so that if we got caught, that person could say he was the only one with cards and lose those that we didn't care much about.
Of course the teachers at school were stupid for taking them away because they were, according to them, satanic, but all in all I think they made the game even more exciting.
By the way when I was around 15 or so, long after I stopped buying cards and was exclusively playing through KCVDS (rip), I found out all the cards I bought as a kid were bootleg cards. I had no idea there were original cards that were so expensive in comparison. I still have thousands of the bootleg cards somewhere in my house in an old backpack. I eventually tried to get into the legit game but it was too late, the game was already far too complicated for my taste (I left around the 5Ds era, last time I played was when the XYZ where being introduced).

My local counterfeits for a good decade featured a different yugioh logo on the back, were often bent/curved to an extent straight out of the box, were unbelievably grammatically incorrect likely due to someone just running them through an internet translator with the descriptions making no sense or featuring words that I don’t believe were English, Spanish, or Japanese but appeared frequently on multiple cards, and often attributed attack and defense points to magic and trap cards. This persisted quite a while, well into pictures of official cards being readily available online, before even attempting to strive for accuracy in their replications and y’know, giving a shit about the quality of their product.

The meta, game mechanics, and deck building philosophy have changed so much that I feel now that Yugioh is a different card game from what I knew. Hand traps and flood gates is more important than traps. Bluffing and resource management is different. I remember effect veilers and maxx C were all you need and trap cards was more powerful. Ever since I was around 7 years old I've always had an obsession with ancient Egypt. At the time I was into Pokemon and was into collecting my own cards and trading with friends. I always watched Pokemon after school on a cable channel called Warner Bros and it had a section of time 2or 3pm-5pm or something like that to cartoons called Kids WB. I can't remember the line up but I decided to watch an episode of Yugioh when it first came out. What hooked me was the monologue about the shadow games played in ancient egypt with ancient Egyptian iconography and the first duel between Kaiba and Yugi. Another hook was in the first episode and seeing the cool artwork for the Dark Magician and Blue eyes. The monster Exodia caught my attention due to its ancient egyptian inspired appearance (the false beard and nemes headdress worn by pharaohs and ankh on the chest) not to mention wiping out all monsters on the field and attacking life points directly to 0 due to basically exodias infinite attack. I also like the fact that in the story back in ancient egypt the monsters were real and used to fight like pokemon. I lost interest after Yugi and the pharaoh's story came to a close. I really hope they make more seasons with Yugi, Kaiba, Joey, and the gang and keep the the yugioh cards and the story leading back to ancient egypt and other civilizations contemporary with the nation. I recently reopened my yugioh card collection and they all still have that card smell that we all love and remember.

as someone who's been playing for 5+ years, my biggest complaint is that this game and it's players are so focused on trying to win so fast instead of playing at a steady pace is a huge problem. they're so worried about not winning on the first turn that the game itself has become not fun. on top of that, making an entire summoning mechanic just to fix a previous summoning mechanic to fix your game just shows how bad they are at actual game balancing and management. I love yugioh, but I hate what it's become. it's still the "buy good deck to win" game that's it's always been since the ending of synchro era. I just hope link format was an example of how not to do yugioh. I pray something changes because I don't even know if I'll be invested by the time vrains ends.

The game has been powercreeping since Day 1. The first OCG sets constantly powercrept each other in ATK and DEF, each new set completely invalidated the old one. The Chaos engine became core in every decks the moment it came out, and back then there would only be 1 viable deck at all times, comprising of 25 or so good singles (or rather cards on the banlist), as well as a small engine and a few tech choices. The late-GX/early-Synchro era was so fucking fast with 3x Destiny Draw/3x Allure/3x Monster Gate/3x Reasoning that Airblade Turbo and variants could literally go through the entire deck by turn 3. Dark Armed variants like Return DAD/TeleDAD were $1k+ decks because of multiple SJC prize cards like DaD and Crush Card, and they were far ahead of the competition like Glad Beast and Lightsworn.

Link summoning felt like a mechanic just to force people to buy link monsters. Many of the link monsters and link support cards focus on special summoning monsters which then open up cards for further link summon and special summons.
The only way yugioh would slow down at this point would be to change the rules again. I wouldn't really like that, but it's the only way I could see things slowing down. It should say something that when you can't draw if you're on the first turn, yet you could still end up with a full field of cards and cards in your hand.

a part 2 to this. I don't hate link summoning itself. I love when komoney makes new summoning mechanics in the game because it gets me a chance to explore new play styles. but, this was a bad way to implement a new mechanic. I know they just wanted to nerf pendulums, but making it also nerf everything else is a bit unfair as well. what about the synchro players who love to play only synchro, or the case with other players. now, they're forced to use link and utilize link to stay relevant. which, if you've ever played synchro before you know why we can't just "add link monsters" to the extra deck. and I mention synchro not only because it was my favorite summoning mechanic, but they were affected the most by this new rule. I honestly don't hate links, I think when done right could've been a more healthy new mechanic. but, komoney jumped the gun on this one and designed it in a way where we're forced to use them. that's not okay and we don't need to enable komoney to do this to us. but hey, that's my 2 cents

I find that everyone's experience with Yu-Gi-Oh is different and unique to them.
My experience was my father was flipping around TV stations, one Saturday morning and found the show on Fox.
As I was already watching anime such as Pokemon, Dragon Ball Z, Shaman King & so on; he thought I would like it.
He was right, I started watching the show and took to it; similar to other kids at the time the cards were not yet a thing so we all just cut up flash cards from our school and started drawing our own.
Then about a year later, we randomly found one of the first ever Yu-Gi-Oh starter Decks, in a 7-Eleven; with the Dark Magician on it and the rest was history.

It's a new generation of kids. Something about Yu-Gi-Oh that always appealed to me, is that while it started out basic it grew to be more complex. It grew well with it's initial audience. But now that we are mostly adults we just can't spend all our money and time on a card game. The biggest flaw in Yu-Gi-Oh is they tried to make it too complex towards the end of 2013 and onward, mechanics are broken, cards/decks are op. And they try to fix it by banning cards and limiting them, rather than not making stupid mechanics in the first place.(we all know all that does is create a power creep) Konami got too greedy by pushing more and more archetypes and new packs upon packs upon packs to the players. They should have let the game evolve more naturally towards the end of last decade. This would've allowed a newer generation to jump into the scene. Look at the Pokemon Brand. They have stuck by this ideology and because of this have helped build arguably the best video game company in history. All in all, Konami made a lot of mistakes as a business, and they have shit balancing.

Now, in my mid-twenties, I still find myself opening a box or two every now and then, it feels like I'm the only one of my friends who continued to collect into their adulthood. I feel as though every time I sell some few cards on eBay, I can't help but to feel a little bittersweet. I just hope that kids nowadays are enjoying these cards (regardless if it's Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Magic the Gathering, or whatever series they collect) like we did as kids.

My first deck was Yugi Starter Deck. I first saw Yugi cards selling in stores at around 2003 (here in LA).
I showed up to school just as a hudle of classmates were eagerly watching a friend of mine as he opened the Kaiba Starter Deck.
Blu Eyes was on the box. The most beautiful cards I had ever seen. Just like the cartoon, only real and with more definition.
I bought my Yugi deck the very next day. I realized that monsters came in two colors, and that magics were green (back in the day,Spells were called Magic. I heard that Magic The Gathering TCG requested Konami/Upper Deck that they change the name on Yugis cards from 'magic' to something else.
Around 2009,I began to notice a cash-grab. Konami/Upper Deck got into a habit of releasing new sets, with every new set being more powerful than the previous.
Every 4 to 9 months, they released a new set, meaning,if you wanted to stay on top,you had no choice but to buy and play the new cards. Meaning,Konami/Upper Deck were making money from selling all those new sets. I pulled back.
I stayed out of the game, only holding onto the deck and spells/traps that I had.
Nothing special, ultra Honests, ultimate Trap Stuns, ultimate Typhoons, ultimate Card Trooper,DD Warior Ladies, that kind of stuff.
When I came back, might have been 2014/15,my friends insisted Bujins were a top tier. Well, they were late. Bujins were already getting swept by the new set. I spent 450 USD to realize that I was led astray. I sold the deck and all my extra deck for almost 200 bucks.
I watched as Ll my friends had to spend 400 USD every 4 or 6 months just to compete.
I dropped the game at about the time Linx monsters came on. The game is trash compared to when I started playing. They made the game better, but the game died after Synchros.
The game is dead in my eyes.

finally even if a card has a legit eye of anubis does not guarantee it's real, upper deck entertainment broke their contract and printed thousands of counterfeit cards in the GX era especially and it led into Konami Digital Entertainment (KDE-NA & KDE-EU) took over card production

18:49 I have experience dealing with this kind of things. The diference is in the card development. It seems that the 1st sets were illustrated by a Konami's team, adapting a lot of cards from the manga and anime, who's original artist was either Takahashi or the card designers for the anime series, which is not the same as the process of Concept art->Brefing-> Final Art, where you can easily credit your final artist. Other card games have the art credited to the single artist (some tomes 2) because of this. I agree with you, Konami should credit their artist on the cards where it's valid (like the noble knights, charmers, kaiju, invoked, mayakashi and other physical card game exclusive archetypes), I just don't know how would they deal with the multiple artirst source (like Code Talkers, Heros, etc), maybe crediting the studio in the later.
