- Yu-Gi-Oh! has changed a lot since the first season of the anime, with the game having grown steadily more complex, and cards more powerful as time went on.
But even with this persistent power-creep, Yami Yugi has remained as loyal to his cards as they have to him, no matter the era or timeline; Whether he’s facing God’s in Battle City, forging Bonds Beyond Time or exploring The Dark Side of Dimensions, he’s always treated his cards more like loyal companions instead of just creatures, and has inspired thousands of real life duelists to do just the same.
So in this video we’re going to go over the ten most important cards in Yugi’s decks, how they were used in the anime or manga, and whether or not these cards have had any kind of impact on the real life Yu-Gi-Oh! metagame

What i love in the Yu-Gi-Oh animes is that the protagonist ace monster always have 2500 attack and the rival's ace have 3000
Almost till Firewall was banned and replaced by Decode Talker :(
I liked that, too! I think it unintentionally kept the game balanced, at least, in terms of keeping boss monsters attack in check (usually if something has above 3000 attack, it's considered an "effect" such as Gishki Zielgiagas having 3200 attack and an okay ish effect).
Other games such as Bakugan, from my experience, started out with the average Bakugans having 400-500 G power, then the next season they had 700 G power, making the previous ones obsolete 😬 and they kept increasing so much so the average bakugan had 900 - over 1000 G power. It just made the game never build a competitive or casual tournament community because of how you essentially had to collect all over again because a new series came out. I wish they had kept it like Yugioh, as returning players are heavily a thing

Though one could argue he had no rival since the dynamic in the anime shifted entirely during the later half of the show. He had a mentor figure in Zane and a temporary sidekick in Jesse. But no rivals as far as I know.
In the manga series, Pegasus actually was in disbelief when Yugi played Kuriboh.
"Kuriboh!? You're kidding me, someone actually uses that card?"
This coming from the man who in-universe created duel monsters.
I love that Yugi's climactic duel in the Duelist Kingdom arc features Kuriboh, one of his most iconic but pitifully weak monsters, in his winning strategy. Pegasus' disbelief is also somewhat paid tribute to in the anime, with Pegasus saying, 'Curse you, Yugi Muto, you and your Kuribohs!'
Ironically Kuriboh is a God tier card if one uses him right.

It's a particularly weird comment when Pegasus just saw him win against Mai using Kuriboh not that long ago. And, on that note, Mai and Kaiba (present and past versions) also get upset about Atem playing Kuriboh.
I made a Kuriboh deck just to mess with a friend, turns out, there are in fact enough Kuribohs and Kuriboh related support
you'd think that kuriboh and summoned skull were far more powerful because of how dumb rules were in the early anime, but it's still fun to see that summoned skull was the OG boss monster in the first eras of the tcg
anime Kuriboh is straight up bullshit. That also cause countless fight in the playground because some dude just "multiply" his Kuriboh and declare to explode everything on opponent field.
Never forget super charged Alpha the Magnet Warrior.
Pfft that early anime had no rules because they didn't adapt the rules over from the manga (where they are explained).
Summoned Skull was LV7 in the manga, so Dark Magician replaced it in Battle City

You know, the Exodia cards were always in such a strange spot:
They’re some of the most powerful cards in the anime, but the TCG/OCG meta doesn’t reflect that often, but when it DOES then it’s a sign that something is deeply wrong in the game itself.
The big difference is what the show and the game did with the Exodia limbs. Grandpa just stuffed them into his deck in case he could get lucky. When real players put Exodia in their deck, it's with the understanding that they _will_ draw them and will often eschew playing the game altogether (either through mega-solitaire combos, or intense stalling) to maximize the chance of that happening

Even with the supervillain plots and SAW level shenanigans, leave it to RL players to somehow be MORE ruthless in actually playing the game then any of the Anime’s/Manga’s villains.

That would imply that there are more legal copies of Exodia then just the 5 we see in the anime.
@@ButFirstHeLitItOnFire I mean, the Rare Hunter that Yugi battled at the beginning of Battle City had three copies of each part, meaning that, in addition to the copies Yugi had (before Weevil threw them in the ocean), we can confirm that there are at least 4 copies of each piece in the world of the anime.

All the main DM characters need to be part of this series to show how important their monsters were and their legacy in the current state of the game.
Potential candidates:
Kaiba - Blue-Eyes White Dragon, XYZ Dragon Cannon monsters, Vorse Raider, Obelisk The Tormentor, the weird clowns.
Joey - Red-Eyes Black Dragon, Flame Swordsman, Jinzo, Gearfried, Gilford just maybe
Tea - Magician Of Faith, arguably Dark Magician Girl as well.
Mai Valentine - Harpie Lady and all of them archetype, you might add some Amazoness though there's some debate about their relevance here.
Pegasus - Relinquished, pretty much all the toons.
Marik/Yami Marik - The Winged Dragon Of Ra, Makyura, Lava Golem
Yami Bakura - Dark Necrofear, Dark Ruler Ha Des, the Ouja inspired spell/trap cards I can't remember the name
Bandit Keith - Barrel Dragon
Wheevil - The Moth line, Insect Queen
Mako Tsunami - Legendary Fisherman

Summoned Skull also shows the bonds of friendship between Yugi and Joey. Summoned Skull and Red-Eyes Black Dragon can be fused into Black Skull Dragon. In the first double duel of the series, Yugi and Joey did just that to defeat the Paradox brother.
Edit: Yes, Dragoon can also be said to show the strength of their friendship, but that was not in the original show.
Imagine if in early yugioh that Yugi and Joey summoned Dragoon to defeat the paradox brothers 😭😭😭
Truthfully, Konami said they got the Dragoon idea from when Yugi had Red Eyes on the field when he summoned DM & Buster Blader. It was a "What If" moment if Yugi fused Red Eyes and DM to defeat Kaiba in the semi finals, instead of Buster Blader. That's why Konami gave it the same clothing pattern as Dark Paladin. Also, Dragoon also has a relation to Gandora Dragon because of the Gigarays on its armor, hence the Fusion material: Dragon EFFECT Monster, something Gandora Dragon is.

Holy crap, how did I never know Gaia became the Black Luster Soldier?!? I just knew he was the ritual sacrifice but I never realized the similarities in their armor
Gaia evolves into a Chaos monster, BLS. DM and Gaia both evolve into the Chaos monsters: MoBC and BLS.
Yup! In the manga, Ritual Summoning is basically occult Polymerization. You need Gaia and 2 monsters with 1500 or less ATK, aka Kuriboh and Griffore, to make BLS. This can be seen in Super Soldier Ritual.
Other “transformations” were Dark Magician into Magician of Black Chaos, as well as Dark-Eyes Illusionist + an armor monster to make Relinquished
I'd still like to know why they changed the monster's name from Chaos Soldier to Black Luster Soldier. Yes, this was before archetypes became a thing, but still...

I really like how most, if not all, of Yugi's monsters branched off to archetypes of their own, rather than just turn into support for one archetype (like Lord of D for Kaiba, or Gearfried for Joey)
except for mystical elf, who kaiba took while no one was looking
King/Jack/Queen's Knight came up at pivotal momments when Yugi needed flex tribute summons or monster fotter.
Magical Hats is still one of the most unique cards ever and I think is probably among the best cards Yugi had.
Gardna and Mystical Elf were used as pure defensive walls, and were mostly ok back in those days.

@@amanonstilts4555 Actually, it's nowhere near Yugi's top card. He never uses it at all until the Battle City Finals. He also uses it twice during DOMA, once in the KC Grand Championship, and once against Yugi. Joey and Kaiba use it a LOT more.

The irony is that Summoned Skull had an entire archetype now. Alongside a Fusion, Synchro, XYZ, and Ritual form. And that’s not counting the Skull Archfiend of Lightning retrain.
Such a beloved card.
I was a bit sad he didn't bring up the archetype! It's not competitive, but definitely a nice ode to Yugi's beloved card. I wish they received a level 2 tuner and level 4 monster (or both make them level 3s) to help support the Fusion and Synchro variants -- and maybe the tuner can modify its level to help the Ritual and XYZ Summoned Skull, as well? 😁

I think "Top 10 Boss Monsters not part of an official archetype", "Top 10 Most expensive cards ever and why they are so expensive", "Top 10 Side Deck only cards", "Top 10 Worst Extra Deck monsters that can be brought out differently than their original materials", and "Top 10 Rogue Decks" would be a great idea for more lists. ^^
Kuriboh also paved the way for hand traps by being the first card to be discarded in response to an opponent's play to activate an effect.

One of the reason I really like Yugi as main character that he truly loves his cards, treating them as companions and thanks to it, all of his cards are straight iconic.
Yugi and Joey's friendship is so strong it even reached the banlist.
I believe this is one of the best videos so far, it was so fun to revive some of the memories from the first anime, and showed how some of this cards were so important even as a meta defining, or just as a cool mechanic, even when is not as strong in TCG.
This video forgot to mention that Slifer was actually played here and there is recent Tearlaments and Branded strategies due to the fact that the most recent Slifer trap card being released allowed for Slifer to be summoned and both players draw up to 6 cards.

I really wish Summoned Skull had more support for him; hopefully in the future he'll get the respect he deserves. I'd love to use him again.
My friend and I used to often argue about how swords of revealing light worked. He claimed that the swords activated their effect when played, immediately went to the graveyard and prevented me from attacking for 3 turns. His reasoning was that the spell card didn't have the continuous spell symbol on it and most other spell cards that didn't have that were activated, did whatever it is they do and then immediately hit the graveyard. I argued that the swords stayed on the field for 3 turns, then selfdestructed and only then went to the graveyard and that it didn't have the continuous spell symbol on it because it wasn't really continuous, but had a temporary effect. It was in some undefined grey area that no other cards (at the time) existed in and we could never agree on who was right.
Years later, after we had both stopped playing the game, we finally learned how they work, but it was too late by then. It was a really confusing card mechanic for kids, lol
I also remember seeing other kids play around the mirror force trap by putting some of their monsters in defense, as DuelLogs mentioned but it went beyond even that. Sometimes, they had Mirror Force, let the opponent attack with one monster but didn't activate it to trick them into thinking they didn't have it and if the opponent fell for it, they'd turn everything back into attack position the next turn and try to go for game, only to be met with devastation instead. So, the idea then became to present lethal with one or two monsters in attack while keeping the rest safe in defense as potential back up, so your opponent was forced to activate it just to survive. But to achieve such a dominating board state is easier said then done, ofcourse. We called it the mirror force mindgames. It was epic.
Regarding Swords of Revealing Light, doesn't the card text explicitly state that it remains on the field after activation, but you must send it to the GY after the third turn?

@@vahlen5281 Maybe on some versions of the card it does, but back when we played it in the very early stages of the game, it didn't. If I had to guess, this was an issue that came up in many different places, so they clarified it on the card itself later on. It definitely wasn't on the card itself back in the days we played it, though.
@@Xylarxcode Definitely an errata then, although I have to wonder why Konami didn't specify it from the get go, since as you pointed out, SoRL was definitely a spell that pretty much went against the established rule set.
@@vahlen5281 Either they want it to be unique an special, or it was Wizard of the Coast goofing up cuz back then they were in charge of distributing Yugioh in America, and they were responsible for some effect cards having weird wording for the sake of making them sound cool and fantastical, causing some ruling headaches for the first years of the game
I’d like to see lists like this for the other protagonists.
Idk about anyone else, but DMG felt like Yugi's main ace through the Battle City Arc; idk if it was to promote the new monster or because she was easier to summon, but it seems like there were at least equal, if not more, duels involving her in the Battle City Arc than Dark Magician.
Really great topic this time! Mixing the competitive/historical angle from the usual tops 10s with the lore/anime focus of Unknown Side; big fan of it, would love to see more lists like this about other character's cards.

I think that's one of the few times you talk about cards impact in anime !! Waiting for jaden , and don't forget to include bubbleman in top 5 because it was an underrated card at the anime even though it has a different effect in tcg and ocg
I remember freaking out when I got my first Summoned Skull as a kid. I loved and do still love that card. Really want to make a full Summoned Skull deck sometime with all of its extra deck retrains.

If this is based on the anime, I might argue to move Kuriboh up since it’s the card that Yugi gives Jayden (as winged Kuriboh) to begin the follow-up anime. Great vid as always 🤘
I’ve watched the video a few times and I love it but it just dawned on me because Timaeus was mentioned in other segments. The eye of Timeaus should have been on the list and probably at #4 to push exodia back. Swords may of had some moments but Timeaus was used so much more.

I'd argue Spellbinding Circle or Magical Hats over Mirror Force as Yugi certainly liked to use those two much more but great video!

For Slifer, I used him in one of my favorite gimmick sets way back in the day. I'd try to get him out quickly, alongside King Tiger Wanghu that has a similar effect to destroy things on summon, Light of Intervention to prevent setting monsters so Slifer's and Wanghu's effects wouldn't be bypassed, then By Order of the Emperor to finish off the combo, sometimes including Infinite Dismissal if I couldn't get all the cards out in time.
How it worked was that Light of Intervention would make the opponent only summon face up, activating the effect of Slifer and often Wanghu too. But if I didn't care about their summon staying or if it would activate both, I'd use Order to negate Slifer's or both effects to get free draws (or negate the summon's effect itself in case it was a searcher), while I'd use it on my turn when summoning since Wanghu also affects your summons too, turning into free draws every time you summon a 1400 or less attack monster. Basically every turn I'd be drawing an extra card if not more, which would only make Slifer stronger and let me draw into interruption like Dark Bribe to guard against MSTs. Jinzo did screw up the strat temporarily if he was ever brought out, but provided I had Slifer out first, he'd end up with just 400 attack instead of 2400, making him a joke to deal with.
Overall was very fun and relatively consistent as a gimmick back in 2008-2011 when I used it, good times. Best part of it is that you just need Slifer, 1-2 Wanghus, 1-2 Orders, Light, maybe 3 Dark Bribes/negates and as insurance to buy time one Dismissal, total of only 10 cards at most, maybe 14-16 if we include whatever you choose as your method of getting Slifer out fast is, so the rest of the deck can straight up be whatever you want, can be extra gimmicks, can be a small engine with BLS or even DAD, etc., only buffing consistency. You can even double down on the gimmick factor since you get so many draws and have the rest be an Exodia engine just because with Heart of the Underdog or something, just note that doing that will require you to use Infinite Cards to fit the 20 cards you'll end up with after 3 turns lol
I run Buster Blader in my deck and I’ve run it in my deck for years. It wasn’t until a few years ago when I fully embraced the Destruction sword cards and understood what they could accomplish together. I resonate with my Buster Blader because he’s a warrior and no matter how many times he gets banished or destroyed in duels, I am always able to bring out my 3 copies of Dragon Destroyer back to back. And with the Buster Dragon lock down and the extra deck/GY lock down, I can beat most meta decks if I can set my combo before their boss monster. I do lose some duels when I can draw my Buster Whelp starter but it’s always a beautiful feeling when I draw my Buster Blader when I need it the most.
If a second video does get made, I honestly think Chimera the Flying Mythical Beast deserves a spot. It's not a terribly good card, but starting with Battle City almost every time Yugi fuses it's to create this monster specifically. And in the slower-paced anime, it's pretty handy to have a floater when there aren't many around.
now we need to see kaiba and joey. a bit surprising magician of black chaos wasn't part of the list considering while not anywhere near as prevalent as its more well known 2 counterparts (dark magician and dark magician girl), black chaos is still part of the magician trinity and yugi did put a heavy emphasis of utilizing the magicians especially earlier on in the series.
Also, its retrain DMoC was the face of Reasoning Gate.
Apart from Red-Eyes and Jinzo, I feel like most of Joey's cards aren't considered all that iconic, sadly.

Crazy how Exodia is SO iconic despite only being used in ONE duel.
One really cool Sword of Revealing Light application in the early formats of the game was that you could trigger your opponent's flip monster effects.
For example, if you don't have any monsters / trap cards on your side of the field, and if you flip up your opponent's Man Eater Bug / Trap Master to force your opponent to blow up a card on their field
I love Kuriboh’s Duelist Kingdom detonation effect! How it behaved in the show/manga, it’s probably something along the lines of “If this card is targeted by a card effect: It gains the following effect. •If this card battles an opponent’s monster, before Damage Calculation: You can destroy both this card and that monster”
An interesting list could be top 10 cards that were featured in multiple versions of the anime. Not counting staples like pot of greed or polymerisation.
Yes a part two would be amazing I didn't see Celtic Guardian or Feral Imp....kinda lackluster without them lol.

Kuriboh definitely became a grandfather in Yu-Gi-Oh. It was not only because it's own archetype. It essentially became the first hand trap, a mechanic which is apparently a key strategy on competitive decks.

I'd like to see lists for other characters' cards in the future, like Kaiba, Joey, and Pegasus.
Don't know if you could pick out 10 cards for this list, but I would love to see one of these lists for Kaiser Ryo/Zane Truesdale. Cyber Dragons have been an iconic part of the game and warped the meta when the OG first hit the scene.

Honorable Mention: Magic Cylinders, because in the TCG its probably the main weakness to the Egyptian Gods.
I know from experience, since I pulled it on someone who brought Ra out, and got it to 15,000, before I flipped up Magic Cylinders, and I had to remind the person the trap is sending the attack back at them directly.

Seeing thumbnail, I could totally see an alternate moment when Yugi tries assembling Exodia after reobtaining. The opponent, who's been countering everything in his deck, screws this over as well by sending most pieces to grave.
Then Yugi smiles at what he draws, shocks the guy by playing an Exodia piece straight up, only to reveal Exodia Incarnate at over 4000 ATK for game. Kinda like a coming full circle thing, with this card symbolizing a new gen of Exodia that isn't being used for evil
Back in the day, I used Kuriboh in my Dark Necrofear deck because it was fiend, easy to discard for her, and it negated the chaos dragons burn damage.
How about top 10 archetypes made from Yugi's cards such as the BLS Super Soldier/Chaos, the Gaia The Dragon Knight stuff, obviously Dark Magician's support, Silent Swordsman, Magnet Warriors, Face Card Knights, Kuriboh, etc. I think Archfiends can be included too thanks to Summoned Skull and Skilled Red Magician. Honestly, maybe the Skilled Magicians could be featured on your Unknown Side Of Yugioh videos.
